This encore episode drops us into the demon Screwtape’s masterclass on weaponizing wounded pride. The target? A freshly converted believer whose greatest threat isn’t outright sin, but a simmering grudge against a godly woman who dared to correct him. Screwtape then teaches his demonic nephew, Wormwood, how to polish offense into idolatry—turning every sermon, song, and sacrificial act of the believers new church family into proof that he’s “not being fed.” Tune in as we expose the demonic math: one small grievance + relentless rigorous reflection on a grievance = a soul too distracted to pray.

So there's that.
Wow, we are wrapping up theScrewtape letters.
For those of you who are justnow joining us, we are talking
about the book the ScrewtapeLetters by author CS Lewis.

(04:30):
Last name spelled L-E-W-I-S,and it is a classic novel
written back in 1940s.
I'm pretty sure it's 1941, butjust in case I'm wrong, I'm just
going to say the 1940s.
It's not a huge book.
It's just 31 letters and theletters are not long at all.

(04:51):
It's just letters from UncleScrewtape, which of course his
name is in the title, theScrewtape Letters.
But it's letters from UncleScrewtape, who is a demon, to
his nephew Wormwood, who is alsoa demon.
He's just a newer demon andtrying to learn the ways of
demonhood, I guess would be aperfect way to say that.

(05:11):
And his uncle miles away fromhis nephew.
No, you can stay.
Screwtape is tutoring him inthat and right now I think we're
going to cover letters.
There's only there's 31 lettersin the book, letters that
Screwtape is writing to nephew, and today we're in this episode.
We're going to cover letters 25, 26, and 27.

(05:32):
And but for those of you whoare like the Screwtape, letters,
cs Lewis, what are you guystalking about?
Demons, what.
So if you go back to the verywe've been talking about this
book all summer and the topicsthat it covers, so if you really
want to know more about it andeverything that it's about,

(05:52):
please go back to our June 7thepisode and it's like an
introduction to why we'retalking about the Screwtape
letters, the topic of demons andwhat the Bible has to say about
them, and it just kind of givesyou a good foundation as you
continue to listen to theepisodes that we hear on the

(06:13):
Screwtape letters.
Okay, so in these, the nextthree letters, 25, 26, and 27,.
For those of you who tuned inlast week, you know that
Wormwood has been assigned thehuman that he has been assigned
to.
He's a young novice demon undertutelage of his nephew excuse

(06:37):
me, of his uncle's Screwtape, and he's been assigned as human,
a man who appears to be in histhrees and he has not been doing
a good job as far as a youngtempter is concerned.
He and his uncle's Screwtape iswriting is now writing his
letters in more of a rant, because he has let his human

(07:04):
that he has been assigned to notonly become a Christian but
fall in love with a Christianwoman who is like I think he
describes it in letters likeyears beyond him in spirituality
A Christian woman who is very, very devout, who's very, very
willing for faith, and not onlyher but her whole entire
household.

(07:25):
So the uncle is reallydisappointed in the nephew at
this point about how he's let ithappen.
And of course he's like, afterhe's ranted and raved and called
or would a whole bunch of namesand his stupidity and

(07:45):
everything else, he's like, okay, well, this is the deal, Like
it's already done.
He's already met this girl,he's in love with her, he loves
her family, and they keep, youknow, they're just going to keep
trying to poison him with thetruth, you know, and everything
else.
So we got to do everything thatwe have to do to put a stop to

(08:06):
that right and everything.
So he first he said, okay, first we're going to introduce,
try to distract him withpolitics and politics and
distraction.
We're just, you know, religion,we're just going to try to

(08:27):
distract him.
So he focused less on what theyhave to say and more on what's
going on in the world around him.
Now politics and I forgot tomention this in the last episode
politics in the time that thisbook was written is very
important because there was aworld war about to start and

(08:47):
this young man is in England andthey're about to be involved in
this war.
So he's I get him alldistracted with all the
mumblings and rowings of war andeverything like that and we're
going to do all of that.
So Wormwood attempted to dothat and he of course he failed.

(09:09):
And so he's like, okay, well, let's try another tactic, young
nephew, and he says let's startby having him think that
everything is just the same oldthing, To where nothing is new,
nothing is progressing, nothingis getting better, and he

(09:32):
becomes very discontent with hislife, which will lead to him
being discontent in his faith, and then he would become
restless and that's where wewant him.
Young Timter is pretty muchwhat he's telling his nephew and
that's what he's saying.

