Speaker 1 (00:10):
The man.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
This family.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Welcome into a special edition of the game playing with
Hey coach Dan Quinn, Rogan, Pauls and I'm your host,
Brian Cold Virginia. And we're not in the mayor did
today coach first, big roat. We're out here in Madrid
at the facility. We got the water going, we got
the vibes going. Coach, We appreciate you. Has this been
your first international game that you coach?
Speaker 1 (00:30):
How are you enjoying it so far?
Speaker 4 (00:31):
So it's a cool spot to be here at Real Madrid.
So we get three days of practice here today, Thursday
and Friday, and so what a complex man of you can.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Tell you know why they're one.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
Of the heavy hitters in this region. And you can
feel it, you know the way that you know that
great setup for us. The players yesterday went over to
an American Football League team called the Madrid Bravos and
so they to live there to get ready and so
it just started maybe a year or two ago. But
how cool is that that they're in the it's called
(01:06):
the European Football League and the team right here for
Madrid's competing in that as well.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
So two different spots, you know, probas even quite here.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
But it's really cool to see football like taking shape
in different areas and different locations. So for a team
just to get started here, I think that's really cool.
And coach, like, how important is like this road trip element?
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:27):
You always talk about building relationships, and this seems like
a great opportunity for the guys to really connect with
on home yep, and uh, you know, I like the.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
Road trips with the guys with some training camps or
when it was out west, you know, to go extra
couple of days.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
So for us, this is exactly what we need in
this space.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
And so more football related honestly, you know, extra film together,
let's walk through this, let's go through practice again, let's
go through the next, let's go through what's really again,
Let's go through and.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
So and so.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
There'll be time for dinners and those things. But on
this trip, it's about their connection as ballplayers, getting our
football aligned like we want, and so that's job number one.
By the time it gets to Sunday afternoon, those extra meetings,
that extra time together and really making the choice, hey man,
this is this.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Is how we want to get down and coach, this
is a big game against the Miami Dolphins and you
made a switch on the defensive side of the ball.
Can you explain a little bit what Joe Wood Junior's
role will be now and why was it pointing for
you to still have his voice involved in his defense?
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Absolutely, Joe's been a right hand man for me for
you know, a long time, and we've felt off and
that's not that uncommon for this to take place in
the NFL, where hey, let me take this, you know,
calling in for a while and see if that can
hear a different voice and hear a different space to go.
Joe's you know, absolutely involved, and you know it's an
assist me in game day preparation, all of it if
(02:46):
we know what that vibe could feel like.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
We actually did it together.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
In Dallas for three years, so we've got great familiarity
with one another.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
What I can you know, count on from him, game
day preparation, all of it.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
So we'll you're going to lean into that and coach, like,
how does your game day change now that you're how
does your week change now that you're calling the defense?
Are you grinding tap more than you were before? Talking
with the guys more? Is it?
Speaker 5 (03:07):
Ye?
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Talking with the guys. More for sure. I've done it before.
I did it someth in Atlanta. Remember that I was
there for a little.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
Bit of it, and so I have some space of
what that's like, did in twenty sixteen, twenty eighteen. So
I'm prepared for that and I know the rhythm of that,
and so I'll get into that rhythm. You know, then
whatever's needed for us right now to help us, you know,
that's that's the goal. We got to you know, big
beach staff, lean into everybody to make sure you know
game day roles. There'll be some small tweaking you wouldn't
(03:32):
see it from the outside, but you know things that
we have to adjust.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
We'll do that. And coaching is a goal against the guy.
And Mike McDaniel, who you're very familiar with.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
How have you seen him grow throughout these I think
you've got started back in with twenty.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
Sixteen together it did, yes, And so Mike Scott like
exceptional mental quickness. You know, as a quarterback, it's no
surprise that their quarterback throws it the quickest, most motions
like that's how Mike thinks. Like he's super sharp. He's
capable really of coaching any position on off could make
Mike the line coach. He would know how to do
it the tight ends, Like that's how sharp he is
(04:04):
a football And that's not everybody where.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Okay, you know, most people kind of stayed.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
To where they played or how they did that.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Mike's got this vast experience.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
He knows the line, he knows the combinations, he knows
quarterback play, receiver play, running back play.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
So he's got the full compliment.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
And that's probably one of the things I was always
most impressed with one coach.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
To think about Mike in this offense is like it's
so well schemed to like mess with the defense's eyes, Like,
how do you get the guys ready to deal with
all of the motions, the shifts, the personnel though crazy
backfield actions.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
How do you get those guys right? Yeah, it takes
a lot.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
We certainly need those full speed looks, you know, at
practice this week. And the purpose behind that is when
do you ball when you know? Because there's gonna be
a shift and a motion on every play. So that's
the challenge for the defense that can we get you know,
cleats in the grass and still attack while making the
necessary adjustments. But more than anything, like against any offense,
you got to be able to disrupt them sure cause
him havoc and we'll certainly do that.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
And offense. And I'm looking over at Marcus marri oldis
I have hip over there? He's getting the start once again.
