Hey everyone, welcome back toDifferently.
I'm so excited to have BethSandlin back with me today and
you can go back and listen.
Beth's been on at least acouple times, I think.
It's Move Differently, which islike episode 158, revitalize
(00:46):
your Routine and then theself-care strategy that sparks
lasting growth.
So she's not new to the podcastand we're excited to share
really just talk about, I think,a season that we both have been
navigating of uncertainty andpivots and moving through growth
and the discomfort of all ofthat, and we were inspired to
come together and talk aboutthat and share an exciting event
(01:09):
for you in a little bit.
So welcome, beth.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Thanks so much, Carla
.
So happy to be back here again.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yes, I'm excited to
be doing this together and
collaborating on something.
So let's start with Beth.
I know writing and movementhave had such a big impact in
your life and I think the lasttime we connected, you started
to tell me a story and I'm like,oh, you have to share that on
the podcast, so share how thosetwo things have collided for you
(01:38):
and made a difference.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Yeah, it's
interesting because my practice
with both exercise or, if youwant to just swap out the word
movement for that, journaling oryou can swap out writing has
definitely been a themeconsistently throughout my life
and as we talked more I'vereally acknowledged how valuable
it is beyond kind of theobvious, which is exercise is
(02:01):
good for physical health andsometimes writing.
We write to do lists right andthat keeps us on track.
But there's other elements, everything from when I had
cancer and I was journalingabout that in my hospital bed,
to I was at the age of 37 and onmy treadmill and I just said
the statement I'm doingsomething differently than in
(02:22):
coming up in this next year, andthat was my big first pivot
away from what I was doing atthe time working full time,
transitioning into the onlinespace, teaching Pilates.
And as we were talking, I thinkI shared a practice that I'm
currently doing which iscombining the two of having an
(02:43):
evening practice with Pilatesusually very short, either
stretch based or really gentlemovements and I pair that with
journaling.
Sometimes I do the journalingafter, other times before.
That's where I'm not too rigidwith the structure.
It's what I feel would be mostbeneficial and it's been
absolutely incredible, becauseone time we had a conversation
(03:05):
and I think I claimed I'm justso inconsistent with journaling.
It comes up and then it, youknow, I kind of leave it to the
wayside and I think what I'veacknowledged is for me, having
that inconsistency, or doing itjust in different ways, is
incredibly helpful for what ismy passion and motivation.
(03:25):
It helped me come up with thename trifecta Pilates, like I
wrote about that a lot beforecoming up with trifecta as the
inspiration.
And so this event that we'refocusing on I'm just super
excited about it because it'sbringing our own passion and I
know that you also not only havean expertise in journaling and
(03:46):
facilitating that, but you havea really strong movement
practice as well.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
I do and I think you
know, in these times I feel like
so many people are navigatinguncertainty and maybe some fear
and some doubt or making afeeling like their business is
going to change and they need tomake a pivot.
And I feel like so often whenwe're in these periods of times
we can really get at least Iknow myself and my clients we
can get up in our head and juststart kind of spin in your head
(04:15):
which can create a lot of extraunease and discomfort that we
actually have control over.
And I think for me that the actof writing has been so powerful
in my life to help me actuallyget out of my head.
And then the practice ofmovement sometimes even, you
(04:35):
know, know I need to move mybody to get out of my head, like
to literally get bring theenergy into my whole body
instead of just up here.
And I think that in this, inthese times of uncertainty, or
we're making a pivot or we'retrying to make a decision or we
need to make that big, bold, bold move.
But we're feeling all thefeelings right.
(04:58):
Sometimes there's a waitingperiod and we can feel powerless
in the waiting, like especiallyfor doers and high achievers.
It's hard to wait, and I thinkthat how we wait really matters,
and when we can be intentionalin the waiting, it makes a huge
difference.
And I think that movement andwriting are two things that we
(05:22):
can do, you know, on their own,but also combined together in
the waiting, that can actuallyhelp us, you know, feel like
we're making progress orreceiving clarity or sometimes
just making peace with what isright.
So, yes, I think that this isso powerful to combine these two
(05:45):
, I feel like just tools that weboth have used in our lives for
a long time and bring those tolike, really let people
experience them.
Right, we were talking aboutlearning, about journaling,
learning about Pilates orwhatever kind of movement, but
actually doing it, and that'swhat we're going to invite you
all to do with us.
(06:06):
Beth, is there anything elsethat you want to add around the
connection between like movementand moving through times of
growth or change?
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, I think that
sometimes with journaling or
just even in our head, it feelslike we get stuck.
When it comes to, you know, creativity, change or even being
productive, working inalignment, that getting away is
incredibly helpful.
