Speaker 1 (00:01):
Good evening.
So today is the day Came backfrom the weekend trip.
We wanted to close the studiodown in person and unfortunately
we had prior plans thatsuperseded that and so, okay,
good, I got my keys.
So it's Sunday and tonight I'mgoing in and shutting everything

(00:24):
down.
So the bank is basically goingto start coming in and seizing
assets and doing court stuff.
Um, and I I'm not.
I am not in a spot to allowaccess for the studio because,
uh, it's not my property anymore.
So heading in putting off somesigns saying, hey, the business
is closed.
Um, thank you for you, for yourpatronage.

(00:46):
Here's some alternativelocations to go.
Then a handful of emails toother people, some to key
holders, some to staff, the bigemail blast to members.
And I'll go through mychecklist tomorrow, because
tonight is just get the businessdone, but there's a big
checklist to make sure, likeeverything is oh shoot, I forgot
a.
But there's a big checklist tomake sure everything is oh shoot
, I forgot a box.

(01:07):
There's a big checklist to makesure I don't forget anything.
And it's going to be sucky.
Except I don't want thatmindset that it's going to be
sucky.
It's just going to be verysurprising and very quick.
No one is expecting this.
No one sees this coming Heck.
Even on the drive home today wewere getting camera alerts that

(01:28):
some instructors are doingtraining today to prepare for
the week ahead, and so themanagers and staff like nobody
knows, only the bank knows thatwe're behind and the landlord
knows that we're behind.
So tonight and tomorrow isgoing to be a blindside to
everyone.
Um, which is unfortunate, and Idon't want that to be the last

(01:49):
thought that people have of theof the studio, but unfortunately
that's what's going to behappening.
Um, I'll do my checklisttomorrow, cause I don't want to,
um, get distracted by that onmy way there, but tonight was
just making sure, like I haveall the admins and permissions
to do what needs to happen.
I'll be pausing all the groupsand freezing everything so that
people don't go toxic and crazyand tagging.

(02:11):
I'll be deactivating myFacebook because, for whatever
reason, people can still tag me.
My wife and I tested that andeven though I said only I can
tag myself on posts, she couldstill like create a post that
tagged me in particular.
So that was really surprising.
So, for better or worse, I'lljust be putting my Facebook on
snooze.
For a long time.

(02:31):
I won't be seeing stuff onthere for a while.
People could DM me on Instagram,I guess, but unfriended all the
false friendships that I had,and when I say false I mean like
hey, I saw you once and I saidhi at the studio.

(02:53):
So I removed all those Um andthere's a few remaining of like
legitimate friendships that Ithink are valid beyond the
studio.
Um, but I just had to speed, doit quick.
It was like 150 people.
I think I have like 30remaining and so, um, yeah, it
just feels weird, like it feelsvery weird.
Um, doing this.

(03:14):
I feel like it's um, like I'mdoing like a surprise attack on
my friends and I remember when Ibought the now, the guy that
sold it to me said he wished hekept like personal business that
barrier more black and white, and I feel like I blurred that a
little bit.
He blurted a ton Um and I won'tgo into I don't know if I ever

(03:38):
said like well, how he blurredthat, but um, that was a barrier
that people like came over backand forth on and he did not
have that barrier between thetwo and so people like could
text him about their membership, pricing changes and just all
sorts of things and so, uh, Ifeel like I did that a little

(04:00):
bit here, but I definitely didnot have a black and white
barrier.
And whenever I see like tvshows where, like bosses do
nothing with their subordinatesor like their employees, it's
tough.
Like on one side, it's cool tosee like hey, we're gonna have
like a barbecue and we're gonnahave like an amicable
relationship and so like there'ssomething of meaning and
purpose beyond just thetransaction.

(04:22):
But then when something likethis happens, like it's very,
it's a lot more painful.
And on the flip side, likeright now, like years ago, I've
worked with someone at a houseflipping company and he did the
exact same thing.
I woke up, my email didn't workon Monday morning, meeting with
an investor.
I messaged him after like hey, what's going on?

(04:44):
Like I have no clue what'sgoing on.
He's like, oh, everyone gotlaid off, like it's just me now.
I couldn't keep everyone and Ifelt personally betrayed.
But at the end of the day, likeit was his business, it was his
livelihood For him, like he andhis family, they only they had
like one less than a month ofcash left between personal and

(05:06):
business, where things got shutdown Like I don't think they end
up going bankrupt, but they hadto do something, and so that
was very painful and it took melike three weeks to message him
back into like I don't know ifhe knows this, but like I told
him like that I was unfairlyterminated and like he owned

(05:31):
that really well in hindsight, and so I think it's a little
different.
He laid everyone off or firedeveryone, but the business kept
going.
In my case, like the business isimploding and so everyone is
implicitly laid off from thatand so, uh, the business has
dying before the employmentstatus is, I guess.
So I don't for what it's worththat people think like this is

(05:54):
easy.
It's not.
Folks would say like ceos makemillions and billions of dollars
.
It's 10 people that do and nota literal tent.
It's a handful of people, andthe folks that get there are a
very unique breed, um, and avast majority of businesses are
hanging on by a thread, and it'sthe folks that are not paying

(06:16):
themselves that are working twojobs they don't even tell you
about.
They try to keep the doors openand if you've

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
