For the past three seasons, we’ve challenged ourselves to name our 10 favorite artists, knowing that at the end of the season, three artists would be relegated and three would be promoted (I.e., get booted from the list and join the list, respectively, a la the English Premier League). It’s time to see who dropped and who joined the elite EPPL (Extended Play Premier League ™️). What do you think of our lists? Which of your favorite artists are in danger? (00:00):
For our last episode of the season, we're reconsidering our
ten favorite artists. Three are getting kicked out.
Three are coming in this week onthe Extended Play podcast with
the In Tank. That's right, you heard the man.

(00:20):
It is the final episode of Season 6 of the Extended Play
Podcast. Yeah, I guess it's technically
season 6. We just started numbering the
episodes rather than yeah, we. Sort of got away from the season
thing, but the the reality is this is the last that you're
going to see of us for a couple months maybe and it is the third
installment of our relegation series, let's say.

(00:42):
Yeah. Promotion and relegation.
Promotion and relegation. That's right.
I said relegation. I'm a glass half empty.
Kind of, yes. Yes, I have two.
Actually, I'm surprised I remembered.
But the general concept is way back in the nascent stages of
this show. In 2023, we picked our ten
favorite artists, and it's the ten favorite artists of that

(01:02):
point in time. At that point in time, yes,
absolutely. I mean, we're miss I.
I have not pointed out the obvious that he is EI am Tank
and this is a music discussion show without the hipster.
Snobbery. That's right.
We're talking about past episodes.
If you haven't done so already, please like and subscribe and
I'll link to episode the previous episodes where we chose
our ten favorite artists somewhere up there.

(01:23):
So we, we did it then and we knew that every year or so we
were going to yeah, re evaluate.Yeah, I thought.
Just we just thought it was healthy, right?
Like, let's keep the keep a pulse.
Let's check the pulse on who ourfavorite artists.
Are we're like pruning the Bush of musical favoritism be a

(01:44):
terrible. Album it would.
Be a terrible so to to not only encourage but mandate some
degree of of freshness, some degree of freshness to be a
great album. I would, and we should mandate a
high degree of freshness. We do a lot for the show, yeah.
Speaking and it's It is hot as balls out there.
You might notice I'm not wearingpants.

(02:05):
Yeah, not in the way that I would prefer still wearing
shorts, but it is hot as balls out there.
It is. So that's.
But that's why we're about to take a summer break.
That's right. Yeah.
So we mandate at least three must come off the list, which of
course means the three new ones must come on.
We haven't really specified it, but technically they could come
back from an earlier list, just not the Yes they could.

(02:25):
Right. Absolutely.
But this is current. It's not.
We're not trying to reassess ourwhole lives, life's journey with
everyone, right? It's where we're at right now.
Yeah, I think. Last time we basically went
through the ones that were staying each like I went through
all the mine that were staying from last time you went through
all the years that we're stayingand then we did the ones that
got cast aside and then the onesthat are coming up.

(02:46):
We can do it that way if we want.
Sure. Whatever the fuck we want, we
can. Do whatever we want, I think.
I forget that. It's our show.
We. Can go backwards.
That's. True.
Do it in Dutch. Don't even know what that means.
Yeah. Not like the language Dutch.
Oh, like to help in Dutch not. Like, no, no, we're just
splitting the cost. Yes.
So here are mine that are on thelist from last time, although

(03:07):
many are not in the exact same location.
Sure. Now the at #10 of my the biggest
fall from grace. Oh, OK, on the list, but did but
on the list Bearly bearly. As a favor.
OK, a personal favor as a. Personal favor #10 is Foo
Fighters. Wow, they were #2.
Wow, last. Time we did this, the firing of

(03:30):
Josh Freeze we haven't. Even talked.
About this, no, we haven't. But it's like there's only two
OK. There's three reasons that this
could be OK, going from most understandable to least.
And Josh Freeze, the drummer whoreplaced Taylor Hawkins, who
died. Right, OK, most explainable

(03:51):
reason. And this is my favorite pet
thrill that I haven't seen online yet.
OK. But I wish, I wish I could like,
gamble on stuff like this. Get out there.
Yeah. Number one, Shane Hawkins is
ready. I've seen that all.
Right. I have seen that someone's like,
they're holding a spot for ShaneHawkins, right?
So could be that because he was,you know, during the tribute, he
was what, 16? Maybe he's 18.
He's like, guys, I can go, yeah,sure.

