Hick (00:17):
Welcome to Episode 42 of
the Busted Buttons video game
podcast. Take four of the introto CS we can just not get our
shit together. Alexa, just shutthe fuck up. You messed me up
anyway, we're gonna talk. It wasI had to put that on the
checklist for us. Super NintendoWorld in Japan. I watched a tour
(00:40):
of it today on YouTube. Just avery cool place. We're gonna
talk about a man and a womanprotagonists, something that
just recently came across in agame where they actually use
both very cool, we're gonna talkabout binary makes like, if you
already have a game. Yeah, theremake is a little bit of an
upgrade. But how much do youhave to get to actually purchase
that remake is about games oftoo much text, just 70 games,
(01:03):
this is too much text. Noteverybody reads? Okay, I don't
like read this. Let me get tothe action. And then we talked
about fast traveling a lot, butwe're gonna talk about it in
more modern and futuristicgames. Y'all know what game
we're gonna talk about rightthere. And then lastly, if we
have time, we're gonna talkabout next gen and voice
assistant and I made sure toturn by Lexa this time for the
(01:25):
intro when I mentioned the headButton Red. First off, I want to
go right into Super NintendoWorld. I don't think you've had
too much of a chance to checkthis out. Like, you know, just
look it up watch videos orwhatever. But what are your
opinions so far? Because thereare some ones coming to the US.
Red (01:40):
I'm very excited for it. I
mean, first of all, we've seen
the success of Harry PotterWorld at Universal. Yeah, I've
seen the success of galaxy'sedge at Disney and
unfortunately. Thanks COVID Ihave not gotten to go experience
either of those and I wouldabsolutely love to see a world
built around Nintendo and likeyou said I have not looked into
it a ton. I've read some of thearticles and looked at some of
(02:02):
the previews and the concept artand all that it excites me like
I love that these companies aretaking their intellectual
property and trying to findanother way to get fans engaged
and what better way than aninteractive theme park slash
world that you can walk throughbecause if they can deliver half
as good as everyone talks about, like I said, the Harry Potter
(02:26):
World and the Star Wars worldlike if they can come anywhere
close to that then I amabsolutely all for it because
those two theme parks havegotten rave reviews so Nintendo
can come through and you knowyou have so many great Nintendo
first party properties you'vegot you've got Mario of course
the big one but you get Zeldayou Donkey Kong Starfox Metroid
(02:49):
like the number of zones orwhatever you want to call it
within the the Nintendo Worldthat you could eventually do is
mind blowing and the one thatmakes me very, very excited. is
you know, Mario Kart Yeah, MarioKart world, like just because
you're riding go karts in MarioKart, of course is very fun.
Driving go karts in real life isan absolute blast. Hey,
Hick (03:13):
Mario Kart ride from what
I've seen is actually a roller
coaster. So we drove them ontrack, which is a very big
missed opportunity. But stillany room coaster is kind of
cool. Here's what I love aboutit. Yeah, this is not all
Nintendo. This is just supernintendo. Like it's very
focused. And that's why I lovebecause one it's got that retro
(03:34):
gaming feel to it to thenostalgia so I mean, yeah, they
have so many properties. Theyhave so many different places
they can go but they kept thisvery simple. They went Super
Nintendo and then they wentMario Mario Kart and then also
Yoshis island which I have notplayed I tried it one time I was
like Baby Mario is kind of weirdand so you know when I had the
(03:54):
Super Nintendo mini classicchampions limited edition
version two I think but um,anyways, like
Red (04:03):
Super NES on switch online
or whatever you pay for Oh
Hick (04:08):
t smart as you know, I
probably would have played on
that because of the portablecapability by literally I just
love like said they have a lotof properties but it's so cool
that they just focus on thisthese three keep it simple keep
it to super
Red (04:23):
simple so far.
Hick (04:24):
Yeah, this place it just
looks amazing and as you would
guess it looks dead up like theSuper Nintendo Mario so right
Oh, no, man just like if theymade it all the time. No, yes,
that would be very cool. Butthere's so much within Nintendo
that I think if you're justgonna put this park in this
certain area, which I'm notseeing the Japan Universal
Studios layout, but I wouldguess it's just like a little
(04:45):
section of that part. Obviouslyit's not the whole fucking Park
y'all know, section, but um, youknow, you can try to do too much
in a little space and theydidn't try to do that. They kept
it simple, and I absolutelyloved that. We got one coming to
Hollywood. Got one coming toSingapore. We won't be visiting
that one probably, at least nowfor 20 kids and everything, but
(05:05):
I'm very excited about the onethat's coming up in Orlando
because Orlando is a place thatI can make it to. But just
that's an easy
Red (05:13):
trip for us.
Hick (05:14):
I mean, just I've talked a
lot about how specials like
Super Nintendo is to me likethat is the gaming system that I
grew up on. Yes, I had theNintendo Yes, I had the Nintendo
64. But when I think about myprime gaming days as an early
teen, or even before my teenageyears, it was super nintendo. So
going to see a place like this, like I am pumped. Maybe that's
(05:35):
one of the first places we'lltake the kids when this
hopefully is COVID situationsall fixed, you know, who knows
what's gonna actually happen,but no, I don't think it's going
to open it or land until maybe2022. So hopefully we can get
all this stuff wrapped up by theend. I hope so. Cuz people are
still struggling or they it's,like, seen it, man. But um, you
(05:56):
gotta be excited about beingsuper nintendo and all that
nostalgia.
Red (05:59):
I absolutely am because I
was also uh, you know, we're not
that far apart in age you know,Super Nintendo was was really
what got me hooked in gaming.
