(00:00):
So I'm curious what's a way thatyou can find your current life a
(00:04):
treat. I've done a lot in mylife, and so many times when
I've accomplished that bigthing, it's felt so empty,
because it really isn't aboutthe accomplishment, it's about
the journey. It's about theenjoying it along the way, and
what you get to experience andwho you get to become. Perhaps,
how would you like to retreatyourself? What's a way that you
could perhaps step away? Wherewould you go, or what sort of
(00:28):
event would you get into toretreat yourself? Are you ready
to live a life with enough time, money and energy have
relationships and connectionsthat delight you. Are you ready
for the extraordinary life youknow you've been missing? If so,
then this is the place for you.
I'm a best selling author, coach, consultant and speaker

fear, obligation and guilt torunning off joy, ease and love.
It's time for engineeringemotions and energy with me.
Justin Wenck PhD, Hi there.
(01:15):
Today I'm gonna be talking aboutwhat are the amazing benefits
and the life changingexperiences you can bring back
to your life to make it evenmore amazing, if you go on a
retreat, I'm live recordingthis. Well, I'm not live. I'm
recording this in person inGuatemala, after having finished
(01:37):
a one week retreat at beautifulLake Atitlan in Guatemala, and
so really sit back, relax, whether you're driving, whether
you're walking, doing thelaundry. We're going to be
talking about retreats in a waythat you probably have never
thought about before, because alot of people look at a retreat
(01:59):
as it's it's an escape, like Ilike to do retreats often,
whether they're just a full day,a weekend, or perhaps even an
entire week, like I just, I'vejust finished. A lot of people
look at it as, oh, I'm I'mleaving, because one of the
definitions of retreat is it'san act of moving back or
withdrawing, which is kind oflike, oh, regular life is too
(02:22):
much. It sucks. It's no good. Idon't enjoy it. So I need to, I
need to escape. I need to getback. It's, you know, very much
associated, like, with, youknow, retreating in a military
sense, right? Like, ah, this is,we're not winning, we're losing.
I need to get, get out of here.
And I feel like many people havethis mentality when they go on
retreat or even vacation, isit's just like I'm overwhelmed
with life. It's too much. I'mlosing. I just need to regroup.
(02:46):
And there's a little bit, but Iwant to, I want to shift how you
might consider your life, because let's break apart the
word retreat, you know, to theprefix re, and then treat at the
end, because one incredibledefinition of treat that I love
is it's an event. Did you everthink of a treat as being an
(03:09):
event or usually as somethingyummy you eat? But one
definitely it's an event or itemthat is out of the ordinary or
and or gives great pleasure. Soif life is a treat already, and
even as bad or as challenging oras awful, I encourage you to
(03:29):
view your life as a treat, because I've probably done some
episodes on the power ofgratitude, or at least mixed it
in with previous episodes thatjust to have the fortune of
getting to wake up in themorning, because every day
there's more people that don'tget that treat. Their life has
ended, but yours continues togo. You get the treat of being
(03:51):
alive and having the opportunityto have great pleasure and have
out of the ordinary experiences.
So however your life might begoing, if you can view it as a
treat, and then if you go andretreat, because Re is a Latin
prefix, meaning back or again.
Yet, in a lot of words, to me, Ikind of get this feeling of like
(04:13):
even more like, like rerun orredo or rejuvenate, reflect.
It's kind of like gettinggetting even more out of you
know what's already happened.
And so it's like, if your lifeis already a treat, and then you
retreat, you go somewhere, andit's like you're getting even
(04:35):
more. And that's really what Ifelt like I've gotten out of
this. And when I look back atall of my retreats. It's most
recent one. Very incredible, getting to be in the amazing I
took some pictures and somevideo. And so if you're you're
watching this on YouTube. Ithink my, my amazing, my amazing
producer, Christina, likely puta little bit of videos or
(04:57):
pictures here for you to enjoy.
