Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hello friends,
welcome to episode 273.
Today we are doing scotcheroos.
Welcome to Bite Me, the showabout edibles, where I help you
take control of your high life.
I'm your host and certifiedganger, margaret, and I love
helping cooks make safe andeffective edibles at home.
I'm so glad you're here.
(00:26):
Greetings friends, welcome backto another fantastic episode of
Bite Me.
And if you're just joining usfor the first time, welcome.
I'm so glad you found thislittle corner of the internet
where you can gleefully listenabout cannabis content and
making your own edibles at homea little radical self-reliance
for us all, because, god knows, sometimes you just got to take
(00:50):
care of things yourself, am Iright?
And if you've been around for awhile, my heartfelt
appreciation goes out to you, because it is not easy creating
a show, especially in thislittle niche that I'm in.
And it's folks like you thatshare with friends and family
that make this show discoverable.
And I'm on a mission to empowerpeople to create their own
edibles at home and to buildcommunity around them, because
(01:15):
is there anything more lovelythan receiving a beautiful gift
of something infused fromsomeone that you care about?
From someone that you careabout Now?
Today we are talking aboutScotch Roos, and before I get
into today's episode.
I wasn't actually planning ondoing this, but let's try it out
(01:37):
.
The stoner trivia I haven'tdone that in a while, just for
fun.
Let's do a question out of thedeck.
This stoner trivia raced a 420deck that I received from Wayne
a little while ago.
Thank you, wayne.
He is a regular listener of theshow and this question is in
(01:57):
the category unjust bust.
Which member of the Beatles wasarrested in London after police
found 120 joints in his home in1969?
Was it George Harrison, johnLennon or Ringo?
120 joints?
Is that because back in 1969,the joints, the weed, was not as
(02:19):
strong and therefore you neededthat many in order to get the
effects that you were lookingfor?
Or this person just wanted tobe well-prepared?
We may never know.
Again, that question is whichmember of the Beatles was
arrested in London after policefound 120 joints in his home in
1969?
(02:39):
If you guessed George Harrison, you would be correct.
And that's just a littlecannabis trivia.
So the next time you're going toa trivia night, you are
prepared for whatever questionsthey throw at you.
I do happen to go to a trivianight in my local town, not
every week, but I am part of alittle group of ladies that like
(02:59):
to go to this trivia night at alocal pub, and let me just say
some nights are better thanothers as far as the score that
we get on our trivia questions.
Sometimes we do great and othertimes not so well, and having
questions like these in yourback pocket can be remarkably
handy when you're doingsomething like a trivia night.
(03:19):
And if you haven't been out toa trivia night at a local
establishment near you recently,I'd say it's a fun way to
exercise some brain power whilemeeting new friends.
And if you can sneak in acannabis drink, then more power
to you.
I haven't tried that yet, butmaybe I will.
(03:40):
So let's get into today'sepisode.
I had kind of first startedthis particular.
I looked for this particularrecipe, not this specific one,
but I was looking for no bakerecipes because over in the
cannabis club that I am building, I created a challenge for a no
bake November, because Novemberis a busy month, I know, for
(04:04):
you folks in the US.
Thanksgiving is coming up,which means that's like the real
start to the holidays, theholiday season, and it's just
things seem to be getting busiertowards the end of the year.
So why not find recipes whereyou don't have to slave over a
hot oven?
Now, this one did require somemelting of things, but it was so
(04:27):
easy to put together that Idon't know if that really
qualifies.
So this was just an easy recipethat you can make, you can
freeze, and I thought I wouldshare it here because I'm trying
to make life easier for you all.
Now, these scotcheroos you maybe wondering what is a
scotcheroo, and I'm glad you'reasking because I'm going to tell
(04:48):
you.
Essentially, they are a ricecrispy treat, but without
marshmallows and instead peanutbutter.
Did you say peanut butter?
Yes, I did, and so that makesthem actually a really filling
treat as well.
So if you're going to be justhaving one because you've
infused it, then you're going to.
I find them very satisfying.