(04:11):
Like he's an adult, let's do it right #2 is just the emotional
whatever that comes with. Look dude, we were in a weird
place. We made a weird decision.
It wasn't the right decision, sure.
However, there's the very plausible and commonly accepted
theory that Dave World just doesn't like being the second
best drummer in. The back Interesting.
That it's it's you could be aw shucks, Taylor's a great drummer

(04:33):
and aw shucks blah blah blah when everyone knows you're
probably the better drummer, butwhen you're not anymore.
Yeah, and and this Josh, Josh, yeah, Josh Freeze has this crazy
reputation of being like. This being like the the ultimate
can play anything, any style, anytime, anywhere.
Pros Pro, right, because he was kind of surprised by it, which

(04:53):
is if he wasn't surprised by it,then it'd be like, all right,
there's something, but it does seem like it came out of nowhere
and that with all the other gossip and crap, I just.
I don't. It's weird, especially when you
look in hindsight when they did that, that cool introductory
video, like who's the new drummer going to be?
And they made a big deal out of it.
And now how many months later, he's out of the band?
There's that. And then, you know, whenever

(05:14):
something that happens, I go back and look at the
discography. And there were a couple like,
you know, the latest album was actually very good.
Yeah. He liked that.
Yeah. And Medicine at Medicine at
Midnight was good. Yeah.
The other one. But it's been a lot of bad
albums in there, too. You know what, I'm just not
going back and listen to it much.
And then they deserve to get punished.
OK, all right, you're already here. 1st that just happened.
All right. #9 dropping down from#8 not very far.

(05:37):
Boney Ver OK, still on the list, had to moved on a little bit for
a new entry at #8 to be discussed later.
Boy yeah #7 Faith No More, whichsame as they were last time.
I love Faith No More. I do Faith No More has a great
discography. Go check it out if you haven't.
Start anywhere. It doesn't matter, all the
albums are different. Number six is another brand new
artist. Excellent #5 batting third #5

(06:04):
also #5 last time The Black Rose.
OK. I just, I can't, I can't, I
can't quit them. I still listen to the new album
every once in a while. I'm not crazy about their whole
thing and how they act. And it's clearly a money thing.
And I don't like, it's just all the I keep getting Instagram
reels of Chris Robinson trying to like, sell me stuff, if not

(06:25):
actually sell me stuff, sell me on ideas like join the Chrome
Mafia, get access to blah blah blah.
It's like guys just fucking playconcerts.
Shut the fuck up #4 run the jewels down from #3 last time #3
Jason Isbell, who was #4 last time.
They just swapped. OK #2 is a new artist.

(06:46):
Whoa, yeah. You're blowing my mind, Yeah.
And in one of the least surprising updates of all time
#1 I mean, it's, it's going to be a big day when they're not
number one, right? So they're still going strong,
still touring. Still, you don't let me start
because I won't stop. But like, still with cultural

(07:06):
moments like the Virginia Tech concert with Andrew Sandman and
80,000 people and the college students, I keep fucking loving
it. So nice.
Yeah. So that's my update to the the
residents who have not been evicted.
OK. OK, which of this economy is
surprising? Yeah, we need some rent control
on these. Lists.
Thanks, Obama. OK, so I'll go with I I

