(00:01):
And it's also way, way cheaper.
Ding ding dingYeah, you're gonna be shocked.
You're gonna stay tuned.
You're gonna crap your payshocking
salute. Oh boy. Well, that's notwhat I need.
The mood just fell outHELLO, CAT and Tiff. How are you

(00:25):
doing?
I'm doing well. I feel like wealways start with like, voices.
I know. I'm like, there's alwayslike a mid north Atlantic
accent. Because we're selfconscious.
Yeah, big insecurity. Yeah. Sothe last time we chatted, I was
about to head to theNetherlands. And I'm happy. That

(00:46):
sounds wrong. I'm not happy toreport them back. But I made it
back.
Congrats. Yeah, well done. Idid it. But it was great. And I
actually did chat with myfriends neighbor who works in
sustainability stuff.
Awesome.
Isn't that funny? Is like justhappened to be my.

(01:08):
Yeah. Yeah, Kismet. I kind offeel like in the Netherlands,
it's kind of like go that's alegit job there.
Yeah, he does, like investing, but sustainability investing ESG
if you will impact environmentalsustainability and governance.
Well, it's actually different. Ilearned from him. Oh, yeah.

(01:28):
Impact Investing is much morereal. Because of ESG is
kind of a Yeah, it's kind of ait might be grenouille. Yeah,
I think it depends on thecompany. But yeah. Anyway, that
was kind of cool. And yeah, itseems like the whole country is
way more interested insustainability. And everybody

(01:51):
bikes. It's so quiet. Yeah. Imean, it's just so strange,
because you're in downtown. Andit's like, not answering
bicycles. Yeah, yeah. Amsterdamis bigger, but where they were
living. It's a small, basically, village. And it was so quiet

(02:12):
just because cars so yeah, like the freeway down the
street, right? Yes, exactly. So it was,
it was really eye opening, although it was kind of
interesting. And I want to lookinto this. I was talking to her
neighbor about how much plasticpackaging they use in the
grocery store, because I wassort of blown away by how much

(02:32):
there was a single thing waswrapped or just
wrapped in plastic. Interesting.
Yeah.
And I mean, we do that here inthe US too. But it was just sort
of surprising. And I guess theyrecently passed some sort of law
like what was it? Oh, I think itwas cert a certain fruits and

(02:55):
vegetables. One sec. Try that.
Yeah, there's certain fruits andvegetables can't be wrapped in
plastic anymore. But this guy,her neighbor was saying that
like 95% of plastic getsrecycled
in the Nether. Even plasticfilms and things.

(03:17):
Yeah. And I was like, that'sinsane. Because I think it's
like 5% in the US. So yes, yeah.
Yeah. I really want to look intothat. But it was cool, because
they had these really easy. Likerecycling little facilities
little like, well, he asked him, basically, yeah. And she said it

(03:37):
was like a big tub in thegrounds was like this huge
underground bunker where it fita bunch of stuff. But then up on
top, it was just this littleslot that you throw in. Yeah. So
yeah, that was it was reallycool. It was glassy.
That's great. That I mean,that's really exciting.

(03:58):
Yeah, so we'll definitelywhenever we talk about
recycling, we'll look into theNetherlands. Yeah.
What other countries are doingit? Yeah. Yeah. Better. Yeah.
Which they probably okay. I'msorry. I have to pause. Yes. My
dog just busted into the roomand opened the door and then
left in that lab headquarterslike I just gotta get close the

(04:18):
door guys one secondhe just doesn't like closed
doors. It's against against hisreligion. That's hilarious.

(04:39):
Yeah, my dog does the samething. And it's very annoying
when it's a child sleeping inthe room. You're just going to
kill you.
Like I just wanted to make sureeverything was okay.
I think she likes the soundmachine. It's very annoying
anyway.
It's fine. Yeah. Okay. Dogs.
They're there they are, but theyBut okay, so we have a pretty

(05:03):
big episode, which is surprisinggiven the topic.
Yeah, I was I was assuming itwas gonna be like a one and done
like, think tank. I knowhomemade.
Homemade all purpose cleaner iswhat we're talking about and you
think it'd be like what is it?
Is it works?
Yeah. Who who's who's itmurdering? How

(05:26):
can you move on? Well, no. Sowell, I have a question first.
Yes. How is it different fromhomemade glass cleaner?
Okay. Well, that's theinteresting thing. And I have a
definition of all purposecleaner for Yeah. Oh, goody.
Okay, yeah, so the cool thingis, since we do research, we

(05:46):
each research differentepisodes. I feel like we go down
different rabbit holes. So it'skind of nice, right? Like we
cover different things. Is thatyour dog back?
No. Okay, Ithought you heard it back.
No, no. Sorry. No, no, nothing.
Nothing. Nothing nothing.
And so. So yeah, I think I mean,I will answer how it's different

