Speaker 1 (00:00):
Adult crime, Adult Time. That's how it goes. Guys, that's
a headline. Tete after me, adult crime, Adult Time.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
I feel like we're doing the five shut the gate.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
Well, it's a good slogan. David Chris the Fuley who
is trying to become the leader of our state, and
he did a big conference yesterday bringing in bigger changes
if they were to get into government. So we thought
we'd talked to him about it right now becase it's
something close to our hearts.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Good morning, David, Good morning, Emily, Jane, thank you for
having us.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Hey, look, you've been busy this morning, so thanks for
taking some time for us. Adult crime, Adult Time. We
love it.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
It has to happen. You just can't continue the images
of heartache, the number of victims, the broken use justice
system that goes round the round. And we believe if
we send a strong message about those serious crimes that
if you do an adult crime, you'll get adult time.
We're also doing some stuff at the other end of
the spectrum around fixing early intervention and making sure that

(00:59):
when kids are least from jail that they're not just
put back into the same environment and then return as
ninety percent of them do. What this also does is
it stops the next wave coming through. If you look
at robbery with intent, for example, once someone turns eighteen,
there's a seventy one percent drop in offending rate in
the last financial year. Now that doesn't just magically happen,

(01:22):
but all of a sudden, somehow, the message gets through
that there's no longer going to be that revolving door
and people learn from that. So it's about two ends.
It's the first is making sure that if there are
serious offenses, there's serious consequences and that has to apply.
But it also says to someone when they're coming through
their journey of crime that if you murder someone, that

(01:44):
person's life needs to matter and there needs to be
a consequence for it. And Queensland has been crying out
for it. And I can promise you listeners that if
government changes in October, it will be the first bill
that we take to the Parliament. It's going to be
called the Making Queensland Safe Laws. It'll remove the tension
as the last resort. It'll embed the rights of victims
ahead of the rights of offenders. It'll have the provision

(02:07):
for adult crime, for adult time for serious offenses. But
I also want to get serious about fixing Rezi Care
to give kids in that state owned care some hope
and some opportunity to transition to foster care. We want
to fix child safety, to make sure that there's resources
at the front line. We have to make sure that
early intervention works. And you guys are big supporters of ESWAV,

(02:29):
as I have been for a long time, and thanks
to your fundraiser in that space, that didn't go unnoticed,
I can promise you. But it's about making sure that
right across the board we fix what is a broken
news justice system. But the other element is when they
are released. At the moment in Queensland there's a ninety
one percent repeat offense rate. They're back in prison within

(02:49):
twelve months ninety one percent. Now, what we want to
do is make sure that every child when they leave
detention is given the support to be able to turn
their life around. And when I say every child, I
mean every single child will have somebody supporting them. Now,
that is a financially sensible decision to make and a
socially compassionate one to make, and it makes sure you

(03:11):
give every chance to turn someone around and not have
to put them back in jail. Look. Look, if you
look at Queenslin's youth crime crisis, you can go back
ten years and you can drop a pin to twenty fifteen,
when things like detention as the last resort were removed,
when things like bail offenses being breached no longer madded.
There was a raft of changes and the government gloated

(03:32):
about it at the time. But we've now got a
generation of untouchables, repeat hardcore offenders, and what I want
people to understand is we have to clamp down on
those those hardcore ones, the ones ramming police cars and
carrying knives. We must do that, but we also have
to stop that pipeline coming through, and it involves a
kind of gold standard early intervention that you guys often

(03:53):
talk about, and it's about making sure that there's a
deterrent scent that if you do an adult crime, you
will get adult times, and.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Then it stops the gangs also recruiting. So we need
to do that too. Well. David CHRISTOPHERI thank you so much,
and you know, good luck with it all. We're on
board obviously because of everything we've done with Est Wave,
and we want we want the kids to have a future,
so whatever we can do to help them would be great.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
I'm a big fan of what Joe does. He's he's
a wonderful human and he's making a difference to the
lives of some remarkable young men. So thanks for what
you've done for them too,
