(00:00):
Well, you've probably heard by now. It is the best game going on
ice. It's overtime all the time, three ice, and there's Summer Hockey
Tour coming to Grand Rapids again forthe second season. My name is Brett
Pikia and this is the fast BreakPodcast, and we thought, you know
what, there's a lot of peopleout there that might think they know what
three ice is, but why nottalk to a player that's going through it
for the first time and the experiencethat he's having because it is a little

(00:23):
bit different. They've got some differentrules and right now, he was the
hero of last week, had thegoal of the night for Week two in
Hershey, Pennsylvania. Hank grown fromTeam Murphy. That's right, Larry Murphy
Red Wings Fans is his head coachand they're all Hall of Fame head coaches.
But he got the victory. Ihelped his team get the victory last
week, and boy, that hadto feel good, Hank, Yeah,
it did. I mean, obviously, when there's some prize money on the

(00:45):
line, you know, it seemedlike probably the most important shootout I've maybe
ever been in. But no,it was really cool. Obviously, the
people in Hershey, we're great andexcited to be there, and it was
really well organized and you know, everything was great. Was obviously the first
time all of us on our teammet each other. You know, I
knew a couple of guys in theteam. I don't know if it's never

(01:08):
been done in three ice for sure, but you know, our team has
three guys from Texas, so itwas nice to see them and then meet
all the new guys and obviously wehad a good first week. Well you're
a native of Dallas, Texas andyour college background, you're at Boston.
You actually as a freshman, youguys won the NCAA championship, so congrats
on that. I'm sure the ringis real nice and then played at Denver
and then wrapped up a little connectionto the Mitten State here at Northern Michigan

(01:30):
University now played for the Allen Americansand the ECHL had a great season eighty
six points at just a phenomenal goalscore. So it was nice I know
for you when talking you off theyear that you got a chance to kind
of play close to home. Butyou have a funny story about how you
got involved with three ice and alwayswondered how players got recruited. But tell
us what happened to you last year? Yeah, so you know, it
was obviously the first summer of it, and like me, you know,

(01:53):
I think a lot of people didn'treally know what it was. And you
know, I just got a messageon Instagram from the three ice account,
and you know when you read it, especially someone like me who you know,
three on three I think really fitsmy game. Uh, you know,
I almost thought it was too goodto be true. I mean I
did think it was too good tobe true. You know, it's just
a message saying, hey, we'reputting a lead together where you played three

(02:13):
on three for a chance to wincombined million dollars. And you read that
and you think, okay, thisis probably just a spam account. And
then you know, a couple couplemonths later, I've turned on the TV
and saw everyone playing in it.So I made sure that I did some
some intel and you know, gotgot some more information on it and made
sure that I was entered for thisyear for sure. Now there are eight

(02:35):
teams that people don't know. There'sonly four that visit Pacific City. There
were six stops and then hopefully youget into the final four and you play
for a championship in Philadelphia for stopnumber seven. So you guys made your
debut last week and you won itover Team Leclair and is shot out three
to two. As you mentioned inHershey, Pennsylvania, now you're coming to
Grand Rapids. There could be awhole shuffle of new teams in the mix.
So what has the experience been likefor you now that you've gone through

(02:59):
it, because there are some differentrules, but like you said, if
you are an offensive, mining, creative type of hockey player, this is
right up your alley. Yeah,no, it was. I didn't really
know what to expect. I mean, obviously I watched the first week of
this summer in Pittsburgh and you know, tried to kind of see what it
was going to be about. Andyou know, I had a lot of
help with Colton Hargrove being on myteam. He was my linemate now and

(03:19):
he obviously played in it last summer. So just kind of talking to the
guys and trying to figure out,you know, the game plan. You
know, it's a little tougher playingyou know, sixteen straight minutes at three
on three, you know, withonly six guys, so you've got to
kind of figure out how your group'sgoing to approach it. But no,
it was great. I mean, obviously it was even better because we ended
up winning the whole the whole week. But you know, I thought our

