Speaker 1 (00:00):
Oh yeah, yeah, what is going on, everybody. It's Matt
(00:21):
Wilson of the Grilledes podcast and this is Grilled Doess
podcast presents just the beers. That's right. In this show,
we focus on just the beers. Every episode we will
cover two different beers from anywhere in the country. Now,
if you listened to the Grill This podcast, we primarily
focus on beers that are in the New York state
(00:43):
area because that's where we are, and the festivals that
we go to are in the state, and so on
and so forth. But on this show we showcase beers
from all over the country. And I'm the host of
this show. So if you want to hear me and
Jim clown around and also talk about the delicious foods
and different grilling stuff, you want to listen to The
Grill This Podcast, which we still will be We still
(01:04):
will be doing full episodes of the Grill This Podcast,
but for this slot, I guess we call it a
side series. It's just me talking beers, that's all. That's
always what we do. It's quicker, it's a very quick
I try to keep it under thirty minutes. So these
are quicker episodes where we just discuss beers. But again,
I still want you to make sure that you check
(01:25):
out the Grill This podcast. I still love doing what
we do on that show. We eat very well, we
drink very well. We talk to a lot of great folks,
a lot of craft brewers, a lot of vendors, everybody,
and we still are making brand new episodes of the
grillss podcast. So don't stop listening to the grillss podcast.
You listen to both. I'm trying to give you an
extra a bonus show if you will in the podcast.
(01:47):
So continue listening to the Grill This Podcast with Jim
Salmon and myself, And now you have something else to
listen to in the meantime. In the meantime when you're
waiting for us to make new episodes of the Gridllless podcast,
now you have Gridles's podcast presents Just the Beers. And
this is episode number two. All right, before we get
into the doers, we got some I guess, some interesting
(02:08):
things to talk about that I want to mention real quick,
and then we'll get into the beers. So, as I
discussed before, all into this podcast, we do a lot
with the food as well, and I love food. I
love to cook. Jim's also loves food and loves to cook.
We love doing that and I always like trying new
and different things. And one thing that I do like,
(02:29):
especially in the colder months, is soup. Right. I like
a thick, hearty soup. I don't like those watery soups
unless you're doing like a ramen. That's fine, but what's
in the ramen is hardy anyway, So it doesn't matter
if if the soup, the soup, or the broth is watery.
But I like a creamy, hardy, thick soup. And uh,
Progresso is actually coming up with a different way to
(02:52):
enjoy the soup. So they've released its first ever limited
edition soup Drops candy on Let's Pass Thursday. So Progresso
says it took the beloved favors the beloved flavors of
Progresso chicken noodle soup and packed him into a fun,
savory candy. So it's sold exclusively on Progressive's website, Progresso
(03:15):
soup drops dot com. They sell it for two dollars
and forty nine cents per can. The first batch is
already sold out, but they're gonna release another one every
Thursday at nine am in the month of January, so
not much time left in this month, but you can
buy some every Thursday at nine am. They're going to
(03:36):
release that can. That's Eastern standytime. I don't know about that, man.
I love soup, and especially if I'm not feeling well,
chicken noodle soup is definitely might go to. But I
don't know if I want a chicken noodle soup candy.
That just sounds weird, but what I try it? Yeah,
in fact, perhaps we'll order something and give it a shot.
I don't know. But if you think that you're interested
(03:58):
in that, yeah, go ahead and go to progressosoup drops
dot com and get yourself a can of candy chicken
flavored chicken noodle flavored soup. Yeah. Again, just saying that
that sounds kind of just just off, but whatever, it
is what it is, all right. So if you have
ever met me in person, you know that I am
(04:20):
not what you consider a felt person. I'm a pretty
big dude, right Yeah, and I'm not afraid to mention that. Hey, listen,
you know that the food is good when the big
dude says it's good or the big dude's cooking it.
Because he's gonna put all the flavors and everything. So
I'm happy with being a big dude. But luckily for
people like me, experts are coming up with a new
way to the final BCD so the lancet diabetes and
(04:44):
end your krill analogy. I know, I didn't say that wrong.
Endocrinology Commission wrote in a new paper that body mass
in the next you know you call, everyone calls it BMI.
You go to the doctor and they check your bm
MI to see how fat you are, I guess, And
they finally have admitted that it's not the most accurate
way to measure health at an individual level. Instead, the
(05:04):
Commission is going to approach obesity similar to chronic illnesses.