And yeah, you're absolutelyright. Like I'm glad they're
keeping it focused from thestart and if you if they
eventually expand into the otherfranchise, like you said,
they're doing Super Mario MarioKart Yoshis Island, you know, if
they expand into the otherproperties, they're
Hick (06:20):
already talking about
expanding into Donkey Kong,
Red (06:23):
which would be which would
be great. I mean, you get the
jungle going on. Oh, that wouldlook amazing for why not Zelda
You know, that's
Hick (06:29):
one of their biggest
properties. Well, my
Red (06:31):
only thought is that you
know, for now, they're focusing
strictly on the Mario propertieswhich Donkey Kong originally
with Jumpman was kind of a Marioproperty, but you know it on the
other hand, it gives them thingsthat they can cycle into down
the line like they can say, okay, we've had Yoshis Island
world for 10 years now fiveyears Whatever, let's let's
(06:52):
cycle that out and site you soyou don't necessarily need to
expand into a bigger space. Youhave to give it a facelift and
give it a refresh and then maybeyou bring in the Zelda or you
bring in like you said the StarFox the f0 the Kirby you know
all these other properties andit's just it gives you options
to kind of refresh it it's nodifferent than casinos. Yes, the
(07:13):
way I kind of look at it becausecasinos every what five or seven
years. Caesars will become ahorseshoe and then it will
become a venue that's
Hick (07:22):
a very different concept
from Nintendo Roman Sorry, but I
would love it Super NintendoWorld ahead a bar and you say
mega casino but I agree withthat comparison right there but
here's Okay, first of all, likeI just said, if they have a bar
Oh my God, I'm moving in there, man. I'm just like, you know, I
(07:42):
love my family and everythingbut if you put me in a Super
Nintendo World with a bar Oh,I'm not leaving that place. But
as I was watching this video,Nintendo themed
Red (07:50):
beers and cocktails and oh,
that'd be awesome. The
Hick (07:53):
video I was watching it
did happen the team the tendo
theme foo which is like youknow, mushrooms and Yeah,
awesome. Up there too. But um,one of the things that was cool
is, is from the video watch wasShigeru Miyamoto, Miyamoto,
whatever his name is.
Red (08:08):
Mario and Zelda champion
jerk,
Hick (08:09):
I just can never remember
it. But um, they are focused on
the experience in like, whatthey do in Japan is they have
these power of bands that youput around your wrist, and you
can hit blocks and hit all thesedifferent things, do activities.
So it's not just a place thatyou're walking around, looking
at the scenery, like you know,Ron rollercoasters, like they
are making it about theexperience in action activities,
(08:31):
which I think is what a videogame land should be. So I just
love that they're doing that andyou know, can't take it off
video gaming, I think a lotabout this with like, malls and
stuff like we've seen malls andlike GameStop for example. It's
not a mall, it's a store, butthe store usually inside of a
mall, but I'm very much insidejust aren't making the money
(08:52):
that they used to. And I thinkone of the problems is, is that
they're not making it about theexperience, because you're gonna
get beat with online shoppingand delivering everything. Like
you're gonna get beat by allthat people can beat your
prices. So you had to make itabout the experience. I don't
think a lot of malls are tryingto do that. But here's Super
Nintendo World, they are tryingto do that. And I think they're
(09:13):
nailing it out of the park. Andanother thing that love is right
before we move on, is that thisis kind of an adult play. It's a
good place definitely. But alsoan adult themed theme park but
you know, a theme area Soabsolutely, I just love I can't
wait to come to Orlando Butanyways, both men and women are
going to be excited aboutvisiting Super Nintendo Land or
(09:35):
world you know why people saysuper tenderly because it's
actually a fucking gameactually. No, it's not game it's
a land that has landed that's onthe 3ds y'all get where I'm
going with this but um butconcept with the whole this like
you know men and women thing andthat is with AC baja like we
seen a lot of games you got picka man or a woman as your
(09:56):
protagonists. ac Valhallaactually like gives you an
option of those things. But thenalso gives you an option of
choosing like 50% officesexactly 50% but they say what
the time is right you will playas a female and then you also
plays a male so I just thoughtthat was a very cool concept is
really given me a viewpoint ofthis game from different angles
(10:16):
as both a woman and a man. Ijust absolutely love it in one.
Is this a concept that you evercome across into? How do you
feel about it?
Red (10:25):
It is actually a concept
I've seen even actually within
the Assassin's Creed seriesbecause in Assassin's Creed
Syndicate, you got to play asthe twin brother and sister and
I've totally forgotten theirnames, but I thought like
depending on the various questsor side quests or missions you
played as the male You play asthe brother and in some you
played as the sister so itdoesn't shock me that Assassin's
(10:49):
Creed would be one of the seriesseries is is
Hick (10:53):
it's okay, I can't I can't
say your me moto. Well, we
Red (10:57):
can't say anything I know.
But no so like it doesn't shockme that Assassin's Creed would
be one of the series to reallypush this forward because like I
said, syndicate really was ashowcase for you play part of
the game as a female you playpart of the game is the male and
then they got away from it therefor a while. Yeah, in in
origins, you the main characterwas a male, but occasionally you
(11:18):
played his his wife, and then anodyssey you could select at the
very beginning of the game, likeyou mentioned, yeah. 100%
through as a male or as afemale. Gaming. Right, right.
You've seen we've seen that ingaming for a long time, like
going back to like, even MassEffect when you had FEM Shep and
MailChimp was the whole bigargument. You know, your
Commander Shepard, yes, you canpick a male or a female. And you
(11:40):
know, and some people preferredone voice actor and some people
prefer the other voice actor.
And so I love the idea where agame either has multiple
protagonists that you switchbetween, or gives you options to
play like, Okay, in this stage, you're going to play as a man in
this set, you know, if you wantto play as a woman over here,
(12:01):
you can play as a woman. And,and to me, it's just, I feel
like it is that next step. But Iwill say I think the only thing
that is kind of lost, where youget the flexibility to pick is
that you can't tell a uniquelymale or a uniquely female story.