Otherwise. Do make sure that youare following me, you know, on
all the things Justin Wenck PhD,make sure to probably have some
some pictures or some videos aspart of promoting this, this
episode, so you can kind of seethe beauty. And that wasn't only
just the beauty, but just theexperiences of connecting with
(05:18):
other people, of connecting withmyself, getting to remember some
of the things that I love to do,like dancing. I had some great
experiences dancing, and I'mlike, re inspired to go, make
sure that I go and dance moreoften, because I love it so
much, and to get to swim in thelake, and again, reminded that,
(05:39):
oh my gosh, I love being in thewater, and how great it feels to
my body to be in the water. Andthese are, these are things that
look back at the past year, andit's like I really haven't done
much of them at all, verylittle, very rarely, and there's
no reason for me not to, andjust getting to have, you know,
experiences that either arereminding or opening me up to
(06:02):
the possibilities of, how can Iretreat my life even more? How
can I make it even more out ofthe ordinary? How can I make it
even more pleasurable? Because alot of times we think, Oh,
someday later, I'm going to getto enjoy life like if I just
work hard enough, if I justaccomplish this, or if I'm seen
in that way, or if I get thiscredential or that that then,
(06:24):
then you're going to get thetreat, then you're going to get
the prize at the end. As someonewho has accomplished so much in
my life, not to be I'm not hereto brag. I'm not here to boast.
It's just, it's just a fact.
I've I've done a lot in my life, and so many times when I've
accomplished that big thing,it's felt so empty, because it
really isn't about theaccomplishment, it's about the
(06:46):
journey. It's about the enjoyingit along the way, and what you
get to experience and who youget to become. So when you view
what you already have in yourlife as a treat, and then when
you go somewhere else or have adifferent experience, that it's
just bringing you even more, tobring back into that treat of
your everyday life. Just imaginewhat that that can bring.
(07:08):
Because as I, as I said in thebeginning, I've, I've once went
to a place and and one man saidhe's like, I'm so glad I'm here,
because I just I can't have anyof this in my ordinary life. So
this is the only place where Ican have this kind of
experience, and that was one.
That's one of those I've I'velearned that I don't like to
argue with people that don'twant to change their mind, how
(07:31):
for people that are open mindedand want to hear different
things, they don't necessarilyeven have to change their mind.
But I've learned to be a lotmore careful with who I share my
opinion and how I share it. Iused to be a big, a big arguer
of trying to, you know, bringpeople to my opinion or how I
think, because I wanted to beright, and I'd much rather be
happy and just be secure knowingthat, like, Yep, I have valid
(07:55):
opinions, and that opinions areopinions. There is no right and
wrong for for most things inlife. So that was one of those
where I just kind of like, Thankthank him, but in my head and I
go like, that's, that's not howit's going to be for me. For me,
what I'm having here, thisexperience at this that was a
weekend workshop. I'm I'm goingto be taking that back into my
(08:16):
life and seeing how much I canshift my life that's every day
to be more like whatever I enjoyin this experience. And is it
100% No, no, absolutely not. Butis it? Is it like 1% it
absolutely can be, and that 1%over time, just like if you you
know, if you're good at, if youknow math and finances, the
(08:40):
power of compounding 1% everyyear can have great, great
returns over a lifetime. And soif you're doing like a retreat a
year, that's 1% on top of 1% ontop of 1%
you are going to have a hugeshifts in your life if you go on
(09:00):
these retreats and you bringback 1% of what you found
magical, enjoyable, fantastic, life shifting, if you bring back
just 1% into your everyday life, that every day that you can see
as a treat, as a gift, assomething that's that's not
ordinary, just think it. Thinkof most people who have ever
been alive, they're not aliveanymore, right? So you are one
(09:24):
of the special few that's everbeen alive, that is still alive,
and getting to have thisfabulous experience as good, as
bad, as awful, as horrific asmaybe some of your things have
been and currently feel, there'sprobably been some nuggets where
you're just like, holy shit, that's incredible. Like where
I'm staying here in San MarcosGuatemala on the lake Attilan,
(09:48):
right after the retreat, got tomy place, and there's like a
little stair stairway, andunderneath there's a litter of
puppies, a litter of fuckingpuppies. It is adorable. I mean,
as I don't think I've seenpuppies since I was, I was a
child, and they are justadorable and cute, and the
(10:09):
mother is really sweet, and beenvery let me pet her, and things
like that. It's just beenincredible. And it's one of
those like, oh yeah, is thereways that I can connect with,
connect with animals, andthere's, there's certain special
magic. So just theseopportunities that come and let
us know maybe what, what we'rewanting to bring in, or maybe
what we're wanting to do lessof, right? Because I know for
(10:31):
me, it's I it's like, oh, lessof trying to go after things and
just be more, more intentionaland being very intentional with
my time and my words. So this isgoing to be a short episode,
because I am about to start myjourney back home to the United
States. I've been here for aboutnine days, nine days already,
(10:56):
and been a great a greatjourney, because to get here, I
flew from San Francisco to LosAngeles, so I got to see kind of
the cloudy, perhaps still smokyskies, pardon me, like A little
smoothie fresh tropical fruits.