And many times they think ofgetting away as a big vacation
(06:43):
for a reset and that is just notpractical on a weekly basis for
most of us, nor definitely on adaily basis.
And that's where movement hasreally been helpful to get away,
clearing the mind.
Lots of times people will sayin a shower.
I have this idea, that'sbeautiful.
I can't be in a shower all daylong.
(07:04):
And what I've noticed is whenI'm moving my body whether it's
getting outside for a short walkor stepping on my Pilates mat
and really focusing on themovement of my body that even
though I'm not thinking aboutwhat I just did with work or
what I'm trying to work throughthat many times afterwards my
(07:25):
nervous system has a chance toreset.
And then there's that moment ofinspiration or clarity which,
for me, many times I have to gowrite it down, otherwise I will
forget exactly what I was soclear on, and I believe that's
really the power of the twotogether and sometimes it makes
sense to focus a little bit moreon one than the other, and I
(07:47):
think it also makes sense whenis it about a pause.
You know when is it about, rather than you know, continuing
to journal about it whatactions can be helpful to move
forward?
And movement, innately, isaction based.
We are, putting you know, walking or moving through the
(08:08):
body, and I think that is avaluable asset that we don't
consider for movement, and it'sone of the reasons why that
research is now starting to showthat exercise is good for
mental health, just likejournaling is.
It's a different tool, it's adifferent resource that can be
used, actually improves focusand concentration, and that's
(08:29):
what's so exciting about wherewe are right now is we can lean
on tools and resources for manyreasons.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
I love that.
I think I mentioned to you thatI have been going to a new
Pilates studio and doing adifferent kind of Pilates and
it's been so good because when Igo into that room I don't think
about anything else because I'mlearning new teachers and new
(09:01):
cues and I find that I don'tthink about anything else but
listening to the instructor andkind of following the lead, and
it's actually rest for my brain, and then I do.
I think our bodies work thingsout when we let our brain rest
and it's so counterintuitive tosomeone who is used to doing a
(09:22):
lot of thinking or in their head, a lot.
But we're going to, beth and Iare going to invite you to come
do this with us, like, experience it for yourself.
And I think that's one of theother things we talked about
before we give them the detailsis that, like, leadership begins
right here with us, and I think, whether you're leading your
(09:42):
business or a family or you know, whatever it is in your life
that you're leading, often weare so focused on showing up for
everybody else, but we have toremember that it starts right
here, and if we're not groundedand centered, it's really hard
to lead others, and so this is agift that you give yourself,
(10:02):
and we're going to invite you tocome play with us.
Do you want to share thedetails?
Sure.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
So it is both a
movement practice and journaling
practice.
We're combining, I feel, thebest of both worlds.
So I'll be leading the movementpractice, carlo will be leading
the journaling reflection andwill begin with an intention
setting as well.
We have decided to call thisBrave Bodies, bold Minds, and
(10:32):
are just so excited that we canlean into this experience
together, in connection, collaboration with each other
and also with you who will beattending.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
Amazing.
So this is a virtual event, soyou don't have to be anywhere at
a specific physical location.
We will put all theregistration in the show notes.
This is happening on Saturday, june 21st, at 12 pm Eastern.
You'll bring a notebook andkind of have a space where you
(11:05):
can move your body.
But are there any other thingsthey need to bring?
Speaker 2 (11:10):
If they have a
cushion, that amazing, if not
just something they'recomfortable with.
Even your carpets fine, or rollout a blanket.
So I'll be teaching a movementsession that doesn't require any
additional equipment, justcomfortable clothing.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Perfect and it's free
.
So we invite you to come hangout with us, experience these
tools.
I feel like we all need toolsright now, and so we want to
share our favorite tools withyou.
And again, we'll put all thelink in the show notes.
But if you're navigatingsomething, bring your life,
bring a challenge, bringsomething you're navigating to
the session and we expect thatyou're going to have some sort
of breakthrough in just movingthrough these tools with us.
(11:52):
So we're excited and honored tobe hosting this.
And again, save your spot andthe link is in the show notes.
Thank you, beth, for joiningtogether to do this and for
being here today, and um, a linkto Beth's website and
everything else will be there aswell.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
And thanks so much,
carl.
Yes, thanks so much, carl.
I'm just so excited for thisand we have been working on this
for quite some time and justgetting towards this final stage
of actually putting everythingthat we have been talking about
and yes, writing about and I'vebeen thinking about this after
my Pilates practice before andwalking like having this come to
(12:33):
fruition is absolutelyincredible and we'll be so
honored for anyone who'slistening to join in.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
Yes, so see you on
Saturday, june 21st.
Have an amazing day.