(07:29):
unsurprisingly do not rank them.I choose 10.
They're somewhere in that list. I don't like to play favorites.
We try I I love them all equally.
Not not really if I think about it, but OK, it's OK.
It's probably just laziness on anything.
OK, so let's do the ones that nosurprise, they're not going
anywhere. The Smiths stay somewhere on the

(07:50):
list, right? Even if I don't listen to him
for a while, they're always there.
Well, you know, the more you ignore them, the closer they
get. That's.
True. Wow, fucking nailed it.
Even though that's a Morrissey song, it's it counts.
OK Fish stays as well. I actually did listen to a lot
of fish and it's getting warm inMichigan.
And as I mentioned in previous episodes, I.

(08:10):
Time for the Mango song. It's.
Pretty much only the Mango song in the summer.
Sigaros is going to stay. We went and my wife and I went
and saw them earlier this year. We played with the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra. I don't remember if we did a
recap of that. I think we did a little bit,
yeah. Maybe I'll find it in a link to
it, maybe I won't. You'll just have to imagine what
it was like. It was pretty awesome.

(08:30):
Just said he was lazy. That's right.
Bob Mould stays. We went not famously, but just
very recently maybe. Famously, it's the talk of the
town. Well, about how how much we
kicked ass in our whole concert experience.
Oh yeah, it's crushed it. It just crushed it.
Yep, Yep. So Bob Mold stays, Run the
Jewels stays as well. There's some anniversary shit

(08:52):
going on with Run the Jewels right now, and they're prepping
for the Wu Tang tour. I'm like, got my fingers crossed
that one month away for the Wu Tang show.
I'm hoping they're getting in the studio because I'm not
listening to as much as I used to because I think I need new
stuff. There's really been no excuse
for this long of a cap. Yeah.
We're going on five years now, Ithink.
Yeah. Four or five.
Yeah. Come on.
Yeah, come on, Deftones. Stay.

(09:12):
Really. Yeah, they had dropped, I think
dropped and come back at some point.
We've done this list three timesor anyway they replaced somebody
last time around. So Deftones stay, Radiohead
stays, the Hives stay. And that is my well thought out
list of all the artists that I love that are going to stay, you
know, up in the major division, whatever we're calling it.

(09:35):
Crushed it. Yeah.
All right, so now that we got the the non changers, I guess
now we'll we'll do both the the additions and subtractions in
the same place. Yes, yes.
Back on my side, new to the listat #8 is Sturgill Simpson.
Cool. Which kind of surprised wasn't

(09:56):
there before. Yeah.
But so I will say the minor disappointment that I have with
this is I feel like it's not exactly doing what we had
intended for it to do. OK.
Which is I'm not there's not necessarily new artists on here.
Sure. Right.
So the idea was we we do this show, we stay much more current

(10:17):
than we otherwise would. Yeah.
And these artists that are new to us creep into our favorites.
Yeah. Still a possibility.
I think so. And it granted Sergio Simpson.
I mean, it's not like it's fucking ACDC, right?
But when I looked at it and I really thought about who are the
three new ones gonna be, I'm like, it's not like there's a
dochi on there. They would be like, right, okay,

(10:38):
came up out of nowhere this year.
Now she's one of my favorites, but maybe next.
Year, I mean, they're fighting your entire life.
That's true of listening to someof these bands.
That's true. Yeah. 20-30 years.
But they're at #8 which means that one of them had said drive
by truckers had to go. OK, I like that switch.
It's a genre for genre switch. Yeah, exactly.
I mean, I still love the drive by Truckers, but realistically I

(11:00):
don't listen to the catalog muchOK right now.
And they're not nothing new, there's really.
Nothing going on. Yeah, they're kind of off the
radar a little bit. Number six new entry is the
Decemberists. Wow, OK.
Decemberists have always been inmy B league.
They're a strong second divisionteam, but the new album's really
good. Great.
Well, it's what came out in 24 maybe.

