(00:09):
Hi Cat like this.
How's it going?
Pretty good.
This is a mini episode so Iguess we aren't we're not going
to banter very much to start.
This one is our first miniepisode.
It is our first mini episode.
Yeah, I decided to throwsomething quick in for people
who don't have time to listen tothe full ones yet, but want some
(00:29):
quick tips on being a little bitmore eco friendly.
Awesome. So yeah, that's thename of our game. We are
greening up my act. We come upwith products, services or ideas
on how to make your life greenerand more sustainable. Cutting
through all of the marketinggreen hooey that's out there and
finding what really works isreally sustainable and is
(00:53):
affordable.
Yeah, and we are marketingwriters. So we understand what
people use marketing fluff. Soyeah, today I wanted to chat
about something I am like, oddlypassionate about, which is
reusing jars.
Yes. This is huge. So I want toplug our recent recycling
(01:15):
episode was on glass recycling.
So if you go back and listen tothat, but this is something that
we thought was worth pulling outbecause beyond recycling glass,
you can reuse glass jars that soyes.
Yeah. In your takeaway was thatlike, yeah, you can recycle and
recycling glass is good, butreusing it is even better. So.
(01:37):
Exactly. But it's funny becauseI I was always like, I feel like
companies don't make it easy forus. I don't know if you feel
this way. But yeah, gettingthose freakin labels off are is
a pain in the ass a lot of thetime. And yeah, just finding a
good jar that's worth saving.
And all of the things I was justalways like, and also the smell.
(01:59):
I don't know if you havestruggles with like, salsa,
there's still smells like salsa, eight months later.
I have to admit, I have a newdishwasher. So it does wonders.
Oh, that's Sorry to make youjealous? Because I know you
don't. But yeah, my Didyou know that mine is old. So
yeah, yeah. So for anybody whohas an old lady dishwasher, I
(02:21):
have solutions for all of thesethings. So first off, a good way
to reuse to incentivize yourselfto reuse jars is to find good
ones. So yes, knowing whatcompanies make you put their
stuff in decent jars is helpful.
(02:42):
And I have two good examples youmight know of other good ones
actually have three but okay. SoGreen Mountain gringo salsa is
it's in our grocery store. Soit's really easy to find, but
they use actual I don't know ifit's mason jars or if it's
another type of jar like that, but it's like a really legit jar
that you would probably go outand buy a 10 pack for dollars.
(03:06):
Yeah, really good. Their lids.
Their lids are really good if Iremember correctly, and the
sauce is delicious. It's myfavorite salsa by far, as far as
like, you know your jarredvarieties. Right. And then
classico pasta sauce. I actuallydon't Oh, yes. Okay, I don't buy
that much pasta sauce. Butyeah, it's a great it's like a
(03:29):
perfect size. It fits in yourhand. It's kind of square. Yes,
you can fit so much in it, too.
It's big. Yes. And the lids aregood.
Yeah, exactly. The lids are madeof metal. So and the other one I
like is the bone Mamasan Yes,jelly jars, which is like the
classic red and white checkeredJulie wrench. Yes, yes. And so
(03:54):
good to just the best. And Iused to collect, I got into this
habit of collecting mini onesbecause our local bakery every
time I would get a croissant, Iwould have a mini jar with some
jam in it. And it would lastprobably like three or four
times, but I would alwayscollect them. And Joe got so
annoyed at me after a while.
He's like, What are you gonnause these for? And I did
(04:14):
finally, you know, I did find alot of purposes for them, but
not all.
Yeah, that's fair. Those aregreat jars. Yeah. Excellent
choices.
Yeah. So it's kind of like, payattention to your jars is a
really good way to know. Well, Imean, the product has to be
good. First off, butdon't just buy it for the jars.
tossing out salsa to use thethrow in the trash and just
(04:35):
reuse it. Yep. And another thingabout Green Mountain gringo is
that they have labels that justpeel off really easy. Yeah, it's
glorious. Okay, so if you wantto reuse them, there are lots of
I'm sure you have plenty ofsuggestions, but there are a lot
of ways to reuse them. So youcould store all sorts of food so
(04:58):
where I mean yeah, soups, forsure. That's the number one
thing is just use it for foodstorage.
Yes, it's like plastic. Yeah.
Leftover egg whites from abaking recipe. I wrote down a
bright herb storage which is thething I just tried with my
parsley and it is no joke lastedthree weeks.
(05:18):
Do you put it out with a littlebit of water in the bottom? And
then just Yeah, well I filled it to make sure
that it was touching the waterand then put a baggie over it.
And yeah, it's like three weekslater it's still going strong.
So jars can do wonders withthat. Ice also store like rice
and beans like dry foods andthen a ton of stuff for my kid
(05:38):
just like beads or god knowswhat little fruity things. I
store all that type of thing.
