Fielding Questions

Fielding Questions

Mandy Bell and Sarah Langs are reporters for MLB.com, covering the most important stories in baseball. They’re also long-distance best friends who talk every day about the big questions inside the game and out, like why baseball makes normally rational people so superstitious and what makes an unforgettable ballpark experience. On Fielding Questions, Mandy and Sarah will try to answer one of those questions each episode by talking to fans, talking to each other and talking to some of the biggest names in MLB.

Everybody in baseball seems to have a nickname, and each one has a unique origin story. Some are bestowed by a creative broadcaster or a descriptive teammate, while others date all the way back to childhood. Sarah and Mandy wanted to hear how some of the biggest stars in MLB got their nicknames, so they asked Francisco Lindor, Nelson Cruz, Don Mattingly and more! There’s something magical about the drama of a game that creeps into the late innings with one team still hitless. Mandy and Sarah tell their own favorite no-hitter stories, including one Mandy is still apologizing to her dad for almost 25 years later. Then they hear from Joe Musgrove, Lucas Giolito, Edwin Diaz and a few other Major Leaguers with unique perspectives on why no-nos are such a special part of baseball. To learn more...

We’ve come a long way from peanuts and Cracker Jack when ballparks are serving sushi and salad. Mandy and Sarah recall their most memorable stadium meals, including a plate-sized pork chop, and then take us inside MLB clubhouses to hear from Mark Canha, Cole Irvin and others about the best food spreads for players around the league. Sarah's favorite baseball stadium memory was from a game that didn't even count in the standings. Mandy finally felt at home in a new park during a Hall of Famer's final game. Some stadiums just have that special feeling – for players and for fans -- and we want to know why. So we asked Sean Manaea, Rich Hill, and a few other Major Leaguers for help. Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
