Passover Video Show notes: Exodus 12

KEY Elements:

1.     10th day- get the lamb, 14th day- slaughter the lamb (4 days***- Jesus comes in as the “anointed one” on Nisan 10. John 12:12-16

2.     Lamb without blemish- points to Jesus: 1 Peter 1:17-21, John 19:4

3.     Slaughter at twilight-

4.     The Passover lamb was to be sacrificed in the temple on Nisan 14 (Preparation Day) at “twilight” (Exodus 12:6), or at the “twain of the evenings.”  In Hebrew, the literal translation of “twilight” is beyn ha’arbayim, or “between the evenings” (see Exodus 12:6 in Young’s Literal Translation).

6.     The last half of the daylight hours (from about noon to 6:00 p.m.) were further divided into two parts.  These were the minor evening oblation (noon to 3:00 p.m.) and the major evening oblation (3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.).

8.     Thus, “between the evenings” means between these two periods, or about 3:00 p.m.  During Spring-time, this is the time midway between the beginning of the sun’s descent into the west (about noon) and its setting (about 6:00 p.m.).  So the Passover lamb was killed at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Nisan 14.

10.  From the sixth hour of daylight (noon) until the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.), darkness came over the land; and it was about the ninth hour (about 3:00 p.m.) that Jesus died (Matthew 27:45-50; Mark 15:33-37; Luke 23:44-46).  Thus, Jesus died at the same time that Israel’s high priest slaughtered the Passover lamb in the temple.  This correlation indicates that Jesus was the ultimate Passover Lamb for humanity (1 Corinthians 5:7b). Exodus 12: 6, Matthew 27:45

11.  Blood on doorposts and lintel of the home (see brendas videos) -Exodus 12:7, Exodus 12:13.

12.  Eat the flesh on that night, roasted in fire: Exodus 12:8, Hebrews 12:28, Deut 4:23

the theme of God being a consuming fire — representing His holiness, judgment, and purifying presence — appears throughout Scripture, even if the exact phrase isn't used. (see below for verses that describe this attribute of our God)

1. Exodus 24:17, Leviticus 10:2, Numbers 16:35, Psalm 97:3, Isaiah 33:14, Ezekiel 1:27, Daniel 7:10

13.  None remain until morning- completely disappear- similar to Jesus disappearing when he rose again: Luke 24:1-6, John 6:53-56

➤ Just as the Passover lamb was eaten, so Jesus becomes our spiritual nourishment — He dwells within us, not left behind. This is not cannibalism, but a deeply spiritual truth: we take Him in by faith and He becomes part of us.

Symbolic Parallel:

  • The Passover lamb was: Chosen on the 10th, Killed on the 14th, Consumed that night, Not left behind.
  • Jesus: Entered Jerusalem on the 10th (Lamb chosen), Crucified on the 14th (Lamb slain), Buried before night, and His body not left to decay or be defiled. Spiritually consumed by believers — He abides in us.

 In Short:

  • Exodus 12:10 sets the foundation: the lamb must not remain.
  • John 6:53-56 shows how we "consume" Him spiritually — by faith — as the true Passover Lamb.
