Do you know what a double edged sword is? It's a sword that has two sharp edges - literally. Figuratively when you someone refers to something being a double edged sword it refers to something that has both good and bad consequences and how you can't get one without the other. When you're using a double-edged sword, you have to be careful that you don't cut yourself when you're trying to swing it at an opponent.