Has been a true leader for this team. What did
you see from him in last game that you want
to see him replicate and try to find some more
success against the land A build.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
Yeah, Well, I thought number one, he's got great control
over the offense, you know when we're at the line
of scrimmage or you know, into hard and work out.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Of that, like total control of all that.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
What I want to see from us take another step
forward is on third down, and that would be one
that we can improve upon. We're going to give extra
reps to a practice, but that's the next step for us.
I thought the run game made good strides, play pass
that went off of that third down.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
That's going to be a big key. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
And third down is this where it's it seems very fickle,
you know, statistically, like how do you drill that make
sure that he's ready to go, because it's it's not
just him, it's the receivers.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
That that's right, and uh, really, you know, where are
we going to get?
Speaker 4 (05:54):
Man and man, how can we go get that when
people want to try to deny the ball and challenge
the routes, you know, can we organize that to make
sure if that's going to happen, this is what we're
going to go to and we're gonna work hard at
doing that.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Talk so much about the battle in the trenches, right,
that trench warfare. What don't we see from our offensive line?
I mean, it's not always easy to block for a
new quarterback. However they have found some success.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
Yes, and especially I thought on the protection side. Then
you like being square, throwing your hands, being aggressive. The
run action can help on that. And the reason I
say that is here's a run, here's the play pass
that goes off it, and so it's much harder for
a defensive lineman to rush when he's defending the run first.
So having that part of it was a big factor.
But we really count on this through you know, our
(06:34):
offensive line, our running game. That's one of the you
know the areas we say, man, these are some heavy hitters.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
We got to lean in on these guys, and we'll
continue to do that. Yeah, and coach, like a guy
that sticks out to me, there's really two guys.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
It's connor Ly and Cosmy and just how they've kind
of gelled over the last couple of weeks coming together.
Connolly's playing physically better. You can see the relationship with
Cosby girlin what have you seen from that side of
the offensive line.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
Yeah, and that's what we're hoping to see that condu
practice after practice, because.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
When you don't have that time together, you know you
want to do that. Sometimes it's unspoken, Yeah, you know
communication so many times it's a bee we're going to hear.
Oftentimes here's a walk up by a backer and we
know what we're going to do.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
So given those looks, practices, meetings, spending time together, that's
a big step in that way.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
And coach, when you look at last week for Miami Dolphins,
their defense had a very explosive performance against a really,
really good offense. When you've been preparing for this team,
what did you see this stuck out that works for them?