(06:09):
than how many glass cleaner butokay. Yeah, we can just get into
it if you want.
Yeah, let's let's dance. Nowright.
Do the sambaall purpose cleaner Samba?
Yeah. So first off, I named mysources. I I can't see it's so

(06:33):
funny when you edit this stuff.
Because now you realize howannoying your sound? Yeah,
you're like,Oh, God, stop clicking. Yeah,
exactly.
Okay, sources, National Libraryof Medicine for the all purpose
cleaner definition. And I usethe Environmental Working Group
for ratings of all purposecleaner and a few other products

(06:56):
that I talked about. The sprucehas a really good handling. It's
always the same. We love thespruce. I know we just they're
just so good. They have theireight best all purpose cleaners
were they rated just sort ofregular standard all purpose
cleaners that you could find atmost stores. Three DIY all
purpose cleaner options fromInsider. whoo that I looked into

(07:19):
Consumer Reports. I use them onthey talked about vinegar using
vinegar on stone countertops, and how you're supposed to. Oh,
surprise. Yep. Then I lookedinto a different article from
countertop. specialty.com abouthydrogen peroxide on
countertops.

(07:39):
Okay, so you'll seeare you like what
is happening? How manyI know I'm telling you this is
it's a big, big episode. Yeah.
Then I use the kitchen forcastile soap because I don't
know if you remember I said Iwas gonna look into castile
soap. Yeah, and so the kitchen Iuse them for castile soap. A

(08:01):
couple of articles about castilesoap and a recipe for castile
soap all purpose cleaner. Okay.
I also use Dr. Bronner'swebsite, which is a castile
soap, basically the one that youknow, cast Yeah,
we all know Dr. Bronner's, or weare.
I also looked at the Okay, so Ilooked at the National Library

(08:21):
of Medicine twice, but for twodifferent reasons for this
episode. The other one was forantibacterial properties of
peppermint, which isfascinating.
Yep, it's giving in to theessential oils.
We're gonna get there.
I know. And then I looked at BobVila, and I figured he would

(08:44):
know of anybody if we if youhave no castile soap on
hardwood, and he gives us theanswer. Okay. And then he's an
Amazon and target for prices onproducts. Cool. So what is all
purpose cleaner? The NationalLibrary of Medicine says all
purpose cleaner can be used fordifferent cleaning tasks in and

(09:04):
around the house. So it's mostlyused in the kitchen in the
bathroom, specifically forfloors, sinks and toilets. Okay.
Yeah. So it's kind of funnybecause this article at National
Library of Medicine went allinto all purpose cleaners, and
they were like, they saidconsumers place high demands on
all purpose cleaners. They wantthem to have surface protection,

(09:25):
residue free drying on cleanservice. Good skin
compatibility, yeah. easyhandling, appropriate foaming
behavior.
I'm gonna put that in my Bumbleprofile. I would like
appropriate foaming behavior.
I'm sorry, please continue.

(09:47):
I love that so much. And thenyou could also put this in your
Bumble profile. Ishould just list all of all like
I am looking for good skincompatibilities In
the perfect man, easy handling. Yes. Good.

(10:08):
Residue free residue freedrying.
Yes. And the last one ispleasant scent.
Oh 100% That is so all of mydating profiles. I'm updating
them right now. Going on them insix months and I'm just gonna go
in now just that list and see ifanyone notices they're like, Are
you describing all purposecleaner? I'll marry the first

(10:29):
man who asks me that. Exactly.
I totally love it so much.
You'll have to link to thatwhenever you change it.
Now you're asking me to get backon the dating apps that fate
worse than death? No, no,no, no, no, that's no fun.
Although I met Joe on OKCupid, but that was back when OKCupid
wasnormal. Like solid. Yeah. Okay.

(10:50):
Keep it was great. Yeah,it really was. But now it's I
hear not great. I haven'tnoticed it.
Because I just mentioned, okay,we don't yeah, we're not
discussing the sustainability ofdating apps. That's in season
three. Yeah, totally. Okay, so all purpose
cleaners can come in liquidspray form or as like wet
tissues. So wipes.