If the it's it's basically thesame dialogue. Yeah, different
(12:23):
skin, on the character. And, andI know like, there's so many
different experiences for menand women in the world. I am not
any kind of like social expert, but like video games told from a
woman's point of view, or from awoman's perspective, versus a
men's perspective are verydifferent. So I liked and I know
I'm kind of going a little offthe rails here. But I kind of
like where syndicate said, wehave side missions setup that
(12:46):
you play as a female, and youget a female's perspective. And
then you also have sidemissions, you play as a male,
and you have a male'sperspective, the games where you
choose up front, it literally isthe exact same dialogue, the
exact same experience, just witha different body cyberpunk that
we'd both just played through,yes, there's a little
differences. But at the sametime, it's still basically the
(13:08):
same game, whether you play as amale or a female. So I'm curious
how Valhalla handles that?
Because I haven't played it yet.
Can you speak any more to that
Hick (13:16):
those differences are big
right now, I think as a male and
a female going through the gamedifferently. But I think as we
get into the future, I thinkthey're going to start bringing
those together, which I think isa really cool concept. You know,
it's kind of like, you know, thewhole women are equal, and they
can do same thing as men withoutbeing a father of three
daughters. I absolutely lovethat. I don't think we go to the
future. Yeah, those differencesare there. But you know, like,
(13:38):
having three daughters, I hopethat we do kind of bring those
together, like, you know, andthose do become more similar
stuff. So, I don't know, justthe whole concept really just
excites me. And, like, you gottabe careful to stories, like, you
know, in a story structure, likecost center, sometimes it is
hard to tell, like, you know, the same story as like, you
know, using a man or a woman. Sothis is why like AC Baja,
(13:59):
because it uses them, like ithas two different stories, but
it's bringing them together. AndI really think that games going
forward, if you're going to usea male and a female protagonist,
I think you kind of gotta havetwo different stories that you
bring together. Like, I thinkhe's I don't know, I've never
developed a game but one thingis very rare to have the same
story and put like your male andone female on the other and kind
(14:22):
of figure that out. Maybe it'snot, but I feel like it would be
but I mean, this kind of givesus an opportunity I think like I
think some people get be intheir brain like oh, here's this
particular story and I want tobe a male in like I would like
to see more females in games asprotagonists like we got some so
far and we're getting more now Iwould also like to see men like
you know, it really depends onon the franchise like in Zelda
(14:43):
right? I was so fucking sick andtired of everybody want a female
like it's not and don't be ownersix is blah blah blah no have
three fucking daughters ain'tsexist. guy didn't quit using a
lazy fucking argument. That's alazy fucking argument. No, just
I like I'm a traditionalist.
Yes, I like mills in my Zeldagames, and As a protagonist, but
guess what? In Tomb Raider, orin Horizon Zero Dawn, I like it
to be female because that's whatI played. So it just depends on
(15:07):
the franchise in what you want.
So don't use that lazy asargument, but just,
Red (15:14):
I'm very excited. That's
going that's one thing I really
liked Where? Literally, origins?
Yeah, like you only got to playas a female for a little bit.
But if they took that concept, and expand it a little bit, were
for part of it. You're the dudepart of it. You're the girl and
like, but their storiesintertwined? Yeah, they did
bring. Yes, it was very much amale dominated story. But you
(15:35):
did have the sections you playedas, as the female and the
stories did intertwine. They didcome together if they could take
that onto a broader level. LikeI think that'd be really good.
And you know, some games do lendthemselves better, to a male
story. Some games Yeah, absolutely lend themselves
better to a female story. And Ithink if more franchises,
(15:56):
especially more open world ones, where there's so much to do so
much to so many stories, you cantell within an open world game,
that gives you more flexibilityto play around with that gender
a little bit. Whereas I get ifyou're telling a very cinematic
straight line, you know, youknow, kind of rail driven story,
(16:16):
yes, you probably want to focuson one or the other, whichever
story you're trying to tell, like Cinderella worked great as
a female driven story. Gears ofWar works great as a male driven
story, although years five hasKate the female as one of the
main characters. So it, I justthink it all depends on the type
of game, the type of storyyou're trying to tell. And, you
(16:37):
know, marrying the two conceptstogether, I think does work best
in an open world game wherethere's so many stories and so
much space to explore bothsides, whereas in a more on the
rails straight line game, you'reprobably you know, you're
talking like an eight to 10 hourgame, yeah, probably only going
to tell it from a male'sperspective, or from a female
(16:57):
perspective. So it's just,
Hick (17:01):
there's room for all the
above, I think, maybe realize
that it more games arestructured this way, we could
have a male and a female in eachgame. And he wouldn't have to
make a choice, I think nothaving to make a choice. And get
both of them. I think it's justa very cool concept. I just, I
really like it. Like, I wouldlike to see more females in
games out. But you know, I alsohave my games where I do once
(17:22):
emails and so like, it's abouthelping the world. Like I just,
I think it's a great way to justkind of bring it all together
and allow both genders and tome, it's just very, very, very
exciting. We want to say we'renot trying to offend anybody by
that conversation, because I'mactually pro woman and pro women
being in games because thirdtime father of three daughters,
so but just kind of want to talkabout that's very cool. And I
(17:45):
think it's in a game from bothgender viewpoints. I just
thought that was really fun. Butanyways, one place you won't
usually see a genderprotagonists update isn't a
remake because the games arebeen made before. Yeah. Which
brings me to an exciting remake.
That is that just came outrecently. And that is Super
Mario 3d world, and I don'tthink you're going to buy it.
(18:07):
But here's how I want though topay these remakes like this,
where you're basically it's aport is what we're that's what
it is. These games like, Okay, what what makes you buy them?