(05:11):
Now, I actually infused minewith, instead of THC, cbd,
because it's really difficult tomake a whole tray of something
delicious like these scotcheroosand then not be able to share
them with my father, who I amliving with currently, and while
he has become far more tolerantand open to the idea of
(05:35):
cannabis, he is still not aconvert for himself, using
edibles in the more traditionalway, where you eat one and you
get really high, and then itmight also, you know, help you
with some of the ailments Myself.
You know that lower back painis definitely alleviated when I
consume edibles.
(05:56):
But I can't expect him at theage of 93 to suddenly change his
mind to decide he wants to getlit.
But he is open to CBD.
So I did infuse him with CBD,which also means I've eaten a
good number of these scotch roosalready, and they are delicious
.
I think I'm going to have tofreeze some because otherwise
(06:16):
I'm going to eat an ungodlynumber, and don't think that I'm
not sharing.
What I like to do sometimes isleave a couple out on a little
dish or a plate in the kitchenand he will ask oh, are these
for anybody?
And I will of course sayabsolutely, please eat some.
Because I've probably alsoalready eaten several myself
before putting them out on theplate and I'll go into the
(06:38):
kitchen and see that he's cutoff a half and then he'll cut
off, have another little piecelater, and it's just kind of
heartwarming to see that he'senjoying these as much as I am.
So I'm not just doing it allfor myself, but that also means
sometimes I have to use thingslike CBD as the main cannabinoid
in this particular creationthan I might otherwise, but
that's okay.
(06:58):
I have plenty of other THCinfused edibles that I can make
use of as well.
This is just the way I'm livingright now.
So you know, these are thethings I have to deal with, and
I'm sure all of you have yourown little living situation I
shouldn't say little livingsituations living situations out
there where you have to thinkabout the people that you live
with and maybe sometimes thatmeans you've got to move towards
(07:22):
CBD versus THC.
I'll be doing both.
I'm going to be doing probablymore baking and creating as we
get closer to the holidays, because I do like to give to
these types of things to peoplethat I care about.
So obviously I'm going to havemore THC and CBD infused treats
around the house and I'llprobably freeze quite a few as
(07:42):
well, because there is nothinglike doing all the work up front
and then being able to store itand then coming back to it
after you're pooped and it'sbeen busy and you're tired and
thinking I have some optionsthat I made a little while ago
that I can tap into now.
So all these things Now it saysthat these Scotcheroos.
I found this recipe on a websitecalled the Pioneer Woman.
(08:05):
I am not a Pioneer Woman, butthe recipe looked tasty and it
said that they were created bythe Kellogg company in 1965.
And Kellogg's got a prettyinteresting history or
philosophy, but I didn'tactually use Rice Krispie Treats
myself.
I use a different brand.
I found something else in astore that I like to go to, but
(08:27):
of course, whatever works foryou and they're pretty easy to
make, I used infused honey forthis.
So I made some infused honeyfor this particular recipe, but
I made enough so that I had itfor other things.
I've already used it forsomething else.
I can't even remember what itis at the moment, but I have
used it in also as a sweetenerfor teas.
It's mostly tea.
(08:49):
I don't really put honey in mycoffee, but you can, and I think
that's probably the easiest wayto infuse this.
Actually, I think it's prettymuch the only way to infuse it,
unless you used infusedchocolate to do the topping.
So basically, if you're tryingto imagine what a scotch roux is
, it's a rice crispy treat whereinstead of marshmallows that
(09:11):
you're mixing in with the ricecrispies or the rice puffs or
whatever you want to call them.
You're using a peanut butter, honey sugar mixture and then you
top it with melted chocolateand that gives the top coating,
which you just then put it inthe fridge to set and then you
can cut it up into pieces.
(09:32):
So it's really easy to make.
But think Rice Krispies, but onsteroids, because they are
sweet and delicious, but again, with the peanut butter it makes
them more filling as far as atreat goes, as I already
mentioned.
So what you need for the peanutbutter mix is basically your
infused honey, some brown sugarin your creamy peanut butter and
(09:54):
a little bit of vanilla.
You melt all that stuff on thestove, you pour it over top of
your or the Rice Krispies thatare in a bowl, and then you
press that into the bottom ofyour coated baking tray.
