Welcome back to DadDimes on the Rocks!

đŸŽ™ïž DadDimes on the Rocks – Special Holiday Pour
Episode: “Chillin’ & Sippin’: Jim Beam Winter Reserve Review” with our good friend Chris Avent

🧊 The Setup: What Is Winter Reserve?

  • Name / Expression: Jim Beam Winter Reserve Bourbon Whiskey (Limited / Seasonal Release)
  • Age / Finish: Aged 6 years, then finished in two toasted barrels after initial maturation.
  • Proof / ABV: 86 proof (43% ABV)
  • Mash Bill: Same as Jim Beam standard (approx. 75% corn, 13% rye, 12% barley) per Jim Beam marketing.
  • Positioning: Marketed as a “winter / holiday” pour—think of it as the cozy, toast-and-spice version of Jim Beam.
  • Price & Availability: Meant to be affordable; MSRP ~$24.99 in many markets.

đŸ„ƒ Tasting Notes & Experience

Here’s how I’d break it down in typical DadDimes fashion:

Nose
First waft of the glass gives you vanilla, toasted oak, light cinnamon, and subtle baking spice. There’s also a hint of clove and some toasted marshmallow or “toast” character from the barrel finishing.

Palate

  • The sip is warm, sweet, and a bit spiced. Vanilla is strong; cinnamon and baking spices lean in.
  • The toasted barrel finish adds toasty oak, gentle char, and a nutty edge.
  • Some reviewers note the body can feel a bit thin or light, especially mid-palate.

Finish

  • Medium in length. The oak, spice, and warmth linger, though the sweetness (vanilla, cinnamon) recedes.
  • Some bitterness or tannic oak creep in late, especially in more aggressive barrel finishes.

🗣 Other Viewpoints & Critiques

  • Bourbon Guy praises it as “super sweet with lots of baking spice
 absolutely delicious” for the price.
  • The Whiskey Ramble offers a more critical take: “thin and slightly metallic” on the palate, with bitter nuttiness and odd spice notes.
  • On Reddit, a user describes: strong oak, cinnamon, leather notes; well priced but “flavors fall a bit flat.”
  • Castle & Cairn frames it as a sipping concept, highlighting toasted oak, vanilla, cinnamon, and cloves, but noting its lighter nature and the need to appreciate what the finish brings rather than expecting heavy backbone.
  • Bourbon Bossman notes the specs on the Bottle: 6 years, toasted barrel finish. He found vanilla, baking spice, clove, and a warm finish.

So opinions are mixed: many like what the bourbon attempts, but some feel it doesn’t hit hard in depth or consistency.

✅ DadDimes Verdict

Rating: 3.75 / 5

Strengths

  • Seasonal charm: It embodies a “winter / fireside” profile nicely—vanilla, cinnamon, oak toast.
  • Value: For a limited release with finishing, its low price point is competitive.
  • Drinkability: Even at 86 proof, it’s approachable enough for casual sipping, especially in holiday settings.

Weaknesses

  • It sometimes feels thin in the mid-palate, lacking in body or weight.
  • The finish can wane; some oak bitterness or drying elements appear in weaker spots.
  • As a “toasted finish” release, the benefits of the finish versus char can be subtle and uneven.

When to Enjoy It

  • Neat in a cozy setting (fireside, winter nights)
  • With a large ice cube to soften edges and bring up sweetness
  • In a holiday cocktail (Old Fashioned with a cinnamon twist, or hot toddy)

🎁 Final Thoughts

Jim Beam Winter Reserve is a bold move by Beam to offer a seasonal, finished bourbon at a wallet-friendly price. It doesn’t surpass its higher-proof peers in complexity or heft, but it delivers on its emotional and thematic promise: warm, spiced, toasted, and festive. For what it is—especially at under $30—it’s a solid addition to your winter bottle shelf.

If you see one on the shelf, snag it and let it sit in your glass awhile—you may find more nuance emerges over time (or with a splash of water). That’s my take. Cheers, and happy sipping through the winter months! đŸ„ƒâ„ïž

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant.