Speaker 4 (07:30):
You know, I thought in their base defensive package, especially
at linebackers, they're really active. Their corners were aggressive, but
the linebacker play the edge, setting you know, I thought
that was one of the real factors, you know, in
that game, and anytime you can tackle well against you know,
a team like that. I'm not sure they demonstrated that
as well.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
And then Anthony Weaver. It's kind of funny their offensive
defense seem to kind of mirror each other. It's like
all these some Brithplets' four man overloads and the disguise
covered really well. How do you help the offense kind
of navigate some of those more complicated looks.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Yeah, I think you don't want to have to find
every look. Sure, you got to have.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
Some rules logan in terms of who people are, where
the location is, who they are on the field.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
And it takes them extra because at times you'll want
to get all five outs.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
Yeah, okay, they're going to walk all these people up
and get people out. And there's other times where we
may want, hey, let's keep it tight end and get
you know, some contact inside.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
But it takes a balance and you know, when.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
You can get out and spread everybody out, when you
want to keep an extra player in, you know, to
get some contact.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
But you know, I thought but was also one of
those real factors special.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
But the start, it's the big games that comes into
its more scenes. We've been going a whole week. There's
so many things going on. For some guys like you,
this is their first time playing on the road.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
Like this house. You keep the guys lot to keep
it the main thing, main thing, you know.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
It's been awesome is like everybody from back home and
the commanders, like there are so many.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
Hours that have gone into this trip.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
Can make it easy to stay in the routine for
the coaches and for the players, from everything to you know,
how we were going to travel, what things we could
do for that, what would look like here at the hotel,
what time we wanted to arrive, like all of it
down to a tee where we'd practice. So for a player,
they can you know, get into that routine more quickly,
(09:18):
and meetings setups are the same, you know. And so
I just thought, you know, give a shout out to
our family, our crew back home that really put in
all the hours to come here.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
There were advanced teams to come out. Think of all
the IT and video equipment that had to be a
part of the shoga. So he didn't do it, but
a lot of a lot of people who really worked hard.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
So the team could just just get into that routine, man,
And that was the purpose of coming out early, that
they could get their minds and bodies right.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
So by the time we got to Sunday that we
could really let it rip.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
And so Wednesday a little slower, Thursday speeds up, Friday
speeds up even more.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
So it was really important all the work.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
Back on.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
What culture. I appreciate you Toime that was, but you
a low to get into the film stud coach.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Obviously no film clips right here in Madrid, but I
think we can talk through some plays absolutely, because there
were some positive ones for the offense last week. Let's
start with the completion of Robbie Chosen a big kind
of deep bench on the out there, and the thing
I love about it is the play a should pass
thirteen personnel. Everyone's packed in and you really see the
effect on the linebackers.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
Yeah, you know, that's where the explosive plays live. And
so to see Robbie outside the numbers, that's where, like
he's made a lot of his big plays, going up
can tested catches, he can jump, he's got speed to go.
So outside the numbers, big play action pass markets can
put it almost into either location. So yeah, that was
a big play.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
And I think the other thing too, is like when
you just look at the linebackers for Detroit, like how
close they get to the line of scrimmage. They're in
a Cover three structure there. It really lets that throwing
lane be very clear for markets.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Yeah, and now you can get downhill the action run
action takes care of that, but you have to be
committed into the run to do those until It's nice
to see some of the runs pop. Even logan, some
of the runs that go two yards and three yards
are effective because what can come behind that in the playpass.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
And it also keeps you on schedule. Right, do you
know like third and seventh or second and seven still
is a manageable down in distry for the offense.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Right, let's talk about it.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Jayen Lane, he's kind of pop pupped up a little bit.
Explosive plays. He has this beautiful post route. Marks is
a great job getting the ball there. They're in Tampa
two and you see the respect that the team has
the Troit Lions had for Debo because they jumped the
ind He's supposed to be the middle run through player,
that middle linebacker and Jale leaders a gat job coming.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Out with the ball.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
It's so funny. We ran the same play in practice, huh,
And they said, man, that is an absolute brotherhood route
where he was just ripping on the post and the
player went as high as he can, so Marcus ripped
it underneath. And so when you see those two things,
you're not exactly sure how it will play out in
the game, but you just gotta fly. You just gotta go.
And now if there's an opt to go for the
(11:52):
big one, you take it. And if they sit down,
like a lot of times, hey there's there's deebo I
gotta go sit to that.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
And then you go rip it over the that's so funny.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
You weren't expecting that to happen.
Speaker 4 (12:01):
Yeah, the same play. And so when you get those
ones on full speed looks at practice, it makes a
big difference.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
You're not sure.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
You just have to make the choice to go, and
certainly Jaling Line did.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
And the other thing that I just you know, Marcus
gets the shout out on the Robby Chosen play, but
also on this play because he does a great job
of kind of navigating the pocket, which is something people
don't give him a ton of credit.
Speaker 4 (12:19):
For necessarily and so remaining a pass or keeping his
eyes downfield knowing that, hey, I just need one more
time to see this thing through. Okay, now I know
what it is in an absolute dyme to jail.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
Yeah, and the other one obviously a couple of touchdowns
in this game, touchdown at depot who made a bunch
of big plays, But the one in the end zone
always kind of sticks out to you. They're in zero pressure,
like nice flat contour there. First off protection is excellent,
and I think that group is playing they deserve a
shout out. They're playing for some good ball right now.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
Yeah, I thought running backs, tight ends, O line. They
spent the extra time running backs O line, you know,
centers and quarterbacks especially to make sure like hey, let's
absolutely knowing they had some pressures and some zero looks
to go, but having that confidence for a running back
stepping up to make them block, and the quarterback knowing
I trust my guy, you know, to go make the block.