And then, while that'shappening, you are going to take
some of your semi-sweetchocolate chips, butterscotch
chips.
(10:14):
I think this is what really gotme, because, as a caramel lover
, I love caramel andbutterscotch.
I mean, it had me inbutterscotch.
So you melt the chocolate andthe butterscotch and a little
bit of coconut oil together.
You just do that in themicrowave, which was pretty easy
to do.
You do it in little batches sothat you're not going to like
overdo it, and then you pourthat over top of your your rice
(10:38):
crispy mixture.
Like I said, you take a nicebutter knife or something and
spread it out so it's relativelyeven, and then you put it in
the refrigerator and you let itset for at least 30 minutes, cut
it into squares and enjoy.
They're delicious, I can't say.
And if you're trying to makesomething for the holidays or
(11:00):
coming up, these are easy anddelicious and a crowd pleaser,
because who doesn't love thecombination of peanut butter,
chocolate and butterscotch?
I mean, this is wonderful.
Now the website itself.
There was a couple of commentsand the only one that I see here
was I loved making it for thekids.
Just remember, if you're makingthis infused with anything like
(11:21):
CBD or THC, you need to labelit and let the folks know that
they are consuming some cannabis, as I have done.
You know my dad is enjoyingthese, knowing that there's some
CBD in them, so that doesn'tseem to stop him at all, but of
course he's not going to becomeintoxicated by consuming these.
So just be sure that you aregoing to properly label these
(11:44):
and calculate how strong theyare if you're gifting them to
anybody, because these are justthe bare minimum things we need
to do to make sure that peopleenjoy the edibles that you're
gifting them.
Have you ever received an ediblewhere you're not sure the
person who gifted them to youhas no idea how strong they are?
What feeling does that evoke inyou?
Because for me, now that I'vebeen doing this for a while and
(12:06):
it's been a while since I'vebeen gifted an edible, but I was
a while ago.
I can't remember who gifted itto me now it wasn't really
somebody that I knew directly, but I received this edible in a
little foil tin foil, it waslike a brownie or something, but
no idea how strong they wereand I think I never ended up
(12:26):
consuming them.
Because we've all talked topeople who are like I have a
tolerance.
I was talking to somebody justthe other day and they're like I
can tolerate 1200 milligrams ofTHC without much issue, and for
most people, 1200 milligrams ofTHC would make them extremely
ill.
I've talked to other people whofind a five milligrams is their
(12:49):
peak dose, their max dose, because that's what allows them
to feel good in their body whilethey're, you know, high, and
I've seen everything in between.
I'm a 25 milligram kind of galmyself.
Some people I tell that to andthey're like holy shit, that's
crazy.
And other people are like, yeah, I could do 50, 100 milligrams.
(13:10):
So we are all individuallyunique.
We all have our own biology.
So just remember that when yougift something to somebody and
you're like, yeah, it's I don'tknow, I eat it and it seems fine
, that doesn't mean anything.
So please do the calculationsand remember I do have a
calculator over onbitemepodcastcom.
(13:30):
It's free to use.
You can just go on there, inputthe info and figure out how
much your approximate value ofthe edibles are that you're
making.
Because I do realize thosecalculators are not perfect by
any means, but at least givingsomeone some context is big.
Because if you can givesomebody to someone you're like,
(13:51):
yeah, I think it's about 25milligrams per piece, then they
can.
If they have no frame ofreference, then you can suggest
maybe they start with a littlesmall piece.
I would often gift peopleedibles that you know.
If they're like, oh, I justwant a couple of cookies, I
would always, usually give theman extra one.
(14:12):
So that would be theexperimental cookies, just like
start by.
You know, I would tell them howmuch it was approximately,
dosage wise, and if they wereuncertain of their own tolerance
, be like.
You know what you can cut thiscookie into like four or maybe
eight pieces.
It's not as exciting, I realize, but once you have done the
work to figure out where yourtolerance lies, it really opens
(14:32):
up the doors to a whole lot morepossibilities.
