(00:00):
An old, oldwooden ship slowly approaches
the shores of the New World.
On board,
a man eagerly awaits landfallso he can be reunited
with his wife, daughterand grandchild.
After a few false startslanding on the island,
this morning
he climbs into a landing vesselto make way to the colony.
(00:21):
He had seen smoke plumesfor a few days from the island,
and when he standson the sands of the beach,
he finds fresh tracks, but nobody greets him.
He and his crew mates had spentthe night singing loudly
to draw the attentionof the colony.
And only now does it really sinkin that something is wrong.
He can hear nothing but the wind
as he walks upto the side of the colony,
(00:43):
and as he enters the fortifiedgates of the settlement, he
can't see a soul.
As he makes his way inside.
He finds a fence post witha single word carved into it.
Croatoan.
This week on Cheeky Tales,we delve into the unclear waters
that are the story of the lostcolony of Roanoke.
(01:13):
Oh, so it's avatar.
It's Pocahontas, but,
you know, he always jokesthat Avatar's Pocahontas.
Yeah, yeah, but what's the what?Well, this is Pocahontas.
What's Roanokegot to do with Pocahontas?
I don't know,I just thought I'd learned
marker projectiles.
We're back.
He's back.
You did it.
Recorded all the cameras. Right?
Well, now's as gooda time as any to check.
(01:35):
Wheel of Fortune.
I'm back.
He's back.
My boy.
We're turning into a HarryPotter podcast.
Yeah,

As I've always said,it's always fun
recording the second episode.
I've got nothing to talk about.
You. Hello? Hi.
You weren't herefor the first episode.
(01:55):
Tell him. He's back. He's back?
Yeah.
Was it fun?
You wantto say that into the microphone?
Okay,so now I'll tell you for some.
She said she was at a friend'shigh priest.

Not me.
(02:17):
Oh, well, how about the first.
Two weeks of the NFL, Oh.
Man, I can't believe the Bucswon two games and then lost one.
Bay Buccaneers won all of they.
Won all their games.
Lost all they gained.
Won 1 or 2 games.
I don't need to do thatfor the Bengals. Man.
I want to come on.
(02:38):
Who dey day?
Garbage
man. I cannot I cannot believeLamar Jackson is currently
looking good as quarterbackin fantasy right now.
Do we think that by the timethis episode releases,
Aaron Rodgers has to
bow out?
He probably doesn'thave two working Achilles now.
(02:59):
One is probably robotic.
Yeah, that man has spentmore time in rehab for Aaron.
It's been another two weeks.
You want to give usanother pick up?
Look, there's.
Every chance that on the release
date of this episode,I'm not using the new PC.
There's a high chance.
There's every chance. Oh, man.
I still have to boot the thing.
This is.This still might be issues.
(03:21):
And how many videos haveI sent you of PCs
booting for the first timethat just catch on fire.
Only six.
Every day I get one of my boot.
That one's going to. Go an hour.Yeah.
Yeah, there's every chance.
Look, I'm speaking from the pasthere, but it's a good chance
I still haven'tgot that thing running.
On the other note,
(03:41):
though, he's added another pieceI used to actually use for.
This one's a micro pieces.
It's just for running the sim.
He doeswant to build a micro to.
Build a micro tower.
Yeah.
Look, I've had enough.
All right.
I'll have had my fillonce this new one is running.
Okay.
That's enough.
(04:02):
Let's move on the game, boys.
Yeah. Well, that is somethingI'm doing at the same time.
Yeah, we've.
Yeah, evenI've got a few in the works.
I got to stop paying him,and I did ask him to help me.
Result of the key battery?
Yeah, in my car.
Oh, yeah.
Do you want to talk about thisnonsense?
I learned this when he told meabout the other day.
His key battery is solderedto the the board of the key.
(04:25):
Do you know why?Because it's in a sealed unit.
Becauseit charges from the ignition.
Yeah.
You can just takethe battery out and replace it.
This is.
That would be nice.
I did get a quote from BMW.
The quote was $400 from UK.
It's so un German.
It's so un German to designsomething so nice.
You would never.
(04:45):
Talk about overengineerednonsense.
Would you sayit was very British?
No, because this is a BMW.
Mini mini circuit.
Wouldn't you know that? What are you doing?
It's BMW,but it's still British.
No, it's. No it's not.
That's the RoyalEnfield's. British.
The engine wasis a tri tech engine
because it was designedby British.
Yeah. Where's the key from?
(05:06):
And Brazilian engineerin Germany.
This okay.
This bit isn't going to flywith us. It's not going to fly.
He's just happy he's able to
latch on somethingthat's not PC related.
Yeah, I know. It's I sure am.
It's like three episodesin a row.
We've talked about this crap.
You know what's not Australian
made his PCbecause he hasn't made a.
It is very annoying, but my keys are sealed unit.
(05:29):
And to replace the batterywe're going
to have to cut the plastic, restore the battery
and potentially superglueit back together.
Yeah. How dumb.
How dumb?
Well, what are you?
It's eitherthat or $400 from UK.
I preferred the black and goldMini Coopers.
Very much.
Chalky cups are better.
(05:50):
And where?
Back didn't cut nothing.
Didn't cut nothing.
Anyway,
Mark French, a lot of things.
We watched a fascinating videoin there with the intermittent.
We did.
I'm glad you guys liked it.
The history of wine Nile. Yeah.
Why is shaped like is.Why is the check that way.