What makes you want them?
Red (18:20):
It's tough to say because
it is different for every
remake, like, okay, let's sayfor example, the one we're
talking about the Super Mario 3dworld just released, I have no
intention of buying it. I playedit on the Wii U. I thought it
was just fine. I didn't think itwas a you know, the Second
Coming up Mario, whatever, I wasjust fine. It was a solid Mario
game, but nothing exceptional.
And this port does not seem tobe anything that will blow me
(18:44):
out of the water. Like I've reada little bit of the previews of
the bouncers fury, the the addon that comes with it. And even
that just sounds I'm still like, you know, whatever. You know. So
to me, what makes me want to goout and buy a port or a remake
is it either has to offersomething a totally different
experience like Yeah, perfectexample. Link's Awakening.
(19:06):
Obviously I you know, we talkedabout this in our last episode,
love Link's Awakening suchnostalgia, you know, powerful
feelings for me. But they, onethere hasn't been a new version
since the Gameboy Color. Butthen just the upgraded graphics,
the upgraded music, you know, getting it onto a modern console
was fantastic. Whereas somethinglike Mario 3d world just came
(19:29):
out last generation. Yeah, I'vestill got my Wii U sitting right
here. I might be the only one.
But I don't have my originalGameboy sitting here. I can't
pick up and play Link'sAwakening right now. I mean,
yes, I could dig my way out. Buteven then you're talking to
generations. So for me a bigpart of it. is you know,
(19:51):
accessibility. Can I alreadyplay this game somewhere else
that easily enhance Yeah, and belike we said, does it offer
something totally new New and tome Mario 3d world does not fit
either of those categories butwhat do you think are you going
to be buying it
Hick (20:07):
on this ship man no I have
not bought yet but I do plan on
buying soon you know I'm sittingthere looking at aged claim as I
guess my wife might be listeningto this I spent 10 hours on sale
but haven't gotten around to ityet but um, no makers for me,
but he can't talk about like, you know how like, what's your
accessibility like my weavesthat sent out anymore? Like Why
(20:28):
the hell would my week like youknow, I'm almost at PS five
there's a spot for the PS fiveright now there's just not one
they're empty and depressing. Igot a PS five Xbox series x
which I do have that one andthen on top two ps4 Pro, which I
don't know if they'll stay thereand then my Nintendo Switch
that's all I have right now.
Could I put Well, I want to saycould I put more no because the
(20:50):
damn new next gen is so big Theonly space but um I don't have
my wheel hooked up you know? Idon't know I'm talking about
that because it doesn't fuckingmatter. All right, I'm buying
this game because God damn itit's a Mario game on not new
Mario game on a new system andyou cannot be right Mario games
out. Suffer sancia game it's abad game. Anyways, like Super
(21:10):
Mario 3d world like it's notthat great of a game but it's
still a very fun and Mario gameNo, I don't put at the top but I
really enjoy playing that gameand you've been a cat person. I
thought you would enjoyed itmore but
Red (21:26):
enjoyed it. It was fine
though. It was just fine. Like I
stack that like that came rightafter galaxy one. Yes. That was
the that was the bar it wasweighed against and to me it did
not even come close to clearingthat bar but go ahead Well
Hick (21:38):
yeah, the camera to like
that camera wasn't fully 3d like
it would take rise and stufflike how many Mario games have
you made Nintendo Why are youmaking a new Mark because you
rush it that's why because theWii U was selling like shit you
need a Mario game you rush itand you put some points with
only certain angles so justgetting more of a dog person so
(21:59):
that was me I was against it. Itwas okay but no to me It all
comes back to it's a still eventhough I think it's bad even
though I would rank it low inMario games. It's still a great
Mario game and overall is stilla great game so you give me that
game you enhance the graphics alittle bit and then you give me
like you know able to play itportable which you know, and I'm
(22:21):
always looking for games to pullout my Nintendo Switch as we
talked about high rewards I'mnot really that excited about
that's why it's been out for awhile I play one level now a lot
of that has to do with Xboxseries x but anyway I continue
on but no I mean and then youadd in browsers fury I remember
I was watching a review it wassomething like a trailer or
(22:43):
something on bounders fury I waslike you know what? That's
enough for me to buy it now likeI said I don't think this is a
super purchase I think this is adrone purchase
Red (22:54):
video game purchases at
this point in our life are
Hick (22:58):
encouraged but I will buy
because a fantastic 3d Mario
game on the switch like him hesays we every time we talk about
the switch I get disappointedlike you know yeah, it's
inferior obviously to next genbut the have the portability
aspect of a switch like there isstill something there but
they're just
Red (23:15):
the Nintendo first party
lineup is amazing. But yeah,
last year was a little bit ofthis a little off topic but last
year was a little bit of aletdown in terms of Nintendo
Switch game I'm hoping I'mhoping this this year really
delivers but I mean it's funnybecause we we talked about we
have bought a lot of remakesyeah our life I mean we've
talked rock Yeah, mostly drunk.
But I mean like when we got theWii U we bought Twilight
(23:39):
Princess HD when he when we gotour 3ds is what do we buy?
ochrony and time Majoris max.
Yeah, and let's be honest, weboth fucking bought Mario Kart
for the Wii U and the NintendoSwitch. Well, it's it's Mario
Kart Of course. Yeah,
Hick (23:52):
that was the exact same
game to man. We did a really
good job Nintendo
Red (23:58):
plus we probably paid for
the DLC on the Wii U then still
pay for the same damn thing.
