Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (00:18):
All right everyone.
Welcome to another episode ofDavid's Saturday Night.
Sit back tonight I have onAustin's best barber Phillip
Winfrey.

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (00:29):
Winfrey.
How's it going?
Everybody?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (00:31):
Um, Phillip is out here normally
Chop and mops.
His favorite style is to for youto just to show up and say, do
whatever you want.
He promises that he's gonna makeyou look good, but it's not
another day in, in Paradise,Phil.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (00:47):
Film.
All my, all my sayings down.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (00:49):
I do

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (00:50):
You only gotta sit in the shop for
one day to here, here to figureit out.
And then the only other one that I,
I liked, uh, well, I liked a lotof the things that you said in
your post, but there is onewhere you said you give I wrote
it down.
I did not.
You give, uh, you give goodhaircuts while telling bad
jokes.
So I expect a minimum of threebad jokes before this episode is
over.

(01:10):
No, no pressure, but you'regonna have to come up with some,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:15):
with, it's going pretty naturally too,
so it shouldn't be a problem.
Cool.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:18):
your day going so far?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:20):
Good.
Just another busy day.
Everybody's busy at the shop.
Quick.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:26):
We got 148 days until

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (01:31):
Getting married, I think.
Cause I was just gonna say,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:35):
you better know this one.
Yep.
That's it.
Uh, are you excited, nervous?
Is it all, all the feelings?
How, how do you feel about that?
I'm just excited for now.
I think the nerves will probablyhit me as it gets close.
You know, getting close to theday.
I know it's gonna go well.
We were, I was just on the phonewith Sabrina before this, uh,
about DJ stuff.

(01:56):
We're wrapping up some of thefiner details.
Planning.
Uh, I guess we just coast in.
I don't know.
I don't really know what toexpect to take in one day at a
time.
off the top of your head, do you
know how many people are showingup?
Give or two?
Give
Uh, 1 25.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:12):
Ooh, that's a big wedding.
Yeah.
Mostly friends, family.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (02:16):
a little bit of both.
Little

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:18):
Good.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (02:19):
bit for doing it up Northern
Illinois, where we're from.
So we got a good amount offriends and family up there.
Both of us.
A couple people
How long you been in Austin for?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:31):
from, um, we've lived here three
separate times, but this timearound, uh, seven years.
Right?
About seven years

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:43):
Sweet.
Why Austin?
How'd you decide to to come outthis

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (02:47):
Uh, my older sister moved out here
first.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:49):
way?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (02:49):
She got married out here and, uh,
moved out here.
We'd come visit and, um, Ialways loved it.
Really.
Uh, it was because my parentsgot split up and, and, uh, my
mom moved out here with me andmy siblings and that was the
first time I moved out here andthey all kind of stayed and
ended up moving back toIllinois, moved back here again,

(03:13):
move back to Illinois, and thenthis is the third time around,
but they've all been here, so,so I guess to be closer to
family and better place for abarber.
Not a lot of great barbers outhere.
There's a lot of people thatcare about their appearance, so
it's been good.
It's been good to me.
How do you find out this knowledge
that Austin, that's so specificthat there's not a lot of great

(03:34):
barbers, but there are a

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (03:36):
a lot of

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (03:36):
people who care about the hair, the
beard

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (03:39):
Um, that's something I kind of just
figured out after I moved here.
Not necessarily the reason Imoved here, but I figured it out
after I moved here.
That that is the case.
Yeah.
Um,
mix of like luck and timing?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (03:51):
out.
Yeah.
Yeah, it worked out.
It worked out really well.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Austin's a good looking city.
You know, like a lot of peoplethat care about their health,
physical wellbeing and theirimage, whether it's because of
what they do or that's theirpersonality, it really is.
So being somebody that can helppeople get that image that they
want.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (04:12):
One thing I have noticed, and this
is a knock on my whole thing, but my gym is filled with
teenagers and these kids are,are big and they're strong.
And I was, I've been curious, that's, is that an Austin thing?
Was it a Sacramento thing thatteenagers were just too busy?

(04:34):
when I was a teenager, I was,did some sports, played a lot of
video games.
I couldn't give a rat's assabout the gym.
And some of these kids, they'reso big, I don't take them as 16
year olds.
You know, I'll be inconversation with one of them
talking about technique and thenhe'll mention school and I'll
say, oh, where do you go tocollege?

(04:55):
And he's like, oh no, I go tothe high school down the street.
wait a second, you're 200pounds.
How old are you?
And he's, I'm, I'm 16.
Like,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (05:05):
Yeah.
No, I've, I've noticed that too.
Like, kids are getting big and Ithink that is a, I think that
social media's a big driver inthat and, and that they're being
exposed to, I don't know, fitness, uh, pages and whatnot,
and they're kind of likeaspiring to be that way more so
than as kids.
I didn't look up to anybody.
I mean, like, guess I likedathletes, but I'm following
fitness pages, things like that.

(05:27):
They just wasn't around.
So I feel like these kids arelooking up to that.
And then being in Austin, like Isaid, it's just a city where a
lot of people are in shape andgood looking.
So kids see that and, and theywanna live up to it.
So I'd say, I say good on themfor getting started early.
I mean, I would've.
Taking, lifting more seriouslyas

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (05:46):
I do too, because I think that I
probably would be overall bettershape if I had started younger
cuz it'd be so easy to, it'seasier to fix something that's
not broken than to fix somethingthat is, that, that makes any,
you know what I'm saying though?
Like, if you start working outwhen you're 30, maybe your

(06:07):
elbows are starting to ache oryour knees are starting to hurt,
or you already have a gut orwhatever the thing is, right?
But if you start out when you'revery, very young and you're, you
haven't had enough time todamage your body through either
injuries, drinking, drugs, whatever the, the thing is, you
know, like you're in the primecondition to just,
A hundred percent.
Yeah.
I'm, I'm fighting that right nowwith stretching.

(06:28):
Especially my strings so tightthat, and I never took that
seriously as a kid.
Never stretched, wish Iwould've.
Now I'm fighting it the wrongend of it.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (06:43):
are you hamstring sight cuz you're
standing all day or.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (06:46):
tight.
I just think they've always beenthat way.
I remember even as a kid in likegym class, you do the, you do
the test days, right?
And pushup test, I'm, I wasgreat.
The pacer where you're runningback and forth no problem.
But the one where you sit andread probably cuz I played a all

(07:06):
day girl park or.
Never warmed up, never cooleddown.
We just ran into

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (07:12):
Hell yeah.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (07:13):
it.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (07:14):
That's the man thing to do.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (07:15):
I guess.
So don't stretch.
Just

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (07:17):
guess.
Just go,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (07:18):
But uh, I mean, like to me, I gotta
blame like, I guess my dad andlike my coaches for not sizing
that.
Yeah.
I really looked out,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (07:33):
here's

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (07:34):
a, a

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (07:35):
quick testament to stretching cuz I'm
not a stretcher either.
I, had a sore foot for a whileand at first I was from a, it,
it flared up when I was at anall day music festival.
And so I ignored it for a coupleof months and then after it'd
been a couple months, I was outwith some friends and I
mentioned it to them and theywere like, it's still hurting.
That was back in September.

(07:56):
Like go get it scanned.
It's probably broken.
You can get a boot on it.
Wear the boot for two weeks.
Pain's gone forever.
You're back to normal.
Turns out they did a scan, nothing was fractured.
They told me something that waseven worse, which was you have
plantar fascitis.
So have you heard of that?
Which yeah, a bowls player.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (08:23):
So get this and my, maybe mine was
a mild case, I'm not sure.
But I went to one doctor and shewanted to prescribe me a
prescription.
Couldn't tell you which one.
Um, I went to h heb, I got it.
It's on my counter.
I took a couple pills, threw therest out.
Went to a different doctorhoping he could refer me to like
a physical therapist orsomething.
He prescribed me a strongerpill.

(08:44):
He was like, try taking thisback sheet.
Take it for two weeks and thencome back and we'll reassess.
I never even picked that one up.
I've never been, even like whenI'm hungover, I'm that kind of
person that for whatever reason,I won't even take ibuprofen.
I, I don't, don't ask me why.
I just, I just don't, forwhatever reason, I'd rather
hydrate and power through.

(09:05):
So I got someone else's opinionand he said, stretch.
He gave me a list of stretchesand said, do these stretches for
a minimum 30 seconds, both yourlegs, even the one that doesn't
hurt, and do it three times aday.
And I've been doing that now forabout 30 days.
And the pain is going down to apoint where, like today, I
barely noticed it.
So I went from like, whatever,October

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (09:26):
through.
February 1st was, and like, like getting
outta bed limping.
And now I'm walking.
Almost all I did was 10 ishminutes of stretching throughout
the day.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (09:40):
one.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (09:40):
So one is just when you, like, when
you just, they're all calfstretches.
So one is,

Microphone (Scarlett (09:45):
stretches.
Y'all lean on the cat.
The other one dare.
Or even

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (09:59):
a,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (10:01):
a wall.
Yeah.
Oh yeah.
Third one

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (10:04):
is you grab a towel and you're
sitting down back up against awall.
Ideally, you throw a towel overyour foot and then you just
pull.
And so I just hold these threemovements for about a minute
each, three times a day.
That's it.
And that's what I was lookingfor.
I wasn't looking for twodifferent doctors to prescribe
me a pill.
I was looking for someone to belike, go do this thing.