(11:22):
I mean, new to me. New to yeah.
That's true. It's new to you.
That's. All that matters, but it's
really good. Great.
It's classic Decemberists. Awesome.
It's like they're like a parallel universe.
ACDC. Wow, I bet.
I'm sure that's the first time that comparison has ever made.
But the consistency of style andapproach throughout albums?
Yeah, sure. With the exception of all Be
Your Girl, that was like the anomaly.

(11:43):
Yeah, even. But even when they do make a
turn, there's still that voice cuts through everything.
And the the lyrics are always, you know, right.
So particular, yeah. But yeah, they hopped in at #6
and they kicked out Kendrick Lamar, who who was at #10 The
funny thing about Kendrick Lamaris I can understand and
appreciate his greatness, but just really not often want to

(12:05):
listen to it. Interesting.
I never go back. I do think.
Listen to this stuff I do. Think this is an episode we've
we've done a full episode on niche genres and things like
that. But I think and we're like
workshopping this as we as we record, but like something about
and we did a whole episode aboutsituations like when you listen
to music. But I think this idea of like,

(12:27):
like when we reviewed the Joni Mitchell and Elton John and
David Bowie, like, but when, when do you actually listen to
it, right? Sometimes the situations just
aren't right. Yeah, I mean, it's there.
There's no denying the quality. I just.
Yeah, again, yeah, I think it issituational based.
It's I don't know. I don't know what it is.
It's a weird. Anomaly Yeah, when?

(12:47):
Like when it's like lyrically dense or musically complicated,
it's not like you're throwing onone track.
So now you have to listen to a whole album.
Do I have the time to listen to a whole album?
Yeah, there's a lot of. Factors.
Yeah, that's true. And then the the 3rd.
So that wasn't #6 the Decemberist and #2 not really
surprising when you think about it.
OK, it was obvious to me. Radiohead.

(13:09):
Oh. OK, that's right.
They. Weren't on the list.
Last year, it's amazing, yeah, but you've been on a journey
since May of 24 on a daily. Basis crazy listening to it.
Still amazing they're nipping atMetallica's heels, but yeah, I
mean. Wow, you.
And you might be one of the onlypeople in the world whose two
favorite artists are metallic onRadiohead.

(13:29):
Now imagine that joint headlighting.
Tour will be amazing. Would be amazing.
Yeah. So I mean, I can't, I mean,
that's the absolutely when I looked at it, I looked at it a
few times like there's no way itwasn't there, but that's how
much over the last year. So although it's not a new band,
yeah, it is a definite major seismic shift in my repertoire.
Absolutely. I mean, you were skeptical at

(13:51):
best about the the the group as a whole.
Not cynical. Yeah, sure.
Yeah, absolutely. So, and I think actually I just
realized the other day, like it's time now to go into post
amnesia. I'm going to do moon shape pool,
King of limbs, all that stuff. It gets time.
Yeah. And then the final one that got
kicked off because that was the roots.
Getting tired of the roots? Is it just Questlove?

(14:12):
It's. Just quit.
No, no. Yes, yes.
Two things, Questlove. Just shut up, OK?
Like I, it's just, I don't know what it is.
It's gone from like, I really like this personality.
Just grating. I know.
I think he's way too omnipresent.
And that black thought who goes off and does his solo stuff,
He's a he's a top. He's an all time top MC,

(14:35):
absolutely. But without the secret sauce of
the roots, it's boring. I could see that.
And the only time his stuff has been interesting is with, I
think, the guest that he brings in.
Oh, sure. OK.
So it's just guys fucking make music, right?
So yeah, I'm just, I'm tired of waiting for a new element.
It might suck when it does come out true.

