Speaker 1 (00:00):
Coach through these conversations, ever, get easier on the front
end and also in the back end tryout guys. I know,
that's probably one of the hardest things to do with
at practice at these camps.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Yeah, no, because you have a tremendous amount empathy for
these guys that come out here and are doing everything
they're asked to do. And there's only so many spots
on an NFL roster, and those get taken away after
each a few weeks here in training camp. But I
told those guys, I appreciate the day one, and let's
go out here and have a good day too, and
we'll see how it goes.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
We can see a.
Speaker 4 (00:31):
Bunch of your you know, higher drafted guys, the hiants
and banks to get in there in the individual or
seven to seven I should say, five drills.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
What's your thought process behind that?
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, I mean they've been on the road quite a bit,
had a lot of visits. So again, the one of
the main things is just come out of here healthy,
let them figure out how we do some things where
some things are and then get a look at some
of the tryout guys as well. They'll have plenty of
time to get a lot of reps here, you know,
over the next called a few in.
Speaker 5 (01:00):
Terms of the draft picks, how much do you use
these couple of days and you're not getting them on
the field a lot, and you use these couple of
days to kind of confirm the things that you thought
about them through the process.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
I just think it's a kind of a start over
evaluation process for all those guys you meet, You prepare
in terms of the selection of the player, but now
that they're.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
Here and they're figuring out how we do.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Things, there's you only put so many things in with
with each player per se. So Jalen, you know, all
the other receivers, we did the same thing with them
to see how they pick things up. But there's even
a little bit more now, and there'll be some more,
you know, in a couple of weeks when they get back.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Kind of get their feet with. What do you view Eric.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Ray being able to do at this level and what
do you hope to see for mean, not just this
camping going for.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Yeah, I know, I think it was a good college
football player.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Again, until he's out here with with our players and
competing against our guys doing the stuff we ask them,
you know, I'm not gonna wait until August or Timber
to see what we're at on that one.
Speaker 6 (02:05):
Uh, so we're probably in now.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
You know, your two gets in the league. Have you
seen an evolution of that position? Running back?
Speaker 6 (02:13):
You know, do you think it's it's it's pretty you know,
the money has been an evolution, the the usage.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
The combos, uh, you know, passing out the back and
all that stuff.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
I I think it's really just an evolution of the
game in and of itself. You're always gonna have big
backs that can stick it in there and run downhill.
You may have some receiving backs or some backs that
can play on all three downs.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
I don't really think that's been different since I've been
in the league.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
You know, the usage of the player again, you know,
running back, there's cer certain guys have different skill sets,
you know, pass backs running backs in terms of just
handling the ball, but.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Like to utilize guys that can do in a both
in both phases.
Speaker 7 (02:54):
When you were in k when you were in Kansas City, Uh,
didn't uh your running back out monster year number wise?
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Jamal? Yeah, Yeah, Jamal had a good year.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Think Reggie had one of his better years at Miami
Peyton hillis Again, it's just depending on the team what
you have. So uh, if you have a bunch of
receivers or if tight ends or running backs, your job
as a coach is to figure out how to use
your your guys that are best enter team.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Would you like to lighten safe ones load? Uh a
little bit? And and how do you feel about like
two backs system?
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Well, it depends on what we have out here on
August and heading around see what we got in terms
of you know, players, loads and how much.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
I mean, it's a completely different team.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
We'll we'll see how it goes once we once we
get out here and compete with the paths and in
training camp in preseason games.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Right, I knew you have an.
Speaker 8 (03:47):
Idea of what these players can do before they come. Nay,
once you get him out on the field and you
start to see him in person, do you ever see yourself? Well,
you know, maybe we could do this and add this
to the playbook. I mean do they ever inspire you
in that way or do you just kind of have
a set way of doing things as far as you
know the playbook?
Speaker 2 (04:04):
And yeah, no, not not at all, not writing maybe
not right now, but once Phase three hits and we're
out here and practice a little bit, and albeit without
pads and training camp, certainly you do that. So if
there's something that you see from a particular player that
maybe you didn't see on tape, whether it's in college,
whether it's with another team, you definitely want to do that.
(04:26):
I don't think you just have a playbook and say
here's what we're gonna run. I think the playbook is
predicated on what the players do well.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
That category. You know. Yeah, absolutely, Look.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
We'll put it in many guys back there as we
can to figure that one out. But again it's a
ways a way.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
How much you one at one time are in the
tryout guys and how much kind of time are they
getting in your position purchase.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
I would say that it's it's pretty consistent with how
we do a normal kind of Phase three in terms
of the meetings. Eight o'clock, they come in, they from
a T eight fifty five with their position coaches or
maybe Wink wants to meet with them for ten minutes,
Kafka does we have a little team meeting, They go
back out, they have another long meeting with their position coaches.