Hick (24:03):
No ain't no it came with
the switch version I believe
that was the one yet
Red (24:07):
but not like it it really
is hit or miss like some games
obviously occurring and time toget on the 3ds before before the
switch was out. You know thatwas great to have that portable
and then a majority mask Ithought some of the quality of
life improvements alone made itworth the purchase even though
the boss change is fuckingsucked in my opinion. Yeah, but
then you know Twilight PrincessHD and WinWaker HD you know
(24:29):
again, two generations removedfrom from the GameCube version
of those games. I know a lot ofpeople probably played Twilight
Princess on the Wii. But hey, league is always left handed to
me not that right handed mirrorbullshit. Yeah, we but so And
plus, we're Zelda fans. Like Ifeel like we are horse for Zelda
we will buy games multiple timesas we have on virtual console
(24:51):
and 3ds and every other thingavailable. So it really is a
case by case instance if it's agame I feel is worth going out
and seeing Spending 40 5060bucks on the remake? Like I
said, Link's Awakening wasdefinitely one because the new
art style or even instanceswhere the game is a direct port,
but I didn't play the original.
Yes on the Wii U i. There's beenon the switch. I'm sorry, I
(25:13):
bought tropical Donkey KongCountry Tropical free Yes. And
toad treasure tracker, becauseI've never played them on the
Wii U. So for me that was worthmy money. Yeah, and they look
amazing on the switch, but justI don't know. blabbered I will
shut up. I
Hick (25:29):
mean, here's my thing
about me. I bought new Super
Mario Brothers use switchchampion a exclusive gold silver
edition Deluxe. Like I boughtthat game. So if I bought a game
was almost like, why would younot buy a 3d Mario game? But
anyways, one concept that wewent like getting added in a
remake is more text. Don't everadd more text to a game that's
already been made. And that kindof brought me to this like, you
(25:51):
know, topic of I'm playingcyberpunk right now. There's a
lot of text, I kind of want togo. I know you're enjoying
cyberpunk. I know you actuallylike reading more text than I
do. But I want to ask you, whenis like too much text become an
issue? Dude, you're
Red (26:06):
asking the wrong person
about text and video games.
Because, you know, I like toread a ton just in like in real
life outside of video games. Ilove reading novels, books,
stories, magazines, whatever.
Hick (26:17):
But you read a book to
read a book, like you're playing
a game to play a game. And whenyou're reading text, I don't
think you're necessarily playingthe game. But go ahead.
Red (26:25):
Okay, you're also talking
to the guy who's probably read
every single book in The ElderScrolls three Morrowind. And
yes, a lot of fucking books.
That is, to me, it's like, Ilove when text adds to the lore
of a game. And it makes sense, like, the way I look at it.
Games recently, or in the last, maybe 10 or 15 years have taken
two very different approaches tofill out their world. And these
(26:48):
are the only two approaches butthese are the first two that I
think of, I think of Bioshock.
The first person shooter fromyou know, I think was to K Games
back in the day that like youfound all these audio
recordings, audio recordings allthroughout the world. So you got
to listen to what happened. Yougot to listen to the character's
thoughts. Or you go The ElderScrolls route. And the way a lot
(27:10):
of RPGs have gone. I mean, goingback to the days when that's all
they could do was walls andwalls of text. Yeah. And I feel
like both methods are absolutelyacceptable. I love though, when
it's done to fill out the loreof the world, like I think and I
know cyberpunk is kind of what'sreally driving this, and we'll
get to that in a second. But Ireally think games, like the
(27:31):
Elder Scrolls that use books andnotes and everything else to
like, fill out the lore and thestory of the world. And like the
mythology and the history, likethat fascinates me. I love
getting into the history of gameworlds like that. And it's just
so to me, I am like, there'skeep though in text i plus the
(27:55):
biggest advantage and this istotally unrelated. I can sit
there and drink my beer. Yeah, really? Yes. So but you know,
kind of a cyberpunk, like yousaid, the, the text didn't
really fill out the world interms of lore. But it told you
like all these little encountersyou had, like you mentioned all
the shards, all the shards, andyes, some of them are lore and
(28:16):
history, or even fiction. But alot of them were filling out the
story of like, what happens whenyou got to a police dispatch or
a gig. And one of the things ispick up the piece of evidence
and it's almost always a shardthat tells you what is going on
there. So I really like the waysome games handle it. And just
(28:37):
growing up from playing RPGs andthings like that, where that's
all you had was walls of textbecause you didn't have voice
acting. You didn't have fullmotion videos like yeah, I'm
just used to it. And like Isaid, it lets me drink beer
while I'm reading but I dounderstand not everyone's a big
reader so I throw it to you totackle that side of the aisle. I
Hick (28:58):
disagree with everything
you just said Okay, first of all
the text messages in cyberpunk Idon't like text messages that
long in my real life. So I woulddefinitely not like them in the
game but to me Yeah, I'm not abig reader. I am different from
you on that like viewpointright? I had told you behind the
scenes that as I play more andmore games I am starting to read
(29:19):
more and more to get that lowerbut like I think what I'm
talking about here is not howmany times you had to read it's
how much you have to read like Idon't mind having that read a
lot but let's you know shore itup you can paraphrase this shit
you know I'm saying like there'sa lot you don't need a five
paragraph fucking text messageOkay, I don't need that my
(29:40):
fucking real life so why youneed a game is beyond me. And
then all the shards which Ihaven't read, but for some
reason I'm collecting them whileyou go around collecting
something that cuz it could bean achievement. You know,
Red (29:50):
I kept hoping to be an
achievement to I'm exactly.
Hick (29:54):
achievements and trophies.
I mean, yeah, I do like them,but I don't really care about
them a lot. But no, I'm justlike, I like to get to the game
I like to play the game in,right? Like, you know, yes, I do
agree with you, it does give yousome lore and I do actually
liked it. But like that whenit's in audio form now you can
talk about those audiorecordings. Now. Fuck that shit,
man. I don't like that shiteither. Audio is not reading,
like, I like the, the lore to bewithin the game within this
(30:19):
sector. Not not the fuckingsubtitles. But like the Lord to
be like no within the cutscenes, which is a bad example, because
most cutscenes have subtitles.
