SPEAKER_00 (00:04):
Hello and welcome to Food Allergy and Your Giddo.
I'm your host, Dr.
Alice Hoyt.
Excited to talk to you todayabout Disney World.
So many of you go on trips toDisney because Disney is very
food allergy friendly.
I know this firsthand because wejust got back from Disney.

(00:25):
We've been before.
My husband, as many of you know, has a peanut allergy.
And so we've always been verymindful of where we vacation
because we want to be able tohave a great trip, right?
So when you're thinking aboutgoing to Disney though, there
can be um it can beoverwhelming.
And so today in this episode,I'm putting together very

(00:48):
succinctly, I mean, for real, Icould talk about this for days
and days and days.
Anyone could, right?
Like there's so much you cantalk about with Disney.
So this episode is really goingto be a very tactical approach
to planning your Disney trip sothat you can eat safely, really
enjoy your experience, and notbe overwhelmed.

(01:11):
So let's get started.
Okay, so I have four strategiesfor really making the most out
of your Disney trip.
The first strategy is to themeyour trip.
There are so, so many things youcan do in Walt Disney World.
I don't even know how long itwould take to do all of them,

(01:31):
but chances are you're going formaybe a long weekend, maybe a
week, maybe two weeks.
I mean, wow, right?
Whatever you're going for, though, you're not gonna be able
to do everything.
Going into the trip knowing thatwill help you because you're
gonna see all of these amazingthings when you get there, when

(01:52):
you're researching, you're like,I want to do this and this and
this and this and this.
And you can't do it all.
So a way my family has foundthat we can really get the most
out of our trip is to theme ourtrip.
And so what I mean by that isfor one of our trips, we were
like, you know what, let's go toAnimal Kingdom and really just

(02:14):
do Animal Kingdom.
And some of you out there arelike, what?
You just did Animal Kingdom.
Yes, we just did Animal Kingdom.
And in Animal Kingdom, there'sthis uh Wilderness Explorer
Guide, little like passportthing.
You go all around the park andengage with the wilderness
explorers um and uh learn aboutthe animals.

(02:35):
Kids get stickers to put intheir wilderness explorer guide.
Um, it's very cool.
It's a really cool way to reallyenjoy the park.
You still do the rides, youstill eat the food, but but we
themed that trip.
We stayed blessed to stay atAnimal Kingdom Lodge.
It was just really amazing.
And so, by really kind ofputting parameters on that trip,

(02:57):
we were really able to enjoythat trip.
The most recent trip that wewent on, um, we themed it as
let's have fun, let's have it alittle bit more of a relaxing
trip.
And so we enjoyed the resortmore.
We we happen to stay at AnimalKingdom Lodge again.
We really like animals.
We enjoyed the resort some.

(03:18):
We weren't in the parks thewhole time.
Now, some of you are like, oh mygosh, what?
You have to be in the parks thewhole time, from rope drop to
closure beyond fireworks, right?
Um, and you totally can do that.
And if you know going into yourtrip that that's the trip that
you're going to have, that isgonna help inform the other

(03:40):
choices you make.
It's gonna help inform where youstay.
It's gonna help inform what kindof food you're doing.
Are you doing more quickservices?
Are you doing more sit-downs,right?
And especially, um, I I know youlistening, you're a food allergy
parent, right?
Or you love somebody, you love achild who has a food allergy.
So food is going to be a reallyimportant priority for you to

(04:03):
have access to really deliciousfood.
And of course, this is avacation and this is Disney.
We want the kids to have thebest possible time and not feel
like they're excluded fromanything.
And so the first step to that,to having a successful trip, is
to really theme your trip sothat when you do get into that
decision tree of should we dothis or should we do this, but

(04:23):
we don't have time for that, youcan come back to the theme of
your trip and say, okay, whatreally aligns with what we're
really trying to accomplish withthis trip?
And that's gonna help you makethe choice you want to make to
have to have the trip that youwant to have.
Okay, the second strategy here.
So I said I have four, right?
So number one, theme your trip.
Number two, pick yourpriorities.

(04:46):
So once you've kind of likethemed out what kind of trip you
want to have, you want to lookat all the different attractions
they have, the rides, the shows.
The shows have gotten likereally good.
At Hollywood Studios, there's somany really great shows.
We did the Indiana Jones show.
We I hadn't done that indecades.
Um, my kids thought that waslike so cool, a little intense,

(05:07):
but cool, right?
We also did at Animal Kingdomthe new Finding Nemo show that
was amazing.
Also, y'all, at um at MagicKingdom, there is Enchanted
Tales with Belle, where you goand it's like you're going into
Belle's house, and the kids getto interact and put on a little

(05:28):
bit of a play, and you get tomeet Belle.
It is so cool.
So there are a lot ofattractions beyond the thrill
rides.
Um, Country Bear Jamboree, theyjust redid that recently.
Super, super cute, right?
So you want to, and not justcute, like really fun.
My husband and I we really get akick out of it.
Um, so you want to pick yourpriorities and start to list out