(11:12):
Guessing that's the leastsustainable option, but I'm not
gonna say anything.
Yeah, I actually didn't lookinto them to be honest. But
yeah, cuz it's just like, hey, use your own paper towels
and quit throwing things away.
Exactly. Listen to on paper onpaper towel episode.
Bugatti Knodel.
Okay, so all purpose cleaner. Sojust like a lot of other

(11:35):
cleaners can contain this isfrom the same NIH art not in
age, national health. What is itnational
hospitals, national makeup anacronym any acronym will do.
So they contain surfactants, which I talked about in laundry
detergent, which is basicallyjust soap. They contain
builders, which is like citricacid, which is basically like

(12:01):
lemons. Right? Like such. Okay, yeah. Okay. Yeah. Hydro tropes
and solvents. Which to behonest, I didn't look that up.
And I don't know what that is.
But that's that's in there. Anda lot of them have additives
like dyes, fragrances,preservatives, skin, protecting
agents, and, and water. So allof these things that I just
listed are between like maximumlike one to 10%. Oh, water is 75

(12:24):
to 95%. Holy cannoli. Yeah, sothat means that you're paying
tons of money, I mean, actually, turns out to be tons of money
compared to what you could payif you do DIY it. but
spoiler alert, spoiler alert, tons of money to
buy in store water. So this sortof leads into my next bullet

(12:51):
point, why would you want tomake your own first reason? I
mean, I just said it, you're,you know, buying water and
storing water. Number two, youcan control what's in it. So the
same National Library ofMedicine study examined all
purpose cleaning sprays. It'samazing that people get paid to

(13:14):
do this. And I'm so happy. Butyeah, so they found that you're
using this a default. I don'tknow why I wrote 364 times per
year on kitchen countertops.
It's supposed to be 365. Becausethat's how many days there are
but that's okay.
You were like I'm taking awayleap year and they're like,
that's not actually how thatworks.

(13:36):
April Fool's nobody cleans.
Okay. Yeah, so you're, you're,you're kind of using this stuff
every day. So that's a prettybig exposure inhalation on your
skin, that type of thing. Thatmakes sense. Yeah. And I looked
into my favorite, theEnvironmental Working Group,
which rates products likehousehold products for on a
scale from A to F based on theirtoxicity and their aquatic

(13:58):
toxicity and all of the above?
Yeah, more, all purpose cleanersget a D or an F, then an A
through A C. Okay. So most get aD or an F that are on the
market. There are some nicerones. Yeah, so there are some
decent ones, but there's gonnabe other reasons why you

(14:18):
definitely don't want to bother.
I have guesses. Yeah, so thefunny thing is some of the EPS
were called like a lot of theones with bleach in them got EPs
and I think it's just because ofthe bleach. Okay, ego Daisy. Got
an F Yep. So eco Daisymultipurpose cleaner got enough.
A few of the sense of one calledgrab green countertop cleaner.

(14:40):
Got X. Green Hawaii. Yes. Sixgreen Hawaii. Exactly. And then
green works which did we talkabout Green Works before? No, I
don't think we have but it was adifferent brands different
green. Yeah, different green.
Who cares? It's all the same.
But Green Works naturally doesdirect I'm all purpose cleaner
with lemon got an F? So it'slike these damn brands.

(15:06):
You're not anxious capitalizingon the green washing. Yes,
exactly. So the otherinteresting thing is that some
of the top rated all purposecleaners aren't safe for
contact, top rated. And in asense of like the spruce like
said that they work really well.
They're not actually safe forcontact with food surfaces, even
though most people use them inthe kitchen.

(15:27):
So don't use it on your cuttingboards just on your
right. But even countertops islike think about how much food
actually tested it fallsdown and yeah, or just you just
put the onion there for a minutewhile
you Yeah, move your hands orwhatever. Yeah, yeah,
just looking the countertops.
Yeah. All right. So that's whenone big reason is you can

(15:49):
control what's in your allpurpose cleaner. Another reason
is, it's simpler. So what I havefound is I make my own and I
have for like a year. Andhonestly, a huge reason was
because I was so tired ofremembering to order the stupid
thing. The one thing that doesthe mold. This is multipurpose,
but it does like a couple ofthings. And now it's like I can

(16:12):
have a couple of ingredients andjust mix them together. It takes
two seconds. And then you canalso use it for other things.
Yeah, exactly. What so there'sless extra packaging if you're
buying because I just reuse thesame bottle over and over. And
it's also way, way cheaper.
Ding ding ding.
Yeah, you're gonna be shy.
You're gonna stay tuned. You'regonna

(16:35):
grab this shocking salute. Oh,boy. Well, that's not what I
need.
The mood just fell.
Just, I'm gonnaand also the DIY, in my opinion,
the DIY stuff can work just aswell. So, I mean, yeah, yeah.
Okay, let's talk about DIY allpurpose cleaners.

(17:09):
Three options from insider, plusan extra one that I'm going to
say I recommend and you'llyou'll understand why. So real
quick, vinegar and water. RVsare these one half cup distilled
white vinegar in two cups ofwater. You can add a little
lemon essential oil if you wanta better scent. Okay, pros. It's

(17:31):
affordable. It kills some germs.
it annihilates hard waterdeposits and unite elites. Yeah,
I put that word in there becauseno joke. Vinegar is amazing at
that. It cuts through dirtworks. Well. Some cons vinegar
doesn't disinfect completely. Soit does a little bit not
completely.