(06:11):
Gets out that way?
It was alsothe history of Paris.
That was built.
Yeah. Not not at history, I say.
But what do you guys know aboutRoanoke?
It's mentioned everything wrong.
It was.
I think it's part of one of theAmerican Horror Story seasons.
Yeah. It's also the first onethat Lady Gaga was in.
It's also still a place. Yeah.
(06:32):
The new island.
Yeah. What a new name.
I have listened to anotherepisode that covers the story,
so read where?
Right. Rest in peace, Fred Webb.
That's still going.That's still. Going.
Let's watch the under the teeth.
BuzzFeed unsolved R.I.P..
So yeah. Sothose guys are still going.
I have heard this story before.
Will be good to have my memoryrefreshed.
I mean, I haven'theard the story before.
(06:54):
Well, buckle up, buckaroo.
Get ready to sail for a monthand a half.
England are at it again.
Let's just pretendthat the memory
of the information I haveis just disappeared.
And you can tell me afresh.
Much like the people of Roanoke.
Good one.Thank you. Good one. Long bow.
(07:15):
It flew true, though.
England around.
It again.
Scotland.
Just based on the interaction.
You should be able to work out
that this is Englanddoing what they did best.
Colonization.
Let's get into some old boats.
Old. Old wooden ships.
Wooden ships.
Colonizationis what I was going for.
It starts with an Italianworking for the French, though,
(07:38):
as the areathat would come to include
RoanokeIsland was first explored by.
Giovanni de.
Verrazzano in 1524.
What was the episode we didwhere our bank was selling
plots of land to the settlementthat didn't exist? Oh.
That was it was my one. Yeah.
I had a funny name if I could.
Yeah, it was nothing. They couldn't farm.
(08:00):
It was shit land. Yeah. What was his name?
And her name?
How do we never remember any
episode we've ever donewhen it's relevant?
I don't know. I'm sorry.
I'll just. Name.
The con man the greatest.
The greatest con man on.
So many. Con. We did.
We've done two back to back.
It's been more than twounintentionally.
(08:21):
Back to back.
We did the guys on the awfultail twice.
I get a pirate episodeand you're doing.
Yeah and tentacles and. Yeah.So we've done three.
And then Timothythat the seven the.
He wasn't a con man.He was just an idiot. Yeah.
But he basically. Seven.
Yeah he.
No because he wasn'tintending to be that.
He was just dumb.
(08:42):
Anyone lucky.
Soft for.
I give you a soft for.
It's a soft.It's a hard three but soft full.
What would come to beknown today is the Outer Banks,
a series of islandsoff the coast of North Carolina.
Carolina would be explored
and misinterpretedas a quick way to get to China.
(09:02):
That's.
That was a riff on theI say his name.
So I was like,
that's what I. Thought it was.
But I'm like,that didn't sound right.
There we go.
Yeah. Show good.
Start with my missus.
Good.
A TV show I want to watch again.
Randomly. Yes.
Because it's being slammeddown your throat by Netflix
(09:24):
every time you open itat the moment.
Oh, no, it'sgetting slammed in my throat
by my Instagram Reels. For some reason.
It's his Instagram Reels.Like he doesn't use TikTok.
Yeah, it's TikTok I'm watching.
Contact TikTok's attorneys, work on the defense works.
I'm watching Luciferand the rookie cop up.
What? Yeah, that.
Yeah, we're going backthrough the rookie now.
I just went through the latestseason.
(09:46):
Oh, sorry.
I went back through Rick andMorty, and I am currently going.
Through whatthey were watching the.
Latest season of Archer.
Oh, not Archer.
I went throughand watched a couple of
episodes from like, seasonfour and five of Rick and Morty.
It's like a good episode to wait
and watchthe Voltron episode again.
I swear there was like five
years therewhere every second conversation
(10:08):
I was like,oh my god, dude, watch Archer.
You would totally like Archer.
It was actuallyin my Instagram bio
for a substantial period of timeand said, coffee fanatic.
And no, I don't watch out,I watch.
I first watched Archerwhen I was apocalyptically drunk
one night, of course,and I didn't think I remember
thinkingthis show was hilarious,
(10:28):
didn't think about likeI couldn't
remember what it was called forlike four years.
And then someone introduced meto Australian,
oh my god, this is the show.
And ever since I've loved it.
Anyway, maybe I need to watch it.
Yeah,absolutely. Should. Roanoke.
So back to Roanoke.
So the Outer Banks, a seriesof islands off the coast.
North Carolina.
Said we had nothing to talkabout in the second episode, to.
(10:48):
Misinterpret it. Exactly.
As a quick wayto get to China. Yes.
All. Matt Giovanni,
he thought,
oh, this is the waythat we get across to China
when you get the Silk Roadhappening again.
So this is another oneof the special passes to get to.
Yeah. Before quicker.
Well China they wanted to.
So the Silk Road had fallenapart with the Turkish empire
I'm sorry the Ottoman Empire.
(11:10):
So they were like
how about we instead ofgoing that way, we go that way.
And that's how they discoveredAmerica.
I went, yeah, where were they going for the.
The Oregon trial, I.
Think you the Oregon trial.
Donna party. Yeah.
They're going to Californiaabout that.
Yeah, the other way.So it's like 300 years later.
But it's continuation of that,right? Isn't it?
Not really. No other way.
(11:32):
So Giovanni would.
Carolina faced East.