(09:52):
And he also says the horror ofthe same old thing is one of the
most valuable passions we haveproduced in the human heart.
This is the uncle demon talkingto the nephew demon and he says
God loves platitudes of aproposed course of action.
He wants man, so far as I cansee, to has very simple

(10:13):
questions.
He wants them to ask questionslike is it righteous, Is it
prudent, Is it possible?
Now, if we can keep man asking,is it an incoordance with the
general movement of our time?
Is it progressive or is itreactionary?
Is this the way that history isgoing?
Then they will neglect therelevant questions.

(10:34):
And the questions they do askare, of course, unanswerable,
For they do not know the future, and what the future will be
depends very largely on justthose choices which they now
invoke the future to help themto make.
As a result, while their mindsare buzzing in this vacuum, we
have the better chance to slipin and bend them to the action

(10:58):
we, the demons, have decided on.
So, basically, what he issaying here is, instead of
having them to react, God willwant them to act when they see
things going on that keeps goingon and everything else.
Instead of asking questions likeis it righteous, Is it prudent,
Is it possible, how do I reactto this?

(11:20):
Get them to say, well, is it inline with the current culture,
Is it in line with the generalmovement, Is it in line with
what history has to say about it?
And just keep them thinking inthat way, Keep their mind in a
vacuum so that they can slip inand bend the action of that
person to their will.

(11:41):
What do you think about that,Sherry?

Speaker 2 (11:45):
I completely understand and agree with what
you're saying and it makes methink as I'm sitting here
listening to you.
We are a society and I knowthat I'm comparing it to 1941.
I'm sure back then they had alot of distractions also and, if
they can, if distraction wasone of the main ploys even back

(12:05):
then, before the discovery orbefore the invention of home
computers see for social mediabefore cell phones and
smartphones.
imagine how much more we have tobe on guard and on watch.
And it's so important that wetake that time at the beginning

(12:26):
of the day to fill up with Godand to arm ourselves with God
and then put those rest periodsof time in our schedule, because
otherwise we're just going tobe in such a hurried, frantic
state of mind that we're goingto be given over to whatever it

(12:49):
is, that we're going to be moresusceptible to just being led
instead of leading.
That's what I'm trying to say.
There we go.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
Oh, absolutely, and that's a really good phrase
being led instead of leading, right Falling into that
distraction that we talked aboutin more detail in last week's
episode, and you're being led bythe tempter instead of you

(13:20):
doing the leading.
And so that is a very, very, very good point, as Chris and I,
as believers, we want to bedoing the leading, we don't want
to be led.
Fortunately, right now, we arenot under the threat of war, but

(13:42):
can you just imagine if we wereall the things that would be
going through our minds and howthe enemy could use that to get
us so distracted and not focusedand just thinking, oh my
goodness, it's just not going toget any better.
It's the same old thing.
War after war after war, itbecomes tiring, and what he's
saying is that we want to getthem tired and restless of all

(14:04):
of this so that we can swim inand we can just completely pull
them even down further.
So you're right, we have tostart our days right.
We have to start it with prayerand worship and keep our focus
on what's really, reallyimportant in the long run.

(14:26):
And another one of the tacticsthat he uses is unselfishness
and because pretty much whatUncle Skuteype is telling his
nephew Wormwood is let's alsoinsert unselfishness into your

(14:47):
patients, right?
And this is Uncle Skuteypepretty much talking to Wormwood.
Because Wormwood, even though alot of people think they're
unselfish, they're really not.
They're insecure and they puton unselfishness to hide
weaknesses and their people seethem and like, oh, they're so

(15:10):
selfless.
They always doing stuff forother people and everything else
.
And Skuteype is pretty muchsaying that's hogwash.
We get them to act like they'reunselfish but in the end
they're very, very upset and wecan use that nephew Wormwood to
our advantage.
So, with this war going on andpeople making preparations, let

(15:33):
him go out of his way to helppeople and everything else, but
at the same time that's going tobe discontent because he's
going to be I'm doing all thisstuff for other people.
What are people doing for me?
Or I did this for that personand they couldn't even check on
my mom.
Or I did this for that personand then they couldn't even come

(15:55):
to see if I was all right afterthis happened in our
neighborhood with the potentialwar coming on, and so he's like
unselfishness is actually a toolthat we use young nephew
Wormwood to our advantage, because they're really just
hiding a weakness.
They're pretending to besomething that they're really

(16:16):
not.
But even if they are the trueunselfish type of person, it's
very easy for us to use that andmanipulate that, as they see
how much, because they knoweverything, they've done for
everybody else, but they're likewell, couldn't that person do
this with small favor for me?
What do you think about thattype of temptation, sherry?
Do you think Uncle Spooldap isright?