(17:52):
I mean, okay, we can talk aboutI know,
that's a whole debate. Right?
Right. And we will probably getinto it. We're gonna get into
it. Yeah. You shouldn't use iton wood, tile or grout because
the acid can damage it. Andaccording to Consumer Reports,
you shouldn't use vinegar onnatural stone countertops

(18:13):
because it can eat away at theprotective layer, and then it's
a poor service. I was using iton my countertops for a long
time. And then I was like, oh,shoot, then I learned this. So
damnit. Yeah, so there's that.
The next option they give youfor a recipe is borax plus
vinegar. I'm going to pass onthe borax because it gets a D

(18:35):
from the Environmental WorkingGroup. Okay, yeah, fair. Yeah.
So they do say that you can swapit with baking soda, which is
gets an A sookay. It's still fun. Okay,
yeah, I guess borax has like, cancer issues, right?
Probably. I don't know. I don'tknow exactly what it is that I
thought that was I Oh, yeah, Ijust know, it's a lot more

(18:56):
potent. It's more more intense, like cubistic maybe? Yeah, even
then washing soda. It's like oneof the more powerful cleaner. So
yeah, I don't know what's in itthough. So for this, so for the
baking soda. 1/4. This is myleast favorite. To be honest.
You use a quarter cup of vinegarand one cup of baking soda and
then you apply it to the surfacesort of like a paste I think.

(19:19):
Okay, and then you wait fiveminutes and then wipe it away.
So the pros are, it'saffordable. You can use it on
most surfaces. I think it's fineto use on. Oh, no, it's got
vinegar in it. Right. Anyway.
Use it on most surfaces. Itmight be okay, but and then it
also can help remove stains ifyou leave it on long enough.
Yeah, Baking soda is great. Butyou have to make it each time

(19:42):
you want to use itright because it'll go bad or
dissipate or whatever.
Yeah, so it's not a spray. It'snot something you can store
which I don't love because who'sgoing to do that? I mean I
when I need to clean a pan forthe record, just throw vinegar
and baking soda in it.
But yeah, we should sointeresting because actually the
two that's probably why youcan't store it because the two

(20:05):
counter counter balance eachother kind of like they should
cancel each other out.
Yeah, they they interact. Imean, they create a reaction
that the foam Yeah, the bubbles, so it makes sense.
I do that for other things too.
But yeah, so yeah, you can'tlike store it, which is
annoying. But hey, if it's nothow No, I just can't imagine
cleaning my counters with thatevery day. Yeah, so it's not

(20:29):
it's also not a fulldisinfectant. So the third one
is kind of interesting. I wouldhave never thought to do this,
but it's hydrogen peroxide.
Another bubbler, a bubbler.
Gotta love that bubbly. Yeah,it's just straight up hydrogen
peroxide in a spray bottle andyou spray
it. That's it? Oh, okay. Yeah, not even though you don't even

(20:50):
need to add baking soda.
No, not according to thisrecipe. You can add a few drops
of essential oils if you wantShem.
Shut your mouth. How dare you?
besmirch us with essential oil.
We'll see. And then you justspray it and wipe it away. So
the pros for this one isaffordable. You can store it,

(21:10):
obviously until you use itbecause it's just hydrogen
peroxide. It's easy to makedon't even have to make
more than about Yeah, just add ascrew top. Exactly.
It totally disinfects so it's areally good disinfectant and
hospitals use it. Didn't knowthat. I know. And it doesn't
smell like vinegar, which is apro in my book. That is

(21:32):
that is a pro and you can justsquirt it in your mouth to
debride canker sores.
There you go. Yeah, exactly. Youcan use it for so many things.
Dye your hair. You can oh mygosh, you're gonna be a whole
new person once you come out ofthat kitchen.
Oh my god. I'm just blind.
Blind. No canker sores. Freshmouth. My new Bumble profile me

(21:52):
newly blonde. No, canker sorescompletely disinfected kitchen.
You fresh scent, skin.
compatibilities incredible.
foaming. Whatever the fuck yeah,I don't remember except except x
appropriate, foaming orappropriate. Foaming
consistently? Yeah. I love it.