And in the game, I choose theoption subtype. So just like
(30:41):
shooting myself in the feet overhere about the argument that I'm
trying to make. Okay, I don'tlike text, but I end up using
it. And then I had the option touse it or not use it once. Like
I just said, I'm repeatingmyself, because that happens.
Sometimes I use it. So well.
Let's be
Red (30:56):
honest, you probably use
the subtitles on videos. Like
we've said earlier in thispodcast. You've got three kids
and a wife running around whoare probably making a lot of
racket. Yeah, it's hard to hearwhat sir not blaming your wife
for making a lot of racket. Kidswho make a lot of racket, she's
gonna come be my ass now. Butlike, so it makes having the
subtitles turned on. Veryvaluable when you have
(31:18):
distractions going on, in yourhousehold, in your apartment,
whatever interesting reallyquickly.
Hick (31:23):
The reason that keep the
subtitles on is because I don't
want to miss anything actually, like, yeah, there are some
distractions and stuff likethat. But the main reason is, I
don't want to miss anything. IfI listen to somebody talk, you
know, I might not be paying asmuch attention or whatever. I
like that in there. And also ifI get there's a word I don't
know how to spell, like let'ssay a character or a place, I
can see that text and know whereto look for on the ramp. So the
(31:45):
fear of missing out FOMO is whyI use subtitles. But go ahead.
So I
Red (31:50):
will say you mentioned
you'd rather get the law or
sometimes from from the videos, the cutscene. So we have two
extremes. You're talking aboutsomething like cyberpunk where
you have an absolute shit ton ofshards or the Elder Scrolls, we
have all the books. How aboutsomething like Metal Gear Solid,
where you have an hour longcutscenes in these games? I
mean, obviously these are twovery extreme examples on the
(32:14):
opposite sides of the spectrum.
But would you rather have novelsand novels and novels of books
or an hour long? cutscene? Imean, neither
Hick (32:23):
can we find a good medium
here. We have our cutscenes
because Death Stranding which isa game I really liked it low
only gave me like a six. Butthat's because of like other
issues in the game. They didhave very long cutscenes in I
did like them. But there is thatpoint where it's like, Okay,
come on. I'm playing a game, andI want to get back to the game.
So for me, it's kind of likethat middle point, like, you
(32:43):
know, yeah, I do like some text.
I do like some more, but lore, but um, we can't get to that
middle point right there whereit's like, you know, okay, for
people that like to read, there's something there. But for
people that don't like to read, there's not too much they're,
Red (32:58):
like, fear of missing out.
Yep.
Hick (33:00):
And there's like the same
way cutscenes like, yeah, give
us a cussing. That gives us acutscene that gives us a lot of
information. But at the sametime, don't make it too long.
We're gamers like me are likeOkay, come on, let's move on.
Because then you stop payingattention and then you're just
like, I don't care about thatscene anymore.
Red (33:17):
That's when I get drunk.
Playing video games if I'mwatching a 30 minute cutscene
I'm probably drinking three
Hick (33:25):
don't play desk training
then because you will get super
drunk during that game. everplayed Metal Gear saw game? I
think I play one for like alittle while but not too long.
So I really don't know aboutthose but the same guy made that
trainee so I can only imaginehow bad those games are but uh,
anyways, stay I don't know ifI'm on the right transit. I am
(33:45):
not on the right transition. SoI'm I'm staying with cyberpunk
Red (33:49):
staying with cyberpunk.
Yeah, good. Yeah.
Hick (33:52):
Thank you read Forgive me
there we go was like Oh fuck,
where's the transition? I wasgoing to but um, we talked about
fast traveling before but whenwe did that, we talked mostly
about horseback riding atSeaWorld. renea back I want to
bring it up in more modern orfuturistic games like you know
cyberpunk your grant that Otto'show do you go about fast
(34:14):
traveling in those games? Oh, I
Red (34:16):
don't. Oh my god in modern
world or futuristic games. I
will drive everywhere because itis a ton of fun to rip through
most of these video games citiesin a car especially like
cyberpunk. You're going 200kilometers per hour. Yeah, like
in these beautiful few and yeah,we've kind of talked about this
you know, kind of futuristic onthe inside classic on the
(34:38):
outside cars. Like it isabsolutely beautiful driving
through these cities and plus tome, the more you and this
applies not just to the modernand futuristic but like the more
you fast travel. I feel like theless you really get the game
world and that's especially truewhen you're in a city where so
much of it looks very similarbut I'm just fast traveling
(35:01):
around from every location. LikeI get so disoriented in a city,
because you're just like, I haveno spatial awareness for where
the hell I am. But mostly justdriving around a beautiful city
like cyberpunks nice city, likeyou get the neon, you get the
beautiful colors or evensomething like Grand Theft Auto,
where you get to transition fromslums to downtown to outside the
(35:25):
city suburbs like cyberpunk hasthat too, of course, like so for
me, if I'm playing a more modernor futuristic game, I'm driving
everywhere. Okay, it's a hell ofa lot faster than riding on a
horse. So
Hick (35:37):
yes, definitely,
definitely.
