dollars for hours and explodeyour business.
It's time to hit that fixedfigure and beyond.
Let's go.

(00:44):
Welcome entrepreneurs to theCreate Automate and Scale
Podcast.
I'm your host, sophie Riley, and I'm thrilled to guide you
through today's discussion, where we dive deep down into the
world of domain names.
Now, if you're a coach, acourse creator, a service
provider and you're looking toskyrocket your business, then

(01:06):
you're absolutely in the rightplace.
I also want to say that thispodcast is part of a series
where I teach you everythingthat I know about email
marketing and email delivery, sothat you can crush the changes
that are coming effectiveFebruary First, if you haven't
heard lots of changes happening, you don't know about them.
Make sure you tune in to thispodcast to learn all about it.

(01:30):
Be sure to check the show notes.
I do have a special place foryou to opt in and access all the
podcast episodes, how-to videos, resources and more about the
Google and Yahoo requirements.
I even have a place for you toask questions and get your
answers while you are startingto implement these changes.

(01:53):
All right, so let's getstraight to the point.
Choosing the perfect domain is acrucial step in establishing
your online presence, and todayI want to give you 10-ish things
to consider, just things tothink about, when you're
choosing your domain name.
So this is for you, all mybeautiful people who are still

(02:16):
sending from their Gmail theirYahoo account.
This is no longer somethingthat you are allowed to do as a
bulk sender in the marketingworld.
You will be blocked by Yahoo,by Google, so you don't want to
do that.
So this is your time.
This is your time to startshopping for a domain and create

(02:38):
your email that will go withyour domain.
For example, one of my domainis Sophie Rileyca.
If you don't know this, rightnow it's simply my name and I
choose what if at Sophie Rileyca?
And you could also go withsomething more traditional, such
as hello at Sophie Rileyca orsupport at Sophie Rileyca, and

(03:02):
if your domain name was not yourfirst and last name, you could
even say something like Sophieat Sophie Rileyca.
In my case it kind of sounds alittle let's go with repetitive
Like this just really loves hername.
There's tons of possibilities.
All right.
Now I want to touch on thebenefit, because right now you

(03:26):
might be like, oh, somethingelse, I have to spend money on
this, are you serious?
But there is so many benefit tohaving your own domain.
So this is like a small tangent, is something I'm really
passionate about.
Okay, often we hop onto all ofthese platforms and I'm going to
use Calendly for one examplebut you hop on all of these

(03:51):
platforms.
So, let's say, you go and youhop on Calendly and you start
sharing your calendar links.
You share a link for people tobook appointments on your
calendar, whether there's salescalls, coffee calls, whatever
calls that you have going on inyour business.
Now you've been an entrepreneurfor, let's say, a year or two

(04:13):
and you've dropped that link onhundreds of podcast interviews
and more and you want to changeto a platform that's more all
inclusive, like the VIP hub.
This is something that we gothrough almost daily.
People are switching over tothe VIP hub, but they don't want
to lose their original link.
However, they were sharing alink that is owned by a platform

(04:39):
like Calendly.
So Calendlycom slash, sophieRiley slash, I don't know, have
coffee with me.
So this link is everywhere.
By having your own domain andreally utilizing your domain and
the links that you create, you're able to never be stuck or

(05:02):
feel stuck in a platform.
So what I mean by that is thatyou get to create funnels
instead and link your domain tothat funnel, so you're sharing
links that you own.
So, let's say, you createeverything into the VIP Hub, but
instead of sharing the VIP Hublinks, you're going to create

(05:23):
everything with your own domain.
An example sophiereillyca slashcalendar.
Sophiereillyca slash.
Have copy with me.
If I was to create that in afunnel and I was to say, screw
this, I don't like this platform, want to change or my business
evolve.
I need more.
I need more than what thisplatform has to offer.

