Speaker 1 (00:01):
What a week for the Grand Rapids Griffins Tuesday, Wednesday,
that's tonight and tomorrow they faced the Stars in Dallas.
Friday night the host of the Admirals and then Sunday
the Stars come to town. Head coach Dan Watson on
the liveline on West Michigan's Morning News. Coach, thanks for
doing this today, No.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Thanks for having me on. Really appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Well, Coach, I'm not going to ask you, because we're
almost a week away from Christmas if you have your
shopping done because you've been busy winning hockey games but
and traveling across the country. But I will ask you
because we're all in the Christmas spirit now. As a kid,
do you remember, like what your favorite toy you got,
our favorite maybe sporting item you got as a kid?

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Yeah? I do. It was a personalized Doug Gilmore Charnto
Maple leafs Jersey and I wasn't a Maple leash fan,
but just love the player. And I know back then
how much those costs and how long it takes to
do that. So my parents came through big time on
that one. And that wasn't a Fanta gift. That was
a mom and dad gift.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
They made sure that you knew that too, right, coach.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Exact, exactly, exactly awesome.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Well, I guess Merry Christmas to you and your family
and the entire Griffins. And you've got two big hockey
games coming up. Let's focus on that for a minute
before I talking about the depth of this roster and
how good it is. And people need to go out
maybe this Christmas holiday season and see the Griffins from
their home. But you're taking on a team the next
two nights and the Texas Stars. You guys score seventy

(01:28):
five goals for the season, so you're averaging three a game.
Any coach will take that. They score eighty four and
twenty three games, so two games less, but they also
give up eighty four.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Coach, Yeah, they do. You know, they're run gun. They've
got a high octane offense. They're very fast. They live
and die off the rush. So we've got to be
really good defensively. And they do give up opportunities though,
because they will. They will get their defenseman up on
the rush. And now we've got to capitalize and for
us turn that puck over and then we've got to

(01:58):
get going north and attack them. So I think it's
gonna be a fast paced hockey game here tonight and
likely tomorrow, and it should be entertaining.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
I tell you what, I love your kids in an
environment like that. I know it's a coaching moment for you.
But eight players, coach, as I look this morning, in
double digits in points already in twenty five games. I mean,
you guys really have a lot of talent on this roster.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Yeah, we do. Yeah, And I know you mentioned we'll
talk about depth later on, but that's that's how we're built.
It's not you know, one one scoring line or two
scoring lines. We need everyone to contribute in order for
us to have success, and right now we are. We're
playing as a team. The guys are really really tight,
which is great to see, and that comes from when
it's inside of the locker room, comes from our leadership group,

(02:41):
and they're doing a great job and it's starting to
show on the ice, Griffin said.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Coach Dan Watson joined us live from Texas. I've got
a game tonight, another one tomorrow, Tonight's game seven forty
five pre game right here with Bob kJ on the
call on Wood Radio and coach, your two and two
so far in this six game road trip. You'll wrap
it up tomorrow night, But how do you feel about
this split in Colorado? And, as you mentioned, talk a
little bit about that depth, because we've had a lot
of your players on on these powerplay segments and to

(03:06):
a man, they're always happy for guys who get called
up and wishing well with the parent club, but also
excited to play with the group that you guys have
in the locker room.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Yeah. No, we've got great depth. And I think one
thing is when we have injury. You know, Carter Masers
only played a couple of games for us this year,
someone else has to step up and fill that role.
So we have guys who stepped up big time for us,
and that's the way you have success and continued successes.
Guys just want to take on that next role. And yeah,
we are excited when guys get called up. That's part
of it. I think that's part of the culture that

(03:37):
we sort of set here right now. And then again,
it's making sure that everyone's ready to go and they're
prepared to play. That's through practices, that's through off ice training.
It's that next man up mentality when something you don't
want a guy gets injured, guy gets called up. So
our guys done a really good job. We've got some
young guys who are having some great start to their
seasons and we're looking forward to continuing that.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
Here, make sure you get your tickets. Friday night they'll
be back home seven o'clock, and then Sunday for the
families four o'clock. They're doing a gridire night with a
special jersey, kind of an onto of the Lions. It's
gonna be cool. But Coach, one of those guys we
just recently had on that you were talking about is
Nate Daniel sid And I know he had a big
goal the other night in Colorado for you.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Oh, he did big shootout win for us. You know
he was able to steal the deal. But he's a
player that just continues to get better and better. I
think he's got twelve points in his last thirteen games.
He centers our I guess what other teams are consider
our number one line with Austin Watson and Joe Sniveley.
Here's a guy that's come in fresh off of junior.
I know he's, you know, a high draft pick, but

(04:40):
what a responsible two way player you know he will
get some more offensive pointsier coming up soon, but his
defensive play is what separates him from the young guys.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Right now, don't forget two weeks from tonight the twenty
seventh annual New Year's Eve Celebrate Yeah two Head coach
of the Grand Rapids, Griffin Stan Watson. Great stuff is
always thank you.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
Hey, thanks for having me on. Really appreciate it.