(22:15):
So the cons of hydrogen peroxideis two things. You can't mix it
with vinegar because it createsparasitic acid, which can
irritate your skin and corrodesurfaces. I didn't know this
fair. So if you're like usingvinegar to clean other stuff,
you probably don't want to mixit up.
But it's not like ammonia andbleach where you suffocate and
die.
No, it's not gonna like create abomb and explode your house or

(22:35):
anything but cool. It mightstill. Yeah, it might make your
skin a little edgy.
And your counter a little itchy.
Yeah.
Super easy, super cheap camera.
And then it's kind of the samealso according to countertop
specialty.com It's the samereasons as vinegar. You
shouldn't use it all the time onyour stone countertops. So
that's the other thing solike the moral of the story is

(22:58):
just get rid of your stonecountertops. You weirdos I think
so. That could be minor. I don'tlike mine. To be honest, that
sounds so bougie. But I justwon't get into my house later.
But that's I mean minor, minor, basically, bathroom tile they
have like, its tiles. So likewhen you clean up crumbs just

(23:19):
gets stuck in the ground. Likeit's never clean and it's black.
So it's like okay, oh, Lord.
Yeah, I need a coffee. At leastyou can't see the coffee.
There you go. Yeah, that's theone thing about mine. It's very
patterned. It's just this lady.
We bought our house from thislady who she just thought she
was a fixer upper. And sheseriously wasn't it Oh,
frustrating. So she sucks. Butanyway. Okay. So yeah, moral of

(23:41):
the story. I wanted something Icould use for everything. And I
was so annoyed about like, looking around for what the hell
can I use? Because I just, Iwant simplicity. I don't want to
have to use 5000 differentproducts for all of the
different needs. So it'smultipurpose people. And I also
don't want it to kill me. Socould call print also putting

(24:03):
that on my Bumble profile. Also, please don't kill me.
Oh, God. So I lived in a way itwas true crime.
I know. I know. I'm like don'tgo on dates ever.
Yeah. Okay. We're all safe.
We're all fine. Okay, so Idiscovered castile soap, as I
mentioned. So we had owned abottle of Castile soap for years

(24:26):
because we use it for campingand like washing camp dishes and
shampooing and stuff while wewere camping, but we never use
it for anything else ever. Andwe have this huge bottle because
they come in very big bottles.
You can get small ones too ifyou just want to try it out, but
I mean, why would you do that?
By bulk? Yeah,so what is it? What the heck is
castile soap? According to thekitchen? It's named after the

(24:50):
olive oil based soapsoriginating in Castile Spain.
Yes, because soap is is madefrom fat. Right? Which,
which? Yeah, which people don'tknow. Like, it's weird to think
about. Yeah, lie, right?
Yes. So castile soap comes inliquid or bar form. I've used

(25:11):
the liquid one, but Dr.
Bronner's is the most popularone. IV for sure you do. Yeah.
Yeah. So you have Dr. Bronner's?
I have used Dr. Bronner's in thepast. Yes. I've been known to
det dilly dally a little bitaround the Dr. Bronner's fire to
dabble with a bit. Mostly justbecause it's something to read
in the shower. For real, though,I was I literally just wrote

(25:33):
it's a big bottle with 1000words on it.
Yeah. It's got its own religion.
Like really? Yeah. Andthat's why I was like, because
people love this shit. And I waslike, is it actually good? Cult?
Yeah. Is it a cult? And is it acult around something good,
because if it's a cult aroundsomething good, that's okay,
fine, fine. Cults call him good.
Things are good, right? Yes.

(25:55):
So it's made from oils likecoconut, olive oil, hemp oil,
but they also sometimes useavocado oil, almond oil and
walnut oil. So it's all vegan.
Okay, which some soaps aren'tthey use animal fat?
Yeah, you gotta check on that.
Yeah. Interestingly, it wascreated in 1948. So it's been

(26:15):
around for forever.
Yeah, I was like, Oh, it must bein the 70s. No. Yeah, I think 48
isn't interesting. So in thesame kitchen, from the kitchen,
they say that it registers atabout 8.9 on the pH scale. So
it's the same level as likebaking soda. And it's slightly
more alkaline than mild dishsoap. Okay, so it's like pretty

(26:39):
mild, actually.
I mean, like water is a seven.
Right? And that's neutral. So,yeah, there you go. So I didn't
know that.
I'm learning high schoolchemistry coming back to me.
Nice. Well, at least one of usknows. So.
I'm gonna I'm looking it upright now. To make sure Okay,
yeah. So the highest it goes is14. So an eight. An egg is about

(27:05):
where castile soap is. Eight.
Yeah, Baking soda is about anine and hence up to 10.
Okay, yeah, this is 8.9. Soalmost like baking soda, but, so
it's great for cleaning greasysurfaces, so it's perfect for a
kitchen and Dr. Bronner'swebsite markets and the bottles
markets itself as useful for 18things. These are right, hold

(27:28):
your britches, washing yourface, body, hands and hair for
bathing, shaving, brushing yourteeth, rinsing fruit,
aromatherapy, okay. Washingdishes by hand, doing laundry,
mopping floors, all purposecleaning, washing windows,
scrubbing toilets, washing dogs, controlling, controlling dust
mites, ants, and aphids. Therecipe for all purpose cleaner