(10:25):
And I'm really glad I found thatperson.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (10:29):
person.
That's medical care to me.
Right now's pill for it.
Hard to find the guy that'sproblems s doctor that relaxers

(10:59):
and go down this path.
So yeah, I think he actuallymight have been a chiropractor
that started doing these

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (11:19):
Roy.
back for it.
So, so, um, if I've beenfighting,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (11:29):
I remember last summer I went to
my brother's place in Salem,Oregon, and I played basketball
with my nephews, and we onlyplayed for about 45 minutes, but
I didn't played ball in over adecade

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (11:43):
about,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (11:44):
were playing on cement, you know, so
my old ass legs, the nextmorning I wake up and I go to
get outta my bed, and my shinfire is so bad.
I'm like, that's one of thosemoments in my mid thirties where
I

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (11:59):
my

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (12:00):
I really am aging.
Like

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (12:01):
aging

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (12:02):
I played basketball for 40 minutes
and now I'm begging my brotherto walk my dog.
It's terrible.
Oh,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (12:10):
yeah, I play, I love basketball.
I play a couple times a weedback pain for before I play.
Try to do it after I play aswell.
Having football, uh, growing.
So

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (12:39):
how, uh, how old are you?
But at the same time, it is whatit is.
24, 34, 44, like

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (12:52):
stretch it all growing up, you know.
So I feel like an.
Know, guys, gimme shit.
Pull up early and I'm stretching

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (13:10):
no one's too

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (13:12):
like say, but there's like this, uh,
I don't see a lot of peopledoing

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (13:30):
young.
We had a, uh, personal traineron a few episodes ago that SP
does a lot of, uh, training withhigh school athletes.
And even he said that hissometimes hope, I don't misquote
it, but he essentially said thatsometimes his biggest problem is
like getting the parents buy-in.
Cuz you'll have the dad whowants heavy squat, heavy bench

(13:52):
press.
But if you're playing football, especially depending on the
position or soccer orbasketball, whatever the sport
is, is having a extremely heavybench press actually do for you.
And so I think you're right thatthere is a stigma that.
Skies should be doing Leeslifts.
Girls should be doing Leeslifts.
For me, one of my favorite daysof the week is league day, and

(14:15):
I'll do any workout.
So I do all the, the girlworkouts and I'll be doing like
the abductors, the abductors,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (14:21):
of the the glute bridges where

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (14:22):
you put the bar on your waist, lean
up against a bench, and youknow, do the thrust.
Um, and some of my buddies, andthey're not being malicious,
they're just, they're justpoking fun because that's what
your guy friends do.
But they'll just be like, whatthe fuck are you doing, man?
I'm like, yeah, my legs arebigger than you.
Stronger than you.
So,

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (14:37):
fucking, where did that come from though?
I totally agree.
That's what I remember.
Like the gave us for everysport, squats, deadlifts, out,
and days when I go to the gym,or at least for a long time,
that's all I knew.
Power Lifter gave me a littlerude squat.

(15:00):
There's no feels strong.
I feel good.
It was, some of it was like hamscurl, other things that I wasn't
doing.
Going down a

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (15:44):
Could be that a lot of the fitness
following could person, their, Idon't know, I can't fitness
people.
That's a very, very broadgeneralization, but
poor.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (15:57):
Um,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (16:20):
I think maybe you just
I do know when I think back when I
was in high school, and thispartly could be because I had a
hard time making friends, but alot of my decisions too, based

(16:42):
on like cool, like, oh, openlyin this.
So I wonder how much of that isintuitive as well, like, of
just, well, all the other guysor, or even for ladies, you
know, anyone, anyone.
Like, this is what everyone isdoing, so this is how I'm gonna
dress, this is how I'm gonnalift.
Peer pressure was huge as a kid,you know, even now, every now

(17:03):
and then I'll see myself comingto it.
I'm grateful to say like, it'sdefinitely significantly less
now than when I was a teenager, but you do.
Every now and then I'll do, I'llhave that thought of like, what
will Phil think about me if I dothis on the podcast or whatever
the thing is.
And I think, actually, let mereframe it this way.
The thoughts are still there.
I just don't act on them as muchand I've learned to realize that

(17:26):
I need to do what is either bestfor my health or I'm gonna start
the podcast regardless of ifsomeone thinks terrible idea or
what, whatever it is.
You know, I just try, thosethoughts have a significantly
left influence

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (17:47):
thoughts plates over

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (17:51):
and yeah,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (17:51):
there.
You gotta be honest withyourself.
You can't lie to yourself in thegym.
Kind of a, a dark and there'sput more weight on, but buddy
doing, especially when you're akid, your buddy's doing play.

(18:11):
You can't go take that weightoff and put 20 fives on.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (18:14):
that's,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (18:16):
that's how, at least that's where my
head was at.
It's like, no, I'm, I gotta dothe same weight.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (18:21):
There's this one buddy who, uh, uh, his
name's Jesse.
He lives back home in Sacramentoand we worked out together quite
often and he was one of myfavorite people to work out with
because we were almost equalstrength on everything.
And so in that case, I alwayspushed myself a little bit
harder with him because withhim, cuz if he was doing 40
pound girls, you know, I'm like,I know I can do those just about

(18:44):
equal.
So I do think that makes thebest workout partner is if you
happen to be able to findsomeone with similar strength if
you like even working out withpeople.
Some people I know prefer towork out alone.
Um, but I just always knew, like, I like working out with
him.
I would push myself a a littlebit more because I knew I was
holding

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (19:06):
him.
I've gotten older.
I like four or five of

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (19:17):
myself 10.
Speaking of teenagers, yougraduated high school and then

(19:38):
what did sort of life look likebetween after that, you know,
did you ever, did you ever go tocollege?
And I'm sort of curious like howyou got into your profession.

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (19:50):
college?
Like I never.
I also had all my friends.

(20:19):
Car was already packed towardside I, I started.

(20:47):
It's good for me, even thoughI'd never, well, I was going to
school a lot of times.

(21:15):
I sort of like close to myassociate of town one.

(21:37):
Helped me to, I called Ruffler, put out a lot of good bar, blow

(22:00):
up for like, that was me.
There was

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (22:07):
That would've been nice to know.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (22:08):
was like, man, that, that was a big,
that was a big letdown.
Sad about that.
I will say I was also, I was allsort of hesitant of my back out
here again.

(22:30):
Broke up half was already kindone foot out, hesitant and once
found, I was a year and a halfbarber school.
It was a car that my every sentPedro shut down.

(23:21):
Even, even though when I firststarted, there's only over,

(23:57):
You mentioned, mentioned some trial
and error.
Was there a uh, or two cuts.
Awful.

Microphone (Scarlett (24:07):
definitely one that stands out.
Was this the one, did we talkabout this?
Yeah, I think I,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (24:11):
I think we did.
Obviously we were running on micthough, but if, yeah, tell me.
Tell, say it.
Tell us again.
I love the story because I guess
the, and the green on top, butyeah, so it was like my first,
first Saturday on the floor iswhat they call it, and that's
cotton hair.
They run it like a barbershop, isn't it?
We're in a mall.

(24:31):
Mall's busiest on Saturday, sothat's when we got the.
Cutting hair and walk up and yousay running like a barbershop,
so get real life experience.
I was not ready for acquired itof you.

(24:55):
Maybe that's a good thing, likehe's gotta do this cuz do it.
Even tell more of scissor workall over and never done

(25:28):
anything.
Everything I'd done to thatpoint was like all Clippers,
instructor, he wasn't aninstructor.
He's no help.
I called him over one pointduring that cut as I could do.

(26:00):
Blow up on me.
Cool about it.
I was harder for the cut.
I felt really bad about it andwork, which is fair enough.

(26:34):
Like she had a hat on and uh,again, she was cool.
We didn't even, I didn't even,like, we didn't make eye
contact.
We just

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (26:43):
didn't even make eye contact.

Microphone (Scarlett (26:44):
Pretended like it, we just pretended like
it never happened.
I guess like that's, that's whatI remember.
It was just like, hey going, they're like, Hey right over
here.
And I never walked back over bythat section.
Like, you never came back toschool either.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (27:03):
That's funny,
that's really the only haircut I can
look back on and say, you couldlook back on any haircut I've
ever done and sick.
Cause it's better.
That better.
But it wasn't ready for that.
I all, I don't sell.
Looking back on it,
right?
You were there.

(27:24):
She was, there is the wrong

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (27:26):
part of the journey.
It wasn't big

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (27:27):
to either of you that day.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (27:29):
day.
That's right.
But, um, no, that's awesome.
Thank you for sharing that.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (27:34):
Thank you.
Looking

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (27:35):
back on it, you know, now that you're
seven years into it, um, let'ssay you have the opportunity to
talk to like a 18 year old in,in a coffee shop, then this
scene is torn.
You know, they're like, well, all my friends are going to
school.
Like, going back to that again, like, this is what everyone else
is doing.
Um, you know, maybe I wannastart a business, but I have no
idea what I'm passionate about.
Or, you know, I just, uh, maybeI want to join the military.

(27:59):
And they're just thinking oflike, what direction should I
go?
I just feel like college isn'tthe, the thing for me.
Or, or maybe they're fine withgoing to college, but they just
have no idea what they want todo.
Business major, should I bemedical?
So now that you're 29 and you'vefound a job that you're in love
with, what you know, if you hadfive minutes to talk to someone

(28:19):
in that situation, what do youthink you would tell'em?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (28:24):
20, you really have no, some people

(28:47):
are like, what they're gonna dowithout at that young age.
Have gone down with path, likeeverybody knows people that have

(29:09):
gone down the path party

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (29:18):
Right, not

Microphone (Scarle (29:19):
successfully on

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (29:31):
safe.
I think there's something to besaid too for, and, and if you
disagree with this, please like, push back.
I, I, I'd love to hear, but Isometimes think like you, you
have to jump through some andeventually you will find what
you're passionate about andwhat, what I mean by that, let
me make it more concrete, is inmy life experience, all everyone

(29:52):
was going to college.
So for no reason except forthat, I said, fuck that.
I.

Microphone (Scarlett (29:56):
experience

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (29:57):
years later, I ended up going, I went
to school, got my degree inaccounting, did accounting for
two and a half years, hated it.
I was bored outta my mind.
So I left the industry to becomea recruiter.
Fast forward another four years,I'm now starting this podcast
and like we talked about beforewe started recording, it would
make I, I feel like I'd beliving a dream if 18 months from

(30:20):
now I was giving my boss a twoweeks.
But I also don't think I shouldhave started this podcast any
early.
I think in my twenties I was tooimmature.
I think I was playing a victim.
I think that I needed to figureout a lot of things about
myself.
And if I'd started this a coupleyears ago, I would be using this

(30:40):
platform to sort of say, whoa isme.
And to get attention and to tryto get people to feel bad for
me.
So I feel like life sort ofhelped get me to my destination
in the time it should.
And so I like your advice thatif you really don't know what
you should do, you know, maybejust, just stay busy and make
sure you're doing something.
Don't stay stagnant, you know?
But do do something and, andfigure it out.