Yeah. Carolinason the East coast.
Yeah okay.
Now what makes it a so when you.
Did used to.
So. Orange County, Carolina.
Giovanni would report this backto king of France,
to the king of Franceand the King of England,
both of whom would immediatelyforget about it
(11:52):
and ignore requestto investigate.
This. Sounds familiar.
54 years later, though, QueenElizabeth the First, not
the recent one, would offer SirHumphrey Gilbert the chance.
To. Explore
and colonize the territorynorth of Spanish Florida.
But why did you have to cough?Cough?
Clarify that just in case.
(12:13):
There's only been to exactly.
And I don'tthink Queen Elizabeth the Second
with the 70 years of reign, was around in 1578.
That's right.
But I just wanted to beabsolutely sure.
So Humphrey Gilbert
would go onto explore the coast, eventually
claiming the territory
of Saint John's in Newfoundland,California.
Sorry, Canada, damn it.
(12:33):
In 1583,before he unceremoniously
died, lost at sea on the wayhome.
After this, after his death, his charter of exploration
and colonization would passto his brother Adrian Gilbert
and half brother, SirWalter Riley.
They would split the landat Newfoundland, with Riley
(12:54):
gaining the rights to the area
previously exploredby an Italian mate,
and had a and he decided that,he would push ahead
with continually with continuingexploration of the area
as part of the
charter to Riley station,he had to establish a colony.
By 1891,
he would get to work on sendinga fleet to stake their claim.
(13:16):
His claim.
So he got essentially this blokeright
in the river in the,in the ocean on the way back
north of Newfoundland, which is in Canada.
Went to this other bloke.
So he was going to explore
the northwest, pastthe northwest, past pass.
And then our mateRiley got everything south.
So basically all of the NorthAmerican coastline,
(13:38):
or the US coastlineas we know it. Yeah.
When you say like northwest, you're talking like Alaska,
right? Turn towards.
That's the waythey're trying to go. Yeah.
So the Northwest Passagewas the idea of can we get over
Canada and get into the Pacificand then to Asia.
Yeah.
Which they did eventually do.
But itwas like the 1900s. Anyway,
(14:00):
despitehis need to organize a colony,
it turns out that Riley wasthe Queen's special little boy.
Not like that.
She just thought he dressed
well, had a strong witand bold tongue.
But at
and so he wasn'tallowed to leave London.
So he had this charterto like explore the US.
(14:23):
Wasn't allowed to leave.
Not allowed to leave.
He would need to put togethera crew.
And by April 1584.
Montage thereI watched that episode.
I'm in.
That was one of the episodesI watched.
As soon as he giggledI was like, yeah, I nailed it.
And by April 1584,an expedition would begin
to explore the area.
(14:44):
This expedition would go well, eventually landing in the area
of the Outer Banks in July.
The native tribeswould make contact quickly
and proved to be friendlyand helpful.
Oh, that's a change.
Yeah, very unusual for NorthAmerican exploration.
I was fighting for
the bad stuff to happen.
But we get there.
We get there.
When the expedition returned, they would bring with them two
(15:07):
natives, a man named,a man named one Chessie,
and another name, called Manteo,
who happened to bethe son of the chieftain
of Croatoan Island.
I saw that one show.
One chess, I don't know. No.
He was. You want the.
That'swhy you weren't corrected.
He you want. I want.
Queen lizard would be happyto hear of the Bountiful land
(15:29):
and helpful locals and wouldproclaim the land Virginia.
I think
I think he meant Queen Lizzie, but he said Queen Elizabeth.
That's actuallywhat's written in my script.
We need that. On. Pleaseplace it.
Absolutely. You know what?
Okay. It's in there.
It's in there.
I did it on purpose.
So my script.
Queen lizard people, the the lizard plays.
(15:52):
Short for Elizabeth, not lizard.
Sure.
Anyway, she'd be happyto hear about the Bountiful land
and helpful locals and wouldproclaim proclaimed the land
Virginia and name Riley KnightLord and governor of Virginia.
Even though he did nothing,he would immediately
start to court investorsfor a new colony on the land.
(16:14):
He organized the crew.
What do you mean?He did nothing?
Okay.
He's like, hey,go over there and look at that.
He did this son of a bitch.Yeah.
Then he just hung out in Londoneating like
Marmite.
Okay.
Well, that's likethe only thing that I.
Yorkshire pudding.
There you go.
Bangers and bags of tea.
(16:36):
Now what did you drink?
Coffee.
Hey. He drink tea.
Wrong.
Let's take everybody
get. Stuck with your teeth.
Your teeth wrong.
What.
Not chewing gum.
What do you do with the stringfish with.
It's like this.
You deserve a back. Our own.
(16:57):
Yeah, yeah.
To Becky, don't.
Like to go?
I know it soundshave you should.
Have you heard what you.
I mean I've got a podcast.You know what?
The podcast is short.Do you know what? The podcast.
Have a guest.
Brilliant.
Have a guesswhat the podcast is called?
It's a bit on that thing. All right. It's actually good.
(17:20):
John and I both loved it.
Is it a pun? Yes.
Just just tell me.
It's called talk tour.
Noise. So cool. Oh.
Oh, good.
Edit. Sean.
So good. Oh, no, don't end me.
All right. I'm good.
I thought it was very, very clever.
That gave me syphilis.
(17:46):
It's too late at night for this.
Okay.
The first colony doesn'tend well.
When did they ever.
