S1 (00:00):
Today on Bold Steps Weekend with Mark Jobe. We're learning
how to face our greatest challenges.

S2 (00:06):
You think that it's over? But I want to tell
you something. There is nothing that's over. When you introduce
the resurrection power of the living Jesus, it's never over,
never over, never over.

S1 (00:32):
Welcome to Bold Steps Weekend with Mark Jobe, president of
Moody Bible Institute and senior pastor of New Life Community
Church in Chicago. I'm Wayne Shepherd. Today, as we move
forward in our series moved how to prepare for the moment,
we're learning that in order to reach a breakthrough, we
need to know where we're going and who we're listening to.
Mark started this message last weekend, so if you missed

(00:54):
the first part, you can catch up online at Bold Steps.
Right now, let's jump into our study titled before your moment.

S2 (01:04):
I'm talking about the fear and the faith. I'm talking
about the Holy Spirit and some other spirit. I'm talking
about the voice that tells you, hey, there's hope for
your life. God has a purpose and a plan for
your life. You have a destiny. You have a gifting God.
You have a call. And the other voice that says
into your ear you will amount to nothing. There's no

(01:27):
hope for you. You might as well give it up.
And in the darkest moment that voice sometimes has told you,
you might as well end it. There is no hope.
There you'll be alone the rest of your life. There
is no future. There's a dark tunnel. Do you want
to be in this pain? I'm talking to someone here
because what I know is that four out of the
ten people here have had suicidal thoughts. Here's what I've

(01:51):
discovered with the two voices. And sometimes those voices talk
to us at the same time. Let me just illustrate
that for you. I'm gonna get to two. I'm gonna
get a volunteer here. Come on, come on, come on,
help me out. Yolanda! Come here. Help me out. I'm
gonna put you in the middle. I got two women

(02:13):
with loud voices. No, no, I mean, I got two
women that can speak up. You're going to be the
voice of faith. You're going to be the voice of fear. Okay,
now I know, I know you like her. I know
you encourage her, but you're going to just speak positive faith,
what God has called you to be. And you're going
to be the voice of the enemy. Just like what

(02:33):
she just just darkness and failure and that. And I
want you to get a little further away. Get a
little further away. Get a little further away, a little
further away. Now, I want you to start speaking to her.
Come on. Start speaking to her out loud at the
same time. Louder, girls, I know you can get louder.
I know you can get louder. Come on. Louder, louder! Yolanda,

(02:55):
I heard you scream before. Come on. Louder, louder! I
know you can get loud. I know you have an attitude.

S3 (03:03):
Did you drop your bag?

S2 (03:05):
Yeah. Two voices. Two voices. Two voices going on here. Okay. Okay. Pause.
Great job. Is it hard to listen to voices?

S4 (03:14):
Very hard.

S2 (03:15):
It's hard because your mind is going back and forth.
I'm going to tell you. I'm going to tell you
what happens. The trick to listening to two voices is
whatever voice you lean into, do whatever you do. And again,
do it again. Come on. You start it up, start
it up. Come on, start it up. Come on. Negativity.

(03:37):
Now I want you to move over here. Move over,
move over closer. Move over closer. Move over closer. Put
your ear to what she's saying. Put your ear to
what she's saying. Yeah. Give it up for these ladies.
Come on, let's give it up. I know you want
to be positive, I know that. Hey, here's what I
want to say. Go ahead. You can be seated now.
Thank you. Ladies, here's what I want to say. Listen,

(03:59):
we all live in that world. You can't silence. You
can't silence the voice of the enemy. You can't silence
the voice of fear and doubt and defeat and failure.
But you can choose what voice you lean into. You
can choose what voice you start leaning into. What voice
you start listening to. And listen right now, as I

(04:21):
talk today in this worship service, some of you are
struggling with the other voice, battling with the other voice.
The voice of the spirit is speaking to your heart,
giving you a destiny, a purpose, awakening you. And there's

(04:42):
the other voice. The Bible says that the enemy comes
to steal, kill and destroy. It's negative. It's defeatist. It
takes you away from God. It causes you to feel
like you can never be loved by God, accepted by God.
that God could never tolerate you, that you could never

(05:03):
have the faith like someone else has faith. It speaks
into your destiny, but it's a dark, dirty destiny. And
some of you are fighting with those two voices. And today,
this is what Jesus said to the man that was
struggling with the two voices. He said two things I
want you to do. Listen what he says. He says
Jesus told the synagogue ruler, don't be afraid. Just believe.

(05:38):
And lastly, number three, not only do you need to
choose where to turn, you need to choose what voice
to listen to. You need to turn your back on
the crowd. You know, there are times. That you have

(05:59):
to turn your back on the on the crowd. There
are times when the crowd is a jeering crowd. A
doubt filled crowd. And I want you to notice what
it says in verse 37. Jesus finally arrived to the place,
to the funeral. The mourners had already gathered. Back in

(06:29):
those days, there was a habit that if you had
a funeral, it was the poor, and the rich would
do the same thing. They would hire musicians and they
would hire professional mourners. Those who were hired to mourn
at a funeral. I'd love to have been in that
job interview. Okay, so you're applying to be a mourner, huh?