That's a big deal.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
And I think the great thing about it is in
zero you expect there, at least as an offensive player,
I expect there'd be one free runner on this look.
There's no free runners because the tight end mc nichols
has been great all year getting there. Do a great
job with that. And then obviously Cliff does a great
job with the concept great answer versus zero kind of
that pseudo rub kind of pick route on the perimeter,
kind of what I would call like a post with
a wheel yep, and he's wide open.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Coach, that's the part like of you going into that.
Would there be some chances that you have to beat
man to man and when do they play zone? When
do you play man to man? When those moments come Logan,
that's you know, it's not gonna happen every play, but
when the moment comes, you gotta be able to deliver,
no different than a middlefield safety and I'm going to
go take a shot or against zero. Here's the one
to go do. And so you practice and you practice.
(13:44):
You may do it for three or four weeks and
never get the look, but when it comes, you gotta
go nail it.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
And I think also like it's just a great great
feel by Cliff in that moment to say, hey, we're
expecting man and these critical down and distances and great call,
great execution. Love to see when all comes together like that.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
Great answer just by the offense.
Speaker 4 (14:00):
Like you know, knowing when the chances come to go
nail it.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Yeah. The other play I want to talk about, Coach,
was this second reaction play to Zach Ertz down the
field where Marcus kind of breaks out to the offensive, right,
Zach's got this dig that he kind of breaks off
and runs up the field. Great connection and chemistry there
by those two and just you see the experience that
they both have.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
Yeah, and that's for sure on the Zach side knowing
what do I have?
Speaker 1 (14:21):
How can I work back to it?
Speaker 4 (14:23):
And so that's that didn't come in one week's time.
You know, that's been over many times. If I see this,
this is what we'll go do. And so not all
the tight ends have that right grace, you know, convert
on this thing. But he does because he knows it
and he'll go deliver.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
And the other thing I wanted to say it was
just Josh Connelly on that play. Aiden Hutchinson tough matchup,
just absolutely eats up that spin move. What have you
seen from him the past couple of weeks has developed
a lot.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
He has and this is a real competitor and so
there's gonna be highs, like that's part of like the
process and growing through it. Like he's got to be
in the fire, someme, he's got to go through it,
and like what kind of matchup do you want? Just
like that, you know with hutcheson to go battle for it,
chop spins, clubs inside, you know, stutter bull rushes, all
of it. And so he was really down for the challenge.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Coach Man, I love talking about you had asked a
million questions, but we got a roll.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
We got to get back to DC coach. We have
been that on matory all week.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Look like, well, one thing we know is that these
commanded fans.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
They travel and this fan rallies out here.
Speaker 5 (15:25):
They're coming across the country to watch.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
The Burgundy and Gold do what they do. See you
smile and coach coo means a lot.
Speaker 4 (15:31):
And uh we knew when this one got circled on
the calendar. People want to say, I want to get there,
I want to make it, I want to make a spot.
There's players, families, coaches, family organization. People want to come
and then to see you know, the Burgundion Gold already
around the city. You know, people giving a shout out
and you know, like just they're excited already, man to
(15:51):
be here and be a part of it. So for
this being the first game ever, you know, in the
NFL being played here in this city.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
And this country, Like, man, what's cooler than that?
Speaker 4 (16:01):
And so for us to take over that stadium, that's
even cooler because like, it ain't our home game, but
it's gonna feel.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
Like it absolutely.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
And so coach I think gonna say, is like, you know,
this fan base doesn't know football, pools that bringing this
to them and kind of showing them their first taste.
Speaker 4 (16:14):
Of football, Yeah it is. And even through the press, Hey,
this is what we do during the week. This is
a Wednesday, this is a Thursday, this's a Friday. For
a lot of the people, that's their first time seeing
the Commanders, and so we want to leave that impression
about how we play and what it looks like. And
so they just say, Okay, that's my team, that's my guy.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
Buildings of Life, command of Fans out here and Madrid coach,
thank you so much for taking the time. We know
you have a lot going on it. Submit their game
plan with Hey, coach dan Quinn loulding fouls and I'm
your host from Ryan Colbert.
Speaker 4 (16:43):
Let's take on