So. Yeah, the Roanoke colonywasn't exactly the first one
in the area.
After the returnof the first expedition,
Rileywould immediately land a colony.
What?
What?
Oh, he's laughingat me, yawning.
(18:08):
Oh, it's not funny.
It's not funny, guys.
No! Castle, were you looking at me?
I must have hit mine
way better than you did, because I was you.
One to get the same time.
Okay.
After the returnof the first expedition, Riley
would immediately plana colony of 69 people.
Nice, nice.
With a crew of 600 to support.
Yeah, I love it. That'sstill a thing that we race to.
(18:30):
I got the hots. Iron.
I rub my eyes.
I got the hot saucein your eyes.
Oh, what did we eatearlier today?
What's this? We.
I ate one of them.
Sean decided
he was going to be toughman and get the habanero wings.
He's just really upset about
what happened to the Roanokepeople.
What's this dance?
How do you still.
Have wing sauce on your fingers?I don't.
I wash my hair, wash your hands, you grow.
(18:52):
I wash my hands. Twice. You were there.
The tap didn't work in the sink, remember?
Oh. That's right. Yeah.
We tried to use thisbathroom at wing House,
and I'm, like, washing my hands.
And Sean's like, look, how could it be water?
Look at this. The thing's loose. And I looked down.
I was like, yeah, because the pumps on the ground,
it's just like cabling hangingout of the bottom of the sink.
I can't believe I said, well,this is shit.
Not oh, look, this is worse.
(19:14):
Yeah, not a Disney character.
He did grab the top of it. Golook at this.
And like, wiggle it around.
Anyway, get. On with it.You suck.
There was a crew of 600 peopleto support the initial voyage
and exploration, including one.
Chessie and Manteo.
Are the natives. Yes. Yeah.
So they'd going back to Londonand, like, learned English.
Manteo was like, kind of cool with everyone.
(19:34):
He got along with people
when Chessie was like, yeah, what do you people up to?
Like, I'm pretty suspicious. I,
a fleet of ships would leave
Plymouth in April of 1585.
Was where Tashi, a stoner,I mean.
Now what's that?
What's the what's the thing?
The natives.
(19:55):
Have mushrooms. No.
I guess you're about to get it.
Totally wrong answer. You better say something.
Do you wanna fuck?Yeah. Come on, guys.
I know I'm waiting for himto, like, pull something like
Mexican out of his assand call it peyote or something.
Nah, that's not peyote.
That's from GTA.
Anyway. It doesn't matter.
Doesn't matter?
I'm not suggestingthe natives are stoned.
Okay.
(20:16):
After a pretty standard voyageconsisting of sinkings attacks
on and by the Spanish,
and run of the mill destructionby storms and shoals,
they would settle on RoanokeIsland in August of 1585.
With the destructionof much of their supplies
during the voyage,
they would need to relyon the native population
for support in theinitial stages of the colony.
(20:37):
They would do their bestto immediately
ruin the relationship, though,by accusing the native,
aquascape God, GOC Aquascape GOC
tribe, of stealing a silver cupat night.
Silver cup?
How do I.
The first thing that comesto mind is like,
why would you assumeit was stolen?
You'd just lose it. It's a cup.
(20:57):
When the. Big deal with one cup.
Yeah, well,
when the tribe didn'tgive it back,
even though theymay have never had it,
the English decided thatthey didn't want to appear weak.
And so would burn thetribe's town to the ground.
Despite this little hiccup, they eventually made peace
with the locals and agreedon some land they could use.
Eventually, 107men would stay at the colony,
(21:19):
with the remainingreturning to England
or going to other settlementsfurther south,
or just privateering.
The 107 remaining menwould go on to explore the area
and infect the local populationwith smallpox and or influenza
along the way.
Bringing the joysof the New World.
Yeah, to the lucky. Yeah.
(21:39):
As they went along their way, they would start to heavily
impact local populations,
which in turn impactedtheir full harvests,
which would eventually come backaround to bite the English.
Later on.
They were stories of like,
there was this chieftainthat got sick
and he was like, hey,can you guys come pray for me?
And they the English were like, all right, cool.
(21:59):
So they came alongand prayed for him
and he was like,oh, great, I feel heaps better.
I'm like, actually got healthy.
And he was like, how about you go spread,
this power of prayerwith the other tribes?
And so then the Yanks were like, okay.
And they went out to the other
tribesand just got all them sick.
Oh, just made them sick. Yeah.
So, like, hi, we've cometo teach you how to heal.
And then they all got smallpox,
(22:22):
though the winter,
through the winter,
they would burnthrough their supplies
and end up relying on the localsfor far too much.
Relations between the two groupsdeteriorated to the point
that the native tribeswere teaming up
to attack the English.
And with their expected supplies
and reinforcementsnot arriving when they expected,
the English were leftwith no choice
but to evacuate the island
and return to England, taking Manteo with them again.
(22:45):
The ordeal could almost beits own story,
and I have absolutelyskimmed over it here.
It was like a pretty long periodof like
they ended up in skirmisheswith all these different tribes,
and the tribes were like, planning assaults on them.
And they werelike, let's get out of here.
Enoughfor the tribes to band together.
I'm sure these groups have been
fighting with each otherfor many years,
(23:07):
and they've gone, yeah,I got a minute.
Let's get those guys.Yeah. Yeah.
There was a lot of nativejustice
laid out on the English hereas well.