So they're going to focus on adipacity, which is the
amount of fat store in the body and how it
impacts organizm tissues. So the CDC says about forty percent
of American adults were considered obese between twenty twenty one
and twenty twenty three. But you know, if listen, there
(05:26):
are some folks who play like in the NFL, right,
and also some just bigger dudes who are just muscly
bigger dudes. They're not all fat. Right. Actually, if you
grab their arm, you can feel the muscle. They're heavier
than the recommended BMI right, or the recommended weights that
you're supposed to be But they're fine, they're healthy. They
can run around, they can get up and down off
(05:48):
the ground. So I think that's a great way to
try to measure how obese you are the correct way
and not just say you're a big dude, say you're fat.
I mean, listen, I no, I am, and I'm working
on it, but damn it. The food is so delicious
and the beers are so delicious. It makes it hard.
But I've cut back. I've actually dropped a few pounds.
(06:09):
I did not do the New Year's resolution thing because
that that never works for me, right, because that feels
gimmicky to me. I have to like just want to
do it, you know what I mean. I can't be like,
all right, it's the January first, it's the official start
of the new year. I must go to the gym
now and diet. I'm gonna fail if I do that,
And that's why so many people fail when they do that.
And there's like I think there's a terminator call, like
(06:31):
to drop out Tuesday, whatever it is. I don't know
what it's called, but there's a thing out there that
actually that they actually call on people who do it
for a couple of weeks and then they quit. Right
So you know when I started, I actually started around Thanksgiving.
Right before Thanksgiving, I started dieting and eating better and
training to be healthy. And that's the toughest time to
do it. That's why I wanted to do it, because
(06:52):
I figured if I can get through the toughest time,
the time I had is going to be much easier.
And like I said, I was actually able. I mean,
I had a couple bad days or whatever I wanted,
but there I've been doing well and I've lost some
weight and we'll see if I can keep it up.
But maybe one day I'll just be a big dude
who's not a fat big dude that will work on that. Though.
I you know, I'm fat and happy right now, but
(07:14):
you know, I guess being healthy for my children and stuff,
that's probably a good idea. Another thing I want to
talk about real quick, so everyone knows about red dye
number three. I think people have been eating that for years,
and it looks like the FDA is going to be
banning red dye number three in food, drinks, and ingested drugs.
This comes after thirty years after scientists found links between
(07:38):
the dye, which is made of petroleum, and cancer in animals.
So red dye number three is additive foods and beverages
to give them that you know, appealing cherry bright color
that you see and it looks nice. But obviously if
it's great to kill you, you probably don't want to
ingest that. So manufacturers that use the additive are being
(07:58):
given two years to remove it and reformulate their products.
Red Dynamit three has been banned in California since October
of twenty twenty three. So California already banned it, I
gainst the rest of us are kind of coming around
to do it as well. I know my daughter actually
has an allergy to that, so she really can't even
have it. But yeah, that color is cool, but there's
(08:19):
no flavor red out to it, just a cool look.
So it's good to take it out, not kill yourself. Listen,
enjoy the foods, man, but you don't need to die
because you want to make it bright and red. Right,
all right, last thing we're going to talk about before
we get to the beers. This Monday coming up is
going to be Martin Luther King Junior Day. And I
know a lot of you folks will have off, you know,
(08:41):
for the holiday. A lot of us will too. I
don't know if you do. You might, but I do.
I work more than one job, so one job I
have it off, the other jobs I don't. But still
it is gonna be Martin Luther King Junior Day. Few
facts about Martin Luther King Junior. He was assassinated in
nineteen sixty eight. The first thing that Martin Luther King
(09:03):
Junior was arrested for was in nineteen fifty six, and
it was speeding. The first time Martin Luther King Junior
was arrested was in nineteen fifty six for speeding. And
I'm not sure if everyone knows, but Martin Luther King
Junior is called doctor mart Luther King Junior because he
has college degrees. The first college Dearie Martin Luther King
(09:24):
Junior received was a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from
Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. So the first book that
Martin Luther King Junior wrote was called Strike to Freedom.
The Montgomery story. And how about this. In November eighteenth,
nineteen sixty four, FBI Director j Edgar Hoover called Martin
(09:47):
Luther Martin Luther King Junior the most notorious liar in
the country. That's right, FBI Director j Edgar Hoover called
Martin Luther King Junior the most glorious liar in the
country on November eighteenth, in nineteen sixty four. Everyone, this
was a This is a priorly fact that most people know.
(10:08):
Doctor Martin Luther King Junior delivered his I Have a
Dream speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D C.