Oh so good. And then I went, went to Dallas, Texas. Was able
(11:23):
to get some barbecue. I lovebarbecue. It was delicious. And
then I made it to GuatemalaCity, where I got to experience
two nights. So one day I hadthis incredible, incredible
mall, which made me laugh. It'scalled Oakland place, because I
live in the Cal the Bay Area, where Oakland is right across
the bay from San Francisco. Soit's like I go from being near
(11:46):
one Oakland to near anotherOakland. And this mall was just
incredible, just a lot ofbeauty. It's still very
commercial, because it's afucking mall, yet I was really
able to enjoy it. Have some goodfood, get a massage, get a
pedicure, and then was able tobuy some stuff to enjoy a bath
at my hotel later, which wasreally spectacular. Everybody's
(12:09):
so helpful. So I woulddefinitely, you know, recommend
Guatemala. A lot of people getworried and be like, Oh, it's
going to be dangerous again,it's Be careful. The world is
much, much safer than theheadlines and what you hear, it
really is a much, much saferplace. And you can find so much
beauty, so much joy. And afterGuatemala City came through car
(12:32):
and then to get to the retreatcenter, was by boat only, which
is just I have land, air and seafollowed my travel, and then,
kind of reverse, took the boatback to this little, little
village area, San Marcos, andbeen here for for two nights,
and I'm going to take a car backto Guatemala City so I can fly
(12:56):
out. And it's going to be prettylooking forward to because it's,
it's pretty well, except tospend a night in Miami. So we'll
see what happens in Miami forjust one night. I'm planning to
hopefully get a lot of sleep, because sometimes when you're
retreating, it can be actuallyway more active than your normal
life. And that's really whatit's what it was this this
(13:19):
retreat, was incredible. Really, had some fantastic perspectives
on myself, how I've been livingmy life, what I want, and there
was a lot of work. It wasn'thard. It was. It was a pleasure
to be able to get theexperience, to get the
(13:39):
connection and to get just thethe more, even more of treats
that I'm looking forward tobringing back into my life. So
I'm curious what's a way thatyou can find your current life a
treat, and perhaps, how wouldyou like to retreat yourself?
(14:01):
What's a way that you couldperhaps step away? Where would
you go, or what sort of eventwould you get into to retreat
yourself? Or maybe you're you'recurious, so I'd love, love for
you in the comments, please letme know either what you feel is
a treat about your lifecurrently, or how you would like
(14:22):
to retreat yourself goingforward and like, get those
ideas and the suggestions, because maybe something that
you've done that has beenhelpful for you is going to help
somebody else. Like, I didn'teven know that was a
possibility. You can go spend aweek learning how to do aerial
silks or or acro yoga, likeeverything is a fucking thing,
(14:43):
and you could do it just aboutanywhere in the world. So with
that, gonna let you go, becauseI gotta check out this place in
my 15 minutes so I can start myjourney back to the United
States to get back to the treatthat. My life and wishing you
all the treats for yourincredible life. So thank you
very much and good day. Thanksfor tuning in to engineering