As an aside, it was only daysafter the evacuation of Roanoke
that the relief fleet
arrived with a year'sworth of supplies and 400 men.
So if they'd just been a littlebit more self-sufficient
and a little bitless aggressive,
the English probablywould have been able
(23:29):
to make this colony work.
The relief fleet left 15men on Roanoke to lay claim on,
to the islandand then set off home.
So they showed up, went,oh, there's no one here.
And thenthey got told like, hey,
yeah, it's probably not bestthat you be here right now.
And they left.
Or they left 15.
So I left 15 men because Riley
(23:49):
had given them instructionto lay claim.
And to do that, you had. Had to that. Yeah.
So they were like, all right, minimum force possible.
Stay here.
We'll be back.
So, like the tone.
Well, yeah, except they weren't
stuck in snow.
Or eating each. Other.
Just stuck in row.
(24:11):
And, That was pretty good.
Good job.
Yeah.
Not forced.
The lost colonybefore they were lost.
So we finally get to the LostColony.
It obviously at this stage.
They weren't their fan colony.
Well, they weren't found.
They were just they have a lot.
The, Can you find somethingyou'd never lost?
(24:32):
They just put their. Yes.
That's philosophy.
Riley wasstill keen to settle the area
and so would organize anotherattempt to colonize the area.
In 1587,
which included a protagonist
from the introduction who I didnot name John White,
his wife and pregnant daughter,as well as Manteo.
(24:53):
What a. Boring name. John.
What I know, right? Yeah.
As well as Manteo, the nativethat seemed to really enjoy
Cross Atlantic.
All right. Yeah, back and forthall the time.
He just loves to say. Yeah.
But at this point he was like,
pretty cool with the English,so they would just like me.
Come along if you want.
The fleet of three shipswould include roughly 115
(25:14):
people and would set sail onMay 8th, 1587,
making it to Croatoan Islandon July 22nd of the same year.
They had initiallywanted to settle Croatoan,
but decidedinstead to go to Roanoke
to meet the 15 men leftby the previous fleet.
When they made it to Roanoke, though,
they found no trace of any man
except for the bones of a manthey believed
(25:35):
to have been killedby the natives.
They would set up shop on the
site of the former settlement
and get down to the businessof getting the place colonized.
So yeah, essentially,
just after everyone left, the natives attacked the 15 men.
I mean, you could see thatcoming.
Yeah, they killed one
and the rest of them just like, stop it up the river.
Never heard from again.
Another thingI haven't mentioned
(25:56):
is that still there today?
Probably you got Roanoke Island
and then, like, just to the south of it,
about 50 miles away,I think, is Croatoan Island.
They have
different names now,but they were very close by.
So, yeah, they went to Croatoan, went and maybe not up to the.
Modern day names at Northand South Stradbroke Island.
(26:18):
Not one of them is calledHollister Island.
I don't know what Roanoke iscalled now.
So they would use Manteoto attempt
to reestablish relationswith the Croatoan tribe.
And after being told the attacks
on the former colonistsby mainland tribes,
attempted to barter a truce.
When no response was given, they decided,
okay,
let's preemptively
(26:39):
attack them and ruin any chanceof a good relationship.
So they went full America, just before they discovered oil.
The tribes might have seenthis coming, though,
as they had already evacuatedthe village, and the Roanoke
colonists instead accidentallykilled Croatoan looters.
Manteo had a lot of work to do,smoothing that one over,
(26:59):
and after successfully doing so,was baptized and made the Lord
of the Roanokeand Dessa monger Ponca.
So they were like, yeah, thanks for your help, buddy.
You can be Christian now.
And also, you're a lord.
During this time.
John wants daughterEleanor gave birth to a daughter
who would be the first child
born to European parentsin North America.
(27:20):
Pretty interesting little sidemission. Yeah.
All right. Yeah.
And then days later, another baby was born.
Imagine how annoyed you'd be.
Like, I'msure they didn't think about it,
but imagine how annoying.
Like, you just pop out a kid2 or 3 days after the other one.
Your kidsnot even remembered by history.
The first one they name, they last name was deer.
There's like heaps of stuffcalled deer in the US.
(27:42):
Okay, a county.Yeah, a whole bunch of stuff.
Eventuallythe colonists would decide that
they wouldn't be able to relyon the native tribes again.
And so John Whitewas asked to sail back
to England to source more food.
Wonder why? Yeah.
So he sent back tohe got, convinced
to go back to sourcemore food, tools and people.
(28:03):
He would reluctantly leave onAugust 27th, 1587,
leaving 115 men, womenand children on Roanoke Island.
So 115 went,
115 went died.
It's so fucking annoying
to cut out that noisein the middle of a podcast.
(28:24):
115 men, women and children went over.
One was killed,
two were born.
John White left. Stop.
It is 11:00.
I'm. Where?
(28:52):
What white had intendedas a short stop over.
Kind of like a peebreak on a road trip.
Turned into a three year delayin returning to Roanoke.
As it turned out, his timingcouldn't have been worse,
as when he arrived in England, the country was at
war with Spain,
and so all shipshad been prohibited
from leaving the countryin order to be used in the war.
White wouldhave two false starts once,
(29:14):
when he was given permissionto leave,
until unfavorable windsstopped him
long enough for the Queento change her mind,
and a second timewhen he got as far as Morocco,
beforehis ships were plundered of
their supplies by the Spanish, and he was forced to turn back.
