Today I am going to dosomething a little bit different
.
I'm going to get a littlepersonal.
Recently, a person close to mereached out a woman in her early
60s.
She had just left her doctor'soffice perhaps it was her annual

physical feeling overwhelmedand a little bit frightened, a
little shaken, and her doctortold her she had high LDL
cholesterol and that she mayneed to go on a statin.
But something didn't sit rightwith her.
She didn't feel heard.
She wasn't in pain, she lives arelatively healthy, active
lifestyle.

She didn't want to go onmedication.
So she called me.
And here's where it gets evenmore real.
I was recently told the exactsame thing by my doctor.
At my own recent physical, mydoctor informed me that my LDL
is elevated and, I'll admit it,at first it rattled me.

I said to myself I'm a healthcoach.
How can this be?
How can this happen?
Because, even as a healthprofessional, there's something
about that moment when you'resitting in that exam room being
handed a number that soundsscary and perhaps a prescription
that feels like a life sentence.
So today's episode is dedicatedto every person who's ever left

wondering is this really my onlyoption?
Let's break it down.

Yes, as always, I am gratefulfor you joining me here on a
Breaking Boundaries forEntrepreneurs podcast.
And yeah, that little introstory.
You know it rattled me forabout five minutes when my
doctor told me that I had highLDL cholesterol, and after that
I said to myself all right, yay,something to work on, and I
know exactly the steps I need totake to be able to get this
(02:30):
level down.
But you know, more importantlyand we're going to talk about
this a little bit in today'sepisode is what is causing that
and the way that I found out andthe way that you can find out
too.
We're going to talk about that.
So stick around.
But first the truth about highLDL cholesterol.

First a few facts.
Over 94 million US adults age20 or older have total
cholesterol levels higher than200.
That's 200 milligrams perdeciliter than 200.
That's 200 milligrams per decdeciliter.

Nearly 29 million have levelsover 240 milligrams per
deciliter.
And the most commonrecommendations?
Yeah, you probably already knowstatins, but I will tell you.
Well, statin drugs are oftenthe go-to when LDL cholesterol
is elevated, as opposed to HELcholesterol.
And LDL is not bad.
We're going to talk about thatin a minute.
It's deemed as bad cholesterol,but it's not.

If you didn't have it, you'd bedead.
But here's what we're veryrarely told that statins can
deplete things like coenzyme q10it's a nutrient vital for
energy and for brain health andthat statin really rips that
from the body.
Statins may also reduce vitamink2 levels, which affects
(03:59):
calcium balance.
So super, super importantremember it's all about balance
in the body, calcium balance inthe arteries and in the bones.
So that can lead to furtherthings like calcification in the
arteries or weak and brittlebones.
Statins can also cause sideeffects like muscle pain and
(04:23):
brain fog and fatigue.
And the most concerning of allis they don't address the root
cause of why cholesterol is highin the first place.
You're not.
You don't have high cholesterolbecause you're deficient in a
statin.
So let me just leave that therefor you.
Now, what really drives highcholesterol?

In functional medicine wealways ask why is the body out
of balance?
Or I should say, in integrativehealth we always ask Functional
medicine doesn't necessarilyalways ask that, but we do use
functional medicine to discoverthe root causes.
So here are some root causes ofelevated LDL cholesterol.
Number one inflammation fromgut issues, from toxins from

processed foods or hiddeninfections.
I know, hands down, my mindimmediately went to boy.
It's been a while since I ranmy inflammation lab
post-inflammatory viral syndrome.
So what is that?
Post-inflammatory viralsyndrome is the actual clinical
term for the words, the termsthat have been thrown around
(05:30):
there, like long covid ormyalgic encephalomyelitis or
chronic fatigue syndrome.
That is nothing more thanpost-inflammatory viral syndrome
and it's.
What happens is the bodybecomes inflamed.
And when the body's inflamed,then that can drive up LDL
cholesterol.
We're going to talk about whythat is in just a minute.
But some other root causesLiver dysfunction.
(05:53):
Since the liver regulatescholesterol, it's super
important to optimize the liverand that's why we always I don't
want to say start there.
That's like step number threefor liver optimization.
The first step is functionallab testing.
Second step is to make surethat we're having one to two
regular bowel movements everysingle day, making sure that
(06:15):
we're not holding on to toxicity, because you know, if we're not
pooping, then things aregetting backed up and stored and
those things are toxic and wedon't want those in the body.
So liver dysfunction is, orliver optimization is the third
step.
That's don't want those in thebody.