(14:58):
Yeah. So yeah, no, they're done for
now. That's.
Kind of a bummer. Yep, yeah.
So that's OK. That's the entirety of my
comings and goings. I'm going to attempt to do this
with my well taken notes here tomake sure I get this right.
So a group I think that was on my list last time was Wilco and
they are no longer on the list. Really.
Yeah. It's not fair because they just

(15:20):
put on an album that people liked.
Well, there was a country album, country, more country leaning
album maybe two years ago that alot of people liked.
I did not, but they just had a recent album that did do well.
I only listened to it once and wasn't that interested in it.
I don't know. It might be.
It might be me. Wilco, Jeff Tweedy.
Sorry. It might be me.
It's me, not you. I'm.

(15:41):
Surprised like deaf tones would stay over Wilco.
I listen. To him more.
Although I just listened to all of YHF the other day.
God damn is that a good album. YHF.
By the way, if you're wondering where that comes from, I it's
from the very. It's no second to last track
poor places. No, it's at the end of poor

(16:01):
places. OK, source of which was a
numbers channel. Google numbers channel.
Yeah, great rabbit hole. Old school.
OK, Wilco out. Guster in.
Really. How?
About that. War Mobile team.
Sure. I went and saw them this year.

(16:22):
I told a pretty funny story. I thought it was a pretty funny
story about the ridiculous experience I had there going by
myself when I didn't need to go by myself to the Guster show.
Which is unreleased episode. Oh, it is on the audience.
Oh man, that's in the archives. Coming to you over the summer.
Has bonus content. It's just might.
Yep, essentially they they have been this band that I paid

(16:43):
attention to for 20 plus years, but I went and saw them and just
rekindled my love for the band. If you don't know them well,
check out the album Lost and Gone Forever is probably my
famous. It's my famous, my favorite.
It's probably 20 years old at this point, but they still do.
Just had an album come out a year or two ago.
Yeah, just their knack for melody.

(17:04):
They do. They have two equally competent,
if not excellent lead singers, so they can switch off song to
song, which means they can also do really great two-part
harmonies because one's high, one's low.
Keeps it always, always keeps itinteresting.
Even if they're playing in the same sort of whatever you want
to call it, indie rock, adult contemporary genre.
They can keep it fresh that way.The lyrically, it's always

(17:27):
interesting. It's not just love songs.
It's not boring stuff. They're actual thoughtful
stories about like somebody who dishes all their friends for a a
girl or a guy or there's some really good breakup songs which
you often don't hear. So there's that.
They're funny dudes and really entertaining.
So there's some credit goes there.
The the live show was absolutelyfantastic.

(17:49):
And yeah, so they may make the list.
There's only catalog out there. People don't start from the
first album. They don't sound like that
anymore. It was like their college dorm
room stuff. Two guys in acoustic guitar and
bongos. So where should they start?
They should start at the second album, Goldfly, or at the third
album, which is, I think, lost and gone forever.
I should be right. Yeah.

(18:09):
So yeah, Guster makes it so theythey oust Wilco.
I'm sure they play together. So if they play together again,
they can have this conversation amongst themselves.
Hey. Man, how'd you do with that
extended play thing? It's like, I don't know, they
didn't play that episode. Oh, you're right.
OK, another group that is, or another artist of mine from last
time that it's getting the boot is Brian Eno.

(18:30):
OK. He was kind of like, hey, I
wanted an ambient artist in there somewhere.
He was a diversity hire. He was, and we, as we all know,
we are Americans. Yeah.
DI no more DEI. It's gone.
Yeah, all white male artists. He was a white.
White male artist exactly. Yeah, but he's he.
Whatever. Still love him.

(18:51):
Yeah, Yeah, he goes. In comes another male white male
artist. Right, Hitler.
God damn it. Elliott Smith OK, OK.
Not sure why other than I think they started repressing the
vinyl. And so when I go to record
stores and I'm looking at looking at what vinyl I should

(19:13):
get, I see the albums and I'm like, I need to own it because I
listen to them so much. So I think I've got the full
catalog on vinyl now. Besides some like post death
stuff. They're like compilations.
Post death is not the. Word for it?
Costumes. This sounds way better than post
death. Yeah, his his his acclaimed post

(19:36):
death release. Post Malone is, rumor has it
he's going from the country album, he's going to do a black
metal album and it's going to becalled Post Death.
Yes, it. Wouldn't surprise you that
actually happens. OK, so 1 white guy out, another
white guy in, and then a whole gang of white guys out.