Eventually, in 1590,Riley would arrange for white
to have passageon some privateering ships
to the Caribbean, two of which he would be allowed
(29:36):
to borrow to duck up to Roanoketo relieve the colony.
By August of 1590,
white and his two shipshad made it to Croatoan Island,
and we're seeingplumes of smoke,
but weren't seeingany colonists.
Between August 15th and 17ththey investigated
three different fires, but found no signs of life.
(29:57):
On the night of the 17th,they reached the island
itself, but decided not togo ashore until the morning.
This was the night from theintroduction, where they loudly
song sung English songs
to try and alert the coloniststhat they were there.
They were on the boats, just like us.
I think he saidthat the introduction.
Did not go.
I must have edited that out.
(30:18):
Well,
they were singing English songson the boat to, like,
try and alert the coloniststhat there were there.
Just some football chants.
The 18th of August saw the party
landing on the beachand finding fresh tracks,
but with nobodycoming to greet them,
they would starttowards the colony
and find a tree with the lettersC, O carved into them,
(30:40):
and would eventually make itto the deserted colony,
where they would find a fence
post with the wordCroatoan carved into it.
This would be the only evidence
they would find, as allthe houses had been dismantled
and anything thatcould be carried was gone.
I thought thiswas just one post, but yeah.
Yeah, one post with Croatoan.
That was. It.
That post is still there.
(31:00):
I don't think so.
But there's a tree that's gotsomething still written now.
Yeah. Okay. Yeah.
There had been an agreementwith the colony
that they would leave
a secret messagewith their destination,
shouldthey need to abandon the site.
And so why?
It was convinced that they hadmoved to Croatoan Island
and would attempt to sail theretwice.
Really?
A secret message when it justsays, yeah, Croatoan.
Telling we their beach.
(31:24):
As he was, sorry
both times, that he attemptedto sail to Croatoan.
There was bad weatherwhich damaged the ships,
and he was forced to turn backas he was on
a privately owned shipthat was being borrowed.
He wasn't able to attempta third time
and had to leave to returnto England
with a remaining ship, promising
to attemptto find the colony on Croatoan.
(31:45):
Over the following years,a few missions were attempted
to find the missing colony, with various expeditions
stopping by the Roanokeand Croatoan Islands to search.
To this day, no trace has beenfound of the missing colonists.
There have been no,there's been no mass graves,
no historical record foundto prove what happened to them.
A true new worldmystery for the ages.
(32:06):
John White was returnedto England and moved to Ireland,
eventually dying in 1893,never knowing
what happened to his wife, daughter and granddaughter.
So it was justthree years later.
Oh really?
Yeah. That he, that he died.Okay.
Time for some theoriesI think. Okay. Yeah.
This was some theories.
So I just want to thank the guysat BuzzFeed unsolved,
(32:28):
the 2017 video on the Roanoke
disappearancefor some of these theories
as well as some of my ownresearch definitely on Wikipedia
theory.
One native tribe murder.
The first theory we'll dive into
is that the local native tribesattacked and murdered
all of the 115 colonistson the Roanoke site.
(32:48):
It tracks with history.
Yeah, everythingthat had happened so far. Yeah.
As we've already covered, there were some pretty serious
tensions between the nativesand the colonists
with the previous colony
going hell for leather to causea straight up war,
both physicallyand biologically.
It's possible
that the native tribesidentified the
weakened situation of the colonyand decided to wipe them out.
(33:11):
This is certainly possible,
as they had already beena murder of colonists
when natives shot GeorgeHowell with arrows
in the first daysof the colony's landing.
The wrinkle in this theoryis that there's no mass graves,
or any sign of a fight
existing on the locationof the Roanoke Colony,
and there would be little reasonfor the natives
to move thebodies to account for this.
So norecord of any bodies there.
(33:35):
There's just
nothing that they can find.
Theory to the colonists
assimilatedinto the native population.
So this theory centers aroundManteo, who had cultivated
good relationshipswith the English over
his multiple trips home and hisobvious Croatoan heritage.
It's been speculated thatwith the lack of supplies
the colonists faced, they had no option
(33:57):
but to turn to the native tribesfor help.
And with the relationship
between the Croatoan tribeand the natives, sorry.
Between the Croatoan Tribe andthe colonists, the healthiest
there may have been a movethere.
This would be backed upby the message left on the tree,
as well as the
established plan to doso should anything happen.
In 1888,there were also 54 natives
(34:17):
who petitioned the US Congressfor aid, citing their bloodline,
including the survivingsettlers.
The Ethnological Bureauof the time concluded
it was thought that traces ofwhite blood could be discovered
among the Indians, someamong them having gray eyes.
It is probablethat the greater number
of the colonists were killed,
but it was quite
in keeping with Indian usages
(34:39):
that a great greateror less number,
especially women and children, should have been made captive
and subsequently incorporatedinto the tribe.
In 2015, archeologists foundobjects on Hatteras Island,
which in 1857was called Croatoan Island,
and these objects were found
to be broken English balls, the hilt of an English sword,
(35:00):
a slight writing
tablet, and agates, which were copper tubes
which we used at the timeto hold cotton fibers.
These objectspointed to English people
of the right social standing, being present at the time.
However, they were foundamong other objects
that were dated to 100 yearslater in the late 1600s,
which muddies the water on
whether the colonistswere there or not.
(35:21):
Additionally,there are no other records
that indicated the colonistsbeing there
or any other objectsthat indicated
the RoanokeColony had made it there at all,
so they never found any personalbelongings.
