Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, coach, so good to have you on. Lots of
Spartan fans in West Michigan. I just based on last
year's tournament. You guys were coming in riding to high
We talked to Coach Nightingale before and there were a ton,
as you know, of Spartan fans in the House of
Vaniel Arena. Now you come in, coach with the number
one ranking, thirteen to two and one.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Yeah, No, we're definitely excited about what we've done so
far in the first half, but there's still a lot
of hockey to be played, but definitely optimistic here about
the second half. And the kids have done a great
job on the ice. But actually we just got their
GPAs back today and did unbelievable in the classroom here,
so we're super super proud of them so far.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Talk about what you and Adam and the rest of
the coaching staff have done since taking over at Michigan
State and kind of getting the Spartans back to prominence
again as far as hockey's concerned.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Well, I mean, obviously I'm probably a little bit biased
because Adam gave me a job at Michigan State, but
I think we've put a huge premium, first and foremost
on just our culture, and it starts with Adam at
the top, his vision for how we want to do
things on a Bailey daily basis and what's valued in
our identity, how we want to do things on the ice,
and we've been fortunate to attract some outstanding young men.

(01:12):
I think it's just a blue collar, hard working mentality,
not going to take no for an answer. You can
knock us down, but we're going to get back up.
And it takes time to do this, but I think
we're happy where we're at, but we're not satisfied, and
we know we're not perfect, and we know we continue
to improve. But our players have really bought into how
we want to play Spartan hockey, and I think it's

(01:32):
a fun brand of hockey. And it's fast, it's uppaced,
it's hard hitting, it's offensive, it's defensive, there's good goaltending.
But I definitely think we're optimistic for the future here now.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Coach the way it falls that the World Juniors are
going to have some players that won't be on the
roster for the gl Live, but you still are loaded.
And I just speak of Isaac Howard just announced this
week earlier as the Big Ten First Star of the Week.
He's tremendous. But I mean it's beyond that. Your roster
depth is really incredible.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Yeah, I know. That's something that we've really wanted to
build here, is to have strong depth in all positions.
So forward's, defenseman, goalies. Isaac Howard ak the iceman. He's
leading us in scoring right now. He's a character but
elite skill, elite work ethic, he's getting much better without
the puck, and he's an unreal teammate. I think when

(02:20):
you see him before and after practice in the locker room,
I think his teammates can attest to how great of
a kid he is. Carson Dorwar and Joey Larson are
two juniors. They're undrafted free agents, but they're arguably two
of the most sought after free agents in college hockey.
Charlie Strammels had a really good year for US. He's
a transfer in first round draft pick of the Minnesota Wild.

(02:42):
He's had a resurgence and he's done a really good
job in the middle for US and bring something different.
He's six ' three, can really skate, unreal at the
net front, great on the faceoff, dots. He's been really
helpful on the penalty kill. He obviously had a big
goal last weekend against Minnesota. And then even on the
back end, we've got really good depth there. Matt Basgal,

(03:03):
junior captain's had an unreal start to his junior season
for us, really good on the power play, really reliable
two way defenseman. Nick Andrews is a good state of
a Michigan boy. He's a fifth year grad transfer coming
from a solid conference, and he's really brought some good
leadership on the back end. And we like our depth
between the pipes in Trey Augustine and Luca da Pasca,

(03:23):
who have both gotten minutes and both been really solid
for us between the pipes.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Well, Merry Christmas, do you coach. Best of luck and
we'll look forward to seeing the Spartans coming up with
the GLI.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
You got it. Merry Christmas. Happiolodies