Red (35:39):
But then just you get to
see the sights you and even
though Yes, in most of thesecities, you can't go into 95% of
these buildings. It's stillbeautiful to see the world they
put together. Yeah, if you'rewalking on a horse, you know, it
might take you an hour to getsomewhere if you're driving 200
miles an hour or 200 kilometersper hour and one of these
awesome cars I can get from oneend of cyberpunks map to the
(36:01):
other in maybe 10 minutes. And I
Hick (36:05):
run that cyberpunk does
really great and making their
game compact. Yeah, nice. Itlooks absolutely huge. But like
you just said you can get fromone side of the map to the
other. I don't know the exacttiming of it. But if you have a
good car, you can get there veryfast. Now GTA five, that was a
little bit different storydifferent story. One time I
circled all the way around GTAfive it took me 20 minutes. But
(36:26):
you know, that was circlingaround. It wasn't going from
point A to point B so ittechnically would take around 10
minutes, but I'm just Yeah, theprocess of night the night said
we're the Night City. And alsoprops to cyberpunk for making a
game that was compact, but therewas still so much in it. And
they really, you know, we'veheard bash on cyberpunk by a
(36:46):
woman I've gotten into the gamea lot lately. And even with
issues it's a very fun game aswe're talking about right now.
You really don't have to fasttravel that much because you can
get from point A to point B onopposite sides of the map and
you can do it very quickly. Andalso why the fuck would you want
to fast travel in that game? Wegot stopped by these little
fucking stations to like get yougot stopped by station. You
(37:09):
gotta gather car you got hit butjust a fast travel somewhere
cyberpunk when CD Projekt RED,why can't I just fast travel?
Why do I have to go a certainpoint to fast travel? That's
bullshit. And even though I'mnot fast traveling in the game,
I don't like it at all. But youknow, well, yeah, actually. What
are your opinions on thosestations? Have you used one?
Yeah, I think it's against.
Red (37:29):
Again, I only use them. And
we've mentioned this, not just
today, but in prior episodes.
Like I've tweeted about it maybefast traveled using those
stations like three times theentire game.
Hick (37:39):
I didn't want to try it.
That's the only reason,
Red (37:42):
right because there's just
no reason when you can like Like
you said, cyberpunk makes theworld look huge. And once you
get out in the Badlands, it isit does actually open up Yes,
but it is still like you can getfrom point A to point B because
you have amazingly fast cars.
They have interstates where youdon't have to worry about
stoplights and intersectionslike it is a very well because
you worry about stoplights whenyou're playing cyberpunk. not
(38:03):
usually not usually but I trynot to run over too many
civilians and get through
Hick (38:08):
I was a gamer that stopped
at stoplight every single stop
like they get rid of cyberpunk Iwant to see that game.
Red (38:15):
I will say the one thing we
haven't even mentioned that we
get in the modern or futuristicworlds that you don't get in
like fantasy or historicalsettings. The soundtracks the
car radio, oh my God ever sincewas a Grand Theft Auto three and
Vice City yet started licensingreal music, especially by city
and you got that 80s like 80spop that was Yes. Set that world
(38:40):
so well. And cyberpunk gives you1012 radio channels as well. And
not all of it's my kind ofmusic. It's a lot of that
trancey house music stuff thathey, yeah, if you love it great
for you. It fits the setting, not necessarily my genre, but
you get a rock channel, you geta hip hop channel, like there
are other varieties in there. Soto me, getting the music in the
(39:01):
car really helps break up thosedrives, even when they are a
little bit, you know, sevenminutes instead of four minutes,
you know, you get to listen. Andthen you get like the radio
hosts and the news guys that popin every now and like tell you a
little bit about what's goingon. So to me having that car
radio is a really cool touchthat you get in the modern and
(39:22):
futuristic games that we don'thave in the historical games
unless it's dandelion. The Bardplane is loot.
Hick (39:29):
I gotta get
Red (39:31):
the soundtrack stuff.
Hick (39:32):
Oh, in cyberpunk,
definitely man that's about was
ready to go. Like theyabsolutely know the soundtrack.
Like they had a lot of goodradio stations, the radio
stations, they sometimes fit thecity. Like I love Pacific
dreams. It's not like thetechnical, the techno music
you're talking about. It's kindof more like a synth wave music,
which I really like. But here'slike one thing that I love about
their soundtrack is they're notplaying pop, like really, really
(39:55):
popular songs. Like they'replaying more like you know, I
wanna see undergroundnecessarily, but a lot of songs
are from people cuz I've lookedthis up different people on
there even heard of. So a roughday like, you know, like there's
a lot of great songs that arestill like, you know, not
mainstream. And I love that theywent and found those games or
those songs, because that showsyou how much time they put into
(40:16):
the game because you can't justgo out and find a song, you
gotta find a song that fits yourgame. And yeah, there is access
to more music out there. But atthe same time, it's saturated.
And it's hard to shuffle throughall of the music. So for them to
go through to find thesesoundtracks that to me just
absolutely nailed Night City, for them not to be popular
(40:38):
artists that might becomepopular artists, because their
song is on cyberpunk, just anoverall very big fan that and
like just people get that
Red (40:47):
soundtrack. And they see
those artists and I will say, if
you watch the Indian credit, andyou actually sit through all the
Indian credits, they give thecredits for every single song on
every single credit the creditslast every bit of 30 minutes,
probably, but they give thecredit shout out to everyone. So
I was scanning those a lookingfor artists that I knew and
recognized and there are a fewon there. But just seeing like,
(41:10):
three or four artists did a tonof tracks sport, and it makes me
want to go out and look into alittle bit of music. But you
know, kind of stick in there.
We're talking cyberpunk, we'retalking futuristic games and
everything you're saying withthat futuristic concept. And
this is something you brought upto me Just recently, you know,
is this voice assistant with ournext gen consoles because you
texted me and said, You managedto get your Alexa hooked up to
(41:33):
where you could get your Xbox toplay whatever you want with
voice commands. First of allmind fucking blown. That's
awesome. I do not know that wasa thing. Tell me a little bit
about that.
