Design Over Drinks is an interview style podcast aiming to be a forum for emerging designers to talk about our philosophies, trends, experiences, successes, failures, diversity, advocacy, predictions, and everything in between. Why over drinks? Because designers often have a beverage in hand. Whether its a hot coffee or chai to start the day, or a glass of wine with coworkers to end it. A kombucha, or bubble tea, even that trusty bottle of water as we go from meeting to emails, to 30 minutes of actual work. We always have a hand for a drink. I started this podcast when Covid-19 hit in 2020. I spent a lot of time listening to the giants of design talk about what they predicted the future to be like, and how our profession will adapt as our world changes. Although that is important, I felt disconnected from the designer who is doing the production work, the designer who had to adapt because their schooling was like no others. I wanted to talk to the designer who will be the potential "giant" of the future. I like being a designer, but I love to talk about it more. My younger self hoped to someday be an art curator and a philosopher. In a way this is how I still hope to do just that. This episode is a doozy. A mega episode if you will. This one covers a lot and am grateful to have good friend Amanda Kratochvil along for this one as we discuss the ways Interior Design is represented in TV and Movies. We also get some insight from some other designers who were inspired to become designers by DIY TV. I had such fun talking about the way pop culture has shaped the publics perception of what we do, and how we want...
We’ve got some new episodes coming your way, including our first Design & Pop Culture, and more in our Deep Dive Series!

Gayle is a designer at HOK, and current IIDA NPC Board member, which is how we met. She is super passionate about sustainability, and we have some great conversation around that subject on this episode! We talk about her experience at Philly U/Thomas Jefferson U, working and volunteering for IIDA on the east coast, and that we both lived in the NYC/NJ area reminisce about the things we miss from there, and of course, her work here ...
Emily and I were connected through pod guest, and friend Peter. This ended up being a really great conversation. We talk about what it is like to be freelance designers, her schooling at University of Oregon, her summer working for AmeriCorps and Habitat for Humanity, plus geek out about theatre for a bit. Enjoy!

Katie is such a generous and genuine person. She and I crossed paths a few times but really got to talking during my last NeoCon. Interior Design is her second career, and she went forward knowing how and where she wanted to work. Doing just that now, we talk about that journey, and much more.
Also, I’m so loud again in this episode, ugh, sorry!

This episodes’ designer, Kimiya Khezri, resides in Vancouver, BC. We will talk about her schooling and work life as an Interior Designer in Canada, her journey as a residential designer and what drives her designs.

Nicole is another talented designer I know through IIDA. I’ve had the benefit of seeing her portfolio grow, and am excited for you all to hear about her experience in college during the lockdown, her internships, her business and marketing background, and her design journey.
Note: There are some volume/sound issues in my audio early on in this episode but resolve by the time we get through the first few minutes.
