Boaz, through his wise plan, revealed in an indisputable way that he was the only true redeemer that could redeem Ruth. He didn’t act carelessly or casually in regard to Ruth’s request. Instead, he took her seriously, committing all of his resources to the task of securing her redemption.

Jesus showed by His incarnation, life, death, resurrection, and ascension that He was the only redeemer capable of redeeming humankind. He showed Himself to be unique in every way; fully God and fully man. The uniqueness of His person, His work, His plan, His love, and His sacrifice is indisputable, and this picture is beautifully captured and foreshadowed in the story of Ruth and Boaz.

Unknown (00:06):
Welcome to drippings from the honeycomb, the official
podcast of Another 12ministries. We are so glad that
you have decided to join us aswe enjoy the sweetness of God's
word, one verse at a time.
Welcome to episode four of ourjourney through the book of
Ruth, as we take a look at theChristmas story, the story of

(00:27):
Jesus through this incredibleOld Testament book and we look
to see the parallels that Godgave to His people and to us of
the coming Messiah of theredeemer in the Old Testament.
Now, in the last episode, weleft Ruth with Boaz, on the
threshing floor, where Ruth hadpetitioned Boaz to redeem her

(00:49):
to, in her words, spread hiswings over her in protection to
take her as his wife, and toraise up a line to her dead
husband to Elimelech, the deadhusband of Naomi so that that
line wouldn't die out. The goalwas to perpetuate that line to
keep it going to keep theinheritance within the family,
and ultimately from that linewould come the Messiah. So we

(01:12):
can see that this whole story isbuilding to a central theme that
God is defending the line thathis son will come from. And this
is such a beautiful picture ofGod's sovereignty, interrupting
human history, and orchestratinghuman history and guiding
everything that goes on in humanhistory for His own glory and
for his own purposes. And whenRuth left the threshing floor,

(01:36):
Boaz gave her a lavish Gift ofGrain, it was kind of like a
wedding present, I'm going tomake this happen, don't worry,
I'm going to take care of thismatter. And to show you that I'm
serious about it. I'm going togive you this large Gift of
Grain this provision thisindication that I will be
providing for you from thispoint forward and for your

(01:58):
mother in law. And the realityof this is confirmed by the
reaction of Naomi When Ruthcomes back from the threshing
floor in the morning, and she'sgot this very lavish gift from
bow as have ample provision forNaomi and Ruth, Naomi points out
that the kinsman redeemer Boazhas accepted her request that he
will see to the matter that day.

(02:21):
In other words, this is ofutmost importance to bow, as
Naomi understand, understandsthat he's not going to sit on
this, he's not going to forgetabout it. He's not going to let
a lot of time pass. He is goingto deal with this today.
However, in the conversationthat Boaz and Ruth have on the
threshing floor when Boazresponds to Ruth's request for

(02:42):
redemption, Boaz notes that heis not the first redeemer in
line to potentially redeem Ruthand Naomi, there is another
family member who is also aredeemer who actually has the
first right of refusal. On thisredemption. He has the first
claim. So if Boaz wants toredeem Ruth, if Boaz wants to be

(03:03):
the one who steps into the shoesas the Redeemer, he is going to
have to act shrewdly to actintelligently, so that he can
get the other Redeemer to giveup his claim. And so there's a
little more to this matter thaninitially meets the eye. It's
going to take some doing to makethis all come about and yet Boaz

(03:23):
does have the attitude that heknows how to get this done. He
has given this gift to Ruth, heis on the warpath, so to speak.
Of I am going to be the RedeemerI am going to get this done.
There is an obstacle in my way,but that doesn't stop me. I'm
going to still accomplish myplan. And he does exactly what
Naomi predicted he would do. Heimmediately goes up to the city

(03:46):
gates, and he takes a wholebunch of people with him that
are significant leaders in thecity elders in the city, 10 men,
he wants this to be wellwitnessed. He doesn't want any
challenge to his redemption, ifhe is able to make this happen
and redeem Ruth, there will beno challenge whatsoever. He