Hick (41:45):
Well, first of all, it
doesn't do everything. Sadly, I
can't tell you that it will notbe caught. You know, I've tried
many times. Recently, like I waswatching one of those YouTube
videos where it's like seventips and tips, tips and tricks,
like yeah, series x. I was like,Okay, I'll check this out. See
what they have in the first two.
guy was the first I can'tremember the first one. But the
(42:07):
second one was the set up voiceassistant. And I was like, Okay,
I got definitely check this out.
So like, you know, I got lots ofdevices over the house as I know
now because we had to scratchsome of our intros because I
said Alexa, and it turned onwhich you all know, now that
shits been unplugged. That's whyit's not coming on. Lesson
learned. It's just somethinglike I have a lot. Like I said,
(42:28):
I have a lot of little Alexadevices. So it's definitely
something I want to check outand see what it can do. It's all
hooked it up recently. I waslike, okay, Xbox launched this
game and just doing it handsfree, man like not that it's so
much. It's a little bit faster.
But it's not a ton faster. Butjust to say Xbox do this and do
that was very cool. And I wasactually playing Assassin's
(42:48):
Creed Valhalla as an Xbox openup cyberpunk. And bam, it
switched right to the game. Soif you have not checked this
out, I'm guessing I don't have aPlayStation five. But I'm
guessing the PlayStation fivealso has Alexa and Google
Assistant. Those seem to be thetwo major ones right there. But
um, yeah, if you not check thisout, look into it. Most of these
devices, you all have Alexa andGoogle. And if you don't have
(43:11):
them, they're very, very cheap.
You can get an Alexa dot, it'susually goes for 50 you can
usually get on sale for like 30or 40. You might
Red (43:22):
even appreciate Alexa, like
since two houses ago.
Hick (43:25):
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's
awesome. So if y'all have an
Alexa device or a Google device, look into this. It's very cool.
You can search a list ofcommands and just hands free
makes everything so much easierand so much smoother. I think
with next gen that's what we'retrying to really get to is
making everything smooth andstuff. You
Red (43:42):
know, Microsoft was ahead
of the curve with the Kinect,
they just couldn't Yes, it didvery well.
Hick (43:47):
Yeah, they say like you
know if you don't have to
connect to us, Alexa or Google,so I don't know if this was on
last gen the Xbox One ps4, notit might have been or there
might have been, there mighthave been an upgrade where he
got this but I'm just wanted tomake a quick plug. If y'all
haven't yet. Go check that out.
It's very cool. And I don't knowhow much I'll use it because,
well, here's what one do my TV.
(44:11):
I'm getting confused with my TV,because I can't control with
Alexa devices. But then there'salso Alexa on the TV. I think
it's clashing Somehow, I used tobe able to turn my TV on using
my Alexa Echo, but it's notworking anymore. So I want to
get to the point where I can sayAlexa turn on Xbox. It turns on
the Xbox, it turns on the TV. Iknow I can get there. I'm just
(44:33):
not there yet. Now. The XboxYouTube is your friend. I will
figure it out sometime but a redthat's kind of you know, kind of
guess you want to say anythingelse on that. Now.
Red (44:46):
I'd like to experiment
around with some time but I
haven't had the chance to Inever had my
Hick (44:50):
device yet Google or Alexa
Red (44:52):
now probably to Google Home
or Google wherever.
Hick (44:56):
This is where you pissed
me off. They're not that
expensive. Okay. Why don't youcome To 20 2021 and buy you a
voice assistant device, and Idon't even
Red (45:05):
have a universal
Hick (45:07):
1970s if you want to.
Red (45:10):
Anyway, I think we're,
we're just about done with this
episode for once we might endclose to on time but so we're
gonna go ahead and wrap up hereall actually first episode we
got talking about yes episode.
We don't want to keep doing thiswhere we alternate from game to
topics to game to topics. So wedon't want to have a pattern.
Right, right, because that justgets too predictable and we
don't like to be that. So nextweek, we're gonna keep talking
(45:31):
about the industry and keepgoing. Keep talking about what's
going on. You're good with that.
Yep, definitely. Alright, sowe'll go and wrap this up, then
all the links we're going totalk about are down in the
description, you can support uson Patreon or PayPal, you don't
have to and if you don't want topay to support us we absolutely
understand. But definitely leaveus a five star rating on
whatever platform you listen tous on. leave us a review. Even
(45:54):
if you don't think we're worthfive stars give us five stars.
Anyway, we've got two websitesout there where we sell a lot of
awesome gaming merchandise. Wegot t gpz gaming.com and two
guys playing zelda.com.
Obviously one's gaming oriented, one Zelda oriented. Those are
affiliate shops, so we may earna little bit of a commission on
any sales there. But definitelycheck them out. Now Hick How
about you tell them about wherewe are on social media and
(46:15):
YouTube?
Hick (46:17):
We got two YouTube
channels, two guys playing
Zelda. That's how we startedalmost 11,000 subscribers do too
much with it nowadays. But wehave a ton of videos on there
ton of rankings walkthroughscommentary, so definitely check
that out. We also have a YouTubechannel for tg PC gaming, mostly
just put our podcasts on thereand some other videos without
commentary, but it's mostly justpodcasts. not as big but you can
(46:39):
also check that out. We have aDiscord server, so definitely go
hit the link in that. We have aton of fun there we talk
everything. Yeah, the tendo,PlayStation, Xbox PC. And then
we also talk about some otherstuff. It's just a ton of fun
and you want to talk to us. Youwant to interact with us. Yeah,
you can hit us up on socialmedia, but definitely go join
(47:02):
our Discord server and thentalking about social media. You
can catch us on Twitter, you cancatch us on Instagram at Busted
Buttons PC, but man, justanother fun episode. Like we
both had kind of a rough week indifferent ways. Like I've been
doing some remodeling andworking. You've been doing a lot
of working so as always, it's sonice to get away. You talk a
(47:22):
little gamey. But anyways, wewill see you all on a next
episode.
