Andrew Gentry: Big Man with Big Goals - From Michigan National Champion to BYU's Offensive Line

After committing to Virginia out of high school, Gentry's path took an unexpected turn when Bronco Mendenhall stepped down during his mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Orem, Utah.

While serving faithfully as a missionary, Gentry received permission from his mission president to meet with coaches after his parents reached out to potential schools. In a remarkable story, Jim Harbaugh flew to Utah, meeting Gentry in Orem's University Mall. Accompanied by his mission companions, Gentry spent 45 minutes with Harbaugh before committing to Michigan on the spot—and then returning to proselytizing that same day.

This divinely-timed connection led to an incredible journey at Michigan that included a National Championship season alongside eight offensive linemen who went to the NFL. Despite battling through injuries and eventually suffering a Lisfranc injury that sidelined him during Michigan's 2023 campaign, Gentry's faith and prayers guided him to BYU following Harbaugh's departure to the NFL.His decision was influenced by BYU's newfound urgency and competitive spirit in the Big 12, where he sees the potential to compete for a National Championship. Through stories of practicing against future NFL defensive linemen, learning from Coach Harbaugh's leadership, and overcoming setbacks, Gentry shares valuable life lessons like "Don't get bitter, get better." Now recovering from surgery with hopes of returning to full strength for fall camp, Gentry brings his championship experience and NFL aspirations to a BYU offensive line that showed tremendous growth last season.