There'sno record that they were ever
there, even in the native like.
Yep, historical
information.
Yeah, probably, in my opinion, the most likely of the berries.
(35:44):
I think I remember reading
or saying something that says
that is the most likely thingthat happened because of the
I remember the eye thingbeing a thing they, like.
You said grayor blue eyes were present. Yeah.
Something like that. Yeah.
Which couldn't have naturally
occurred.
Occurred. Yeah.
Theory three maybethey just went somewhere else.
(36:04):
This theory centers around a mapthat John White had developed
during his timein the New World.
His map was so accuratethat it matches
Google Earth satelliteimagery of the area today.
And while it displayedthe obvious areas of Roanoke
and Croatoan Islands, italso included a little secret.
There was a small patchon the map that was examined
(36:24):
via X-ray spectroscopy in 2012,which revealed that the patch
was covering a small blue starwhich would indicate Fort.
While the patch had been usedto cover that.
The patch itself
also had markings that indicated
there might be a faded staron top.
While this may have justbeen a mistake that was covered,
the presence of the faded star
(36:45):
might be explained by the useof primitive invisible ink.
Ooh. Madewith either milk or lemon juice.
The theory on the invisibleink is that the fort
was meant to be secretive,
and the map was to be returned
to Englandand sent to the royal court,
which of course, containsSpanish spies.
Lemon juice.
(37:05):
I thought lemon juice was meantto reveal invisible ink.
I hate reveals, yeah.
With lemon juice.
Eat reveals the lemon juice.
So you put lemonjuice on it with lemon juice
and then hate it.
Hate it up? Yeah.
It's possiblethat the Roanoke colony
moved to the fort in orderto consolidate resources
with the people there,
and archeological evidenceat the site does indicate
(37:25):
European presence at the sitearound the time in question,
which were similar to the itemsfound on Croatoan Island.
However, there was no mention ofthe moved at the Roanoke site,
and John White didn't seem tobelieve they had gone inland.
There is also no further recordof the colonists or the fort,
and so little evidence existsto indicate they survived there.
(37:47):
So May, who knows?
Yeah.
Anotherpossible theory in my opinion,
but less likelybecause if it was a fort,
then other people would see themthere.
Yeah, right.
About the fact that the RoanokeColony had moved there. Yeah.
It's that people living there
when there have alreadybeen people at the fort.
You would think so, yeah. Yeah.
Theory for straight up aliens.
(38:10):
Alien abduction.
Yes, of course, that's a theory in this one.
Atlanteans got them. Yeah.
That was the one that. Yeah.
Atlantis isn't necessarilyin the Atlantic Ocean.
No it's not.
But it's more than likelya Greek city.
Which is.
Not in the Atlantic.
(38:30):
Atlantis is much the Greek city.
The Aegean.
Can't think of it.
Don't give it to him. He knows.
All right.
I was going to say Agnus Dei.
Did you see the G in Aegean?
So I just assumed Atlantiswas in the Atlantic Ocean.
(38:51):
Atlantis was theorized by Platoand he made it up constantly.
He was a philosopher.
So you can kind oftake a grain of salt.
I think he said
not only was he a philosopher,he was a philosopher
that developedhis own form of philosophy.
So he was just making shit up.
And then someone decided later,
maybe was maybethis guy was on to something.
(39:12):
He knew he used his teacheras a character.
He started outwith actual tales of him,
and then that just got more andmore upset.
Okay, Socrates,
because Socrates didn't believein writing anything down.
He said if he wrote down
philosophy,it was no longer philosophy.
It was fact.
Yeah, that's not how.
That works,He got killed sitting here with.
(39:37):
Without any record of bodiesand with most items
taken from the site.
Some speculate
that aliens abducted all of thecolonists on Roanoke Island.
I didn't want to takethe island name that I haven't.
Just repeat. Yeah, yeah, just walking around.
Like that 500 years like that.
What's that?
Show 100. Yeah.
There is also a companion theory
(39:57):
that the star hidden on the mapby John White
actually indicatesa landing site for a UFO.
And obviously this was coveredup to stop people thinking
he was crazy.
I guess there is no wayto disprove this theory,
so we have to go with our guton that one.
Well, just no evidence to disprove it.
My brother. However you live the wrong.
(40:18):
Whatever you wantmust be the truth.
Prove it. Wrong.
Has to be that.
Actually, it'sprobably theory five zombies.
That's right.
Aliens aren't the mostoutrageous theory on this one.
Zombie ResearchSociety has has posited
that the island experience.
Sorry for the outbreak.
The Z rays. Yes, the Z.
(40:38):
You know that very upstandingresearch organization,
has positedthat the island experienced
a zombie outbreakwhich resulted in all 115
colonists being killed oneby one as zombies took over.
Then, as it was an island,
they ran out of humans
to devour and so died off,
leaving no trace of the peoplethat had died.
Where they come from to beginwith.
(41:00):
Don't worry about that.
This would explain why no mass
grave was found,and perhaps scavenger
animals took the remains oncethe zombies expired.
There is also a Harvardarcheologist
who found evidenceof cannibalism on the island.
That I can believe.
Though this might in fact, just be regular old cannibalism
caused by.
A zombie zombie cabinet was.
(41:22):
Caused by a severe
drought in the area at the time, resulting in food shortages.
Whatever the reasonfor the disappearance,
definitely zombies.