So I'm sure I've ranted aboutthis Actually, I don't know if
rant is the right word, becausethis is important.
People Like radicalself-reliance.
Yes, it's great to make yourown edibles at home, but as soon
as you start gifting them toother people, you are in a sense
a representative of thecannabis community, because we
certainly don't want to feelresponsible for someone having a
(14:54):
shitty time and possibly neverconsuming cannabis ever again,
because we're all here listening, because we have found some
benefit in using cannabis in ourlives, no matter what that
benefit is.
And some people may find thatjust topicals are where they can
tolerate their cannabis use intheir life.
But how many people havetopicals helped, or edibles, or
(15:17):
smoking or whatever it does?
And if they have a bad timewith that first experience, they
may never come back to it againand be forever lost in the
world of pharmaceuticals or orjust dealing with the pain or
the sleeplessness or the anxietyor whatever.
Does that make sense?
Maybe I'm going on a bit toolong about this, but use the
(15:38):
calculator over onBiteMePodcastcom.
It's really easy to use.
And do try these Scotcheroos.
I think you'll really enjoythem.
They are delicious, they'reeasy to make and they don't
require you turning on your oven.
So if you're busy baking upother things this time of year,
your oven will be free Free to,I don't know.
I've been baking bread again,so maybe baking bread.
(16:02):
I don't know if there's too muchmore to say about this, to be
honest.
So perhaps we'll end it in acouple, in a minute here.
But one thing I do want to sayif you haven't yet listened to
the episode with Amanda she'sthe queen of cannabis.
Honestly, I love Amanda and she.
We did an episode where she wetalked about her aroma wheel,
(16:23):
her new cookbook.
I guess it is a cookbook.
It's mostly focused on makingtopicals, which is really timely
for this time of year.
I have already made the lotionbars and they are really easy to
make.
So a great book if you'reinterested in making topicals,
and they do make a lovely gift, especially if you have people in
your life that are curiousabout cannabis but don't
necessarily want to consume it.
Topicals are such a beautifulway to introduce people to
(16:46):
cannabis because they can be soeffective for so many different
folks for so many differentphysical pain points, that it's
a lovely way to introduce peopleto cannabis because they don't
get high from it and so it feelsa little less scary.
But if you haven't listened tothat episode yet, amanda's
amazing and I'm really glad thatshe's doing the work that she's
(17:08):
doing in the world.
So that was the most recentepisode and of course, I have
lots of fun episodes coming upbetween now and the end of the
year.
I can't believe we're getting tothis point in the calendar.
If you're listening to this inreal time, this is being
recorded in November of 2024.
And God, where does the time go.
But I digress.
(17:30):
My only request for you rightnow is, if you enjoyed this
episode, share it with somebodythat you care about.
Get out your phone right nowand text it to them and perhaps
give them some inspiration forsomething they can create in
their kitchen.
Infused or otherwise, cbd, thc, whatever cannabinoids you have
on hand, whatever cannabisyou're using.
I think I used actually acombination.
(17:53):
Actually, no, I didn't for thisone.
Nevermind, I'll probably cutthat, but text them right now.
And if you make this up, if youmake this particular recipe, I
would love to hear how you didit Because, like I said, there's
more than one way to infuse it,although the easiest way is to
infuse it with honey.
I love infused honey.
(18:14):
It is such a versatile infusionto have in your pantry because
it can be used for so manythings you want to sweeten
something up.
It's great in beverages, hotcold.
It's great in a lot of sweetsand desserts where you want to
sweeten something.
But it's not necessarilycalling for a fat like you would
(18:35):
in traditional edibles.
So it's a really handy infusionto have on hand.
But of course, you could useinfused chocolate as well, but
that might require a littleextra planning if you're going
to infuse the chocolate yourselfor go and make it.
But anyway, that's it for thisweek, my friends.
I could probably keep talkingbecause I just had a second cup
of coffee and I'm feeling alittle jazzed up.
But please let me know if youtry making this.
(18:58):
Send me your questions, comments, pictures, anything.
I love to see it all and untilnext week, my friends.
I'm your host, margaret, stayhigh.