Speaker 2 (16:38):
I love how you explained that, because I really
wasn't sure where all that wasgoing, and that makes complete
and total sense.
So, even when you takesomething that is technically
from the Bible, we're supposedto not think of ourselves but
think of others.
We're supposed to be selflessnot unselfish, but selfless and

(17:00):
I love that description that younailed it.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
Yeah, and he's like, and that's exactly what he's
talking about.
And as I was reading throughthe letters and everything else
and I'm like you know what, Inever thought of it like that.
You know, and you know, but ina way, it's a tool that can be
so easily manipulated, you know,by someone excuse me, by the

(17:29):
enemy so easily, so, so, soeasily.
And the reason I say that isbecause I have been blessed
enough to know a lot of selflesspeople, you know and there's a
lot of selfless people right, and who I have just been in awe

(17:52):
of.
How many times they have goneout of their way to do something
for someone else, even if theywere tired, even if they have
been busy all day, even if theyhad tons of turmoil going on in
chaos and crises going on intheir own life, how they would
still be there for others.

(18:13):
You know, and but later I wouldhear, you know, years, even
years, after all this was done, and they weren't saying it in a
mean way, but they were justlike, you know, all I wanted
them to do was this, and theycouldn't even do that After I

(18:34):
was there for them and theirfamily when their husband died,
and you know I was there towatch the kids and you know, and
everything else, and you knowthey get hurt by that.
They're not mad, they're justhurt Because the enemy can take
that, make it in where it almostseems like those people took

(18:59):
advantage of that person, right, and it's.
And so, like I said, they're notangry, they're just more hurt.
Like, wow, did they forget?
You know how?
I said everything aside, in themiddle of everything I was
going through to help them.
You know, did they forget that?
Like, did it mean nothing tothem?

(19:21):
So it ended up being a hurt.
And what does the enemy do withhurt?
He can twist a candy sherry, ohyeah.
He can turn that intobitterness, he can turn that
into anger, he can turn thatinto resentment, you know.
And then that person you helpedis like, hey, how are you?
And then you're like looking atthem differently, right,

(19:45):
because the enemy has beentempting you with.
Can you believe it?
Can you believe it?
You dropped everything.
You were there for them.
When they couldn't even lifttheir head up, you were there.
You were there when they neededsomeone to watch their kids.
You were there.
When they needed someone totake them somewhere, you were
there when they needed food, youwent into your own pockets.

(20:07):
Even though it hurts, make surethat the kids have food to eat.
And now look at this.
They can't even do this for you, and the longer you nurse those
little, tempting little placesthey come in, they can't help
but turn into bitterness, angerand resentment.
They can't help it.
And the one thing we have tosay it goes back to what you

(20:27):
said earlier we have to reallyjust take those things to God
and, like Lord, please don't letthis take root.
Do not let it take root.
I do not want this to be astumbling block in the gift of
service that you have given me,to be there for others.
Because how easy would it be?

(20:48):
Like I'm not helping anybodyelse anymore, right?
You're all a bunch ofungrateful little snot, you know
, and I'm just not going to doit.
How easy would it be to do that?
Right?
And it'd be even easier onceyou let bitterness and
resentment set in.
What did you want to add tothat, sherry?

Speaker 2 (21:08):
Oh, I completely agree with you on that.
I think that if we need tocheck our motives to begin with,
if our motives are to keepscore, then we shouldn't be
doing it.
There's a verse in the Bible,which I don't know exactly which
one it is, but basically it'ssaying if you're not doing it
with the right heart, don'tbother doing it, Because God

(21:29):
doesn't want you to do somethinggrudgingly.
He wants a cheerful giver.
So if you're not givingcheerfully, then you might as
well not give.
So we need to check our heartsfirst and foremost, and if we're
not doing it with an attitudeof not keeping score, then don't
bother to do it.
My prayer partner, annie youguys have met her.
She is amazing at this.

(21:50):
Like she has such a gift forgiving, like her spiritual gift
is giving, and she gives becauseshe wants to, not because she
has to, and there are never, ever, any strings attached, and
that is the example that we'resupposed to follow.
We should never have stringsattached to our giving.
My sister is another great one.