(31:01):
And eventually life will workitself out and you'll find,
you'll find that job that makes.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (31:11):
that change.
Good.
Those things you said about whyyou started it now, but I have
known about your path.
Oh.
Sort of hard to explain all thatto a young kid, right?

(31:34):
Right.
10 years ago to them, they wereyears old, right.
Um, that you just said, oh,because all my buddies are going
to.
Tend to think that life probablywon't best I

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (32:43):
And I don't, what, what's funny too
is I don't have any regretsabout going to school.
Like if this podcast takes offthose four years of studying
accounting.
The courses never did any, butthe people I met, the financial
mistakes I made, all of thatcontributed to developing my

(33:03):
soft skills so that I could dothis.
So even that time, like on thesurface, someone might look at
that and be like, oh man, isn'tthat bummer that you went to
school for four years andstudied accounting when now
you're running a podcast aboutbusiness, fitness and culture
and like accounting has nothingto do with it and you're never
gonna talk about it.
And I'd say, no.

(33:23):
You know, it, it was, I learnedso much about myself during
those four years and, and again,I'm not saying everyone should
go to, should go to college.
One of the guests that I had on,um, was a 20 year old who
dropped outta college, juststarted his own business and
he's rushing it.
So I think to your point, it'sreally good to just try to be as

(33:43):
self-aware as possible.
And I forget if we were on micor not yet, but being honest
with yourself.
I think that Caden is probablyvery honest about his abilities
and he had good reason to dropoutta school.
He wasn't dropping out because Ihave a rebellious act against
his parents or something likethat.
It was, he had a dream and avision and a, a way to execute

(34:03):
it and he acted on it and nowit's paying off.
So, I didn't even think aboutthat, about his parents.

(34:35):
Maybe I'll have to call him andask him if we can do a, a repeat
episode with mom and dad.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (34:40):
Well, I'll just be interested to see
like, what do they do?

(35:08):
Stuff though.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (35:09):
right.
Right?
There's, there are kids though

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (35:25):
What is, what does that look like?
Is it just the way theyarticulate themselves or what
they're talking about?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (36:00):
like?
We're like the only dude.
No, he was

(36:44):
Yeah.
Um, change the subject slightlyand go to posts that you made.
And I think you said, I forgetif I wrote this down or if, if
you said it, I'm pretty sure yousaid it.
Um, but you said it wassomething along the lines of,
let's talk Barbara Basics andyou put six words down.

(37:06):
you remember this one?
I forget.
I.
I'm gonna give you the sixwords.
We don't have to b talk aboutall six of them in depth, but as
I read them back to you, um, youknow, give me one or two of your
thoughts about if any of thesestill stand, you know, pretty
strong in your work ethic.
Um, and then I'll have somequestions around them too, from

(37:26):
some things I've observed.
But the six words areconsistency,

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (37:31):
activity

Microphone (Sc (37:33):
open-mindedness, respect, friendliness,
self-worth.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (37:47):
It'll get, they'll take you somewhere,
anywhere in life, whatever, nomatter what you're doing.
But, but I think I've, I saidthat's barber basics without
barber plans and ability to behonest and tell a client, if's

(38:40):
off the clock, we could do thisfun project but charge you money
for, they might not want that.
But yeah, I just, I just feellike my experience has plenty of
pages that'll show you how to doit.
You're not a lot that'll.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (39:06):
talk today.
You're essentially, you might beworking under the umbrella of
the bearded, but you areprobably want a lot of your
clients, I'm assuming afterreading through page, what
percentage of your clients, ifyou had to guess, are repeat?
Pretty high.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (39:31):
of your Well, at that point, like
what they're getting, unlessthey say otherwise, we're doing,
I love that.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (39:50):
that's, yeah.
I, I would imagine that if you,if we took these words and turn
them around, so if you were, ifyou were inconsistent, if you
had no creativity, if you wereclose, If you were
disrespectful, if you were rude, and if you didn't have any
self-worth, what would theopposite of that be?

(40:12):
Hated myself.
Or if

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (40:13):
you

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (40:14):
what would the opposite of self-worth
be?
self be rude?
Somebody
that is sad,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (40:32):
but if
you were those six attributes,
instead, it might be theopposite where 90% of your
clientele would be new and only
get any first thing?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (40:40):
coming back.
And maybe the only reason those10% is coming back is cuz
they're assholes too.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (40:48):
Or they pity you or something.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (40:49):
Like, likes like, or you know, or they
pity you.
They're like, man, if I don'tcome back to this guy, he might
be on the streets in a couplemonths.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (40:57):
That's not why you want people coming
back to you.
No.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (41:00):
Um, as far as open-mindedness, one
question I wanted to ask youwas, I saw your post back in
October of 2019 where you madean announcement that you were
leaving roosters to join theteam at Bearded Barber.
In fact, it wasn't even a team.
It was that, it was a brand newbusiness from what I gathered.
Was there, um, what was yourthought process behind, behind

(41:21):
that move?
Was it a big deal or was itjust.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (41:24):
Yeah, there was a huge deal.
Nowhere.
There was, it was, I was readyto get out of there.

(41:55):
I don't wanna move around toomuch.
He's looking for the rightplace.
Or at least like he had theroosters beard Barber.

(42:32):
I, at the time, he was actuallyonly a single chair.
He never responded to me.
Uh, it was because, you know, hedidn't follow me in like, on
Instagram with the messages as

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (42:44):
Yep.

Microphone (Scarlett (42:45):
requests.
If you don't check that,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (42:46):
Right.
you're never gonna, so he never saw
that.
I think he admitted it.
Cause I mean, he never saw that.
Right.
So I was like, quests.
But, uh, so I get this messageback from him.
He's like, Hey, sorry for likethe delay or something like
that.
It's like, yeah, two and a halfyears later, oh, I'm finally,

(43:08):
I'm, I'm chopped barber.
And uh, I really had juststarted.
So there's nothing there showedme in those visions.
But there's nothing there yet.

(43:29):
Yeah.
I bought into, Picked up on thatfrom him, and obviously he had
the allot music I got behindhim.

(43:58):
That was the

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (44:27):
I'm curious again, in thinking of
people who might any age, butthey just are working a job
where not passionate about it,maybe paycheck is a find that
thing.
Was there any attributes thatyou remember about Casey that
you realized you wanted to alignyourself with, with his vision?

Microphone (Scarlett (44:55):
attributes that I wanted

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (44:58):
Well, you mentioned that you got
behind Casey.
Why?
Like, what was it?
Why?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (45:03):
to, he was passionate about cutting.
All about, all about thehaircut.

(45:24):
One way that he put it tocutting in a nice barbershop.
They're doing good work.
Assumption that all barbers aredoing pretty great part.
And

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (45:50):
so it sounds like.
I don't know if you've everheard that phrase, staying with
the devil, you know, versus wasthere, even though the situation
at Roos wasn't ideal, was thereany fear about making that jump?
Or were you pretty confident oflike, this can only be good for,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (46:09):
that, uh, yeah, absolutely.
It drops too.
Raise less so nowadays, but atthat point, definitely I was
like 14 miles away.

(46:36):
Work that had to be done atfarmer roosters, rev roosters,
and out cards or things likethat.
So barely break any visible.

(46:57):
But if the client decides tofollow me on Instagram or where
I'm at, you know what I mean, that can post.
So I was trying to, trying torespect and that filled out like

(47:27):
plus, before I even started putmy two weeks, I knew he was
gonna do.

(48:06):
Park or whatever price and Gold

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (48:12):
That's awesome, man.
Was there and then join, um,bearded Barber.
Six months later we have thiswonderful pandemic that hit and
I think I saw that you guys didclose for maybe six weeks from
like mid-March to about early

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (48:32):
like, see it was, it was somewhere in
there, I can't remember.
Yeah.
It was at least two months

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (48:39):
May.
Do you remember to the best ofyour, first shut down?
Like that wasn't easy,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (48:46):
the bureau

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (48:46):
what was going through your head at
the.
Especially

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (48:50):
fear,

Microphone (Scarlett (48:50):
especially because

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (48:52):
because someone

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (48:52):
had been at a job for like, I don't
know, five years or something, and the covid hit, I guess it
would just feel different.
And then I just switched jobsand now like, fuck,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (49:05):
five.
We

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (49:05):
just shut our doors and we just
opened them.
But what, what were you afraidof at the time?
Want to get back.
I always myself and like a chophead shut down.
I'm gonna be okay with him.
Ended up being pretty great.

(49:27):
All I.
Sit at home and play, uh, warzone, which I just dropped.
got so good at that game man.

(49:48):
And, and everybody was off work.
So me and my buddies were like, get up, get on war zone, play
for 12 hours.
Smoke, drink.
Yep.
Good old time.
I was getting paid to do it.
So like at least once thatfirst, before that first check
hit, I'm like, am I actuallygonna get this money?
So like hard to believe.
And then

Microphone (Scarlett (50:08):
Scrambled.
Yeah.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (50:09):
So then we come back from Covid.
Actually think that we got 30minute haircut.

(50:33):
30 minute haircut.
Oh, close, solid.
So

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (50:45):
For one person

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (50:46):
person.
Yeah.
Talking.
We actually took an hour offafter those two weeks.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (51:09):
Yeah.
after those two weeks, we ended up
deciding to bring beer trim,gto.
We're gonna get it like thismeth.
So a beer trim that they'recomfortable with that do it.
We're like the only shop in thearea.