That's where we want tooptimize the liver.
So much happens in the liver,like it's a storage unit, it's a
filter, it's uh, you know, it'sa, it's a producer of certain

enzymes and it's a regulator,and one of the things that it
regulates is cholesterol.
Next is insulin resistance.
Now, most people associateinsulin resistance uh, that
being driven by sugar.
Yes, that's important to makesure that you know we're not
overdoing it with processedsugars.
However, stress leads toinsulin resistance.
(07:01):
Poor sleep leads to insulin,insulin.
Poor sleep also leads toinflammation, like if you're
getting inconsistent, or Ishould say consistently sleeping
poorly, that's going to driveup inflammation.
It's going to tank your liverfunction.
It's going to drive up insulinresistance and so much Poor
sleep is a stressor.
(07:21):
Stress remember, stress issomething, something troubling,
resulting in essential systemshutdown.
So that something troublingcould be external, as I always
say, like kids, career and cashflow, or it could be internal,
like liver dysfunction,inflammation, heavy metal
toxicity, like what's.
Let's go a level deeper.
What's driving the inflammation?
What's driving the poor sleep?
(07:42):
We're going to keep going alayer deeper until we get to the
bottom and the root cause.
That's what we're looking for.
Next, for root causes nutrientdeficiencies, things like fiber
you know I'm not always talkingabout supplements Could be your
macros.
You could not be getting enoughfiber, you could be not getting
enough protein in your diet andthat's considered a
macronutrient.
(08:03):
But then we can get into someof the micronutrients.
Things like magnesium is superimportant and you know back to
those statin drugs that can alsodeplete your magnesium.
So you can start to see howthis is a vicious cycle where
doctor prescribes a statin,statin depletes magnesium,
magnesium drives up cholesteroland the number never goes down.
(08:25):
So and then they might beincreasing the dosage of the
statin, which would then furtherdeplete the magnesium.
So you can see how that keepsgoing around and around.
I mentioned omega-3s.
If we have a uh, an imbalanceof omega-3 to omega-6s, what's
that going to do?
It's going to drive upinflammation and that's going to
elevate the ldl cholesterol.
(08:47):
And the body is not broken.
It's doing exactly what it wasdesigned to do.
Next root cause could beoxidative stress.
So we talked about stressbefore.
Oxidative stress is more of thebody.
You know.
You can equate it to rust.
The body is actually rustingfrom the inside out.
(09:08):
It's oxidizing.
That's what happens with rust.
What is rust?
It's iron oxide.
There's too much oxygen to theiron and it starts to oxidize or
rust.
So oxidative stress is akin tothe body rusting from the inside
out.
And what that looks like is freeradicals, which are, you know,
now we're getting into theelectricity of the body.
(09:31):
Free radicals are electronsmissing.
It's too many positivelycharged electrons, so we want to
dissipate those.
We want negative electrons andions, so free radicals.
I don't want to go too far intobiology here.
What happens with free radicalsis they damage the body's cells
and vessels.
(09:52):
We don't want that.
We don't want that.
But when that happens, then aninflammatory response initiates
and in response to thatinflammatory response, our
cholesterol, our LDL cholesterolrises, and here's what most
people don't realize.
Cholesterol itself, as I said,is not the enemy, it's the
body's patch kit.
(10:12):
This is why the cholesterolraises.
It rises when there's damage torepair and when that damage is
systemic, when it's all over theplace, it's just going to keep
going up and up.
The body is doing exactly whatit was meant to do and it's not
doing that because it'sdeficient in a statin.
The body is just unable torepair itself, so those levels
(10:33):
become balanced again.
So what we do in integrativehealth is we balance the body.
Dis-ease cannot exist in ahealthy body.
We get the body so healthy thatdis-ease cannot exist.
So how?
You might be wondering how dowe find the real answers In our

We use those at-home precisionfunctional lab tests that go
beyond basic blood work, forexample, minerals and metals
tests done with a simple hairsample and it tells us about the
amount of stress the body isunder, how the body is

When I say lipid metabolism,that is your HDL, your LDL, your

total cholesterol, lipidmetabolism, you think fat
metabolism.
And so we use something calledthe stress, mood and metabolism

And then how do we rebalance?
Naturally, right.
So now we have the, we have theinformation we need on root
causes.
But what do we do to rebalance?
Once we understand what'sdriving your numbers, we use a
clinically proven holisticprotocol to rebalance your body.

