In this episode, I'm joined by a friend of mine, Tise Karunwi. She's a loving wife, a mother to two handsome boys, and she's a nurse. We discuss the very important issue of black maternal mortality in the United States. According to the CDC, black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related issues than white women. This is partly why the maternal mortality rate in the U.S. is the worst in any industrialized country. We discussed the importance of having a birth plan and how to set one up, knowing your rights as a patient, her thoughts on the rise in popularity of black doulas and midwives, the necessary trainings that white healthcare professionals need to have to better deal with patients from different cultural backgrounds, among other topics.   **You can check out her Pregnancy to Delivery series on her YouTube Channel: Tise Kay (https://youtu.be/32c3y6vSZik) and follow her on Instagram: @tise_kay **  To our listeners, how was your birth experience like? Did you have a negative birth experience as a black mother that you think was based on any form of racial discrimination? What happened? What do you wish could have been done differently, or what would you do differently in a future pregnancy, or what would you recommend to any soon-to-be moms?   Leave us a voice message: anchor.fm/bldgafricasfuture/message  Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/buildingafricasfuture Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/buildingafricasfuture  Follow us on Instagram: @buildingafricasfuture  Contact us via email: buildingafricasfuture@gmail.com  Please subscribe and share with friends.