The RoanokeColony disappearance is a story
that has endured
hundredsof years of investigation
without a conclusive theorybeing proven.
So back to the dinner party.
But one bookthat they found at the end,
(41:43):
he zombie.
Well, not because he washe stopped eating people
and he still had his brain.
But he ate people.
Yeah, that'sjust regular old cannibalism.
Okay.
With so much timebetween the event
and now, it's probable that
without the assistance of timetravel, we will never know
what happened to those 115people on that little island.
(42:04):
Speaking of time travel,
is there a Simpsons episodethat covers it?
Because there's.
That's where the truth will be.
I don't think there is a side,actually, where there's
definitely a Pilgrim episode.
I have to look forward to it.
Matt Groeningis a time traveler.
Is he still doing The Simpsonsor was he handed it off?
I think. Hand it. Off. Yeah,it would make sense if you had.
(42:26):
Anyway, that
is the Roanoke Colony.
I think we can all agree 100.
What did you say 115. 115.
Up and vanished.
Well plus the other 13 to.
You know that they leftwhen they just killed.
One of them was killed. Two of them were killed.
(42:47):
Those 15, though. Oh,
and you said the other settingjust hoofed it up the river.
Yeah, yeah. Okay.
That's that. What do you think.
I'd go with the assimilation.
Yeah. I'mgone with assimilation.
I think that's the most likely
that or just straight upmurdered or both.
Yeah. But you said half about it.
Yeah.
Yeah I reckonthey probably got attacked.
(43:08):
They had no resources.
They went oh crap, let's just go to the Croatoan.
And they took the timeto carve it into a tree
and it would stop. Right.Like they're there. Yeah,
obviously.
Yeah.
They think if it was justa full out attack,
there's no time to.
Yeah.
So they obviously plannedto leave.
Yeah.
(43:29):
They had enough time to.
Everything was taken.Everything?
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah.
They did say there was,John White.
His belongings have been buried
in trunks and they'd been dug upand people had looted it.
So people knew they were gone.Yeah.
So when you said the originally
when they attacked their town.
(43:49):
Village?
They kill looters?
Yes. Where did those just come?
They didn'tattack the Croatoan Village.
They were attacking.
Roanoke.
Roanoke?
No, they were attackingvillages inland.
So they were on the islands.
They'd gone after the villages, other tribes inland
who were trying to attackthe creek.
That was the Croatoan people.
(44:10):
So the Crow townshad gone to loot those villages
and they got killed.Yeah. I'm with you there.
The simulation is
the most plausible theoryfor that one.
It's the one that makes sense.
Yeah, right. Like, theythey had a plan to go there.
They took the timeto carve it into a fence post.
But then the one for meis where they just type.
They just did crow on the, like crow on the tree.
(44:33):
Why would you bother doing that?
They just ran a room.
Why did you choosethe smallest tree?
Now here's the question.
Do you get one shot at timetravel?
Are you using it on this snare?
Yeah.
So it's just going to remaina mystery?
Yeah.
It didn't really matter toJohn White because.
(44:54):
He just. Died. He died?
Yeah, I kind of.
I was like, oh, man, how awful.
Like, you have to livethe rest of his life without.
Knowing it was. Three years.
Yeah. Like all that long.
It's still pretty awful, though.Still pretty.
Your wife, your childand your granddaughter.
It wasn't just White August.
It wasn't just the three yearssince three years before that.
Two that it took to actuallytry and get back to it. So yeah.
So the
(45:15):
you know how I saidhe landed on August 18th
to go investigatewhere they were?
That was his granddaughter'sthird birthday.
Yeah. Yeah.
So he's like, oh where are they.
I got cake. Yeah yeah
I'll be with presents.
Three years worth of presents.
I got you socks.
That would have been sick backthen.
I'm sure new socks.
(45:38):
Brushes.
Anyway,that wraps up that story.
We didn't say it last time,
but if you'd like to seesome supplemental
images, hit us up on at Cheeky Tales
port on Facebook,Twitter and Instagram.
I don't know what we're goingto have for the last one,
but we'll have somethingfor this one.
I mean.
Why not have a beheading photos?
I know I have a beheadingphotos,
(45:59):
obviously.
Okay,
we'll have some Paris photos.
By Dom Blair.
Sacré bleu.
What if Sacre bleu is.
Oh my god,
is Gordon Bleu something? God.
Did it, Did it?
(46:21):
Well, thank you for the episode, boy.
That's all right, boy.
I hope you enjoyed.
I did enjoy it.
I hope the listeners enjoyed.
It means holy blue.
I mean, that makes sense, because Bleu.
Holy blue.
Oh, my God, I'mgoing to start saying that,
Holy blue.
Holy God is sacred.
(46:42):
But has everyone just beensaying it wrong the whole time?
Yeah, probably. Sacré Dieu,
I guarantee you, they'vejust been saying it wrong.
I thought it was really.
So I did I.
Suck read did. Sacré. Did.
Oh my blue.
Yeah, that's whatthe people have been saying.
Oh my Bluey.
That's another bombshellto end on.
(47:02):
Thank you for listening.
We'll be back in a fortnight.
Yes, we will be. Yes.
Getting closer to Ireland'sfirst
special themed podcast.
Yeah. October Halloween Fest.

Yeah, two episodesstarring people mocking be.
(47:25):
I'm alreadytrying to weasel out of this.

and thenyou'll have to do it again.