(51:30):
Do clients do that?
Barbers weren't doing us justfor become lot because of

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (51:44):
I think I know why everyone.
Why you guys were booked back to

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (51:50):
that covid hair.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (51:51):
was it because most everyone looked
like this?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (51:53):
it exactly what everybody looked
like?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (51:56):
dude, this was one of my favorite
before and afters

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (51:59):
Got one that's, that's Jordan's
work.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (52:00):
Jordan.
Yeah.
And, and it was because you, youknow, you just looked like such
a schmuck in the before picture.
You didn't look like a schmuck, but you, that's how all of us
looked.
I don't think any of us weregetting up every day worried
about taking care of ourselves.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (52:14):
That's haven't seen anybody.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (52:15):
that's, that's when I grew my beard
before Covid.
I always kept it, you know, Iwas always, I had an in-office
job visiting clients and so Ikept it much shorter.
Um, I don't know what you wouldcall it, but cuz it was longer
than stubble, like it wasestablished, but it was,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (52:29):
Think it was summer.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (52:30):
2020 or somewhere around there that I
just stopped touching it and itgot longer and longer.
And then eventually I startedgoing to a barber and having
them clean it up.
But yeah, man, I'm sure I, I, Iwonder if, if Google knows how
many guys grew here, it'sbecause we just stopped caring
for a couple months.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (52:49):
months guys kept him and now that
picture is bold.
Remember my hair touching my earand it bugged me so much.
No memory of feeling that, that

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (53:09):
picture, that one made me laugh.
I don't know why, but when Istumbled on it and I switched to
the after and then I went backto the before, it just made me
chuckle.
Partly just cuz it's memories, you know, of like yeah that was,
that was just all of us, youknow, we unkempt little boys cuz
of being locked in our homes fortwo, like you said, I was
getting that money too, and Ihad the exact same reaction

(53:31):
before the money hit.
It sort of seemed like falsehope, you know?
It was like, is this, arereinforcements really on their
way?
And then that morning came whereI poured my coffee, got a push
notification from my bank and Iopened it up.
I was like,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (53:44):
woo.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (53:45):
Oh man.
Wow.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (53:50):
Yeah, I know.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (53:53):
Um,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (53:54):
think a lot of people did.
Not too much probably.
I mean,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (53:57):
like you, you got back at in two,
after two months.
I think mine was almostidentical.
It

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (54:02):
I think

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (54:03):
I, I got laid off in late April and
somewhere around June or July Iwas, I was back to work.
I was itching for it.
It was fun at first and thensomewhere between like six and
10 weeks, the fun started tofade away and I was just, my
hair's a mess, drinking more andI ain't, I ain't doing shit with

(54:24):
my life, you know.
Let's get back to the grind.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (54:27):
grind.
Yeah.
So that picture, we all four ofus in the shop at that point,
chop like, uh, remember how tocut hair?
So did

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (54:39):
you all just do each

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (54:40):
other?
Yeah, so we all traded cuts.
We all needed one bad,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (54:43):
cut

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (54:44):
we all traded cuts.
And I kind of got back in thegroove a little bit and you
gotta, uh, you know, I don'tknow if those first clients
like, thought about that at all.
Cut hair in two and a halfmonths and they were gonna be
the first person sitting back inour chair, but they probably
didn't care.
They probably didn't care.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (54:57):
It's, they're not gonna make it worse.
Just, just help me.
Yeah.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (55:07):
Um, in terms of self-worth, I found
the post in 2021 where you didthat price increase.
Um, I sort of had a few thoughtsaround this.
I was hoping you would talkabout it.
Um, was it a good move?
Um, let's start with that.
You know, it was over a year agonow.
I, I have no idea what yourrates were.
Are they still increased?

(55:28):
Did you end up lowering themback down?
What happened with that?
end up 33 and then 40 and then you

(55:49):
start race to grow.
There's no more delay left togrow is to that the that you

(56:18):
lose from that or Great.
You know what's fu so funny about
you saying that is for anybusiness owner or potential
business owners that arelistening is, I had a boss that
did that several years ago withan accounting firm.
So think about that.
You know, like we're deliveringtax returns and audits to people

(56:40):
and we raised our rates.
You know what he said word forword?
What you just, clients that Ilost.
Thank God if I knew that all Ihad to do was raise my rates and
I'd be making more money whilegetting rid of my problem child.
Like I would've done this a yearago.

(57:00):
Can I raise rates again?
I isn't barely lost any noticedon in barber culture.

(57:30):
Go about that.

(57:51):
You gotta do it in the, there'sa lot of those things happen
about earlier, more than justthe cut.

(58:18):
It's gonna happen eventually.
I'm already, I'm like, go my.
So I could do it,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (58:23):
you're booked a month out right now.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (58:26):
month for a beer trim.
It's not quite so bad

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (58:28):
was gonna say, I'm, I'm, I'm about
to book my next beer cause I'mgoing back home in May and

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (58:38):
plug.
Where's Casey?
Text me.
You shouldn't have a

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (58:42):
be that client.
I'll, I'll be proactive aboutit.
But I did see a couple postswhere you said, uh, you said
book now and book often, orElerd be going to

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (58:52):
book.
So

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (58:52):
if anyone wants a, a trim from Phil
for
if birthdays,

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (58:57):
Parties, Christmas, Easter.
Don't wait till the night beforeEaster because boy,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (59:04):
too late for Easter at this point.
Yeah.
too many mops to chop.
Yeah.
Is there, outside of yourschedule being full, was there,
going back to self-awareness onthe price raise, was there
anything else where you knew youwere ready or was it really just
looking at your schedule andlike, like was, was that it or
what else went into thoughtwise?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (59:28):
else?
Well, uh, what other shopcharging, I'm always trying to
keep chops by.

(59:57):
Well, I'll just say there seal alot of barbers that really like
to sell up and it's good.
There's value to giving us thefull picture.
That's the easiest.
That's the quickest.

(01:00:19):
Yeah.
I like birds or betteratmosphere.
Barbers know a thing about about'em though, but the one that

(01:00:44):
costs more, you automaticallyassume is better, right?
Yeah.
After you dried'em all, youmight, but at least at your
first, I believe we are thebetter barbershop,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:00:59):
Right.
It's, it's funny man, playingthe, the Harris, not the
comparison game, but like yousaid talking you, I think it's
good to the com competition as adata point, right?
What are the other barbershopscharging?
And I've been thinking aboutthis for my own personal
patriots, as I mentioned tosomething I'm passionate enough

(01:01:22):
about, I want to do itfull-time.
So at first, I think I set upthree tiers on Patreon's, right?
About$5 a month, 10 or, and Ididn't put the dollar amounts
that high because one, I don'tknow what I'm doing.
Uh, two, I, you know, I don't, Idon't know, I didn't feel, maybe
I didn't have as muchself-confidence, but then one

(01:01:43):
guest in part, and whether hewas being kind or he meant it,
and I think he meant it, he wasa low up.
So if.
Want this to be your day job, like tears a little bit.
So I went and I switched him toa$5 tier, a$25 tier.
And if, and then even wonderinglike, should there be a thousand
dollars tier in here?

(01:02:04):
Like what if some random personhere's the episode and he's, he
or she is like, I want thisthing to go viral.
Sure.
I'll be the one person thatdescribes it a thousand bucks a
month.
So then I did exactly what youdid and I looked up someone, I'm
not gonna say who, who I assumebased off what I know of this
individual, um, is leading apretty successful life.
And I go to his Patreon page andguess what is.

(01:02:29):
$3,$5 and$7.
And I'm like, what a second, what the actual fuck?
Like I didn't know what I wasgonna find, but I thought, you
know, the$5 one makes sense.
What if like my 18 year oldsister wants to support me?
That one's perfect for like heror even a buddy who maybe
doesn't have a ton of money, buthe believes in me.
You know, it's, it's that levelwhere someone can go in and say,

(01:02:52):
we're gonna throw a few dollarstowards David's Saturday night.
Said that great.
But I guess I was expecting onhis, he would've had like a
spiked tier next, like a hundreddollars a month and then maybe
there would've even been like acorporate tier where like$5,000
a month.
You know, I don't know what Iwas expecting, but to see three
and five and seven and knowingthat this guy makes his money

(01:03:14):
off of his business, it a mademe wanna research him a bit more
to try to figure out does healso have funding come coming
from somewhere else?
But I want to also ask him like, why three, five, and seven?
Cuz they're all so close to eachother that it almost, why not
just make one tier at five bucksand like what?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:03:34):
yeah, that doesn't make any sense.
Cuz somebody's successfulnecessarily or doesn't mean they
couldn't be doing it right.
Like he is making all his moneyoff of those really doesn't

(01:03:55):
like,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:03:58):
I'm glad I'm not the only one who
thinks it's strange from, and, and, and that's why I do like
Patreon, is it's not like I'mselling a product like a water
bottle where I have to say it'sgonna be set price at 4 99 a
bottle full, because you can setthose so the right people will
sign up at five.
The right people will.

(01:04:21):
Um, so I'm not overthinking ittoo much.
And I even think I put on thehomepage, if you want to set
tier at a specific dollaramount, tell me.
So if someone messaged me andwas like, I'll sign up for a
buck a month, I'll make anothertier and I'll put it at a buck a
month.
So that's what's sort of cool isyou can, you can fluctuate it
and do whatever you want withit.
Um, but yeah, I'm just, I'mranting at

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:04:42):
I think what, I think that's just
money, but dollar tier mights a$5 tier, but now you

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:05:12):
That almost makes me too like, you
know, always leave the$5 onethere, but should the other.
I, you know, and again, I'mjust, I, I truly don't know.
I'm 13 episodes in, been doingthis for two, always worked for
a company that just paid me.
I've never put thought intowhere should I be valuing

(01:05:33):
myself, but also being, acknowledging the fact that
because I'm a new podcast, itshould be valued at that.
I don't know, man.
You know, I'm, I'm probablyoveranalyzing.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:06:02):
Say in the barbering world, I see
all the time, five minute hair,30 minute haircut for bucks.

(01:06:28):
I'm losing money out.
I do give a little deal for acombo, do that.
It might be successful, but

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:06:55):
gonna research him a little because I,
I think there must be another, whether it's ads on his pot,
whatever it may be, he's gottabe something else.
Or maybe he just has thousandsof people throwing three to
seven bucks at him every month.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:07:12):
It just works.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:07:13):
you know?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:07:14):
that when things just work, forced to

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:07:18):
Yeah.
Um, I had a question for you.
You had a post that you said,it's the little things that
count.
Do you give, I didn't write theentire quote down, but I think
it was, do you give, um, likeeyebrow trims and ear hair pluck
pulls when someone comes in fora beer trim?