(04:06):
wants to make sure thateverything is done legally,
everything is done precisely andthat no one will ever be able to
contest the fact that he was theredeemer in the future. So Boaz
gathers these men, he goes tothe city center, he waits for
this other Redeemer to pass by,and when he does, he grabs him.
And he says, Hey, come overhere. I want to talk to you

(04:28):
about something. Naomi has comeback, Naomi is selling a piece
of land. Now Boaz shows hisintelligence and his creativity
in the way he presents this tothe primary Redeemer, the one
who's claimed supersedes him, hepresents the land first. Land
was extremely valuable in thefirst century. It's still
valuable today. But even more soback then because the

(04:51):
inheritance was allotted tofamily so to be able to buy and
redeem an inheritance meant thatthis property would stay with
that Redeemer. permanently, itwould stay within the line of
that Redeemer. And that'sdifferent from simply purchasing
land. Because if you purchasedland in Israel, at the year of
Jubilee, which happened every 50years, all the land returned to

(05:13):
the family that had originallyinherited it. So the reality in
Israel with buying and sellingland was actually that it was
more bought and sold for aperiod of time. In fact, the way
land was valued in Israel isthat the value was calculated
based on the number of yearsuntil the Jubilee until this
land would have to go back toits original family of

(05:35):
inheritance. And God had made itthis way, because God said,
Look, I actually own all theland in Israel, I give it to you
to steward for me, but the landbelongs to me. And so I want it
to always reset back to itsoriginal boundary lines every 50
years. That way, no family findsitself without an inheritance in

(05:55):
Israel. Now, for the buyer ofthe land, this might not have
been such great news because youbought the land, you eventually
had to give it back. And that'swhy God set stipulations for how
the value should be tabulatedfor parcels of land within
Israel. But for a family thatwas struggling a family that was
destitute, a family that hadfallen on hard times. This was
very good news, because it meantthat within at least one or

(06:18):
maybe two generations, yourfamily was going to get its
original inheritance back, yourfamily was going to be restored.
You were never more than 49years away from a restoration.
And that is a big, big deal, especially in the ancient world.
But this land sale is different.
This land sale is not a sale, itis a redemption, the parcel of
land that is redeemed thatbelonged to Naomi and Elimelech

(06:41):
will stay with the Redeemer andhis descendants forever. Now,
the interesting thing here isBoaz presents this as a
redemption of Naomi. And that'scritical to understand that he
does that first because heexplains that Naomi is selling
the piece of land forredemption, Naomi is beyond

(07:02):
childbearing years. And sothere's no chance of a
compromised inheritance for thepurchaser buying from Naomi,
Naomi cannot raise up a new lineto Elimelech her dead husband,
so whoever buys it will have tocare for Naomi, but that's no
problem, because when they onlypasses away, that land will move
into the Redeemers inheritanceand go to any children that he

(07:26):
had from his original marriage.
That means that his familyestate will be enlarged
permanently. So the way Bo haspresented initially, this is an
excellent opportunity, it issomething that the first
Redeemer would definitely wantto take advantage of.

(07:46):
And he does, he immediatelysays, I will redeem it. And then
bow has springs the second partof this on him, he explains that
if he redeems the land, he mustalso take Ruth, the Moabite is
the Gentile as his wife. NowRuth is young enough to bear
children. And so theresponsibility will be expected

(08:09):
of the Redeemer that he mustraise up a line to Elimelech. By
revealing this, Boaz changes theentire picture. Now it looks
like a financial windfall forthe Redeemer is actually a loss,
because he will have to raise upa second line of generations and
that land that he buys won't goto his initial inheritance, it

(08:30):
will be split and stay with theheirs that Ruth yields to him.
In other words, the money thathe spends on that field will
come out of the inheritance thatwas going to go to the children
from his first marriagepermanently, because that land
will never leave the descendantsthat he has with Ruth. On top of

(08:52):
that he will have to be unitedin marriage to a Gentile woman,
he will have to take thatposition of scorn within Israel
that he is married to a Gentilewoman. And that is not really
lessened by the fact that he istaking up a redemptive part of
Leverett marriage, he is stillgoing to be looked down upon, he
is still going to have to endurethe fact that his children by