(06:53):
Let's see how you wail. Go ahead, give it a try. But.
So they would show up, and there were professional mourners
that would mourn at a funeral. And as Jesus approached
the house of Jairus, there was a large crowd and
there was a commotion. People were wailing and crying, music
was going and people were mourning. And there was the
body of a 12 year old girl, lifeless, pale, dead.

(07:25):
And as Jesus approached, I want you to notice what
it says. It says he did not let anyone follow
him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.
How many disciples did Jesus have? 12. How many disciples
did Jesus take with him? Why the three? I noticed

(07:49):
that missing from that list is Judas. Sometimes you need
to take the most faith filled Jesus Loving. Fanatical. Praising. Consecrated.

(08:09):
Jesus loving people that you can find and get them
around you. How many of you know? Sometimes you need
to get some people that are just crazy about Jesus
around you. Some people that are full of faith, some
people that carry their Bible, some people that you know
are going to pray. Some people that are not ashamed
of Jesus. Some people that you know, this person believes
with me. Sometimes you need to get a core of

(08:31):
people that are going to believe God with you. Peter,
James and John, the most faithful disciples that Jesus had.
And so Jesus walked in, especially when he knew that
he was going to walk into a cynical, laughing, critical crowd.

(08:52):
Jesus walks there with Peter, James, and John. He says
when he came to the home of the synagogue ruler,
Jesus saw the saw the commotion, people crying and wailing loudly.
And he went in and he said to them, why
all this commotion and wailing? And then Jesus says something
in faith that makes the crowd at the funeral laugh.

(09:15):
Because sometimes what we see in faith is different than
what people see in the natural. Sometimes what we see
in faith, we walk by faith, not by sight. Sometimes
what we see in faith makes people that have no
faith laugh at our faith. Jesus walks into the crowd.
People are mourning, wailing, and Jesus says, why are you

(09:36):
mourning and wailing? The little girl is not dead. And
then all the mourners that were mourning suddenly went to laughing.
You know, they were hired. If they could go from
wailing to laughing that fast, and they're laughing at Jesus
and snickering at Jesus because they don't understand that Jesus

(09:56):
is declaring in the spiritual realm what they have not
yet seen in the physical realm. Jesus is speaking into
the future. What will be? Not what is. He's speaking
into his resurrection power. What's going to come about? Not
what is. Some people look at your life today. And
if I told them in God what God sees in
you and what he sees in your future, they would

(10:18):
laugh at me and they would laugh at you. If
we declared over your life what God really has in
store for you because they can't see you that way,
they don't understand it that way. They can never imagine
you being that. There are men and women in this
auditorium that have. Five years ago you would have said

(10:38):
what they are today. People would have laughed and scoffed
at you because they could never imagine them in a
church like this, raising their hands, praising God, having a
Bible in there. They could imagine them on the street
with a gun tatted up, but they couldn't imagine them
following Jesus as men of God. Jesus said, the girl

(11:04):
is not dead. But they laughed at him and he said,
after he put them all out. By the way, if
you look at it in the Greek, it's not. Excuse me,
could you leave the room? Sorry. Could you could you
please exit the room? The verb used in the Greek

(11:27):
is a forceful. Get out. Jesus said to the mourners.
Out of here! Out! Get out! Sometimes there has to
be a holy boldness when you turn your your back on, on, on,
on a snickering, laughing crowd. Sometimes when you break with

(11:48):
the past, sometimes when you break with people that are
dragging you down, it's got to be forceful. Sometimes when you.
When you step away. It's gotta be sorry. No, I'm
not hanging out there anymore. No, I can't go out. No,

(12:09):
I'm not going to party with you. No, I'm not
snorting that line anymore. No, I'm not hooking up with
that guy anymore. No. I'm done. It's over. Sometimes you gotta.
It's gotta be forceful. Oh, why? Because you're a little
Jesus freak now you're a little holy roller. Oh, you're
too good for us now. Oh. That's it. Yeah. Go

(12:30):
hang out with your church people. You know, sometimes we
have to say, hey, I'm done. I'm done. Jesus pushed
the laughing crowd out of the room, and all that
was left in that room was Peter, James, John, the father,

(12:52):
the mother, and the corpse of the little girl. You know,
sometimes the hardest place to be. Is to stare at
her greatest challenge.

our message now before your moment.

S2 (14:22):
You know, sometimes the hardest place to be. Is to
stare at our greatest challenge. They're now looking at the
body of their 12 year old daughter that ran and played.
She's silent. Her heart's not beating. She's pale. She's cold.

(14:44):
They're in the room with her. And I believe that
sometimes God takes us to a point when we're coming
to our defining moment to look straight in the face
of our greatest challenge, straight in the face of that
which we seem. It feels like it's It's impossible for
that to change. When she was sick, they thought, well,

(15:05):
maybe Jesus could heal her. But now that she's dead,
they didn't come into their mind. They couldn't even conceive
that Jesus had the power to resurrect her. Some of
you have believed God for situations in your life, but

(15:27):
as the situation got worse, you stopped believing because you thought, well,
this is beyond a miracle. Well, maybe God could have
done it back then, but no. It could never happen now.

