Appearance values ask: “What do they want from me?” Being values ask: “What do I truly desire?”

How appearance values disconnect us

The Pathwork Guide contrasts two fundamental ways of living: appearance values and being values.

When we operate from appearance values, our focus is on how we are perceived—seeking approval, avoiding criticism, and shaping our actions to impress others. This outward orientation disconnects us from our inner truth, leaving us anxious, uncertain, and dependent on external validation for our sense of worth.

Even when we succeed by these standards, we often feel empty and unfulfilled, because we are not living from our authentic selves. In this state, we lose touch with what we truly want and struggle to discern truth in ourselves and others.

By contrast, living from being values means acting with sincerity, integrity, and a genuine desire to contribute, without concern for recognition or approval. This inward alignment creates a stable sense of self-worth and opens the door to clarity, authenticity, and real fulfillment.

As we shift toward being values, we reconnect with our inner source and discover both our true desires and our creative power—the ability to shape our lives through clear, unified intention.

In this state, giving and receiving become one, and we experience a deeper sense of security, purpose, and connection to life itself.