(05:52):
and ask your family, okay, well, what things do you really want
to do?
And make your list because thenyou can look at that list of
what everybody wants to do andmake sure everybody gets to do
most, hopefully, of what theywant to do.
And you're going into the trip, you're planning out, picking
what you want to do, aligning itwith your theme so that nobody's

(06:14):
disappointed that, oh, we didn'tget to do this and we thought we
were going to.
Planning goes a long way.
You're a food allergy person,you get this.
Planning goes a long way, especially when it comes to
planning your Walt Disney Worldtrip.
Um, number three, the thirdthing you're gonna do after
you've number one, themed yourtrip.
After number two, you've pickedout your priorities of what you

(06:35):
really want to do.
Um, you're gonna plan youractual days.
So I use a Google spreadsheetfor this and I plan out the the
actual like day at the top ofthe spreadsheet.
And if you're interested in thethings that I use, then reach
out um, you know, on Instagramat Hoyt FoodAlergy and um let me

(06:55):
know what sort of things thatyou're interested in because
maybe I'll expand on this um ordo like a bigger blog post or
something like that.
Um, but okay, so strategy numberthree is planning out your days
and like really planning thisout.
You want to know what parkyou're gonna go to going to go
to that day or parks.
You can park hop.
Um you can go to one park andthen go to another park and then

(07:15):
go to another park.
Um, it costs more on yourticket.
You want to plan out what parkyou're gonna be at, where you're
going to eat.
A lot of times, where you'reeating is really kind of
anchoring your day, especiallywhen it comes to families with
food allergies, because you wantto make sure your kiddo has
delicious food, right?
And of course, you want to planout your attractions then.
So I like to look at, okay, what's the theme of our trip?

(07:38):
That's gonna inform where we'restaying, what activities we
really want to do.
Okay, what day are we doing, what park?
When we went this recent trip,it was fall break.
And so we did a Thursday,Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
So knowing that Magic Kingdom isa super popular park on the
weekends, I mean, every day it'spopular, right?
But especially on the weekends,we did the Magic Kingdom on that

(08:00):
Thursday, and it was a pleasantcrowd.
Um, so we were able to do prettymuch everything we wanted.
And we did the lightning lane.
Um, we didn't do like the superfancy lightning lane, we didn't
do the VIP tour, but it was itwas great.
It all worked out really, reallywell because we we planned,
right?
And we had expectations goingin.

(08:20):
We were able to meet thoseexpectations, and we were able
to adopt when we were like, um,or adapt when we were like,
yeah, we don't really want to dothis, let's go back to the
hotel.
It was great.
And we had, you know, an amazinghotel.
All the Disney hotels arefantastic.
So strategy number three is planyour days.
So plan out what park you're at,where you're going to eat.
You research that in your pickyour priorities of like where

(08:43):
you want to eat, um, and thenwhat attractions you really want
to do.
Okay, so then number fourstrategies.
So number one, theme your trip, number two, pick your
priorities.
Number three, plan your days.
And then number four is dinesafely by being informed, right?
Um, and by informing.

(09:04):
So whenever you reserve a tableservice meal at Walt Disney
World, you go online and you doit through your My Disney
Experience app, and it isactually going to ask you what
are your allergies, and youactually select it.
That is probably the first timethat you were writing that down,

(09:28):
communicating that to them.
You may have called Disney andinquired about that restaurant
before you're actually bookingit, but a lot of times, you
know, I'll tell you, Disney isgood.
Well, Disney World is good withallergies.
So, what we do is we we havefollowed these strategies.
I go online, what is it, like 60days before you can start

(09:49):
booking this stuff?
Before your the first day ofyour trip, you can start booking
your dining reservations.
So if you're staying on propertyand all this stuff is subject to
change, right?
Like, I don't work for Disney.
This is just what I do in myfree time.
I love it.
So you go on a couple monthsbefore, you book your dining
reservations, you select thenwhat your allergies are.

(10:12):
Now, also day of, you were goingwhen you're checking in, you're
probably being asked by thehostess about allergies or the
host.
And if they're not, you're goingto tell them.
They usually ask though.
And then your server will talkwith you about it as well.
There should be m multiple touchpoints here where they're asking

(10:33):
about food allergies.
Now, you absolutely can alsosay, I'd really like to talk to
the chef.
The chef will come out and talkwith you about preparing you or
your child's food safely.
Disney really has set thestandard for this where you
don't get the eye roll like, okay, you get the we want to
make your or your child'sexperience magical, like super

(10:58):
magical.
So don't be hesitant to havethese discussions.
These are critical discussions.
Um, and if you're not doing atable service, then still, if
you're, if you're doing the walkup, um, the quick service,
you're gonna talk to the castmember.
That's what they call the teammembers, the employees, cast
members.
You're gonna talk to the castmember and let them know about