(22:10):
It's funny because she will buyour kids school clothes, or
she'll buy our kids stuff orwhatever, and I will get mad
because I'll be like and this isback when our kids were younger
, so I'm not throwing mychildren under the bus by any
means they were just young andso they would be messy and so
their clothes would be on thefloor, they wouldn't take as

(22:32):
good of care of them as I wouldwant them to, and I would get
really angry and my sister wouldremind me.
She's like Sherry, those are agift.
They can do with it whateverthey want to.
Once it was given to them, itis now theirs.
They don't have any, you know, they don't answer to anybody for
them except for themselves.
And I thought, wow, what areally great lesson and what a

(22:53):
really great reminder for me.
But but yeah, so if you're notgoing to give in the right way,
then don't give it all, becauseSatan will use that until twist
it and he'll he'll turn it intosomething terrible.

Speaker 1 (23:07):
Well, he'll use it anyway, because you may even go
into it with a good heart andyou may not even need a favor or
want them to do something oranything until much, much later.
And they may be like, oh, sosorry, too busy, can't do it
Right, and it's best.
When that happened, especiallylike, oh Lord, that is so
disappointing, but that's okay,take that, because I don't want

(23:29):
the enemy to use it, right asjust.
We just have to just just getagain, just hand that over over
to God, because it is so easy tothink that people have taken
advantage of you or they'vetaken you for granted or you
know, and things like that.
So always go into it with awith a cheerful heart Is that

(23:53):
what the King James version, Ithink, says?
Or joyful, but I think it'scheerful.
Go into it with a cheerfulheart and be at peace.
Try your best to be at peacewith the fact that if you need
them one day and they can helpyou, great.
But if you need them one dayand they can't, great.

(24:14):
God is good either way, andthere'll be no bitterness,
resentment or anger on eitherside.
Right, you know, you're justlike Lord.
I'm going into this and I, I'mhuman.
I have these feelings, butrather you know only you know
the future.
Well, I need a favor from himin the future.
I have no idea.

(24:35):
But if they're not able todeliver on that, help me to not
be bitter about it, because Iwant to go into this with a
clean, cheerful heart that, nomatter what happens, I'm doing
what you have instructed me todo and for no other reason than
that, and I'm going to be gladabout it, regardless of how it
is.
Protect my heart, you know, as Igo into this situation and a

(24:58):
lot of times we do need that, you know God to just intervene
and protect our hearts andsituations, because sometimes we
kind of go into it and it'slike we kind of know that
they're not going to be reallyappreciative of it maybe, let
alone grateful, and they mayeven be entitled.
Right, oh, you ought to do thisfor me.

(25:21):
You're my big sister, you're myaunt, You're my cousin, you're
my niece, you're my daughter.
Right, you ought to be able todo this for me, and they don't
know and or don't care at thecost.
It comes from you that you haveto do and a sacrifice is you
have to make in order toaccommodate them, and that is

(25:45):
why, like Sherry said, goinginto a relationship, what a
cheerful heart is key, becauseyou may never get a thank you,
you may never get anacknowledgement as a matter of
fact, as soon as you've droppedeverything and you went to their
aid.
They may forget it by the nextday because I feel like you owe
it to them in some way, and soif you have a tender heart as

(26:08):
God, to protect it so that itdoesn't turn into something much
bigger later, that makes sense,sherry.

Speaker 2 (26:17):
Oh, that is such wise advice, such wise advice.

Speaker 1 (26:23):
And in letter 27, he, screwtape, once again, is
ranting at his nephew Wormwoodbecause, as the patients love
for his new Christian girlfriendgoes and this is a Christian
girlfriend from screwtape'sprevious letters you guys can go
back and listen to the previousepisode to where he this is the

(26:45):
worst kind of girl that hisdemon nephew could have let this
man fall in love with, becauseshe's on fire.
Not only is she on fire, shecomes from a good family who's
also on fire for the Lord, andthey are strong in their faith,
so much so that even guests, when they leave, feel changed,
you know, and everything else.
And so he's ranting again atWormwood for this huge mistake,

(27:08):
this colossal mistake that hehas made.
And screwtape in this letternow he's saying that the
patient's love for the girl hascontinued to grow stronger and
as war efforts loom, the man'sprayers have shifted from his
normal daily bread prayers toattentive appeals directly to

(27:29):
God for guidance.
And Uncle Screwtape is very madabout this.
He's like before he met thisgirl he was just, you know,
father God, help me this, theyhelp me that, they help me with
this, help us with that.
He was like there were dailybread prayers.
He's like now he's like seekingout to God.