Yeah, anythingthat comes in a bag that you'd
have to use a clip to resealjust put it in a jar. Right?
You're airtight it keeps it fromgoing stale. Yeah, and a little
goldfish crackers or cerealeven.
(06:00):
Ya know if your jar is bigenough or you don't have that
much.
Yeah. And it takes up less roomin your and you can see clearly
how much is in it because it's aclear jar. Mm hmm. Brilliant.
Yeah, you're probably going tohear Charlie's crying in the
background. Oh, speech. Shejust heard goldfish crackers and
she needs toagree. It's been a rough night.
That's fine. So I also storelike sewing supplies, like
(06:24):
seeds. If you're if you haveleftover seeds from that you're
planting. You can also makegifts and put homemade gifts in
them or use them outdoors forcandles.
Yes, you could do makeup as wellif you make your own lip balms
with those little mini Jarmo youcan make your candles again
(06:48):
that's if you make candles.
That's one way to do it. Again.
You can't recycle a jar afteryou put a candle in it just
because the oils so you can'twash it. It depends. I mean if
you can, I don't know if youwant to put wax down the drain.
I mean if you can scrape the waxout it's just usually candles
have oils in them that make themyou know we're talking about
essential oils are really hard.
You can't recycle a jar that'shad essential oils and
(07:10):
right yeah, it's probably thesame idea that
I saved my spice jars. The glassones that the plastic ones
unfortunately I tried to buyhnbr locally to be in Central
Market have glass spice jars. Soyou can if you buy like a baggie
of spice like in bulk, I like tobuy like my cinnamon and stuff
in bulk and just go refill thejar. Yes, or I make for
(07:34):
Christmas or holidays. A spicemix and give that out. You know,
that was my holiday gift lastyear. I don't know how excited
people were but I made a goldenmilk spice which is just I
bought a bunch of Tumericcinnamon, I put red chili
instead of pepper, and a littlebit of salt and like nutmeg and
stuff. And then you just addlike a you know, shake it up.
(07:55):
Add a teaspoon of that to moremilk and some honey and you've
got a really nice spicy drinkfor the winter that has no
caffeine and reduces yourinflammation levels. So
that's awesome. Yeah, that's areally good gift.
Yeah, I love it. I don't thinkanyone used it. Everyone's like,
what is the receiver?
(08:15):
Yeah, we all want to be turmericmilk drinking people. And it's
like you forget i i only have itonce a week. I'm like, oh, I
should have I should have goldenmilk tonight. And then I
remember but yeah, absolutely.
I've never even tried it. Yeah.
But yeah, herbs, you know, ifyou want to make an herb mix or
a spice mix, yeah, there'sthere's all kinds of things you
can do with.
(08:37):
Yeah, I do the same thing withspices. I will say it is so much
cheaper. Bulk spice. Yes. Yes. Ican't even tell you how many
times I've gone in to buy aspice and it doesn't weigh
anything. So they just hand itto me for free. Yeah, it's
something that would have costme otherwise like five to $10.
Yeah. They're like I'mshowing up so
(09:01):
yeah, I guess we one timeordered. It was a little Thai
chilies for we were making likekung pao chicken, I think. And
we ordered our groceries at thetime through Instacart. And they
couldn't do less than a quarterof a pound. Sweet a quarter
pound of Thai chilies which isbasically a soccer ball. Or a
(09:21):
rugby ball. It lasted we gavethose away for sure. For like
Merry Christmas, everyone. Youget Thai chili, because we
needed to two little ones thatwe had a quarter pound anyway.
So that's hilarious. Yeah. If wehad just gone to the store, they
would have been like whatever.
Right?
Yeah. Well, they don't maybeprobably wouldn't sell that. But
yeah, but yeah, it's it isamazing. I've gotten like free
(09:45):
or almost free cinnamon sticks.
And yeah, if youonly need two or three and you
buy them from the bulk aisle.
Yeah. Yeah, there's so muchcheaper
for sure. It feels like I'mrobbing the store. But
McCormick and chick are nothappy about Right
Shokri Okay, so if you want toknow how to get the smell out, I
(10:07):
found, well, I found a trick, but also Nancy kind of told me,
so we'd like to talk a lot aboutNancy birtwhistle. She's the
winner, one of the winners ofthe Great British Bake Off, and
she she has a really awesomeInstagram account and a bunch of
books about green living. Sothis is her recipe. I think I
(10:29):
had just done this before, and Igot it from somewhere else, but
she says us, okay, well, this ismy adaptation. Okay. My child
screaming. No, I can hear it.