(11:21):
the allergy.
When you're looking at a Disneyallergy menu, yes, they have
separate allergy menus forpeople who have food allergies.
If, say, you have a peanutallergy, on the different
options that are okay for you,it's going to say for peanut
allergy.
So that's a little bit differentfrom other menus that I've seen,

(11:45):
but at Disney World, that's howthey do it.
If you have a peanut allergy andyou really want this fried
chicken dish and it's safe foryou, they're gonna say it's for
peanut allergy because you canhave it.
It is for you.
It's for you.
You know how how Disney does,it's it's magical, right?
Okay, so those are my fourstrategies for how to really

(12:09):
have a successful Disney trip.
Um, I'm gonna recap them.
You want to theme your trip.
Number two, you want to pickyour priorities.
Number three, you want to planout those park days.
And then number four, you wantto dine safely by informing and
then by being informed, talkingwith them, making sure that all

(12:30):
those ingredients are safe foryou, safe for your kiddo, and
you're really going to have avery, very, very magical
experience.
I I'm sure some people arewondering, well, what are some
of your favorite places to eat?
Some of my favorite places toeat in Walt Disney World.
In the Magic Kingdom, we reallylike Skipper Canteen.

(12:52):
It's themed after the junglecruise, and so the cast members
um are kind of silly and makesome silly jokes.
And the menu is pretty good.
You know, in Disney World, ifsomething is like spicy, it's
not like really spicy.
Um, it's very mild, spicy.
And y'all know I'm fromLouisiana, so like I'm used to a

(13:15):
little bit of heat.
Not I don't like a lot of heat, but like, you know, I like
season, a little spice.
Um, and so at Skipper Canteen, they really do a great job with
most of their dishes.
Um, I had one recently, tasteslike chicken because it is,
which is historically delicious, but they changed a recipe and it
was not as well seasoned.
Um, and so talk with your castmember about your your server

(13:39):
about what are some of theirfavorite items.
That's something I really liketo do.
And especially when you'reordering from the allergy menu,
you know, you're talking throughall the ingredients, even though
it's it's very clearly listedfor the top nine allergens, you
still, especially if you have anallergen that's not on those top
nine, you were talking througheverything.

(14:00):
And again, don't hesitate totalk to the chef.
This is the place to do it.
So it really communicate, inform, and be informed.
Um, but that's one of myfavorite places to dine.
We really like, we really likethe brown derby at Hollywood
Studios.
So you're probably like, okay, wow, she does a lot of sit-down

(14:22):
restaurants.
We do a lot of sit-downrestaurants.
Um, you know, we have youngkids.
We like to be able to just kindof like sit down, but because of
the food allergies, we do liketo kind of be able to just like
sit down, look.
We also um we like to be able tojust kind of like take a break
and rest a little bit.
And we like, I really like tohave a seat.

(14:44):
And sometimes at busy times, ifyou're going to a quick service,
sometimes it can be hard to finda seat, but other times it's
like perfectly fine, right?
Or you might be doing a tripwhere you're just like, well,
we're go, go, go.
And that's what's nice aboutDisney World is you can do kind
of whatever trip you want to do.
And if you're using thesestrategies, then the first thing
you're doing is you're themingyour trip to really identify,

(15:05):
like, we're gonna be in thepark, like from rope drop,
that's when it first opens, towhen it absolutely closes, or
you know, we really want to trythe different pools at the
resorts.
We did that too.
That's super fun.
Um, other favorite places that Ilike to eat in Epcot, I mean,
it's Epcot, like you can eat inso many amazing places.

(15:26):
France, of course, has anamazing um little cafe.
Um, they also at the land, theyhave a really good kind of food
court style where you can getallergen-safe things.
And again, like if you'resomewhere and you're you have
any questions, I mean, youshould be talking with the cast

(15:48):
member about food allergies.
They want to know it.
Disney does not want to have, right?
I am not um representing Disney.
I have no relationship withDisney other than they get some
of my money because I love goingto Disney.
Um, but they don't, they theywant you to have a magical time.
That's literally what they'reall about.

(16:09):
And then at Animal Kingdom, oh,Tusker House at Animal Kingdom
is really fun.
However, it is a buffet.
And so you want to really bemindful of buffets if you have a
food allergy because, of course,of cross contact.
So whenever you're booking, um,you want to talk, go ahead and
call those restaurants.
If you're interested in going toTusker House or another buffet,

(16:32):
then call and see what sort ofaccommodations that they can
make for you.
Um, again, Disney is very, verygood about accommodating to make
sure you have a magical, magicalexperience.
And so, you know, we've gottenquestions about Disney.
And so I wanted to give you guysmy strategies of what I do to
have a really magical trip sothat you and your family, if

(16:56):
you're thinking about going toDisney, that you too can have a
magical trip.
So it's great to join you today.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
