There's a reason running backs have the shortest "life span" in the NFL: the position is brutal on the body. When they get the ball, they either to try to run through massively built men or cut to one side or the other and make them miss. The hits take a toll and the cuts are knee killers. But when running backs are healthy, they can be special. Colorado native Kevin McDougal was special. When the ball was handed to him at Arvada West or Colorado State University, you knew a gain was coming, usually a big one. He set records and won awards in college, like the 1999 Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

He decided to make a go at the next level after going undrafted and made the 53 man roster with the Colts for two years. Then he got cut. He tried the Canadian Football League and lasted 2 months due to injury. On the long drive back from Montreal, Kevin was honest with himself and decided to hang up his cleats.

After his playing days, he worked in oil & gas and went through a few jobs with the up and down cycle of that industry. Today, Kevin and his wife Holli are Team McDougal Realtors with RE/MAX Advanced in Fort Collins.

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Rewarded for bravery that goes above and beyond the call of duty, the Medal of Honor is the United States’ top military decoration. The stories we tell are about the heroes who have distinguished themselves by acts of heroism and courage that have saved lives. From Judith Resnik, the second woman in space, to Daniel Daly, one of only 19 people to have received the Medal of Honor twice, these are stories about those who have done the improbable and unexpected, who have sacrificed something in the name of something much bigger than themselves. Every Wednesday on Medal of Honor, uncover what their experiences tell us about the nature of sacrifice, why people put their lives in danger for others, and what happens after you’ve become a hero. Special thanks to series creator Dan McGinn, to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Adam Plumpton. Medal of Honor begins on May 28.