(15:47):
Maybe you have a son or daughter that's gone prodigal.
It's way out there. And a few years ago, you thought, well,
maybe they could change, but now you just stop believing.
That could change. He blotted them out like, no, it'll
never happen. Maybe it's your life. You thought at one time, yeah,
I could change. I could turn around. There's still hope

(16:12):
for me. I have a future. But you got up
this morning and you looked at yourself in the mirror.
And when you looked at yourself, you didn't see faith.
You didn't see hope. You didn't say, yeah, God could
do it. You looked and you thought, I'll never change.
I'll never be able to get over this. I'll never
come out of this hole. I'll never break that addiction.

(16:33):
I'll never stop being depressed. I'll never be able to
be a godly man or lead a good marriage, or
be that woman that God has called me to be.
You think that it's over. But I want to tell
you something. There is nothing that's over when you introduce
the resurrection power of the living Jesus. It's never over,

(16:54):
never over, never over. The Bible says that. They gathered
in the room. It's quiet now. All the laughters are

(17:16):
on the outside. All the mockers and the scorners are
on the outside. Now it's this the sniffling mother and
the dad breathing heavily. The disciples just quiet as they
stare at Jesus. Jesus walks to the body of the

(17:39):
little girl. And that hand, that one soon would be
hanging on a cross. That hand that would be pierced.
That hand that in a little while would be agonized
on a cross, and blood would trickle down his hand.
That hand that would be pierced for you and I.

(18:02):
The hand reached out to this little girl. The hand
of a carpenter. Rough, calloused, yet gentle. Strong hands. And
he takes within his hand the hand of the 12
year old girl. Cold. Pale, dark. And I imagine that

(18:26):
Jesus leaned over into the girl. This is the moment.
It's the divine moment. There's been choices that have been made.
The father chose to go to Jesus. That was a choice.
He pled. He cried, went to Jesus. He chose to

(18:51):
listen to the voice of faith instead of the voice
of fear. It was a choice he made. He chose
to turn his back on the crowd and get a
circle of faith. It's a choice he made. And now
the moment has come. It didn't just come. He chose.
He set the stage for this. And Jesus whispers into

(19:14):
the little girl. The 12 year old girl. He says,
Talitha koum. Well, that's a strange thing to say. You see,
there's two languages that were used in those days. The Greek,
which was the normal language of the people, the common language.

(19:35):
But then there was the dialect that was spoken in
that region called Aramaic. Jesus switched from speaking to Greek,
and he spoke in Aramaic. He he used the language
of the people to speak life into this girl. The
language of her heart. Translated. Get up, little girl. It's

(20:06):
as though he would lean over to someone from a
Hispanic heritage and say, Levantate Mia. There's a moment, there's
a pause. And then suddenly it tells us in the.
It tells us in Matthew. It says it uses in

(20:31):
Matthew chapter nine, verse 55. In another gospel it says,
and her spirit returned to her. The very Jesus that
had given life to Adam, the very God that raises
the dead, the very God that speaks into things as
though they were not, as though they are the God

(20:52):
that has miraculous power, the God that has no limit
to his hand, the God of the universe. Jesus Christ,
the Son of God, resurrected. Raise his life into this
little girl. Speaks into her destiny. Resurrection power. And this
is what I want to say to you. Listen. That

(21:13):
very God that spoke resurrection power into that little girl,
that very resurrection power of Jesus Christ, the son of
the living God, is here today, that very resurrection power
that was able to heal her and bring her to life.
God is here today bringing resurrection power into your life,

(21:34):
into your situation, into your challenge, into your mountain that
cannot be overcome. Are you prepared for the moment? Yes.
I believe that God has called some people at this
moment in time. I believe that some of you have
been making choices preparing for your moment today. I believe

(21:56):
some of you are in the choice making Process where
you're choosing to say, I'm going to turn to you, God,
I'm not going to listen to other voices. I'm going
to turn my back on the crowd and, oh, God,
I'm going to trust your power when you speak your
word above my thoughts.

S5 (22:22):
So you've heard it. Some of you right now have
been preparing for this moment. In fact, some of you,
God has been drawing you, preparing you, encouraging you. Just
like this account in the gospel where Jesus finally in
the moment said, Talita Kum and this little girl was raised.

(22:46):
And so I'd like to pray for those of you
that may be at a life changing moment, and you
sense that God is preparing you for a decision that
you're making, or a change that's happening. Father, I pray
in Jesus name right now for that person that today
knows that message was for them, and you've been leading

(23:09):
them to the road of decision to the place where, uh, yeah,
your power has to show up. And I pray in
Jesus name, that they would be willing right now to
make a choice, the choice that you have been leading
them to for a while. God, I pray that their
hearts would be sensitive to you, that their spirit would

(23:30):
be full of faith, and that this would be a
change moment that they would never forget. Father. So right now,
I pray, Holy Spirit, I pray that you would bring
about the changes that you have been working towards in
this person's life. We submit to you. We say yes, yes,

(23:52):
in Jesus name, Amen.