(19:57):
Jimmy Eat World gets ejected from the list.
I haven't been listening to thema lot.
They haven't had a new album outin a bit.
That how that hurts too. And in comes another white guy,
another dead white guy. At least they're dead.
I don't know. Does that make it?
No, that's even worse because itmeans that you appreciated them
more during a more segregated and racist time.

(20:19):
Yeah, the 90s. Yes, yes, LA riots.
We've come so. Far you know OJ.
I mean, I'm flush. You could probably tell.
I mean, this could not happen toA.
He's he's having an awakening over there.
But really, you know this is a problem.
Yeah, this this is a problem. Was a Kid Rock?

(20:39):
No Jeff Buckley, Jeff Buckley makes a list.
He makes a list because we recently did a countdown of the
100 best albums of our lifetime, which we refer to as the EP 119.
Eighty to 2020 and Jeff Buckley was my spoiler alert.
Jeff Buckley's Grace was my number one album, my choice and
an overall ranked #8 so it was in the top 10.

(21:00):
Made me re listen to it, made mego back to, you know, there's
only the one studio album. But go back to his live stuff
and yeah, he belongs. He belongs there.
I think that was a very common answer on.
There's a Reddit question yesterday on the music
subreddit. OK if you could bring back from
the dead one artist. Wow.
Who would you bring? OK, OK.
That's a very common answer, yeah.
I could see that. Some guy said Prince and I

(21:22):
responded to him and I go why? Why?
Like did you forget he made 20 years of forgettable music
before he died? Right?
Like what? You would come back and release
5000 more shitty songs that no one's gonna hear.
Right, right. Yeah.
I mean, I love Prince, but come.On yeah, No thanks.
Yeah, yeah. That's it.
That's my 33. Up, three down.
Yep. We'll do this again next.
Year. Yep, and he'll go find three

(21:44):
other white dudes to he'll see if there's any, maybe people of
color or women on his list to make sure I get the fuck out of
there. I've been transparent.
Yeah, I have a problem. Yeah.
I don't know what it was. Call it youth.
Youthful indiscretion, where I listen to mostly white dudes
playing guitars for most of my childhood.
It's a problem. I'm working on it.

(22:04):
I promise this does not reflect the work I'm doing.
Let's look for Jason Aldean, maybe Hank Williams junior.
Jesus. Christ, and we're that shitty
Canadian rapper, that's all. I'm something, yeah.
Jesus. Sweet Jesus.
Anyway, Yeah. Well, there there's the
exercise. Yeah.
For the end of season 6. Now, coming up next season, a

(22:27):
whole lot of new stuff. Everything's gonna look
different. Yeah.
It's gonna sound different. It's gonna feel different.
You're gonna feel it. Yeah, they'll smell different
too. Yeah, yeah.
Hopefully we're gonna bring the freshness, Yeah, Quite a bit of
changes coming for next season. We will maybe tease them as the
summer rolls on. Yeah, yeah.
And but we're excited about it. Absolutely let us know what
you'd like to see in our next season.

(22:48):
Let us know who your ten favorite artists are.
Who's the who's the artist that most recently you would say
cracked your top ten of artists. Are you as lame as us and are
picking old bands anyway or what?
Yeah, let us know in the comments.
Again, please like and subscribeif you haven't already.
Even though we're gonna be on break.
I'll we'll have some stuff in inthe YouTube and the yeah, we'll
be around the podcast feed so and we're extended play pod and

(23:09):
all the socials. We'll have stuff there as well.
So have a great summer everybody, and we'll talk to you
soon. Bye folks, see ya.