(27:53):
made with Castile soap from thekitchen, which is also the one I
use is one tablespoon castilesoap in one spray bottle of
water. That's it, and then youuse it.
And then you still got thatgiant bottle in the shower to
wash your dog.
Wash your dog. Wash your kidswatch your wife. No, wait. It's
different. Yes. But the bigquestion is, is it

(28:15):
antibacterial? Okay, right,because that's what we're
talking about with you. Does itdisinfect? Yeah, but yeah, I'm
saying antibacterial because fora reason, okay. Because I'm
using a study and I yeah,there's like a difference
between viruses and bad. Yes,bacteria and viruses for sure.
And I want to make sure I'mquoting things right. So let's

(28:35):
be precise, precise. Okay, Ihave the peppermint, castile
soap from Dr. Bronner's becausethey have a bunch of different
scents. Everyone, and I mean, everyone who's even remotely
interested in sustainability andwriting about it online claims
that peppermint hasantibacterial properties. Have

(28:55):
you ever heard ofa? Yeah, I feel like I have, but
mostly from like, my friends whowere trying to sell me doTERRA.
Okay. Okay, well, it'severywhere.
Yeah, it's part of why we use itfor toothpaste, right?
Yeah, I think it just smellslike there's something about it
that just lets us think clean.
Yeah, but according to theNational Library of Medicine,

(29:16):
data done. Peppermint EssentialOil has a weak antibacterial
activity.
Curses. Okay, clean, okay.
Yes. However, I didn't have awhole ton of time. So I'm trying
to get this right. So as far asantibacterial peppermints not

(29:38):
going to get to there very well, but they've noticed antiviral
activity with peppermint butwith a big bu TT lavender. Okay,
so after I read this thing aboutpeppermint, I was like, Oh my
God. We were reading aboutessential oils. Not quite to

(29:58):
that extent. But you know, I waslike, Like, Oh man, maybe this
is annoying because I'm usingpeppermint for my all purpose
cleaner. And I'm thinking likeI've even said to Joe before,
like this is definitelydisinfected. Right so apparently
not that great about it. Butlavender is apparently active
against E. Coli. The Yes, thebacteria that causes dysentery,

(30:24):
clinical strains of bacteria, including a bunch of strains
that are resistant toantibiotics.
Okay, how I don't know hashtagscience.
And this is essential oils likethey were specifically looking
at lavender essentialnot even just like the plant
itself. Like if you chew it upand spit it onto the counter.
Long story short, we're going todo a bonus episode on it. Yeah,

(30:46):
we have to where we're probablygoing to eat our words. And
yeah, there we go. And that'sokay.
So Dr. Bronner's has a lavenderone a eucalyptus one a citrus

(31:09):
one and unscented one basicallyanything you can think of.
So do they use essential is theingredient, it's essential oils,
and not like lavender scentedstuff, you know, like they're
not using? Yeah, it's and so Idid find a really cool study
from these five University ofVermont students. They did a
sustainability assessment of Dr.

(31:30):
Bronner's and I was like, Thankyou,
because I don't want to know,yeah,
they actually went through eachingredient that they use in
their products. And they calledYeah, and they sort of studied
how sustainable and non toxicall these things were. Okay, so
what I remember about lavenderis Dr. Bronner's created their

(31:53):
own lavender strain, I think, and it's got its own name, like
lebenden or something. Oh, wow.
And I think they do make anessential oil out of it, because
you would have to, I mean, inliquid form anyway, to mix it,
you'd have to turn it into anoil. Right? So yeah, so they're,
that's what they're using. isn'tinteresting. That's it? Yeah. It
blew my frickin mind. Yeah. Didyou crap your pants?

(32:19):
Oh, I have to go get thelavender soap for my undies. And
my chair not putting that in mydating profile. Yeah, that I
want that. That one can staybetween us chickens. Okay.
Yeah, so so that was wild. Allright. Wow. Okay, so does it

(32:42):
work real quick? Yes, it works.
I mean, we use it on our granitecountertops or stovetop or
wooden dining table.
And it doesn't eat them becauseit's an oil I mean to hardwood
floors to I assume would be finewith it because it's cool
spaced.
And that's what Bob Vila says touse on your he recommends using
it on your wood floors, becauseit's safe. All hell above you.