(01:07:38):
Do you still do that?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:07:41):
that did yours?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:07:43):
I wasn't really paying

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (01:07:44):
painted.
People don't.
You did consciously.
Like you got taken care of.
I used to ask about it.
I feel like you're doing extra.
Somebody doesn't want it.
That will make it even getclose.
I'm like,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:08:06):
don't,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:08:07):
do, I do have

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:08:08):
I like my ear hair.
Ear hair.
Said nobody.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:08:11):
one guy I can think of off, off the
top of my head.
You like something, like afeature?
Yeah.
Just do it.
And I attach that to.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (01:08:40):
Talking about the little things.
I have a story for you thoughtson it.
Um, before I started shaving myown head, I would go to the
barbershop to do it.
I didn't, I guess I just didn'tknow I could shave my own head
or I thought I'd walk away withlike seven different cuts of
bms.
And so I went to a barbershopand I was sort of bouncing
around trying to find someonethat I enjoyed.

(01:09:01):
Um, this speaks to.
Friendliness factor.
I was trying to, to find someoneI enjoyed being in their company
for 45 minutes, you know, everycouple of weeks.
And so I was bouncing around tothe different barbers, watching
a who cut me, who didn't, whowas on time for the appointment,
just like looking at theselittle things.
And one day, um, I walk in, youcould set an appointment or you

(01:09:22):
could just walk in.
So one day I walk in with no,and there's a new guy in there
and he looks like he just jumpedout of like a Peaky Blinders
episode.
Are you familiar with that show?

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (01:09:32):
familiar somebody.
He had like super shaved sides.
And then,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:09:34):
So he was actually bald as well.
And I was like, cool.
So maybe he shaves his own head,which that's a, that's a plus.
Um, but he had on, um, a vestand like a pin stripes shoe, uh,
suit, and a very nice shoes.
And this guy just, he dressedlike a barber from the 1930s is
what I imagine barbers may havedressed like.
So I thought, that guy, I don'tcare what the way it is, I'll

(01:09:56):
wait for him.
So he gave, he, he gave me asuper clean shave, zero cuts,
very friendly.
Um, and then at the end of it,he put these two like vibrator
things on his hands and heclicks

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:10:09):
on.
He gave me this

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:10:11):
little 32nd massage and it felt so
good.
And I'd never had that happen tome before.
I'd never, I've got likemassages, but not a barber,
just, you know,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:10:20):
not, Ooh.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:10:21):
and it felt great, especially I got
sore necks, four shoulders soreback, so I appreciated the hell
out of it.
Fast forward two or three cutsand one day he doesn't have his
vest.
Fast forward, another couplecuts and now maybe he has the
pants, but he's just wearing at-shirt.
Fast forward another couple cutsand now he's in basketball
shorts and a white t-shirt.

(01:10:43):
Uh, fast forward another couplecuts.
The massages are now going awayand now he's showing up looking
like he just got outta six weeksof getting paid to play video
games, not given his massages.
And, um, I don't know man, itbugged me a little bit

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (01:11:01):
little.
So

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:11:01):
at that point I went and just, uh,
I think I YouTubed, oh no, itwas one of my buddies.
That's right.
One of my buddies was giving meshit about not shaving my own
head and I thought thisindividual has gone downhill.
I don't know what's going onwith him, but for some reason it
bugged me that he dressed theway he did.
Which is funny cuz if I had methim when he was in basketball
shorts and a t-shirt, I neverwould've set that expectation.

(01:11:24):
But since he set the bar up hereand lowered his own bar, I
noticed, so I shaved my own headand my very first time doing it,
I didn't cut myself a singletime and I never went back to
him and he lost a client for asforever.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:11:39):
it.
Probably wouldn't have waitedfor him and gone to him the
first time.
I aren't doing that stuff, wanting to hear, it's up here

(01:12:03):
and he's saying anything to him.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:12:06):
Never.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:12:07):
It's not your job, but maybe hey, and
that's not like a reallycomfortable

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:12:16):
hey man, why do you look like a
schmuck

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:12:19):
I wouldn't have said it that way,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:12:21):
boy?
Maybe

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:12:23):
but I think though that there's
like, Hey,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:12:26):
dad.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:12:48):
He hasn't really realized that he,
he'd fallen that far from, fromgrace.
Right.
Fall on that far down.
You know, sometimes some, it'snot your job, but I find myself
thinking

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:13:03):
David now would've asked him, I
would've even just a coupleweeks ago, man, there is a, we
were going to, uh, I was goingto Los Angeles, um, for a work
trip.
Jump on the plane.
I'm on the aisle, middle seatsymp guy on the window.
And as the plane tape Burtis haddone her announcements, the, an

(01:13:26):
engine had fired up.
And he gets a call aboutsomething that was going on, on,
and it was the worst possible.
And, uh, um, plane takes off.
So he ends the call, sort of, hedidn't have a hood on you, like
a shirt on, like, what I do now.
And he sort of raised it up likethis, started crying on the,

(01:13:49):
that timing, you know, of likeyou're about to be cut off from,
from, uh, your data.
So we get up and I waited forthe plane to level out because a
volume would go down bit and Ididn't wanna, the guy and I
waited till he seemed like heopposed himself.
And then I, I, you know,whatever.
But the point is, um, we had abeautiful conversation flight.

(01:14:12):
I think that the fact that Iacknowledged, you know,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:14:19):
Said

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:14:19):
did when we got off the flight and
shook canne hearted ways.
Um, but to your point, like thattook it again, it took me a
while to get there.
You know, I don't know whyDavid, in his twenties would
maybe either judge the guy orjust be like, oh, this is super
awkward.
You know, my barber's not in asuit.
The guy next to me is crying.

(01:14:39):
But people

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:14:40):
in his shape.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:14:40):
that shit and trying to do it more if
appropriate.
You sort of gotta feel it out ona case by, but in this case,
like me and homeboy were stucksitting next to each, why would
I not just.
Hey, you need anything?
Um, and in that case you didsomeone to talk to for a second.

(01:15:01):
Why did I

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (01:15:07):
Barbara,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:15:15):
go off?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:15:24):
cuz
you said it was powerful.
What I was gonna say issometimes if you, if you keep
your eye out for them, you canhave some really good
conversations with people.
But if your eyes are close toit, to those opportunities, that
was a missed opportunity.
Cuz I wasn't looking cuz I wastoo worried about myself and oh
well is me, I need to go find anew barber again.
Ah, you know, I wasn't lookingat it from the perspective of

(01:15:45):
like kindness and compassion andjust asking him.
Cause the way you phrased it wasbeautiful.
Hey man, when I first, you know, chose you, it was because of
this.
You good?
Can I do anything?
Maybe give him a bigger tip, youknow, I don't know.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:15:59):
maybe you don't need to even do
anything for

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:16:08):
All right.
Question for you, because Iwasn't able to figure this out.
Who is.
Is he your brother?
And do you or do you not havethe same mother?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (01:16:19):
breath?
We have the same

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:16:22):
Okay.
I should.
Super tight.
Super tight.
We're we're super tight.
Is that, he's super tight takingNo,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:16:33):
I just, I, I haven't described
like a friend or a familymember.
I should have wrote the postdown or taken a snapshot of them
or something.
But there is one where you were, you'd said something like, man,
you know, I'm so glad that hismom lets me borrow him, or, I
forget what the verbiage was,but I, I, there is one post that

(01:16:54):
threw me off.
I was like, wait, are theybrothers or are they not?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:16:58):
So say things in a post that's
maybe like an inside joke orsomething that you'd really have
to know me well to know and knowwhen I post it.
Like most people probably won'tget that guess, but.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:17:14):
That's fair.
Um, the last topic on barberbasics or people basics as we
have found out, is, I guess Itied this into friendliness in
my notes, but in your Instagram, consistently throughout your
posts, you'll say somethingabout, I don't have to say the
best because the picture or youknow, you'll make some claims

(01:17:38):
like, you know, I'm one of thebest barbers in Austin, and even
as I'm saying it right now, it'scoming off as like cocky.
But when I met you and when Iwas going through your
Instagram, I never once thoughtlike, oh, this guy's being real.
You have a, a very humbleconfidence to your, and I wonder

(01:17:59):
how if someone else wanted toachieve that, like, I'm not even
really sure what the question isexcept to maybe say if someone
else had a goal of walkingthrough life, humble confidence,
how do you think you got to thatplace?
You can say, I know I'm one ofthe better barbers in town, but
me, I don't take that ascockiness.

(01:18:23):
just, well, first I see itbecause you did a great job on
my beard boss.
It seemed like a very humbleperson.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:18:33):
short answer, I.
Other really good barbers outthere, but about early.

(01:19:09):
You go into every day trying tobeat my go into every day with

(01:19:36):
ready for

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:19:57):
Say you have those conversations
with yourself.
Do you

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:19:59):
'em.
Hi.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:20:01):
to, will you take a few minutes
every morning and actually justsit in like quietness, almost
like a form of meditation?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:20:11):
Start your day with a shot, or I'll

(01:20:53):
run through my

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:21:12):
If you have a, I'm asking this
selfish reason, um, and I'lltell you why after you answer,
but if you have a day coming up,no, there's gonna challenging,
say, you know, it could be arough conversation with the
significant other, maybe a cultclient.
Maybe your boss is gonna behappy about something.

(01:21:33):
Know that either the next dayor, you know, at some 0.2 day
you're gonna be walking into asituation.
How do you mentally you readyfor that?
Or, or do you just let thingsspiral out of control?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:21:46):
let best not to let it get there?
Cause I've been there before andthey warm up and peel that burn.

(01:22:09):
When you're doing press, it'stough.
You can know why you're doing sowhen you, those tough try to

(01:22:50):
keep, it was on me.
I always knew he was on it.
Well, I guess, but still.
Did a lot of that,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:23:17):
Love that man.
That's very, very well put thatfor instead.
Instead of spiraling, looking atit, I know this is gonna be
tough, but I also not grow fromsort of about it a little bit.
I know when I think about mychallenges, I think those

(01:23:37):
definitely were something thatsharpened the blade.
So, and if it wasn't for Lowe's,would I still just be a butter
knife?
Damn near ineffective.
So I, I, I like that.
That's a good reminder.