(27:49):
He's appealing directly to Godfor guidance.
He's saying, lord, the war ison our doorstep, it's coming.
It's no longer a rumor, it's nolonger a thought, it's no
longer a conspiracy theory.
It is here they have landed.
Basically, war is here.
I need your help, we need yourguidance.

(28:11):
Where do we go?
What do we do?
How do we handle this?
Should we flee?
Should we stay?
How should we prepare, you know?
So he's started saying prayerslike this just, you know,
seeking, reaching out for God,and Screwtape is like warm wood.
You, whatever he goes into hisrant how could you have let this

(28:32):
happen?
How could you have let thishappen?
He went from just his dailyprayer, prayers to where he's
seeking God now, seeking hisface, you know, and everything
else.
He's asking him for guidance, and you know, and things like
that.
So he's like okay, now we havegot to find a way to use to turn
this against him, because wedon't want him seeking God, we

(28:55):
don't want him going closer toGod and seeking his guidance.
No, we want him to be confusedin all the chaos.
Can you see the enemy doingthat, sherry?
Isn't it something just likethe enemy would do?
Oh, absolutely, absolutely itis, and that is something, as we

(29:15):
wrap this episode up, that weneed to be very careful of.
It's almost as if the closeryou get I can't say almost, as
if I believe it's scripturalcorrect me if I'm wrong, sherry
that the closer we get to theLord, the more the enemy
increases his attack.
I should say with an S.

(29:37):
And so now he's just went fromLord, give me this, lord, do
this for me, lord, do that forme, lord, do this for my
girlfriend to help me, lord, help us.
What do we do?
Because that breeds more of anintimate relationship, more of
like a friendship right With thesavior, and screwtapes Like,

(30:01):
wait, what?
No, no, we can't have this, youknow, we just can't.
And so again he just tears intohis nephew Wormwood and he's
like okay, so now this is whatwe're going to do.
We're going to get himdistracted.
We don't want him reaching outto God like that, we don't want
him becoming closer to God.
So we just need, you need toincrease your efforts to do so,

(30:25):
and again, right now, currentlywe do not have, you know, war at
our doorstep, meaning, as faras we, as far as I know, we
don't have anyone here onAmerican soil with troops,
american foreign troops that'sthe best way to put it, you know
, like headed to our towns.

(30:46):
As you know, apparently it'sthe case with this young human
that the devil young demonWormwood was assigned to.
That will be a very, very scarything, wouldn't it be, sherry?

Speaker 2 (30:59):
Something I do not want to even think about, to be
honest.

Speaker 1 (31:03):
I know, right, it's even scary and but as Christians
and believers, it brings us toour knees.
Right, we're like Lord, help us.
What do we do?
Do we fight back?
Do we go willingly, like ifthey try to capture us?
You know what do we do, but allthose things, if we keep our
focus on God, he will lead us tothe right things to do, and I'm

(31:27):
going to let you go ahead afterthat, sherry.

Speaker 2 (31:33):
I yep.
It just really all goes back toJohn 1633.
These things I have spoken toyou that in me you may have
peace In the world.
You will have tribulation, butbe of good cheer, I have
overcome the world.
I used to hate verses like that, to be honest with you.
I used to be like nope, god, Idon't want to think about that.

(31:54):
You tell me that you give mepeace, but how can I have peace
when you also tell me I'm goingto have tribulation?
But the closer that we get toGod and the more that we realize
that he really truly is incharge of everything and that he
has our lives in his, the palmof his hand, he has our days
numbered, and by that I don'tmean that as a bad omen, but I

(32:14):
mean it as a, as a soothingblanket.
He knows when we're going todie, and I used to worry about
death too, not because I didn'tknow where I was going, but I
didn't want the whole idea ofthe dying process.
But the Bible assures us thathe's going to be from our last
breath here on earth to ourfirst breath in heaven.
He's going to be with us theentire time.

(32:36):
He's not going to leave us orforsake us.
He's certainly not going toleave us during the dying
process and while we're notdying and we don't have war
right now and I'm not trying tomake the end of the episode
negative I I guess they reallywant to try to make it positive
that God is with us, that wewill have triple glacial, but we
can still have peace and we canstill have good cheer because

(32:59):
God is in charge of everything.
Satan has a lot of tempertantrums and he gives a lot of
um, he blows a lot of smoke, butGod is still in control, god is
still in charge and while hegives us free will and that's a
topic for another day God isstill in control and we can have

(33:19):
peace and hope and joy withthat.