(03:40):
guys really gelled together, especially fornot fully knowing each other playing with each
other, and obviously coach Murphy hada good game plan. What's it like
with the Hall of Fame coaches, because obviously Larry is your coach, but
I'm sure you get a chance tointeract with some of the other coaches and
these are some of the biggest namesin hockey. I'm sure you remember growing
up as a kid. Yeah. No, it's awesome them. I mean,
it's it's really exciting for the fans, but you know it's probably more

(04:03):
exciting for us to you know, kind of pick their brains and get as
much information as we can, youknow, as well as here's some some
really good stories. Yeah. Isat on the plane next to Joe Mullen
on the way to the Percy,so you know he probably thought, man,
this kids asked me a lot ofquestions, but you know, I
had to make sure that when Igot the scoop And yeah, no,

(04:23):
it's great they're all walking around andyou know, after the game, it's
it's a really nice situation to beable to talk with everyone and get information
from everybody. First time three icehockey player Hank Crone played collegiately at Boston
Denver in Northern Michigan and then withthe Alan Americans the ECHL this past professional
season. He'll be in Grand RapidsWednesday at as part of the event for

(04:44):
Team Murphy. Look Woman the GreenJerseys and Hank. One of the things
I got to ask you about isjust that the the sixteen minutes continuous,
you do have a halftime in there, you know, be able to play
the puck off the net. Ifit goes behind on a shot, it's
still live. I mean, thereare different things that you just aren't used
to playing natural hockey like you wouldknow it. What was the toughest thing
was it stamina maybe or having toplay both ways like you said, with

(05:06):
that style. No, I thinkthe toughest thing for me at least was
you know some of the rules. You definitely need to know the ins and
outs because, like you said, they changed a couple of things up with
the way they want to do it, and obviously the game, day's moving
and his way quicker. So Ithink just remembering all the little nuances of
the of the three ice game. You know, whether it's not being able

(05:28):
to take it back past the redline once you enter the zone or you
know, having to stay away fromthe goalie after he covers it. You
know, there's no face off.So I think all those little rules and
just trying to you know, rememberthose. But now that we played the
first week, you know, wedidn't our team didn't have any mishaps,
and you know, once you playit a little bit, you kind of
get used to it. But Iwould say that was the biggest thing to
kind of get used to. Howmuch do you guys get a chance to

(05:51):
practice in between when you're going toa city or not. Yeah, there's
no practice. So you know,we all just show up on Tuesday and
have a little bit of a eatingand you know, have a nice dinner
together and make sure everybody's feeling good. And then Wednesday morning, you know,
we'll go out for a little bitof a little skate, you know,
twenty thirty minute skate with everyone that'sthere for that week, and then

(06:11):
you know, after that it turnsinto kind of like another game day routine
where you know, you get yourlunch and maybe get an app and just
try to be ready to go.Three. Ice hockey player Hank Crone is
our guest here on the Fast BigPodcast. My name is Brett Pikida.
Again, they're going to be intown Grand Rapids, Van and Lorena Hank.
Final question for all the fans outthere. I told you before the
interview, I'm bringing a youth icehockey team here locally out to just kind

(06:32):
of enjoy themselves. They just wontheir division championships, so I'm sure they're
going to be excited to see youguys. But the fan reaction has to
be just like wow, I meanthis is hard to even fathom, right
because it's constant action. Yeah,no, it's it's really cool, you
know, for everyone to go watchit. I know for a fact that
if it was a thing when Iwas a kid, I would have been
begging my parents to go. Sothat part's really awesome. And like I

(06:55):
said, it was a great firstweek or first week for our team in
Hershey, and you know we're hopingat it's the same result in Grand Rapids.
Save travels. We're looking forward towatching you and your team on display
at Vandenel Arena. He has HankCrown forward for Team Murphy. Hank,
thanks for the time. Yeah, thanks so much
