(00:00):
Hey, it's Dennis Davis here oniHeartRadio Eagle ninety two point nine. Were
joined by David Lee Murphy. Welcometo the show. Hey Dannis, good
morning, Hey, good morning. One of the biggest songs that you ever
produced, Dust on the Bottle. That was a massive hit, And just
for context, I want to talkabout how that was put out in the

(00:22):
nineties and nineties. There was alot of legendary country artists, legendary songs
that were put out. When itcomes to like almost the Mount Rushmore of
nineties country, you would be oneof the faces on that Mount Rushmore.
I was wondering what was life likefor you in the nineties and take us
through that journey in the nineties. It was a blast, man, Country

(00:47):
music was it was so fun. It's still fun, but in the nineties
there was just something going on andit was a lifestyle thing, you know,
and every almost every town had abig country bar, and you know,
there was a lot of dancing andit was just it was a blast.
And man, there was some greatartists in the nineties, and you

(01:08):
know, Alman Jackson and Garth andBrooks and Dunn and Clint Black just tons
of guys, but and girls, and uh, the thing was, it
was just it was a fun timefor music, and it was a great
time to learn about writing country songsand just playing in country bands and being

(01:29):
all over running all over the country. And you had a lot of big
hits in the nineties and really whatthree albums that you put out with MCA
Nashville during that time, So itwas a very busy decade for you.
Yeah. Well, we had PartyCrowd in ninety five and that was the
some the must play country some ofthe year that year. And then we

(01:51):
came out with Dust on the Bottleand then we had Out with a Bang
and Roche Loupahon and over and abunch of those things. But it was
a great It was just a greatfung period of time. And h I
really had a blast. We're onwith David Lee Murphy, country star and
legendary songwriter. I wanted to talkabout songwriting. There was there was a

(02:15):
point where you kind of pivoted bythe two thousands, you made the decision
to really focus on songwriting, andhow did you arrive at that decision?
I mean it worked out great. You put out a lot of brilliant lyrics
during that time. Take us throughthat, well, you know I did,
honestly, I don't think I reallyconsciously did. I mean did that
on purpose. I just started Iput out I had a song called Loco

(02:40):
that came out in two thousand fouror five or something like that, and
I had been writing, and I'vebeen writing for other artists and then,
h I think what really kicked itin the high gear was Kenny recorded one
of my songs on one of hisearlier albums, and then he recorded Kenny
Chesney recorded Living in Fast Forward, and from there it just a lot of

(03:08):
people started cutting my songs and itwas really cool. I mean, I
was out on the rug playing gigs. I didn't I wasn't necessarily putting records
out at that time. I wasstill writing songs, but I would I
didn't. I wasn't actively killing myselfout there on the road trying to,
you know, promote a record. And it just got to be where I

(03:30):
just kind of laid back and enjoyed, like my kids being around and being
at home a little bit more. And that's just what happened. And I
just started writing all these other songsfor my friends and and that's just that's
how it happened. You have somereally big friends, because I was looking

(03:50):
at where You've written songs for somemassive artists, guys like Jason al Dean
Blake, Shelton Thompson, Square Brooks, and Done, Kenny Chesney, Hank
Williams Junior you partnered with on asong. The list really goes on.
It is a very comprehensive, thoroughlist of who's who in country music.

(04:11):
It's just impressive. I mean, well, what do you say about that?
Well, I would just I meanI was fortunate and blessed and uh,
you know, all that stuff rolledup into one. I spend a
long time writing songs. I mean, that's that's like my hobby and my
job at the same time. Andso I mean every day I write songs,

(04:35):
and I either write songs with peopleyou know other songwriters, are by
myself or with an artist, andI just, uh, you know,
I spent last week I wrote asong with Kenny Chesney, and you know
it's uh, I write just allthe time. And that's just kind of
how it all happens. I havean interesting what if for you, What

(05:00):
if all of these cool tools thatexist today were around, say in the
nineties, when you were fairly youngin your career, things like YouTube,
social media. How how is themusic game different now? And the recipe
for finding success as a country artist? How's it different now versus what it

(05:25):
was like when you were cutting yourteeth in the industry? Well back in
those days, I mean when Imean, everything was based around selling records,
you know, so and a lotof times the record company had a
hard time getting songs out to thestores because there were so many stores out

(05:45):
there, and you know, itwas a really complex, you know business
trying to sell records. Nowadays, you can stream stuff on you know,
streaming services, and you can buystuff just off the computer. So it
would have been a lot it wouldhave been a lot different. I mean,

(06:08):
it's like dust on the bottle stillgets like a million streams a week,
which is like bye standards is likesome of the younger people a million
streams of weeks not that big adeal, But for people back in our
day in the nineties, that's crazy. So, I mean, it would

(06:29):
have been a lot different. Andthat's that was ninety five minutes, twenty
whatever it is. We're excited tohave you come into Florence Big concert coming
up September ninth a Carolina bank Field. Real quick, how did you get

(06:51):
Mac, How did you and GeorgeBurge connect to do this concert? Uh?
Well, George and our friends.I don't really know exactly how they
made a correlation. I've written withGeorge and back when when they put a

(07:12):

He's really talented artist, and I'mlooking forward to getting out there. I