When I say a holistic protocol,you know that may sound like
it's one size fits all, but it'snot.
These lab tests make itbio-individualized.
For, you know, maybe you don'tneed more omega-3s in your day.
Maybe you're eating, you know,salmon and sardines five to six
times a week, which most peopleare not.
You know, and maybe it'sthyroid that's off.

And it's not because thethyroid's broken, it's because
the thyroid is responding tosomething either nutrient
deficiency or toxicity.
You know, maybe chlorine levelsare elevated that can affect
thyroid.
Maybe there's too much fluoride.
Well, any amount of fluoride istoo much fluoride in the body.

But all of these things cansuppress thyroid production or
thyroid conversion, as well asliver function can certainly
have an impact.
So I talked about free t3 andfree t4.
Free t3 is the usable formthat's converted from free t4

and that conversion is donemostly in the liver, and if the
liver is not optimized and itcan't make that conversion,
we're going to have some thyroidissues and our metabolism is
going to be tanked.
And now we're going to havesome issues that the body is
responding to by initiatingelevated LDL cholesterol, if
that makes sense.
So you know, some of theseprotocols can be
anti-inflammatory nutrition withhigh fiber and high
(15:16):
phytonutrient rich foods.
It can also be targetedsupplementation like omega-3s
and antioxidants, and liversupported supportive herbs,
which helps with thatdetoxification process, which
leads me to detoxificationsupport can be another part of
the protocol to clear toxinsthat disrupt hormones and liver

And then, of course, gentlemovement.
Um, you know, sometimescrushing it at the gym is not
the answer and that's going tostress the body and cause ldl
elevation.
So, yeah, you know, boot campsand HIIT trainings every single
day and, and you know, 60 minute, 90 minute workouts, um, fasted
in the morning, or you know,when you're exhausted at that's

a stressor on the body.
So too much exercise canactually elevate LDL cholesterol
, you know.
So it's.
You've got to go through thatgraduated exercise program Like
where is your body measuring inall of these metrics and are we
doing too much exercise?
Are we not doing any exercise?
So, you know, starting with thatgentle movement, improving

sleep, regulating the nervoussystem super important uh
factors in regulatingcholesterol, naturally and above
all, a plan that ispersonalized and the key is to
make it sustainable.
Right, eating less andexercising more is not a
sustainable plan for weight lossbecause you can only dial back
(16:41):
your diet.
And what are you gonna eat?
500 or 1,000 calories a day,like that's not sustainable.
Or are you gonna just keepturning up the exercise?
That's not sustainable.
So eating less is a stressor onthe body, exercising more is a
stressor on the body and it'sbalancing those hermetic
stressors that's the key tohealth and longevity, because if
(17:01):
you're doing those in extremes,if you're not eating enough
calories, you're not gettingyour macros, you're, uh,
micronutrient deficient, you'reover exercising.
That's going to actually that'scounterintuitive to weight loss
and that's actually going tostress the body, put it in fight
or flight mode, make it retainbody fat and you're you're
(17:22):
actually going to put on morepounds rather than lose pounds.
Uh, you know.
So, that being said, naturegives us what we need.
We just need to listen.
We need to test and thenrebalance.
You know, go through the fivehours.
We want to reveal what theunderlying root causes are.
We want to remove thetoxicities.
We want to rebalance.
You know, go through the fivehours.

Then we want to retain thoseresults.
And I think I'm missing a ohyeah, we want to rebalance.
We want to retain those resultsfor our five-hour process.

So, final thoughts here you'renot broken.
If you've ever been told thatyou need to go on meds and that
didn't feel right to you, you'renot alone.
Now, don't get me wrong.
There's no shame in takingmedication when it's truly
needed.
Sometimes there's a time andplace for those medications.
So I'm not against having aprimary care physician.

I'm not against conventionalmedicine.
I am not against takingmedications when they are truly
needed.
But don't settle for justmanaging your numbers when you
could heal the root cause andfeel better for the long haul.
Your body isn't broken.
It's simply speaking to you andyou deserve a team that listens