(05:44):
Or hey, this platform ischeaper because the VIP Hub has
some pretty epic prices, sidenote, anyways.
So by sharing those linksbecause you're sharing links
that you own with your domainyou will be able to recreate
those wherever you go.
This is the same for all of youpeople that are creating your

(06:10):
email and your email marketingsoftware, whether you're using
the VIP Hub, melch andConvertKit active campaign.
I don't care.
Stop writing emails directlyinto the platform.
Keep a document, stay organizedGoogle Drive, google Doc.
Write your emails so that ifyou create emails for a year,

(06:33):
two year, five year and you wantto change platform because that
platform no longer suits yourneed, you don't want to feel
like again you're stuck payingoverpriced monthly amounts
because your list is growing andyou don't want to be stuck
there because all your stats, all your emails, are there.

(06:54):
If you stay organized behindthe scene and keep everything in
separate folders and documents, you're never stuck in a
platform.
This was my little sidebar forthe day.
Okay, so choosing the rightdomain name is crucial.
There's a lot of things that wecan think about when we want to

(07:14):
do that.
A good domain name can makeyour site trustworthy, credible,
drive more traffic.
It's generally like your firstimpression.
It's the first thing thatpeople are going to notice when
they go on your website.
So let's talk about some thingsthat you get to think about.
First, there's the top leveldomain.

(07:35):
If you may have seen this, maybe in a blog post or online,
it's a TLD.
What this means it's the partof the domain that looks like
acomorgnet.
Those are some of the mostpopular ones, so let's break
them down.
Com refers as a commercial.

(07:57):
It is most commonly associatedwith businesses like Amazoncom,
gmailcom.
There's lots ofcoms out there.
We've seen times org.
Org stands for an organizationand it's typically a use for
non-profit.

(08:17):
Then there isnet.
Now this was initially used toindicate networking technologies
, but it's also associated withbusiness type as well.
So those would be your threemost popular.
Now you can also use other typesof website extensions, such

(08:38):
asioshopstore.
This is for you if you do havea store, if you do have a shop.
These could also be great.
And the last ones would be theones that are country related.
So, typically, if you have alocal business, you may want to

(08:59):
use the website extension foryour country.
You'll see that a lot of mydomains are sophierallyca.
I love that.
People just get to know thatI'm Canadian.
Okay, something else to thinkabout is to keep it simple and

(09:21):
Short.
Listen, word to mouth is agreat way to share website.
You'll find, especially as anentrepreneur, find yourself on
podcast interviews, summitinterviews and just places where
you get to network and you getthe opportunity.
You get that person that'sgonna say hey, sylvie, where can

(09:41):
people find you in the onlinespace?
Well, this is not the place andtime where you wanna drop this
27-letter website, because it'sgonna be hard to understand,
hard to remember and hard tospell.
Some common example of verysimple names that you may or may

(10:01):
not have never heard couldinclude, like Meida, zara, nike.
Those are companies that usevery short domain with four
letter words, so so easy toremember.
Remember that a domain nameshould stay under the 15

(10:23):
character if you want to makesure that it's not too long to
remember, less chances of typo, misspelling, auto-correct all of
these things happening, whichwould lead in traffic lost.
I feel like I should alsomention that you should avoid
double letters, numbers andcharacters as well.

(10:44):
Sometimes you know the domainthat we wanna use is already
taken and we just, hey, let mebe creative and add a whole
bunch of hearts to this.
It's typically not going towork when you're trying to share
this through word of mouth, especially like for me as
someone who is French.
I still don't know what any ofthe symbols are actually called.

(11:09):
If I was to like, try to spellsomething with a character, it'd
be like, let's say, word ofmouth.
I'd be like word tiny line oftiny line mouth, and then I
sometimes don't know what thingsare called and I see the French
word with an English accent andhope that it passes and listen.

(11:31):
I hope that you understand sortof what I'm trying to share
with you.
Is that simple is always better.
Something that you may wannaconsider are trademarks.
I wanna share a few placeswhere you can check for
trademark.
Typically registering a domainwith a trademark like you

(11:53):
wouldn't be able to do that, butjust in case, I'm gonna share a
website, the Trade ElectronicSearch System, as well as two
other name checker, but they'respelled weird.
I'm going to put that in thedescription of this podcast and
again, all of the websites, theresearch that I've done.

