The tradition of decorating trees may have originated with the ancient Romans, who decorated trees with metal during Saturnalia, their winter festival. Middle Ages In the Middle Ages, evergreens were decorated with apples to symbolize the feast of Adam and Eve on Christmas Eve. 16th century Germany In 16th-century Germany, Christians decorated evergreen trees with apples, nuts, and candles. Martin Luther is said to have added candles to a tree after being inspired by the stars twinkling among evergreens. 18th century Europe The Christmas tree became popular in parts of Europe, especially among the nobility. 19th century Britain Queen Victoria and Prince Albert popularized the tradition in Britain by publishing a drawing of their family around a Christmas tree. 19th century United States The first records of Christmas trees being cut for display in the United States are from the 1820s in Pennsylvania's German community. However, Christmas trees were seen as pagan symbols and not accepted by most Americans until later. 20th century Artificial trees became popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Electric lights became popular as Christmas tree decorations. 21st century Most Christmas trees sold commercially in the United States come from Christmas tree farms.