Then we do a walkthrough and then we come out
(05:14):
here and then watch the tape. Then we go back
in and you call it two thirty today and you know,
finish watching the tape. But I'd say this camp they
have a little bit more with their individual coaches because
there's a lot less install So Kafka's not up there
for forty minutes installing plays.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
You know, there's five plays a day here.
Speaker 6 (05:35):
There like the Trywn guys, especially to put again that
I don't know that relationship with a guy has done
them as parts.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Yeah, No, it's really important.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
They're the ones meeting with them for you know, a
few hours a day. And that's why we don't put
in a whole lot in this type of camp because
we want to see who can pick things up for
you know, call it five six plays, A couple of
defenses be really detailed. If they're st ruggling with that,
then that's that's an issue.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Dames.
Speaker 6 (06:03):
Where are you with with Jalen in terms of perhaps
the necessity of him to broaden a little bit of
the routree and that.
Speaker 5 (06:10):
Kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
I'm I'm good with Jaylen again. Yeah, he's been asked
to do certain things. He's had a couple of different
coaches in college. Again, day one out here did everything
we asked him to do, and each day we'll build
off that.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Daves, what was your pre draft contact with Baldinotto. I'm
always interested by guys who are a little raw. I
guess he grew up in Rome and whatnot.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Yeah, well, not a lot. Yeah, not a lot.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
With Jalen I, how much did your did that Alabama
game kind of pop off the tape for you guys?
How much you ticket played into you know, the evaluation
of him as a player too.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
You know he mentioned how that kind of you know, yeah,
five touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
But I think you know, again, when you're evaluating these guys, Jordan,
you go back, it's it's not one game. Particularly with
our scouting department, they've watched every game usually for two
sometimes three years. Once the coaches get involved, you know,
it's probably not as extensive as is what the scouts
have been. But you know, that's definitely a game we
(07:20):
looked at. I wouldn't be wouldn't say it's a deciding
factor by any stretch, but it was. It's in Alabama, Like, yeah,
well he plays in the SEC, so yeah, I mean
he plays.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
In the SEC.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
It's a pretty good conference down there. No, he I
mean he had an outstanding game, no question about it.
But he was a he was a productive player for him,
good speed, had good intangibles. We have with him on
a thirty visit, it was kind of all encompassing.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Did you call you after that? He said, he was
that that game? You call you immediately after?
Speaker 2 (07:50):
No, we were busy playing, getting a game, getting getting
ready for a game. So you know those type of
conversations when they're on colleges and looking at college players.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
We're pretty busy in our business. And forgot who it
was we played.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
I remember we were home because there was a lot
of guys down in the cafeteria watching the end of
that game.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
No, but he didn't call me.
Speaker 7 (08:14):
John Mike with John Michael, I mean, you guys say
all the time that for your offensive lineman and defensive
lineman or evaluation really doesn't start until, you know, five
days at the training camp.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
But when you have a rookie like that, yeah, uh
who y, you.
Speaker 6 (08:27):
Know eventually you'll you'll count on a lot. Do you
kind of set out that schedule for him in terms
of what the next couple of months would be. I mean,
because yeah, this guy who's you know, I'm not gonna
hit somebody again until Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
I mean really for those for the linemen on both sides,
it's it's a lot of mental work and then it's
a lot of technique work, albeit without pads. So you know,
Bobby's done a great job. You know, we've been together
here for the past five years. You know he's got
a good plan, not just for for him, but for
all the linemen. Uh, there's a lot of calls and
a lot of different things that you know, maybe we
(09:04):
call things that he did in that Minnesota and maybe
some more protections. But you know, it's a long you know,
playing offensive line in this league, whether it's tackle, center, guard,
it's it's a challenging position early on in your career.
Speaker 6 (09:18):
Is he getting anything out of you notice that for
seven on sevens he's flipping the ball.
Speaker 7 (09:24):
What are you trying to get out of that? For him?
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Just making the calls and no, just just to have
him snap the ball to the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
You know, usually there's an equipment guy up there because
they're doing one on ones when we got pads on
and things like that. But just get him some extra
snaps to the quarterback, letting him hear the quarterback's cadence.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
That's that's about it. Agent, Actually, yeah, Jeremiah.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
Did that help?
Speaker 8 (09:49):
Does that?
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Does that help?
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Did you talk to Jeremiah at all during the process,
because that like maybe he knows some of the offense
like made that's a little different for the agent to
be a former player.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
For Yeah, I'd say, look, Jeremiah, he was a very
smart player. You know what we did when I was
with him is you know, probably a little bit different now.
But you know, certainly I think having someone like that
for John Michael is probably a benefit.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
You'd have to ask him.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
I've stayed in contact with Jeremiah, you know, and a
lot of different things.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
Got a lot of.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Trust in him, So it's good to be able to
bounce some things off of him, and you know, regarding
players that he may may represent.
