(00:45):
Hi everyone, my name is RoseWabich and I'm your host of Chat
Off the Mat.
This is a very tiny solo castthat I wanted to share with you.
About a week ago, I celebrateda milestone.
Actually, it was two yearssince I quit alcohol, and
although a year ago, I wanted tomake this same solo cast to
share with you that milestone ofa year, I decided to wait
Because you never know whatmilestone of a year.
I decided to wait because younever know what happens after a
(01:06):
year, but I was really certainthat I would be talking to you
today, two years after quittingalcohol.
My journey of a relationshipwith alcohol started a very long
time ago, when I was younger, and the reason why I started
drinking is because I wanted tofit in Now.
Many of you may have felt thesame way in the past about other
(01:29):
things, about fitting in, peerpressure and all those things
that make us want to be a partof a group and just make us do
stupid things.
So fast forward.
Many, many years later, I triedquitting several times Now I
just felt that alcohol wasn'treally doing it for me anymore,
(01:51):
doing anything for me at all.
It was lovely being connectedwith other people in social
gatherings, having a drink in myhand and having a good time,
but eventually I realized thatit wasn't all a good time.
But eventually I realized thatit wasn't all a good time.
I started to recognize that Iwould wake up in the middle of
the night with that naggingvoice in my head saying Rose,
(02:14):
why are you doing this toyourself?
Why are you drinking at all?
You really don't need to.
I had breast cancer 13 years agoand I should have stopped then.
I should have stopped many, many years ago because, well,
both of my parents died fromcancer as well.
My dad specifically died from acancer related to alcohol and
(02:38):
smoking.
And, yes, I did smoke a longtime ago and I successfully quit
that, but I didn't realize thator didn't really give much
thought to drinking, untilseveral years ago, around COVID
time, when many people decidedto drink more because, well,
what else did they have to dowhen they were home and it was
(03:00):
summertime?
I decided to go on a hiatus.
I came across a I guess it was aprogram or a website or videos
with Annie Grace of This NakedMind, and it was actually called
a 30-day experiment at the time.
(03:21):
So I decided, why not?
It was free.
She gave us very small, sizablevideos to watch that were
informative, not like AlcoholicsAnonymous, which I've never
been to, but I've heard thatthose groups are mostly about
(03:42):
sharing where these videos wereabout what does alcohol do to
you?
What does it do to your brain?
So a very science-backedprogram.
And at the time, during COVID, Iactually stopped drinking, for
(04:02):
I think it was about threemonths, thought I could go back
and moderate.
You know I really loved my wine.
My husband and I collect winefrom our various trips to Napa
and Sonoma, so I really enjoyedwine with my meals.
And during COVID I actuallystopped everything.
(04:24):
But then again, like I said, Ithought I couldn't go back and
moderate and it didn't work out.
Moderation really doesn't workout Really.
After that first drink, you areright back where you are at the
beginning, because what alcoholdoes to you is it basically
sucks you in.
After that first drink, nowmaybe some people can stop.
(04:46):
Maybe some people need to havea few before they stop, but for
me, well, I decided a few yearslater that I really wanted to
stop totally.
What I did is well one.
I prayed a lot and I asked myarchangels, specifically
Archangel Raphael and ArchangelMichael.
(05:08):
Raphael is a healing archangelthat I often use for Reiki and
Archangel Michael is someone whoprotects us.
So I called both of them in andalso other guides and divine
energy to help me, and you don'tget the help unless you ask for
(05:30):
it from these higher spirits orguides, so I call them in as
well as do Reiki on myself allthe time, and I am a Reiki
master and have go-to energysystem of healing that I've used
(05:53):
for many years and decided toheal myself and to work on the
intention of not drinkinganymore.
At the same time, I was goingthrough a course, a Qigong
course, with my , J ohn Munro,of Long White Cloud Qigong.
It was my third course orcertification, and within this
(06:15):
course, we did a very specificseries of exercises in what he
calls the Wuji practice.
Now, this Wuji practice isabout resetting our energy
system, sort of like when youturn off your computer to
restart it because, well, it'sjust kind of wacky, and then
(06:36):
when you turn it back on, itresets.
Well, these series of Qigongmovements did the same thing for
us.
For me, one specific movement, which was a toroidal movement,
basically helped move this verystagnant and deep-rooted energy
(06:57):
out of my body.
It unearthed or made unstuckcertain habits that I had,
specifically the drinking ofalcohol.
And while I did this movement,I set that intention that I was
removing the habit, so removingthe habit of drinking.
(07:18):
As I'm doing this energy workcontinuously, continuously,
continuously.
Eventually I stopped drinkingNow.
So I stopped drinking Now.
I also, at the same time, decided to jump the August 2023
path.