(33:03):
Yeah. Babila he knows what's up.
He's a superhero. Do peopleknow? Like, do people younger
than 35 know who Bobby livesare gonna have to post this old
house episodes for? Yes, I'msure they do. He's like who Tim
the tool man was based off of Ithink.
I think so. I actually think hewas on Home Improvement a couple
of times. Yeah, it was It wasn'teither. He was
supposed to be intense hero orsomething. Yeah. Or the

(33:25):
Nemesis. That was a joke. Yeah, yes. Yeah, that was funny. So
yeah, I've been using it foralmost a year and I use it on
everything and it works great.
And then the EW G theEnvironmental Working Group
gives every Dr. Bronner'sproduct a grade of an A. Okay,
which is great, except foralmond and Rose. Because of I
think because of the scents.

(33:47):
Yeah, but those get to be sothey're also great. Oh, good.
Yeah. Yeah. Okay, so onto thestudy. So like I said, they
looked at everything, everythingthat goes into Dr. Bronner's,
and it was so funny reading thisbecause it was they clearly were
just enamored with this company.
And they're like, We love thatthey fell into the cult,
and they totally did, but it'sfor good reason. Because they

(34:08):
said they reached out to themand then another company, and I
think the other one was callednature's gate, but don't quote
me on that. And the nature'sgate were being really hard to
work with. And then Dr.
Bronner's this is what they saidDr. Bronner's, quote, has no
issue eliciting product andbusiness information, which
allows the public a fulltransparent view into their
practices.

(34:28):
And that's one reason theEnvironmental Working Group
approves of companies to is whenthey're open about things make
sense. Find the information outYeah, so Wow. Oh, God, I love
them now, too.
I know this halt.
I know. I was so skeptical andthen I'm just like, dang it.
Okay, love them. I'm glad thoughbecause it may be using it but I

(34:49):
could just go on and on. But Dr.
Bronner's converted a bunch ofcoconut oil or coconut farms
into organic farms in Sri SriLanka, and that's where they get
all of their coconut oil. Fromthe organic olive oil that they
use comes from a Palestinianowned company called Kinane,
Fairtrade, and it operates outof West Bank so it's like, owned
by Palestinians while runningout of Palestine. Don't tell

(35:13):
the Texas legislation Well,yeah.
No comment. Hemp Oil is moresustainable than many other
crops. It's produced in Canadalower water as we went through.
Yeah. Okay. Another goodthing about this company about
Dr. Bronner's is they'repackaged in 100%, postconsumer
recycled cylinder bottles andpaper labels.

(35:38):
100 you that that is I mean, that's impressive. Yeah, most
placesare like 90% maximum. Yeah,
they're also three times moreconcentrated than other soaps.
So that means you can use it formuch longer,
so you're not using it for justyou're not paying for the water
to store water.
Exactly. So easy answer is yeah,it's pretty damn good. So this

(36:01):
is alove letter to Dr. Bronner's all
it really is. It's so funny. Iwasn't
sure but how it turned out. Oh,wait, this is where you're going
to shoot your pants. So. Oh, no.
You already did that stupid.
Give it Dr. Bronner's. Ready.
lavender scented.
Lavender please. Okay, is itcheaper? Okay, all right. This

(36:24):
is where it gets wild. Thingsare getting wild. This Bruce's
favorite all purpose cleaner. Isthis is a funny name. Mr. Clean
all purpose cleaner. clean freakmist. doesn't just kind of scare
you.
Yeah, you're like how many namesdoes it need? It needs like for
subtitles? Yes sir. Clean. Mr.
Clean Jr. MFA. Clean spraysqueaky clean non BPA.

(36:49):
Yeah, fresh scent.
Yeah. clean freak mist scaresme. I don't like it. So this is
what the one that this Brucesays works the best but it is
actually safer choice rated bythe EPA, which is so interesting
because it sounds very unsafe.
So currently, it costs about 650per bottle on Amazon. And you
can get it for about six bucksin at Walmart. But I just use

(37:13):
the Amazon to make my lifeeasier back alley.
Were here like freakness. Yeah, the black market, you
can get it for maybe six bucks.
So you can save a nickel. Butyeah, a large 32 ounce Dr.
Bronner, Bronner's bottle of anycent or whatever you call it is
5099 at Target. So,and that's one dash that you're

(37:35):
putting into a 30. Exactly.
Bottle or six hands. Okay, exactly. So it's
32. I did the math, the 32 ouncebottle, 16 bucks, but you need
one tablespoon. This is forthird of an ounce. We're talking
about all purpose cleaner, right? Yeah. So you need a
tablespoon per bottle. AndGoogle tells me that that means

(37:58):
it's 64 tablespoons per bottle.
I think I'm getting Yes, it'smore, but I'll go with Google.
So basically, one Dr. Bronner'sbottle will give you 64 Full
spray bottles of all purposecleaner.
And how much does that come outto a bottle? And that
comes out to if you bought 64Full spray bottles of the clean

(38:20):
freak missed, you would bespending $416 So that's a $400
savings. Holy shit sticks.
Sorry, I'm just in awe. I'm likestaring at my ceiling. Like,
what am I doing with my life?
It's like buying anythingcleaner at all. When I could be
using Dr. Bronner's that onebottle that my roommate just

(38:43):
kept in the shower.
Yes, and it lasts for freakingever. I've had to use it. Well,
yeah. But I'm saying it doesn'tgo bad as far as I know.
I mean, so it's oil. It can gorancid welfare. Mine has and
I've had it for five years.
Yeah, soaps can go rancid. Butif you keep it in a cool dark
place, you probably okay, well,so Okay, another question then.