(01:24:03):
I'm catchy.
Catchy.
But one of your posts youmentioned surrounding yourself
with people that push you.
I agree a hundred percent.
But also easy, easy to say rightto, easy to believe potentially.
you felt like you're in a placein life where you're not
surrounded by people that, howdo you start to environment?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:24:31):
your, everybody definitely does.

(01:25:12):
Workout routine.
What about lifting that up?
You gotta kind of humbleyourself and it's workout

(01:25:36):
routine, the bells, and ask whatthat they're passionate about.

(01:25:58):
Not everybody is.
Arbors, right?
Like only be the people yougotta be ready

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:26:21):
Have you by chance, seen, have you,
has anyone ever come into thebearded barber, whether it was
you or one of your colleagues, and they saw your guys' passion
and energy as a result, ended upreferring them to a barber
school and were able to see thatjourney.
Has that happened

Microphone (Scarlett (01:26:39):
certainly have people talk up on, I'm
always gonna give'em whetherI've ever seen anybody come
through.

(01:27:22):
I love getting to do.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:27:38):
yet?
I hope in, uh, I was telling youbefore we started recording
that.
Someone helped me get thissaying this.
Now down to the uni, I thinkit'd be cool if one day whether
it was a guest on the podcast, just that was the situation with
me and this gentleman, the gueston his pod, called him up, asked
him for his advice.

(01:27:58):
Any hesitation or reservation, very happy to give it.
I do hope for that one.
I don't know why, but I justlove to be able to be part of
knowing that like behind thescenes as get off and running.
Hope the same for you too.
I hope that you find, you know, someone lands a chair and
whatever it is you look for whenyou tell if they're serious

(01:28:21):
about it, they have it.
I don't know.
I just knowing what little Iknow about you.

(01:28:41):
That for you.
There's a lot more that goesinto that kind.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:29:09):
I was listening to an interview.
Do you know who?
Alex Cooper, her podcast, Ithink is some just as highly
ranked as it is, and sherecently did an interview and I
read the on someone else'spodcast and I read a quick
synopsis of what they talkedabout and it sounded like it was
the bulk of it was gonna be herpodcast and where it started

(01:29:32):
versus how she got to being thesecond highest ranked podcast in
the world.
And one of the things that Ilove that she said, and it's now
a stick on my bathroom mirror,is that she wished that she had
treated her podcast as if it, asif it would be the net big
thing, whether it became thenext big thing or it didn't.

(01:29:52):
Cause she made so many mistakesbecause she undervalued it.
Oh, this is just a podcast.
It's just David having fun.
No big deal.
It's not gonna make me anymoney.
It's not gonna go anywhere.
So sure, I'll have subpar guestson.
I'm not gonna ask for the 50bucks on, on Patreon.
She always treated it, um,excuse me, not always in the

(01:30:15):
beginning stages.
She admitted that she did nottreat.
A type of respect and could ithave even became even bigger,
even faster with less pain andless mistakes if she had gone
into it with the mentality ofthis is the next big thing.
And I thought, you know whatAlex, I like that.

(01:30:36):
And I look up to you quite abit.
So I went and found my stickynote and I wrote David, Saturday
night, every decision that youmake with David Saturday night,
sit back, make it as if it's thenext big thing.
And, and I just, I love thatmentality of, of, and the way
you just articulated it and theway she articulated it.
Cuz even it almost just boilsdown to like, just have some

(01:30:57):
self-respect.
Just respect yourself and yourwork and the fact that you're
taking two hours out of yourevening to sit down with Phil.
Like, why would I disrespect youor me?
No.
Treated with respect.
Yeah.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:31:23):
card, really hard.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:32:11):
I'm happy you're here man.
And I'm thoroughly enjoying thecon.
Um, one question I had for you.
Are we doing okay on time?
Awesome.
Power through
had for you,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:32:26):
We got more beards, so we're ready.
Um,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:32:29):
work clothes in the truck, so I'm
kidding.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:32:32):
beards and don't ever let me touch your
beard.
That's why I don't touch my own.
I just tell

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (01:32:36):
touches this

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:32:38):
the I and I'm the opposite.
I will, will not let myselftouch it.
I was just telling my sister,uh, that's who I was on the
phone with when you showed upand I told her, I was like,
yeah, man.
I'm having, I think my newbarber over tonight.
He's like, your barber, but youdo your own hair.
And I said, I do my own head, mybeard.
I'm terrified that I would, I'djust go a little too deep and

(01:32:58):
cause like a, you know, I'd takeout a chunk and then I'd have to
shave the whole thing down orI'd just be walking around
looking idiot.
at least I, I'm not doing it.
I only trust myself with myhead.
Um,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:33:13):
In looking through your Instagram,
I found something I hadn't foundon any of our prior guests yet,
um, which was, I think you mayhave had a friend that passed
away back in 2016, someone namedDerek.
Do you remember that?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:33:29):
you barber school with him, other
through cook guy that was closerwith pa.

(01:34:06):
Well, shortly F started at thesame time.
He was a little further alongcause I think where they won the

(01:34:45):
world of Chicago.
We didn't actually go toWrigley.
We couldn't afford to.
Ken ended up missing the lasttrain back and, uh, kind of knew
this guy that worked at the mallwho was in my store, two down,

(01:35:06):
lived in the city, calls him up,so at midnight drives us back to
his place.
He's got like a tiny oneapartment in Chicago on his
floor with no blankets.
Um, he was, uh, out of and coolto be able to spend time with

(01:36:02):
somebody that on the outside, been in and.
Be able to get to know him.

(01:36:28):
Last time I was ever clean bodysacrifice for him, I let him do,
he hacks me up too.
It was bad.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:36:45):
Oh no, like cut cuts.
You mean

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:36:47):
mean?
Not like, I wasn't like bloodyall over, but little one here
and there.
Little mix.
I remember I'm like leaningback.
Char Smiley wrapping up and he,and he did a shit on purpose
too.
He had two handfuls of aftershave and just, oh, and I, I
remember I physically likejumped outta the chair.
I was like, fuck.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:37:03):
What a dick Junior.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:37:05):
I know it.
After he passed away, I, I sworehe's gonna be the last person to
give.
Um,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:37:13):
as you look back on, on, you know,
junior and um, any advice thatyou'd give for someone as
they're going through the grief?
Part of the reason I wanted toask is cuz

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:37:25):
first.
It's

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:37:26):
funny man, I was thinking about this
might be, you know, sound weird, but I was thinking about the
fact the other day.
We all die, but we don't reallytalk about it that much.
Almost like what we were talkingabout earlier with stretching.
Like, you know, like, why do we,and I don't think, I do not
wanna sit around having hourlong conversations about death.
Right.
That's, that's not my intentionand that's not what I think

(01:37:46):
people do.
But also I think that Junior isa, a good example.
Um, part of the reason I wantedto ask as well is because I had,
I have a friend who in 2021,his, his brother passed away,
uh, much to life.
31 years old, I believe.
Possibly 30.
And it hits you pretty hard.
And so the reason I wanted toask if there's anything you

(01:38:07):
share, either regrets about howyou'd grieve, or did you, you
know, was there something youdid that was really good, like
go to counseling or I was morepresent with my family, you
know, what advice would you givesomeone so we can try to give
the listeners Woo.
So that when that day comes, youknow, we've thought about it a
little bit and maybe we have a,a strategy or two, how to go
through.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:38:28):
bit.
I think that talking to peoplethat had us sort of relate with
them, remember them in apositive way, definitely
recommend outside of theresomething that would be so hard

(01:38:59):
for me.
All right.
And.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:39:06):
I heard, I'm kicking myself for
not writing this down because Iwant to go and re-listen.
When I was on this podcastingbinge during, on one of them,
they were talking about howparticular in tribes got back
from war.
The very first thing you woulddo is you would all gather
around a fire and you all tellall stories from the tap end,

(01:39:29):
good and bad brothers that hadpassed away victories that were
had.
And the reason why is insteadof, instead of allowing their
soldiers to isolate, to go backto their home and to be alone
with the demons and the memoriesof like Hill, you know, there's
a power to coming together as acommunity talking about it.

(01:39:52):
And I, I agree with you, talkingto people close to them, I think
that one of the worst things youdo, this is just me, just David,
from 35 years on this planet andthinking about my experience,
things I've observed, silence isprobably the the worst, right?

(01:40:13):
So whether it's a friend, youknow, if you can't afford a
counselor like you, so next bestperson, probably just someone
else that, that, him, her, whoever brother, brothers,
sister, start.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:40:27):
30.
You gotta, yeah.
You don't, um, he'll grow into,
All right.
I'm gonna really switch gearshere now, but thank you so much
man.
We're, we're not quite wrappingup, but we are sort of getting
away from mindset, um, andbarbering for a couple of
minutes.
I wanted to talk to you aboutyour Instagram a little bit.

(01:40:50):
You obviously are veryconsistent on it.
Um, I'm curious, one, uh, twoquestions really.
Number
for one,
you put a shit ton of hashtags on
your post and I wonder, um, doyou have any idea if those

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:41:07):
shit to help

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:41:07):
posts get noticed?
Do you care if the posts getnoticed as your Instagram for
fun?
Are you hoping it drives newbusiness?
Could you just talk to me alittle bit about what your
thoughts are and why you're socons behind it?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:41:21):
are, you know, that was one of the
words that I put on that poster.
Talk about or not really believein that post.
But I love getting to look backwhen I look back on old posts.
I don't know if that was a postthat's happy about or did it
because, but I know that I wouldgrowth and see the progress and

(01:41:45):
a lot of value in the know whenI post close to still is all.

(01:42:10):
For everybody to see and workthat's coming up if I've done my
part and so haircut ain'tperfect, none of'em are, but at
the end of the day I, I wannapost those because critical like

(01:42:34):
can so many times like it worksand I'm probably better now.
That kind of little pads you upto Boston, Texas Barber, barber,

(01:43:04):
Austin, integrity iteration ofthat I've thought of.
I've tried note and I posted itso that care less about likes on
it, likes on EM ability on.