They call a year a path andeach cohort is a group for that
(07:40):
time frame but I stoppeddrinking actually several weeks
(08:07):
before the program even started.
Now she calls this spontaneousstopping or stopping of drinking
alcohol, but for me it reallywasn't spontaneous.
I was working at it for quitesome time, through my Chagat,
through my Reiki, through myprayers, through the intention
that I had to stop drinkingBecause, for me, I didn't want
(08:28):
it anymore.
It wasn't helping me physicallyand emotionally, but what was
keeping me stuck in the drinkingcycle were the triggers when,
okay, it's five o'clock, I amnow cooking dinner, so I'm going
to have a glass of wine or amartini, or people are coming
over so, yes, let's have a drinkbefore they even get here.
(08:51):
Or it's Thursday night afterwork, let me have a drink to
relax.
Now, I'm sure a lot of thosetriggers or a lot of those
things or scenarios are familiarto you as well, because they
become of our routine.
Once you overcome those triggers, it gets easier.
(09:15):
It takes work.
It wasn't just that easy.
Yes, I stopped drinkingspontaneously, so to speak, but
I continued with learning thematerial, learning the
information, learning about thetriggers and what alcohol does
to the brain, to the body, andalso being in a community of
(09:40):
other people who were strugglingto stop, many of whom couldn't
because it was so ingrained inthem.
And when we suffer in some way, emotionally and even physically
, we hold on to something thatwe feel helps us, and maybe for
(10:00):
many years.
Maybe that's what I had as well.
Maybe that was a subconscioustrigger for me that I let go
eventually after doing all ofthe work on myself.
But I continue to do the work.
I continue to overcome some ofthose triggers.
(10:21):
It got easier, and it goteasier until a point where I
don't miss it at all, miss it atall.
Now, the hardest thing for me, Ithink, was being with other
people in a social gathering, myfriends specifically, and
(10:42):
wondering what they thought ofme, because, well, I wasn't
drinking.
Were they going to question me?
Were they going to judge me?
Were they going to still be myfriends?
And when I owned the fact thatI wasn't drinking, when they
said, well, do you want to drink?
I'm like, no, I'm not drinkinganymore.
Oh, well, you know, they wouldsay, well, I don't drink that
(11:04):
much either.
Well, and I would say, well,it's okay, you can drink as much
as you'd like, I just don'twant to drink anymore, I choose
not to.
And, as Annie Grace says, I canchoose to have a drink anytime,
I just choose not to have one.
So after a while, they didn'tcare and I felt okay, I felt
(11:28):
great about my choices, I ownedmy choices and I just marched on
into continuous.
You know being alcohol free.
So you know there's a lot ofmaterial out there now.
More and more people are writingabout overcoming our habits.
It's not just drinking.
It could be anything.
It could be nail biting, itcould be, you know, anything
(11:51):
that you do consistently in yourlife that maybe you lost
interest but it's really hard tobreak.
Smoking is one of them.
There could be other thingsthat you do, even shopping or
gambling.
Those are all addictivebehaviors that you know we
easily get become a part of ourroutine.
But I wanted to share this.
(12:12):
It's a long road or it could bea challenge to stop, but you
can do it If you have thatdesire.
There are resources out there, just like the ones that I
mentioned.
(12:33):
Well, annie Grace, this NakedMind being one of them.
A physical practice that you dowith the intention of
specifically maybe breakinghabits.
Journaling was huge for me Iwould journal about.
Well, first I startedjournaling about why I really
didn't want to drink anymore andhow I felt every night and that
(12:56):
voice inside my head that keptbeating me up over and over, and
I was finally tired of thatstupid silly voice constantly
berating me.
And just my spiritual practice,my Reiki, and that helped
really center me and guide me aswell.
So, yeah, you know you'restrong.
(13:20):
You're strong, you can do it Ifyou so choose to.
You may not choose to, andthat's okay too, but I hope that
maybe I said something in thisepisode that inspires you maybe
to try or to seek out resourcesfor yourself.
(13:44):
Maybe have a think about it.
You know you don't have to jumpon something right away.
You can think about how itmakes you feel, whatever that is
for you.
So I just want to say I reallyappreciate that you're listening
to my personal story.
I really don't share a lot of mypersonal stories on my podcast.
(14:05):
I usually have a platform forothers, but sharing my personal
story is really healing for meand I'm here if you have any
questions, if you want to talkabout it, if you need a distant
Reiki session or even talk aboutQigong practices that you can
(14:28):
begin even without the intentionof stopping a habit, just to
even feel good and reset yourenergy, reach out to me.
You can reach me on my websiteor social media.
Drop me a note.
I am more than happy to speakto you, because that's what I'm