(39:04):
So for our laundry detergentrecipe, spoiler alert, Episode
Four. Could you use it becausethey say you could use it for
dish soap? Right. Could you justuse a tablespoon of Dr.
Bronner's with your washingsoda?
I wonder. I don't know.
Laundry days, because I wouldlike the the lavender scent.

(39:25):
Yeah. Because it you just needit right? A surfactant like a
soap. Right? That was what youdid.
Surfactant. There was also likean alkali involved,
which was Washington. Yeah,Washington was the alkali and
maybe detergent detergent wasthe other thing but you didn't
necessarily have to havedetergent if you didn't have
heavy stains and stuff.

(39:45):
II. Oh, yeah. And then enzymeswere another thing but that's
all said Oh, but yeah, that wasmaybe actually we could try it.
Just we could do a test test runis why? So this is why this
episode is so goddamn longbecause why?
didn't even notice we've justbeen chatting.
I know. But yeah, there's justso much it's so it's so
interesting. So I figured weshould put in like a TLDR too

(40:08):
long didn't read. Yeah election.
Yeah, for sure. And then we needto do granola ranking. Do that
right? Yeah,I'm gonna include that in with
our granola raking. So TLDR toolong didn't read us one. If
you're looking for an allpurpose cleaner, here's what you
gotta do. You're gonna put onetablespoon of Castile soap in a
used bottle full of water andcall it a day. And then you can

(40:31):
add some time or thyme essentialoil or just time whatever you
want. Or use the lavender onefrom Dr. Bronner's for better
disinfecting and then wash yourcar wash your dog wash floors.
Every episode we rate eachproduct, one to five granolas
one is soggy. Five is break yourtooth off, so they go

(41:00):
soggy is useless. Yeah, whobreaks your tooth off? Yeah,
nobody wants soggy granolanobody wants That's disgusting.
So yeah, you want you want yourteeth to be chipped by the time
you're finished with the episodeso we
are your pants to be pooped.
That's our new writing. PoopyPants. Oh my god, did you shut

(41:20):
your pants?
I love the past it's your pantsto be pooped.
Set MFA at workin passive or passive DNS. Okay,
so my reading for this and thisis specifically the Castile

(41:41):
soap. All Purpose Cleaner isbreak which itself?
Yeah, we should have a littleno drumroll. It's gotta be it's
just so everything about it iseffective.
Inexpensive. eco friendly. Yes.
The three E's. Yes. I justcoined the three E's that's a

(42:03):
new way expensive. You mean?
Affective? Oh, you're rightinexpensive. Just put it below
the i n inthe two E's and and I bought
reflectiveand expensive. An eco friendly.

(42:25):
eco friendly or eco friendlyare? Yeah, because they're not
always. And also eco friendly isnothing. Right? It's green heavy
greenery. Okay, so that's that.
Awesome. Like my pants have beenchat. I really I'm just gonna go
ahead Dr. Bronner's to cart andthrow away every other cleaning
product I own is kind of a no,I'm like, considering that too.

(42:47):
And I need a dog wash dog wash.
Shampoo, and I'm not gonna buyit. Now. I'm just gonna use
this.
I used to I used to use Dr.
Bronner's. Let's it's so funny,because I like the lavender
scent, I used to use the bottle, and I would just have it in the
shower. And I would wash my dogand I would wash myself. But now
I'm just gonna put it on in thesink, too.

(43:09):
Alright, so what's going on nextweek.
So next week we're having toTiffany's in a row. She's going
to do homemade dishwashingdetergent next week, and then we
are going to finish the seasonseason one, episode 12. Will we
eat our words about essentialoils? I hope so. Yeah, me too.
Why not? That would be so funny.
We start the season off likefrickin essential oils. And then

(43:32):
we're like, go buy all of them.
Oh, my God.
Next week is going to be reallycool to believe it or not. I'm
really excited about DIYdishwashing detergent because it
sounds like something that youcannot do. So I'm going to
experiment and report back.

(43:54):
Okay, I want to know cuz I amtired of buying the pods are
using cascade Squirt. Squirt,Squirt. Squirt squirts. If you