(12:15):
Anything that I'm mentioning isin a funnel page.
I'm putting everything togetherwhere it's an easy space to
find everything.
So make sure you opt in and getthat totally free.
So something that we could useto help us.
You know sort of brainstorm.
That domain is keywords, so akeyword that's related to your

(12:40):
niche, so something that'spassed the mind would be travel.
You know, if you're a travelagent, travel in your domain may
just be a brilliant idea.
I'm gonna share a Googlekeyword planner as well, in case
you wanna dabble in there, go,have some fun and do some
research and see what wouldrelate to your business,

(13:04):
estimate the search volume andgive you some performance
insights on those specifickeywords.
All right, something else thatyou may wanna think about is
consistency.
So what I mean by that is thatwe are several places in the

(13:24):
online space.
Right, we have a website, somefunnels, and maybe you're on
social media YouTube, pinterest, tiktok, instagram, linkedin, f,
facebook.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but you get the point.
But using consistent brandingwith our domain is key to sort
of make our business all feelattached, unified.

(13:48):
So you could find me on Google, sophiereillyca, and then you'll
see also my Instagram, myTikTok, my Facebook all using
that name.
So it's really, really easy tofind me and my business.
Okay, if you are like me, youknow when you go on ADHD rabbit

(14:08):
hole and you do a whole lot morethan you should.
This is the place of thepodcast where we've gone over.
I don't know what we should do,but I have some extra tips for
you.
So think about checking thedomain history, okay.
So this is yeah, this isSophie's little fear Like what
if somebody was using thiswebsite, this domain, and they

(14:32):
were into some shady stuff,right?
So the first thing thatchecking the domain history
could give you is competitiveresearch.
So the history may includeinformation on whether the
domain was used for a websitethat's related to your niche
niche niche niche we may have tohave this discussion too, so

(14:54):
registering it may help your SEOstrategy.
Now the security the domainhistory helps identify past
cyber attacks could be important.
I'm kind of a nerd.
Now, potential branding issue ifthe previous rent sites owners

(15:15):
ran some shady stuff in theirbusiness, maybe you want to
avoid this.
Like, did the shady stuff givethem the domain a bad reputation
?
That's important to know.
There's a lot of new thingsthat are coming up into the
marketing world bot, long storeshorts.

(15:35):
Any domain that use a black hatSEO can get a Google penalty.
So these are the things thatyou want to know.
So I'm going to, of course, give you the resources that you
need to check that.
We recommend using online toolslike Wayback Machine, who is
request and domain tool toinvestigate the domain ownership

(16:00):
history of these sites.
I mean, it's exciting.
I'm giving you a lot ofinformation, but all of the
website that you need to do aquick, quick search.
So hopefully this is reallyreally helpful for you.
Now you could always, now youcould also use a domain name

(16:21):
generator.
Listen, there is nothing likebrainstorming a name for a
domain, a course, an event Itypically need like a little
mimosa, otherwise I overthinkeverything.
But this is so much fun.
But I also understand that itcan be overwhelming and not
knowing which one to pick, and Iknow that it can be time

(16:43):
consuming.
So in many cases, the desiredterms are already registered or
trademark, so maybe you want touse a domain name generator.
It's an excellent solution forfinding great domain names,
ideas and sort of alternative towhat your original thoughts
were, and of course, many areavailable, including host singer

(17:08):
, domain checker, look-on domaintype and name boy.
I'm going to give you all thelinks below, so don't stress Now
.
I feel like this was a lot ofinformation, but hopefully this
is giving you some insights and, most importantly, you can see
the possibilities.

(17:30):
After saying all this, I alsowant to say that, if this is
overwhelming, getting a domainwith your internet first and
last name is such an amazingplace to start, especially like,
let's say, like me, your SophieRiley all over the internet,
getting a Sophie Riley dot ca,especially if your coach is such

(17:51):
an amazing, amazing place tostart.
Now it's time to go andpurchase that domain.
My personal favorite place tobuy domain, where I bought all
my domain and what is mostfamiliar to me is name cheap.
But there's definitely a lot ofplaces where you can purchase
domain.
I suggest just doing a quicksearch and see what is better

(18:14):
for you.
So it's time to get your domainand join me in the next episode
where we dive into your currentemail score and what you have
to do to not only authenticateyour email, the raw email
delivery, no matter what yourlist is, whether it's small, it
big, I got you covered.