Okay, good. This is myadaptation. Take like one
teaspoon ish of baking soda, oneteaspoon ish of vinegar, which I
never measure. I just throwsplash. Yeah, put the lid on,
shake it around for 30 seconds, and then wash it and the smell
(10:53):
is probably going to be gone.
Yeah. And you'll be amazed howwell it works if you haven't
tried this, because I was alwayslike, I would love to save this
pickle jar. And yet it smellslike pickles. And then I use
that. And I was like, Whoa, itsmells like. Yeah. And I've used
(11:13):
it on salsa jars on pasta sauce.
But she does have Nancy says ifthere's a stubborn smell that
won't go away, you can make apaste from a sprinkle of water
in baking soda and spread itaround inside the jar. Leave it
for 15 minutes, minutes and thenwash and then the smell is gone.
It's just like when you putbaking soda in your fridge. It
(11:35):
absorbs smells. Yeah.
Or in your laundry or whatever.
And you can do the same on yourlids if your lid is the culprit
of the smell. Yeah. Have youever tried this before?
I have never had a problem withsmells in my jars.
Oh yeah. Cuz you have this fancydish. Dishwasher.
Or I just don't sniff jarsbefore I just randomly throw my
brown rice in them. But yeah,no, that's that's kind of
(11:56):
interesting that the dishwasherworks though. It's good.
My magic dishwasher. Yes. Butbefore you put in the
dishwasher, have you ever put ajar in with a label on it still
in the dishwasher? Yeah, it getseverywhere.
Yeah, that's what the you got toclean your filter out, ladies
and gentlemen. Right.
(12:16):
Yeah,I've had paper just stuck to
every Yeah, just and it's stuckto every glass in there. Yeah,
you justso the next three weeks? Yeah.
So you have to remove theselabels, which can like I said,
be a pain in the ass if they'renot Green Mountain Gringo, which
failed to the Lord's becausethey're, I feel like companies
need to be doing this to make iteasier for us to reuse stuff.
(12:37):
But I don't know. There's justnot the pressure for
it. Yeah, I mean, because ourglass recycling in the United
States is so overwhelminglyGreat. Haha. Oh, I was like
really? No, I that's whatthey're trying to sell us.
Right, right. Yeah.
Yeah, it's frustrating. But ifyou don't want to use like
(13:00):
Google on, which I actually haveGoogle on and I have learned
that it's kind of terrible.
Yeah. Beware the Google on.
Yeah, I don'tknow what exactly, but just not
great. So I tried. This is, Ithink this is also from Nancy's
book, but I tried cooking oiland baking soda. Just scrub
like, spread the cooking oil allover the jar or all over the
(13:23):
label whatever's residue, andthen scrub some baking soda on
top of that and let it sit for afew minutes. And then if you use
a soft cloth, or scrape it offwith a plastic scraper, then it
should come off. And I did thisand I did this for one that
wasn't super intense. Like itwas minor, but it did work.
(13:49):
Because ball oil dissolves glue.
So that makes sense. Yeah, andhaving a mild abrasive. It's
just like, oh, when you thinkabout it like the Yes. Yeah.
Thanks.
Funny. Yeah. Yeah. And then ifyou just, I mean, you'll have to
wash the oil off, obviously. Butthen the end, you might need a
little bit of elbow grease. Butlet's be honest, you have to use
elbow grease with those off too.
Yeah, exactly. Yeah. So yeah.
(14:15):
And then you have a jar that'sready to be used. So that's all
I have for this one. But I hopethat some of that is useful for
folks.
Yeah, I hope that inspirespeople. That's great.
It's really fun, actually. Andyou'll find probably that you
have too many jars.
Yeah, I mean, we have I know wehave a hoarding problem. But
(14:36):
right.
Oh, and one other thing you canactually buy if you have jars,
most of them are pretty standardsize. Not all of them but a lot
of them are. You can buy if yourlid start going to pot, you can
buy canning lids for regularmason jars and they fit on a lot
of jars that you bought from thestore. So I did that to a great
(14:57):
hack. Yeah, because some of themare small. earned some are
bigger so you can size themcorrectly.
Awesome. Well, thank you forthat. That's really good tips.
I'm really I'm inspired toorganize my pantry.
Right? Yeah. And it doesn't haveto be Instagram worthy. They
don't have to be the same stupidjar. You don't have to go to
Walmart and buy 100 of themall of the coffee in my cabinet
(15:18):
that's in bagsand jars right now. Right now.
We have a coffee, coffeehoarding and glass hoarding
problem and this. Just marry thetwo.
Exactly. They work welltogether.
Perfect. All righty. Well, thankyou. Yeah. We'll try to also try
(15:39):
to take a picture and put thaton Instagram for everyone. So
follow us on Instagram. If youdon't we are at greening up my
act.
Yes. Thank you so much forlistening. Yeah, we'll
talk to you soon. Bye.
