On this episode of Creative Space, we discuss the importance of patience in creativity and in life. It’s something I’ve struggled with a lot and continue to struggle with. I hope that what I’ve learned so far can help you find the patience to keep going and enjoy the journey more than the destination.

Jennifer Logue (00:11):
Hello everyone and welcome to another episode
of creative space, a Podcastwhere we explore, learn and grow
and creativity together. I'myour host Jennifer Logue. And
today, we're going to talk aboutthe importance of patience. I am
not going to sugarcoat it, thelast six months for me have been

(00:34):
tough, tough. But over and overagain, I keep hearing the same
message, be patient, which canbe so hard to do, especially in
this fast paced social, mediacrazed world of ours. We see the
highlight reels of our friends, family, people we admire. But

(00:57):
most of the time, we don't seethe day to day struggles, the
challenges, the sacrifices thatwere required to get there. When
we're going through challengingsituations, professionally,
personally, emotionally,physically, spiritually, or all
of the above, it's easy to justthrow in the towel, to give up

(01:19):
on our dreams, to abandon goals,to look for another job to end
relationship. And whilesometimes this is the right
thing to do, looking at my ownexperiences so far in this life,
tremendous, tremendous growthhas come from walking through
the fire to the other side. Andthe key ingredient to getting to

(01:42):
the other side, patience, because when you're going
through challenges, you're goingto feel like you're falling
behind and not making progress, especially when you're
constantly reminded about allthe cool things other people are
doing and achieving. But youcan't let this distract you from

(02:03):
your path and your purpose, youhave to realize that the
challenges are part of theprocess, and a vital part of
your growth. With every stepforward, even when it's hard,
you are getting a little bitstronger, a little bit wiser, a
little more skilled, a littlemore resilient, a little more

(02:24):
compassionate. And, dare I say,a little more, okay, with
patients in general. Beingpatient also helps us trust
more, you have to faith thatthings are going to get better,
that you're getting better, andlet that fill you. Because when
you have that kind of faith andtrust, putting the monkey brain

(02:47):
aside, you are making space forbeautiful things to happen. I'm
actually amazed right now, because one area of my life that
has been incredibly Rocky isstarting to come down. And some
incredible seeds that wereplanted six months ago, are now

(03:08):
blossoming beyond my wildestexpectations. But had I thrown
in the towel, had I quit whenthe fire got too hot. When
everyone else told me to walkaway, I would have missed out
not just on the opportunity. Butthe more important thing, the
growth, when he walked throughfire, you're uncomfortable at

(03:29):
first, because all of your weakspots come rushing to the
surface. But inevitably, yourskin gets thicker, and you are
better and more prepared forwhat's next. On the other hand,
when you walk away from thefire, you avoid pain, but you
also avoid growth.
Interestingly, I've noticed whenI've walked away from the fire

(03:51):
in my own life, I keepencountering a similar challenge
over and over again. As I'mgetting older, and hopefully
wiser, I'm beginning torecognize that every challenge
is actually here to teach mesomething. And I'm gradually
getting better at embracingthese challenges. Gradually,
this willingness to walk throughthe fire and work through

(04:16):
problems, putting in the workeven when you're exhausted. Even
when you have no motivation. Thepeople that do this, the ones
that persevere powered bypatients. They're the ones that
win. They're the ones whograbbed the brass ring. So what
does this have to do withcreativity? Everything. First of

(04:38):
all, developing your gift takestime, whatever it is. Sure, you
may have some natural ability, but you become great. You need
to take the foot off of the gasand be patient with the process.
It's not always going to be fun.

(05:00):
It's not always going to beglamorous, it's going to take
sacrifice because you've onlygot so many hours in the day.
But when you have the virtue ofpatience, and its sister
contentment, you have everythingyou need to make the most of
whatever your gift is. Secondly,we go off course without

(05:21):
patience, I get it, I really, really, really get it. We all
have bills to pay, and needmoney to survive. So as we're
developing our gifts, there'sthis tendency, not for all of
us, but for some of us to tryand make things happen in our
own strength. Rather thanallowing our gift to make a path

(05:43):
for us, we get distracted byshort term rewards. Maybe it's a
bigger paycheck, maybe it'sputting too much focus on
building a social mediapresence. And we deprioritize
the nurturing and love of ourgift for what it is, we lose the
joy of the process of presenceof appreciation of where we are

(06:06):
right now, right here. We try totake shortcuts. And we end up
holding ourselves back, repeating the same mistakes,
because we're not givingourselves the opportunity to
grow when things get hard.
Thirdly, and this is the worstof all, but without patience, we
quit. Creating anything takespatience, and refining something

(06:29):
to be the best it can be takeseven more patience. We cannot
control the results of what wedo. We can only control our
actions and our attitude. Butwhen we just throw in the towel,
the journey ends. There's aquote from Confucius. It doesn't
matter how slowly you go, aslong as you do not stop. Just

(06:52):
keep going. Don't stop. Inreading this episode, I stumbled
upon a few other quotes aboutthe virtue of patience, that I
want to leave you with. A quotefrom Gandhi. To lose patience is
to lose the battle. From thephilosopher John Jacques

(07:13):
Rousseau. Patience is better, but it's fruit is sweet. From
the Bible, Let us not becomeweary in doing good for at the
proper time we will reap aharvest if we do not give up.
And patience leads to abundantunderstanding. But impatience

(07:39):
leads to stupid mistakes.
Impatience leads to stupidmistakes. Yep, that one is from
Proverbs, quite the gem, anotherone to put on my wall. On that
note, whatever you're patientlyworking towards in life, I
commend you. And if you'reanxious for something to happen,

(08:03):
to see some sort of results toachieve the next milestone,
relax. You've already come sofar. Enjoy the ride. Enjoy the
challenges and the beauty ofgrowth at every step of the
process. My name is JenniferLogue and thank you for
listening to this episode ofcreative space. Until next time,
