Carrie Saunders (00:01):
If you've ever
stared at your website and
thought I have no idea what I'mdoing, you're not alone.
The good news you don't need tobe a tech wizard to have a site
that you're proud of and thatactually works.
Today, we're breaking throughthe fear and showing you how
really capable you are.
Welcome to the eCommerce MadeEasy podcast.
I'm your host, k Saunders.
(00:22):
When we started this business, all I had was a couch, a laptop
and a nine-month-old.
My main goal To help others.
Now, with over 20 years in thee-commerce building industry and
even more than that in webdevelopment, I have seen a lot.
I love breaking down the hardtech into easily understandable
bits to help others besuccessful in their online
business.
Whether you're a seasonede-commerce veteran or just
(00:43):
starting out, you've come to theright place, so sit back, relax
and let's dive into the worldof e-commerce together.
Welcome back to the show Now.
While having people like usthat are your tech wizards are
definitely a great thing to havein your back pocket, there are
many things that you can do as abusiness owner with your
website to make sure that itdoes actually work for you.
(01:06):
You know us tech wizards aregreat for whenever you have
something broken, need morefeatures, need things hooked up
the bit, more complicated tasks, but when it really comes down
to conversions, most of the timeit's your content.
So we want to get a frame ofmindset that you can do this.
We want to take out that techoverwhelm that really sucks down
(01:29):
business owners energy andmental energy to whenever they
feel like they need to be a techwizard to be able to work on
their website.
Most fixes aren't as scary orcomplex as they seem.
Many times it's the content, like I was saying, and the words
on your site and how things arepresented.
Now you might need a little bitof help if you need things
(01:51):
rearranged, depending on whatplatform you're using, but many
times anymore those manyplatforms are a lot easier to do
that and you don't actuallyneed a tech wizard to make small
adjustments and also thinkabout it.
You know we talk about on thispodcast a lot the little things
we can be doing to improve ourwebsite, so don't feel like you
(02:12):
need to fix everything.
Pick one or two things that youregularly come back to.
You know picking one or twothings that you should be
working on your website to makeit get better and over time it
really can make a hugedifference.
So there's some things that youcan do as a business owner that
don't require any tech skills, and clarity is one of them.
(02:35):
If your message isn't clear, then that's going to cause lots
of lost customers.
They don't actually buy orpurchase or they don't click on
that newsletter subscribe button, they don't download your
freebie, they don't browse yourshop.
So when you're not clear, thisis going to be a great hindrance
(02:55):
, and this is not really quitesomething that Most website
developers think about, becausemany times they're thinking of
the mechanics behind it.
We're a bit of a blended systemhere, where we think about both
sides of the equation themechanics as well as what is
actually on the website.
But you, as a business owner, can make sure that your message
(03:19):
is clear.
We want to make sure we're clearand not clever.
We want to be able to betterdescribe who you are as a
business and who you serve andwhy it's important to that
person.
We want to make sure that wealso don't have outdated or
missing information.
You know I will check regularly.
I would say at least once ayear.
Is your about us page up todate and relevant?
(03:41):
Does your contact page stillwork Now that one shouldn't
break unless there's some majorplatform updates underneath, but
want to make sure that that isstill working.
What about your offer section, whether it's your products or
services?
Are those up to date?
Do those still speak to thecurrent day?
So making sure that ourinformation is not outdated and
(04:04):
making sure we don't have holesor gaps in our information is
very important.
And then call to actions.
We don't want our call toactions to be weak.
We don't want it to be genericlike book a call or sign up now.
What are we booking a call forand what are we signing up for?
Be a bit more descriptive inyour words.
(04:25):
Tell your visitors exactly whatto do next and exactly what
that button or that link isgoing to do for them.
So pick one of these and fix onethis week, just one.
Don't be overwhelmed by this.
Pick one and really lookthrough your website with the
lens of.
I'm a newbie here and I don'tknow what the website's supposed
to do or supposed to say.
(04:46):
We have to reframe our mindsetwhenever we're evaluating our
own website and if you'restarting from scratch, say you
don't have a website yet, ormaybe you just have a one page
website.
So far, the three core pagesyou need is your homepage, your
about page and then some sort ofpage that's an offer or how to
(05:08):
work with you.
Whether you sell products orservices.
You want to have at least apage about that.
Obviously, if you're ane-commerce store, you're going
to have probably more pages thanthat as far as products go, but
those are your three core pagesthat you want to have.
So don't worry about gettingfancy at first.
Make sure these are nice andsolid.
The content is really what isthe key here.
(05:30):
Making it pleasing to the eyeis great, and you can do a
decent job of this and still besimple.
But the words is actually whatreally matters.
The content, how it scans, whether you can really glance
through it quickly to see whatit's all about.
We don't want to make peopleread right away, especially the
(05:50):
first impression they're goingto be scanning.
So make sure the scannabilityof it is top notch and really up
there to make sure theyunderstand exactly what you do
and who you serve and why it'simportant to them.
And there are just some greattools out there, like
GoHighLevel.
We are an agency of GoHighLevel.
They make a great way to greatdrag and drop your website.
(06:13):
It's super easy.
We have found it to be veryhelpful for those clients of
ours who like to be able to havethat control and don't want to
really get bogged down in thetech for, you know, making their
website look pretty.
So there are several tools outthere nowadays that make it a
lot easier for drag and drop, editing of your site and moving
(06:33):
things around.
And so, if you're really stuck, some things that you don't need
to worry about just yet, especially if you're just
starting out or you'rerebranding is pixel perfect
design, like we don't need tohave a super perfect website.
