From the dust of Southern Arizona and the canyons of Old Mexico to the jungles and seas of the South Pacific, the life of Howard Leon Whetten is a testament to how ordinary lives can rise to extraordinary moments. Born into hardship, raised on hard work and faith, Leon stepped from farm fields into the tailgun of a B-24 bomber during World War II.
On his very first bombing mission, fate plunged him and his crew into the midnight waters off the Solomon Islands—an ordeal that tested his courage, his faith, and his will to survive. What followed was not just survival, but a series of miraculous occurances, rescues and providential encounters that defied coincidence.
