Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's the Gold Coast.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
It's Gaily and Emily Jade wanted tonight hot tomato. And
we are joined by a local woman, Mia Sims on
the phone, whose life changed dramatically one night in a
fleeting moment.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Nia, good morning, Hi, Hey are big congratulations on winning
the Gold Coast Local Hero Award there the Young gold
Coaster Award.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
It was a compelling story to read in the Gold
Coast bulletin and we really had to get you on
how you you know your actions we believe saved a
man's life. Do you want to tell everyone what happened?

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Yeah, of course. So it was late, it was late
at night. I decided to drive to my partner's power
and I was driving over an overpass I drove on
every single day, and I saw this man and I
had this awful gut feeling and I realized what was happening,
and I knew I had to intervene. So he was

(00:54):
actually on the overpas trying to take his own life.
It was very confronted. I drove past about three times.
I couldn't stop. It wasn't safe. Ended up driving to
a nearby police station, which is typically it's normally closed,
and thankfully there was an officer there and I went
up and banged on the door and she dispatched a

(01:15):
team of officers and they were able to go up
and save him. Wow.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Did I'm stressful? How stressful for you?

Speaker 3 (01:24):
It was a lot?

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Yeah? So well you can hear it even now how
you're reacting to that you're a Miss Universe Australia finalist.
I would imagine when the person saw you go past
three times. I was wondering if he thought that the
angels were trying to actually give him giving him a
warning to stay fo God, I don't.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Think I honestly don't even think he clocked that I'd
driven past that many times.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
I called the police the next morning and they said
they couldn't give me any information, which was totally understandable.
And then someone reached out to my mum. I'm thinking
it was around the time they were nominating me, and
they let her know that he did survive. So that
was just a huge relief. My souldiers would be yea.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
Ding for twelve months about this person.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
Yeah, it was it was a lot, but I'd much
driver be left with that feeling. Then, you know, let
someone go through that and all the people little effects
in his life. So I'd much rather deal with that.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
How often in that twelve months when you didn't know,
how often did you think about that moment? Was it
on your mind constantly?

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Oh makes me upset things. Every time my driver over
that overpass, I would just think that I saw him.
There was a few times where I was convinced that
I could see him, and so I'd have to drive
over the overpass and drive under it about five times.
I just I just had no idea. But yeah, it
makes me emotional thinking about that. But it did take

(02:54):
a big toll on my life and my family's life.
But again, I'd much rather live with that than live
with the guilt of not helping him.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
So it's something you know, obviously to consider. People are
going through such hard times and if you need any help,
thirteen eleven fourteen is the number to caur Lifeline. And well,
all's well, that ends well for you, though, Now this award,
which sounds so well deserved, and then knowing that what
you did that night mattered, yes it was.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
It was such a shock and I didn't expect to
be recognized and I definitely didn't expect to win it,
but I was just so honored to be there. But
as I said when I was there, it's not about me.
I'm just a normal person who's you know, done an
active kindness and I just need to spread that message
and raise awareness for mental health and encourage people to
reach out and ask for help.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Do you know how you were going through that trauma
every time you went over the bridge. Has that ceased
a little bit now for you knowing that he's come through.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
Yeah, I definitely still when I drive over there, I
think about it, I see it, but then I get relieved.
I come back and I realized, you know, he is okay,
and this has turned into a good thing, and you know,
we're spreading a good message.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
So yeah, Well, in a world where a lot of
young people are insular as far as they're looking inward
at what's happening in their own life, it's nice to
meet a young lady that's actually looked outwards and helped
someone else.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Thank you. That's so kind. Thank you, And.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
If you require a lifeline, they are available right now.
Thirteen eleven fourteen.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
It's gaily and