And in Washington, D C. And Martin Luther King Junior
received and also an Alslow Norway the Nobel Peace Prize
in nineteen sixty four, and the satisfact about doctor Martin
(10:29):
Luther King Junior. He delivered his final speech less than
twenty four hours before he was killed. So everyone remember
and honor the late great Dr Martin Luther King Junior.
This coming Monday, enjoy the day off if you have
the if you have the day off, but remember why
you have the day off. All right, that's enough news
(10:51):
and stories and all that stuff. Let's get into why
you actually are listening to this. It's the beers, right,
It's thick beers. Beers are delicious, and I love all
different kinds. I don't really just lean towards one particular
particular style of beer. I love trying them all. So
I got this box that I get from a beer
(11:13):
delivery service and they give me beers from all over
the country, all different styles. I pas, Laggers, sours, stouts, supporters,
Hetha license whatever. I get all types of different beers
sent to me from across the country. There's a lot
(11:33):
of different options that you can use to do that,
but I use a particular brand. I'm not gonna talk
about the brand anymore, you know, because if I'm gonna
talk about you, you gotta hook me up, you know what
I'm saying. But I do do it, and I don't
mind paying for it. But you know, if they want
me to mention on the podcast, run the radio, or anything,
you know, we gotta work them out. We gotta work
(11:53):
something out. I can't, I can't be you know, I got,
I got My free time is just isn't free anymore,
you know what I'm saying. You know what? Okay, anyways,
let's talk about the beers that we have today. The
first beer that we have is from saw Tooth Brewery.
It looks like saw Tooth Brewery. Uh, let me see
where they're located and see if it actually says on
(12:15):
the can here. Usually it does. But I'm getting I've noticed,
and I'm getting older and my eyes are getting worse,
which is bad. But you know, maybe I should start
wearing glasses. But this is canned in Hailey, Idaho. So
this beer comes from Hailey, Idaho. Again, it's saw Tooth Brewery.
(12:36):
The beer that will be sampling today is called Bloody Good.
It's a blood orange wheat, so it's a wheat ale
with blood orange puree, all right, And it looks like
it says this actually has the Vital Ground foundation. On
the can, it says helping helping protect, help and protect
and restore grizzly bear populations by conserving habitat and reducing
(12:59):
conflicts between bears and humans. So I guess this is
actually going to a This thing has a cause that
they try to support as well with their brewery. But
again this is called the saw Tooth Brewery. Bloody Good,
blood Orange Wheat britt Beer ABV four point seven so
this is the kind of beer that you can have
more than just one of. All right, here it is.
(13:21):
This is still my favorite thing to do, even on
this episode or this for this showcase of the just beers.
Here we go. That sounds perfect. All right, let's give
this a taste. I'm a big fan of blood orange.
(13:42):
If you've never had a blood orange before, blood oranges
aren't sweet like regular oranges. Blood oranges have more of
a bitter taste. They're almost almost grapefruit esque, not as
tart as a grapefruit, but they're pretty tart, right, So
they're not you expect that eat orange juice flavor. It's
not quite like that. It's more of a more of
(14:04):
a bitter taste. You can taste that in there. It's
not overwhelming at all. It's just kind of in the back, right,
but it's delicious. It's it's refreshing. It almost it's almost
like a sour, not quite but almost like a sour.
But that blood orange is in there. That flavor is
not I don't want to say intense, but it's there.
(14:24):
Uh this, I know it's We're in the middle of
winter right now. I can see this being more of
a summer style beer. But again, I drink all types
of beer all beer long, so it doesn't really matter
what your style is. I know folks in Jamaica who
drink stouts and it's like, you know, one hundred degrees,
So it doesn't it doesn't matter. Your preference is your preference.
But this is this is a light beer four point
(14:46):
seven AVV. So if you're gonna if you're gonna be
doing one of those things where you're gonna be having
a few, this beer would fit the criteria of having
a few. You don't have to worry about like, oh crap,
I had three and I'm gonna be hammered. You can
probably tolerate, you know, a few more than two. So
that's my thought on this one. Again. It is Sawtooth
(15:07):
Preierry Buddy good Blood orange Wheat out of Idaho. All right,
that's beer number one. Let's get to beer number two.
So it looks like again I'm grabbing these things randomly,
and I grabbed na na a pink limannada. Let's say
(15:28):
sour ale. It says it's tart, tasty and rosa, which
means that I'm thinking probably like a reddish color. This
is from rough Tail Brewing Company. Let's see where rough
Tail Brewing is out of. And again I have to squint,
because I mean, yes, I probably am getting more blind.