Think about the websites youenjoy.
I bet some of them are justnice and clean and have a very
(06:55):
clear message and aren't likesuper fancy looking.
They're probably really simple.
We don't need those fancyanimations or effects.
Simple, we don't need thosefancy animations or effects.
Actually, one of the thingsthat really drives me crazy is
fancy animations or movies orvideos that autoplay that is
just so disturbing to my brain.
(07:16):
I can't scan the website.
My eyes focus on the movingobjects and it either makes me
motion sick or I just getmesmerized and focused on it.
We all are trained.
Our eyes are trained to payattention to moving objects.
It's how we survive all theseyears.
So fancy animations or effects,it's just really not necessary,
(07:36):
no matter what stage you're in,honestly.
And then a lot of people get sostuck on what platform they
should use.
Should they use WordPress, should they use Wix, should they
use Squarespace, should theyuse Kajabi, should they use
GoHighLevel, should they useShopify, should they use Magento
, like the example?
We could just keep going on andon and on.
But you want to pick theplatform you're already on.
(07:59):
If you're already on a platform, and perfect that first.
There's always a perfect timeto switch platforms if you've
outgrown it, but we wanna makesure that we're using
effectively what we have now.
And if you're having troublefiguring out which one is best
for you, you're always welcometo jump in our free Facebook
group.
That links are on oure-commerce made easy podcastcom
(08:23):
website, and you're alwayswelcome to ask the question
there.
And I'm going to ask you aheadof time too what are the things
that you want in a platform?
Do you want you know whichfeatures do you want?
And if you don't know whatfeatures you want, I'll help
pull that out of you to helphelp you decide which one is
best for you, because not onesoftware tool is perfect for
everybody.
(08:45):
And then, if you're trying to dothis on your own and you get
stuck or hit a wall, there'sjust so much power and
communities and support, whichis one of the reasons why I have
our free Facebook group.
We have a great variety ofbusiness owners in there who are
willing to help you from otherangles, even if it's something
that I don't know and it couldbe you know a business niche
(09:09):
angle in there too.
I'm there to help you fromother angles, even if it's
something that I don't know andit could be you know a business
niche angle in there too.
I'm there to help with all thewebsite technology and
strategies.
But if you need other sort ofbusiness type help on selling
online, you're always welcome topop in our Facebook group and
ask questions in there, andthere are appropriate times when
you do it yourself and when youshould have help.
I don't want you to sit thereand waste your time and spend a
bunch of time on your websitewhen you could be doing income
(09:30):
producing activities Many times.
What you need to be doing ismaking sure your messaging is
clear and your components onyour website are clear, but when
it really comes down topotentially implementing that,
you might want to hire that out.
That is a really good way toend up making more money,
because you can focus on yourincome producing activities.
(09:52):
So work on a balance there.
We don't want to be alwaysthinking we have to do all the
things on our website ourselves.
The way I find people grow theirbusiness is by actually
outsourcing that to someone likeus or their own trusted
provider, because then you canfocus on your work.
Think about it what is youreffective hourly rate when
(10:14):
you're making money?
How much do you make per hour?
Well, think about then, whenyou hire somebody, how much
you're paying them per hour.
If you're paying them per hourless than what you're making per
hour, then it's advantageousfor you to pay somebody else to
do it.
Same thing comes for virtualassistant services and things
like that, and so we're kind ofgoing into a little bit of a
(10:35):
business strategy here, but Iwant you to keep that in your
mind.
I want to empower you to be ableto do the things on your
website, but at the same time,we also need to realize when
it's time to step back and letsomebody else do the
implementing on it.
So we want to be educated onhow to do it too, but then also
how to hire when that isnecessary and when that is
(10:56):
appropriate to do.
And then there's also a greatmiddle ground here.
We've talked about doing ityourself and also outsourcing it
.
Middle ground here We've talkedabout doing it yourself and
also outsourcing it.
We actually have a great coursecalled the converting website
course.
That is an in-between, it's ado it with you, we help you, we
teach you, we teach you allthese strategies that we're
doing on the podcast, but evenmore in depth, even more concise
(11:18):
, even more um, step-by-step, Iwould say.
And so if you ever wantinformation on the converting
website course, you can go toe-commerce made easy, podcastcom
forward.
Slash TC W and we'll put thatin the show notes and in the
podcast description.
But we have enrollment opening,um, every so often, as of this
(11:39):
release of this podcast we're in.
We're having an open enrollmentright now.
So it'd be a great time to jumpin to our course, to be able to
feel empowered and what this isgoing to do.
This is for anybody who isbrand new to building a website
to you know, 10s, 20 yearsestablished because things
(12:00):
change and we want to make surewe stay up to date.
We want to be empowered onknowing when things need to be
fixed.
We want to have the tools to beable to fix them ourselves, if
we'd like, and also the tools toknow how to better outsource it
.
When we know the basics and thecore and the foundations behind
a website and what really makesthem convert well, then that
(12:22):
will help you outsource and hirewhen that is appropriate time
to do that.
So I want you to know that youcan make your website better
even if you don't know how tocode or you feel overwhelmed by
tech.
One small step at a time leadsto massive improvement.
And when it is the time to hire, outsource or work with us in
(12:42):
our course so that we're doingit with you and helping you with
all your little nuancedquestions, then make sure that
you take that time to do thatand make that decision and be
okay with not doing all thethings yourself, because that's
how we grow as businesses.
That's all we have for thisweek's episode of the Ecommerce
Made Easy podcast.
(13:02):
Thank you so much for joiningus and we would love it if you