(01:43:35):
Health and being able to lookback on those as tools free,
holy free.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:43:42):
Right.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:43:43):
Every barber should be used.
I noticed some of'em kind ofgone out and they used my, uh,
my spots that I like to take mypicture.
Good lighting is, they look good
Yeah,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:43:59):
out of the work to be able

(01:44:19):
you definitely could tell it gets
better.
Cause I'll, what I do when I'm,they have an Instagram account
is I'll scroll to the verybottom cuz I wanna sort of see
days look like, um, and thenwork my way up.
And I didn't, I, I can't, I wishI could tell you when I saw the
change, but there is

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:44:38):
look definitely

Microphone (Scarlett (01:44:39):
somewhere like 2, 3, 400 si it just
started going.
Whether it was a mixture of newbarbershop, new phone, who
knows?
But the, by the time you get tothe top of the page, um, As far
as just like the quality of thepictures go.
I

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:44:59):
Want other barbers to be able to go
back and it wasn't always thatgood.
Right?
They only protested wherethere's nothing wrong with that,

(01:45:21):
but what is this?
Right?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:45:28):
and it's funny too, because you, you
even said we're mostly selfselves.
Other barbers might look at someof the cuts and say, could have
done this, that, or the other.
But,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:45:41):
they do
but, but to me, I, I don't see any of
that, but I also don't know whatto look for.
And I also wasn't looking at allthe pictures.
I was more looking, scrolling, just to see if you typed
anything or questions from, um,but yeah, I just, just to see if
it makes you feel any, I likedall of the pictures, but I'm

(01:46:02):
also not a barber

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:46:04):
you No, I hope Barbers do look at
that and and see that and maybethat perfect.
He begs some questions, right?
Like that's fine.
Oh.

(01:46:29):
I
did have a first, uh, or someone
actually reached out to me Sure.
And I asked her how she found meand uh, sure enough, she said it

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:46:42):
first

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:46:43):
it was one of the tags.
Cuz I'm, I'm in the exact sameboat you are.
If it gets mic your 500, like Idon't care.
It's more about having apresence cuz um, I am still on
the fence bell.
Build a website or not Graham,to your point of three and
requires almost no work exceptjust putting something every

(01:47:03):
day.
And hope would be thateventually, if I had a certain
percentage of people, guests, that would be awesome because
I'm editing
it was

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (01:47:14):
whatever it is, right?
It would just free up some of mytime if I, so even my own
hashtag play around with them a.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:47:43):
right out on my booking info right
there on the page on as far asto message me.
You know, thing.
It's right there, so

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:47:51):
you didn't miss it.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:47:51):
It's almost a red flag to me if
someone's like reaching out tome to try to get a cut.
I way I do things is right here.
My link for the appointment.
I'll steer'em in the rightdirection.
I'll just say, Hey, explain bymy rule buddy.

(01:48:22):
That requires extra work everytime.
Say that at the beginning of,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:48:41):
You're not a class B barber

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:48:44):
it's funny because people, I don't
know if you asked about that, but people ask'em about Class A
barbers.
No, they're class.

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (01:48:52):
anymore.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:48:54):
There is none.
That's it.
So

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:48:55):
what's the question they ask?
What's a
class?
Yeah, what's a class A barberlike?
Is there other classes?
Barber, if you have got yourlicense or your class barber.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:49:03):
A barber.
Okay.
So basically just means

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:49:05):
just sounds

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:49:05):
anyone who doesn't know,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (01:49:07):
doesn't
myself, you're just a licensed barber.
Yeah.
Legit training

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:49:14):
legit actually.
It doesn't mean that, it doesn'tmean that it

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:49:16):
on the school from what we were
talking about.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:49:18):
we're, depends on the school and more
than anything.
That's what always scares me, scared me
a little bit about the personaltraining industry.
Before I went to college, Ilooked into get my training
cert, and all you do is youorder a book and you go and take

(01:49:39):
a test, pass that test, get apiece of

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:49:42):
of paper,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:49:42):
saying that you are allowed to get
heart, a gym, and anyone,whether it's a teenager playing
hockey or a 75 year old who justfell down a flight of stairs and
they're rehabbing, you areequally qualified to train
either person.
At the time.
That didn't scare me.
I just thought, woo-hoo, thiswill be super easy to do.
And now looking back on it, it'slike that's our only standard.

(01:50:05):
That's how we do.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:50:07):
I guess that's sort of begs the
question like should there bemore to government involvement
in saying do what?
Or

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:50:14):
Maybe not the government, but even
just companies like, I'm notgonna remember what these
acronyms stand.
There's organizations like AHAand Nam.
NAM stands here, like theNational Academy of Sports

Microphone (Scarl (01:50:25):
organizations and this isn't

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:50:26):
a slam on them, like the personal
training industry got to whereit was reason.
But if NAM was to even say maybeinstead of a one test there's
three, or maybe we categorizethe trainers, maybe you have to
be able to say like, I want towork with, you know, um, sports
people who are training forsports.
Great.
You're gonna take a specifictype of certification.
Um, I wanna work with elderlypeople.

(01:50:47):
Great.
You're gonna go through acompletely different training
that's gonna solely focus onhelping someone 65 and older
live a healthy, productive, youknow, it just feels like it
could be structured a little bitdifferent because everyone is so
different.
And to give one certification

Microphone (Scar (01:51:04):
certification, you

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:51:05):
go work with the entire population
is problematic.

Microphone (Scarlet (01:51:12):
population, you gotta do your research and

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:51:16):
We

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:51:17):
'em, right?
To relate it to the barbarbering.

(01:51:43):
Almost every year there'ssomebody.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:51:54):
So if let's say that happened, that
would change essentially me.
David could say I want to go bea barber and I could do it.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:52:07):
The only thing that makes sense to
me, Are all fresh so they can,5% cuts out the door.

(01:52:30):
That's all they care

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:52:32):
As it stands now though, they want
to de consider them your compcuz I've

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:52:37):
them.
Absolutely not.
Okay.
Cuz yeah, I was gonna say, I'venever ever thought I need a beer
trim.
Where is there a great clipsdown the road I can go to?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:52:46):
That's People just want, what's the

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:52:53):
That seems terrifying.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:52:54):
ton of'em, right?
There's a ton every, got a greatclips on.
So obviously there's some creditwhere, but I know,

(01:53:15):
you seen Yeah, I could.
Um, there is one particularclient that when I read his
handle, it made me sit in

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:53:25):
bitch cookies.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:53:28):
How do you know I was gonna say
that.
Were you peeking up my notes?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:53:31):
I, I just know as soon as you said
that,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:53:34):
I don't remember.
It was just like, thanks forcoming in today or whatever.
And as soon as I saw bitchcookies, I just started
chuckling to myself.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:53:43):
He's an awesome,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:53:53):
Stock Martins?
I haven't been there yet.
Oh, cool.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:54:03):
he's awesome.
But anyways, it's always beenhis handle, said anything

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:54:11):
Okay.
There's got you never asked himlike, why bitch cookies?
asked him.
Maybe I did the first time, butthis would've been like five
years ago.
And he just like, just cutbucket.
That's kind of how, who he is.
He'd be like, why not?
Dude cracks me up though.
It

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:54:27):
made me chuckle.
It made my night.
Um, alright, last couple ofquestions here.
I found your wedding page, soyou went to, I always
mispronounce their name, Abra bAbra

Microphone (Scarl (01:54:42):
mispronounce, everyone knows

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:54:43):
what we're, what we're saying, what
we're not saying.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:54:47):
Um, you went in there

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:54:51):
to find some jean and you found
this young lady

Microphone (Scarlett (01:54:57):
attractive

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:54:58):
or what?
What interacted in this jeanshopping?
Uh, was she just pretty, was itgood conversation?
What was it?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:55:07):
Conver talk too much.
And, and story is, uh, Uh, getsome work jeans.
Cuz like I was saying, I workedat those day in my mall that my
barber school was in, I got mywork jeans, that uniform you had
to have, I forgot my jeans, so Ihad to go buy some real quick to

(01:55:33):
go in there and she helpedbuying from them.
But I just remember she helpedme out attractive.
Wanted to ask for a number, butI did, I like look back and I

(01:55:54):
was like, cute.
You?
Yeah.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:55:57):
Did she hear you?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:55:57):
Yeah.
And I was like,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:56:00):
Did she smile?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:56:01):
smile?
Did she, I was like kind ofwalking away.
I think she must have smiled, but that was like the end of the
interaction.
A couple weeks later was Fridayback to Abercrombie with the
intention of trying to find herin there, posing as a shopper.
And I was sort of like lookingaround to see if I could find
her and they didn't find her,but I ended up like, uh, picking

(01:56:23):
up shirt or whatever and I go tocheck out and then started, was
like super packed in there forthe way they were doing it was.
And in my head I'm waiting inline.
I was get her, I gotta ask herenough if she calls me up next.
That's amazing night.
And I asked her for her numberand she's like, policy would

(01:56:52):
never on it.
But, but I gave it to her andlike later that night, uh,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:57:01):
up.
That's a cool story, man.
One of the, um, I read a bookduring Covid called The Power of
Regret.
You ever heard that one byEssentially, the reason I got it
is because the author seemedreputable in the sense that
they, they surveyed, interviewed, I forget the word
he used, but thousands of peopleall over the globe because

(01:57:22):
there's, there's a study, if I,if I did a study of 50 guys as
they went in and out of beardedbarber, Texas, that'd be,
wouldn't be the greatest dataset, right?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:57:31):
Yeah.
But they went

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:57:33):
all over the globe and it was just
like a five question surveyabout regret.
And after they got everyone'stop regrets, they categorized
Eland.
And one of the biggest regretswas not acting on.
There you go.
You know, you fall into thatcategory.
There's another one.
Um, when you went back low, actually let me backpedal a

(01:57:54):
little bit.
When you walk while we'rewalking out of the store, do you

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (01:57:56):
steering brick.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:57:57):
were kicking yourself at all?
Like, and, and why didn't younot just go back in that stay?
Do you think's working?
You knew she there

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:58:09):
I don't, I don't know.
I don't have a good, good
I think sometimes we even find the
excuses.
I would, but oh, my shift is
I don't think that's even what was
on my head.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:58:20):
you know?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (01:58:20):
I just, that was it.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:58:21):
And I think all of us, so many of me
and my friends, I can think attimes we found someone
attractive.
And why did we not say anything?
Whether it was asking for thenumber, saying your cue,
whatever.
When you went back for BlackFriday, even though you had a
really good reason to be store, did you still have like
butterflies in your stomach orwas it so you were a little
scared but you acted on it

(01:58:42):
And an audience, there's like a
whole crowd of people behind mewaiting to get checked out.
And there must have heard, heardwhat I was saying to her.
Or maybe they're not payingattention.
But in my head I'm like,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:58:52):
must
part number.
You

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (01:58:53):
you think everyone's listening?
Yep.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (01:58:56):
So now you

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (01:58:57):
back on that situa situation of, I
literally met my wife by, youknow, acting on this regret.
Do you feel like since then, whether

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (01:59:07):
whether

Microphone (Scarlet (01:59:08):
consciously or subconsciously, have you ever
treated like real time decisionsdifferently?
Like you see yourself sayingsomething where normally you
wouldn't because you had thatregret and like, did, did it,
did it change the way you've,you've acted in real time, in
real sit, like in situations, ifthat makes sense.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (01:59:29):
Yeah, I was gonna say earlier, like
current meat would've.
It's not, I don't, I wouldn'tsay it's necessarily because of
that moment, but I just feellike I've grown to a point where
I really believe that like thatnever and conscious of something
you could have done better ifit's right for me.