(15:52):
But also they make these things so small sometimes and
it's hard, it's hard to see. Okay, here you go,
brewed by Roughtail Brewing Company in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma,
roughtailbeer dot com. So that's where this comes from. And
again it's a pink Limonada sour, which says it has
(16:15):
it has been brewed with lemon, strawberry, and natural flavors.
The ABV on this one. Let me see if I
can find it. The ABV on this one. Some of
these newer ones, man, they don't list the abvs, or
if they do, it's you gotta really look to find it.
(16:35):
I can't see it, Gosh, no, I don't. It's not
listened on the can, so I can't tell you what
the ABV is. You have to look that up, which
you know, if I wasn't lazy, I would have looked
it up myself for you already. But I'm assuming this
is not a very powerful one. But let's give it
a taste. I am definitely curious to see what it
tastes like. So let's go ahead and pop that top,
(16:56):
you know what I mean. Here we go. Oh, I
can smell the strawberry. It comes through very well. I
haven't tasted it yet, but I can smell the strawberry.
Or here we go. M that's actually very good. So
it's sour, but there's a little bit of a sweetness
to it, not overwhelming, like not like one of those
(17:19):
those heavy, thick sour beers, you know what I mean,
the ones that like you have to roll on the
table because it pours like a smoothie. Those tend to
be very sweet. This is not that sweet, but there
is a sweetness to it. There's still more more sour
than sweet, but there's a sweetness to it. That strawberry
is definitely prominent. And you get that lemonade finish in
the back. So I like this too. Again. I reminds
(17:42):
you of being by by some sort of body of water,
having a nice cold one of these and being in
the sun. You know, this is a summertime or daytime. Uh,
you know, have a couple on the beach, you know,
at the tiki bar or whatever. I can see having
more than one, uh of these kind of beers as well.
It tastes it tastes light that doesn't have a very
(18:04):
You don't taste a lot of alcohol in this beer,
so this is an easy drinking beer. I like them
both out of the two I had today, I will
definitely say I like the rough Tail beer better then
the Nota Nana pink Lemonada Salary l. The other one
was good too. I love blood orange, so I would
would I buy these beers again. I would buy both
(18:25):
of them again, but I do. I'm not gonna lie
to you. I do like the Nda Nada pink Limonada
as ridiculous as say over and over, but it's that's
the better one. I like that one a lot, all right.
Don't forget January twenty fifth, the fifth New York Drink
new York dot Com. The New York state Craft Crewis
(18:46):
Association will be in Albany January twenty fifth for the
New York State Craft Crews Association. That festival is always fun.
I may not be able to make it this year.
By other job is sending me around doing other things,
so I may not be lucky enough to be there,
But I really really think it's a great idea for
if you are a lover of craft beer to go
(19:09):
to this festival. The hotel that it's in, which I
cannot think of right the top of my head, is amazing.
It looks like a small little town indoors. The vessel
is indoors, so you don't be worried about freezing outside
while you're drinking, all right, so you'll be nice and
warm and indoors. They have great food vendors that are
around as well, so you can eat good food, and
you get to sample over beers from over fifty different
(19:31):
beer vendors. And like I said before, the majority of
the beer vendors bring two or three different beers for
you to sample, so there's probably over one hundred beers
that you can sample from, which you probably can't sample
them all because you'll die, but there's still such a
great variety. And that's the thing. If you're kind of
new to the craft beer game. These vessels are a
(19:52):
great way to dip your toe in the water because
with all those beers, it's very likely you're going to
find one that you like. So again, think New York
Treatyork dot com to get your tickets. It's the new
York State Craft Brewers Association Festival in Albany. It's the
Hotel Again. I can't think up it at the top
of my head, but it's an amazing, amazing venue. If
(20:13):
you want to learn more about that, go to Thinknew
York Treatnewyork dot com. All right, well again, like I said,
these are not the longer These are not the longer
grilled this podcast that are usually like an hour or
so long. It's just a quick hitter. Get to get
an idea of a couple of beers that you can
try to sample and do, like I do, find a
(20:34):
beer company that can deliver an assortment of craft beers
to you. So if you don't want to go out
and travel all over the place to buy to find
the beers to your life, bring it to your house
man have them deliver it to you. I get a
box at like ten beers every month sent to me
from all over the country, and that makes it easy
for me to try beers from all over the Great
United States of America. All right, it's Matt Wilson. I
(20:56):
am out of here. I'll probably see you next week.
This is just the beers. Oh yeah, do do do
do
