In the rugged wilderness of early Utah Territory, frontier medicine collided with faith, fire, and sheer grit. This episode follows the remarkable journey of Dr. Priddy Meeks, one of the earliest pioneer physicians of the American West. From crossing into the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1847 to launching the Church-backed “Council of Health,” Meeks blended botanic remedies, spiritual conviction, and raw innovation to serve a growing people.

But it’s the winter of 1857 that delivers the most unforgettable chapter: a frostbitten soldier, a pot of cayenne pepper tea, and a refusal to amputate. Through pain, perseverance, and an unconventional remedy, Dr. Meeks performs a healing that defies belief.

Along the way, we explore Utah’s brush with war, the iron mission in Parowan, the explosive tensions over plural marriage, and one doctor’s steady hand through it all.

True ancestry, told like legend. Only on Family History Drama.