(01:59:50):
Sometimes that's, uh, a fulllight in the house that I walk
past before I go to bed, andit's like that.
It's like little things likethat,
Yeah.
like, okay, think would have gone

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (02:00:21):
There's so many of us who like, it's
hard to say, well, have I missedout on my, because I didn't act,
you know, in your case you werein a really good situation
because back in attempt torectify the situation, and even
if she wasn't there on black.

(02:00:41):
back again and been Christmasfor my brother, for Sean or, um,
so in your case, but if it'slike someone you met bar at the
barber shop, even the way I lookat this podcast is I've tried to
be better.
I was at, um, cut my teethcleaned a couple weeks ago, and
the dental hygienist thatcleaned him was the first person

(02:01:04):
where she, we had a reallyinteresting conversation about
gut health and just like thingsI never would've thought that
your teeth affected.
And so afterwards I just, I justasked the question.
I was like, Hey, I have thispodcast.
It's technically about business, fitness, culture, health falls
under fitness.
Would you want to come on and dolike a tooth episode?

(02:01:24):
And then we could talk about guthealth and, and just see where
it goes?
And she said, yeah.
And in that case, like the onlyway I, I guess I could go back
too and I could be like, uh, canI talk to this?
But I'm glad I just ripped thebandaid off and was just like,
can you, will you just come be aguest on the show?
You know?
And I, I w I now look at thosesituations and realize that

(02:01:45):
Youngme would've got supernervous and the worst case
scenario would've been stabbedme.
It's not a scallop, eh,

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (02:01:56):
Scalpel.
scalpel.
Thank you.
No.
Worst case scenario.
She's like, uh, no awkwardschedule David with someone else
in the six months when he comesback.
That's worst case scenario.
Yeah.
Best case scenario, dude, I gotan awesome guest on.
She's very articulate, very arwell spoken.
She's coming on on the 15th.
I can't wait to there.
I think it's gonna be greatepisode.

(02:02:17):
And now I can live withoutregret because I just acted on
it.
So that's how I'm trying to goabout my life.
Like those little moments whereyou quick decision to make a
five seconds to decide, do I getup from the chair and leave the
dental office or do I just askher and see what says?
I'm trying to lean into thatmore of just, just ask.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:02:36):
About you on the plane and you got
that.
Her life just like throws these, you got guess, but try to keep
myself in good mental health andstay ready.

(02:03:00):
Take advantage of thosesituations, right?
Sometimes you can't go back.
Like I said, it's better latethan ever and you could've gone
back, gone differently.
Come back and say, Hey, you knowwhat?
I was thinking we had a greatconversation and maybe she
doesn't say yes.
You know?
So try to be, um, I think whenyou're like really living in the

(02:03:21):
moment and being yourself andrecognize these moments and full
advantage and

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (02:03:29):
The
the over.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:03:31):
theme book that I mentioned, the Power
of Regret, is that it teaches usall a lesson.
See, we were talking aboutearlier, you sharpened your
blade in that moment.
You know, it was a, a lesson oflike, man, I should have just
asked her for now.
Hopefully someone else listensto like, no, like my buddy
Jordan, he's Knight.

(02:03:51):
A couple months from now, he'llsee some attractive and ask you,
learn from your regrets.
So I love that the book tookthat perspective and we were
talking about that earlier, tolooking at your regrets and how
they're, they're powerful.
They're not mistakes.
Don't, don't, you know, mentallywhiplash yourself over these
things.
Like learn from it, live more inthe moment and just take those

(02:04:11):
as little life lessons.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (02:04:15):
I really believe that nothing has
to be back on that moment.
Positive

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:04:31):
Last question for you.
I think feel win free.
you.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (02:04:46):
I'm not being serious, but as I was
looking through it, if there'sany local ladies or guys, anyone
that finds men at.
In Austin, you should check outfaded underscore by underscore
faded

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:05:02):
under pictures and

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (02:05:03):
pictures of handsome men.
But then I was wondering, arethey handsome?
Because handsome because gotfaded by Phil.
I don't know.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:05:14):
like to think I

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:05:14):
maybe they were ugly before.
I'm, I'm kidding.
I was so mean.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (02:05:19):
You seen that picture of me that you
showed right before.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:05:21):
did.
You were looking rough, buddy.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:05:24):
yeah, that's, that's the difference
between getting a date and notfor sure.
Maybe you should just take that one,
put that at the top.
But no, I love the year beforeand afters.
Man.
Those were so good.
Even for the guys that weren'tnecessarily looking rough, like
you were, the, the before andafters were just so, I really
did enjoy thumbing through yourhowever long

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (02:05:44):
it.
Maybe I can just put a little,uh, on every post, just have a
taken box and just so thatpeople can

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (02:05:50):
I did.
That's what I'm saying.
Yes.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:05:52):
There you go.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (02:05:52):
You could use like, the green check
if they're, if they're single, like green check means Okay,
good to go, go ahead and messagethem.
Or if it's like the, the redcircle with the line, there's
how do I monetize

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:06:05):
like, yeah.
You know, every time someone, maybe they have to click to
unlock if there's a check or ablock and every time they click
you get a, you know, a dollar

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (02:06:16):
dollar.
Yeah.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (02:06:17):
or whatever the

Microphone (Scarlett (02:06:18):
Something with that.
Something to that.
That's, I, I've said it in theshop plenty of times, like the
only reason we have a job isbecause it's significant.
Others have anybody, you weretrying to look good for it.
You're not going to the barcode.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (02:06:39):
I'm not thinking about, as I started
filming this, I'm thinking aboutit.
I don't think you're ever gonnacatch me recording an episode,
and I'm not slamming on jeansand t-shirts, but like, I like
to carry myself in a certain, soI'll probably start getting the
beard, might even start shavingthe head twice a week

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (02:07:02):
myself.
I don't

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:07:03):
know.
I think there's a, there is likea confidence to it, you know, I,
even if it's, I don't even wantthe person on the other end of
the camera to find me attractiveor anything like that.
It's more of like, if I'mputting my out there,

Microphone (Scarlett (02:07:18):
confidence

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:07:19):
just want to, I want myself to look
good.
I don't know, is that bad?
look good, valuable.
It's something that I read theway I dress in the barbershop,
the man subconscious, you know, bar based on man, you have every

(02:07:55):
chance to really prove who youactually are, but important.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (02:08:11):
I chose you because you had a
beard.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:08:15):
Good reason that all a lot of people
do.
Who?
Who's, who's?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:08:16):
who's?
Your, your, um, I feel so bad.
I didn't write down his name.
Who's your

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:08:20):
your coworker?

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (02:08:20):
The one that was 16.
We met
one that Jordan.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (02:08:23):
Jordan, yeah.
I looked at his picture and Iwas like, nah.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:08:25):
nah.
And

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (02:08:26):
Jordan, if you ever listened

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (02:08:27):
to this,
no offense to you, but like, I
wanted, it's like the wholereason I told the story earlier
that I like the guy in the suit.
I was like, oh, I would dresslike that.
Plus you're bald and I don't seeany blood.
So you must be decent at yourjob.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:08:43):
I'll say, just as a record, Jordan
Tram, he, he is good.
Yeah, he good.
Did he get

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (02:08:48):
in that before and after picture I
showed you?
Oh, that's right.
You mentioned that you only, you

Microphone (Scarlett (02:08:54):
mentioned you

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (02:08:55):
wouldn't let someone else.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:08:56):
I've let Jordan, uh, dude, would you
let me forever do a, you know,it's just too, too important for
my, uh, for my, uh, image, formy shop brand, you know, beard
to Barber.
I got a have look solid beard.
I can't remember.
It would

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB) (02:09:08):
a strange barbershop if it was
called the bearded barber

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:09:11):
hope he has a beard.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (02:09:12):
was a hundred percent clean shaven.
Like no mustaches, no, nonothing.
Just

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:09:17):
like that's a red flag.
Clean

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:09:18):
shaven kids.
Not kids, men, you know, beardedbarber.
Yeah.
We can do beards.
Come on in.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:09:24):

Well, that same note, I guess.
Great Clips is a littlemisleading,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:09:35):
Great.
But people go to

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:09:39):
them, people go, you know,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:09:41):
like you said, it's, they are,
They are

Microphone (Scarlett 6 (02:09:44):
reaching the demographic of cheap fast.
If that's your priority.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 USB (02:09:49):
re this is

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 US (02:09:49):
not cheap.
And this not fast.
I, this I, when you were done, Ifelt more confident.
I felt I was happy.
I looked at it and I was like, fuck Yeah.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 (02:10:05):
like, fuck,

Microphone (Scarlett 6i (02:10:07):

ass already.

Microphone (Scarlett 6i6 U (02:10:15):
