Sin has a root cause. God knew this, and He continually warned the children of Israel to be on guard against it. Jesus understood this and taught His disciples accordingly. The apostles consistently cautioned their churches about this root cause, and here in James, we see a faithful pastor echoing the same warning to his followers.

The root of all sin is self-idolatry. James asserts that from a heart consumed with self-worship comes “every vile practice.” Selfishness, self-centeredness, self-worship—take your pick—they all convey the same idea and lead to the same disastrous results. The truth is that the heart of man longs to worship itself, which is contrary to the very purpose for which it was created. In doing so, it becomes vulnerable to the horror and destructiveness of sin.

No one can serve two masters. James reaffirms the truth taught by Jesus: to serve self is to reject God.