(09:15):
that union will only be halfJewish, they will be half
Moabites as well. And that leadsus to the verse that we're going
to look at in detail, which isRuth for six, and it reads, then
the Redeemer said, I cannotredeem it for myself, lest I
impair my own inheritance. Takemy right of redemption yourself,
for I cannot redeem it. You see,Boaz knew that he was the only

(09:41):
one who could really redeemRuth. But he had to carefully
execute his plan in such a waythat he positioned himself to be
the only eligible Redeemer JesusChrist, position himself by
coming to earth humble andlowly. by taking on the form of
his servant by living a perfectlife by dying a death in the

(10:05):
place of humanity as the perfectsacrifice by enduring God's
wrath, positioned himself as theonly viable Redeemer for lost
human race. See the first manAdam brought death through his
actions, and he was unable tooffer up anything that could
have redeemed him or his futuregenerations, Adam could not do

(10:29):
anything Adam's death would notavail anything, Adam was in a
position where even if heoffered himself up as a
sacrifice, all that would dowould be to destroy his
inheritance. In other words, ifAdam had committed the sin of
eating the forbidden fruit inthe garden of Eden, and then
immediately killed himself, inan attempt to undo the

(10:49):
sinfulness, said, I'm going tosacrifice myself so that sin
will perish from the earth. See,that wouldn't have availed
anything because he would havejust impaired his inheritance.
In other words, there would havebeen no children born to him and
Eve, and the human race wouldhave ended before it began. He
was not in a position to redeemanyone, he couldn't even redeem
himself. But Jesus, on the otherhand, had the ability had the

(11:14):
means and had the opportunity ofredemption, just like Boaz.
That's what we're seeing here.
That's how we see the picture ofwhat was to come. We see this
reflection of our redeemer inthe book of Ruth, no one else
was fit to redeem a lost andfallen world. Just like in the
story of Ruth and Boaz, no oneelse was fit to redeem Ruth, it

(11:37):
was going to be Boaz or no oneelse, even though the initial
reaction from the other Redeemerwas, yes, I'll redeem it, when
he found out that the redemptionincluded redeeming the line of
Elimelech that was cut off notjust buying the property, but
actually redeeming andcontinuing the line, he realized
he was no longer in a positionto execute that redemption. And

(12:01):
so he had to withdraw himself asa Redeemer. He was not a
redeemer, because he was notactually capable of redeeming
that line. He was not capable ofraising up a new line. And this
picture is an amazingforeshadowing of the surpassing
uniqueness of Jesus Christ,Jesus Christ, fully man, fully

(12:25):
God, born of a virgin, fulfilling the prophecies,
living a perfect life, honoringGod in every way, exhibiting the
power of divinity, dying asacrificial death for something
he wasn't guilty for taking thesin of the world upon him and
bearing the wrath of God in Himand then rising again to life
and ascending to the Father, toprepare a place for us with a

(12:48):
promise that he'll return. He isunique. And Boaz is in an
extremely small way, a pictureof that incredible uniqueness.
See, through the story of Boazand Ruth, we get to see that the
Redeemer, the true Redeemer fromGod, was going to be unique.
There was only going to be onethere weren't going to be 50

(13:12):
messiahs, all of whom might beable to perform the work, there
weren't going to be 10 messiahsare five messiahs, or three
messiahs or even two Messiahs.
There was one Messiah, one Sonof God, he was going to make it
very plain who he was, theevidence of who he was, was
going to be undeniable, and hewas going to take up the

(13:35):
redemption of his people, no oneelse, because no one else had
the ability. No one else had theresources. No one else had the
opportunity, and no one else hadthe willingness to redeem the
entire world and to bear thewrath of God. Only Jesus Christ,
the true kinsman redeemer, coulddo what he did for us. So as you

(13:58):
celebrate this Christmas season, focus on the uniqueness of Jesus
Christ, the fact that he aloneis the one who could be the
Redeemer. He invalidated allother claims to being a
redeemer. To be sure there weremany false messiahs before
Jesus, just like there have beenmany false Christs since he

(14:20):
came, but He alone is the onlyone who was able and not only
was he able, but he was willing, and he did everything he came to
do and he accomplished salvationfor his people.
