Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome, welcome,
welcome.
I'm excited you're here.
I am actually coming to youfrom Phoenix, arizona, where I'm
doing a little girlcation withone of my BFFs, and we also
recorded a podcast episode,which I don't know if it's going
to be before or after this one,so you'll just have to wait and
see.
But I had a spa day yesterdayand it got me thinking about
(00:26):
rest and how important rest is,particularly for real estate
agents.
I feel like, and know actually, that we are an industry where
people are always on.
There's always showings, clientcalls, late night negotiations,
and if you're running a team, there are agents that are
working on your team.
(00:46):
If you run a brokerage, there'semployees, there's agents on
your team.
There are so many moving partsthat it is natural to be
exhausted sometimes, and that iseven more reason for us to get
some rest.
I also think it's really easyfor us to confuse hustle with
productivity and a lot of timeswe just get into ultra stress,
(01:11):
running on fight or flight mode, and we forget that you can't
run a successful real estatebusiness while you're running on
empty.
And showing up as your bestself for your clients, your
family, your friends, foryourself, is so important to
having a life and a businessthat you absolutely love.
So I am going to introduce youto the seven types of rest that
(01:35):
you need as a human being, andthis is not my original concept.
This comes from Dr SandraDalton-Smith, and she wrote a
book called Sacred Rest, which Itotally recommend reading, but
her framework is so amazing.
It was a game changer for me inunderstanding why I would still
be feeling tired even though Igot a good night's sleep.
(01:57):
And if you are a real estateagent, if you are a parent, you
are going to really resonatewith this episode.
So my hope is, by the end ofthis episode, you will learn the
seven types of rest, how youcan apply them in your life as a
real estate agent, and how youcan stop running on fumes and
start rejuvenating yourself andnot feeling so exhausted.
(02:22):
So let's dive in to the seventypes of rest and how they apply
to real estate agents.
So the first type of rest isphysical rest.
This is rest that rejuvenatesyour body in any form, so it
could be passive or active, andit really is just anything that
makes your physical body feelrested.
(02:45):
So examples could be sleeping, taking naps, maybe even just
like zoning out or meditating.
I also think there's the activeform, so yoga, stretching.
Sometimes people actually thinkworking out is physical rest.
So it really just depends onyou.
What makes your body feelrelaxed.
Why does this matter?
(03:05):
Real estate agents actually havea pretty physical job.
Sometimes it involves being onyour feet a long hours hosting
open houses, running fromshowing the showings, going to
inspections.
I don't know about you, butlike I gave up wearing cute
shoes after like a month in thebusiness, like we're done, I am
walking so much.
(03:26):
There is no not getting mysteps in, like I'm definitely
getting them in.
So if your body is worn out,you absolutely can't be a good
real estate agent.
Like your feet are gonna hurt, you're gonna be miserable.
So how do you get physical restas a real estate agent?
Scheduling downtime, beingintentional about heavy activity
, is really making sure that.
(03:48):
For me personally, getting mymassages, making sure that I am
lying down if I am tired and onmy feet a lot you could also
maybe just do some stretchingafter showings or like if you're
in the car for a long time, itcould be going for a walk and
just getting upright.
I know a lot of people areusing standing desks and that's
become super popular.
(04:09):
So really it's anything that, for you, makes your body feel
rested.
Diving into number two, that ismental rest.
So mental rest is anything thatclears your mind, reduces
mental fatigue, reduces themental load.
So real estate agents have apretty large mental load.
(04:30):
If you think about it.
We're juggling offers,negotiations, clients, deadlines
, and without mental rest youwill feel so scatterbrained and
so stressed.
We've all been there wherewe've had a super long day and
we're like going cross-eyed.
So some strategies to help withmental rest I love me a good
(04:53):
brain dump and if you havelistened to any of my podcast
episodes, you know brain dumpsare my thing.
I do them every Sunday night andit just offloads those thoughts
.
So I love a good brain dump.
I also know some people keep anotebook on their bedside table.
So if anything is keeping themup at night so they can't sit
(05:14):
and they can't sleep, they'rejust like write it down.
And some people use a note, their notes app, and they just
have a running tally ofeverything.
I know I introduced my husbandto this concept and he's like
really into it and I think it'shelped him with his mental rest.
The other thing is just settingboundaries around when you are
on and when you are off.
So this could be do not disturbon your phone.
(05:36):
It could be I'm just notanswering anybody after 7 pm.
Agents who are on all the timeand never let their brain rest
are absolutely settingthemselves up for burnout, if
they aren't burned out already.
So just making sure that youhave a plan and have some
strategies to just let yourbrain stop thinking it's okay to
(05:56):
not think all the time.
Okay, number three is sensoryrest and this just has to do
with your senses, like your, your feeling, your smells, your
hear, hearing, your you'reseeing, like all of those senses
, the five senses.
So I know for me I am a mom ofthree young kids and there is a
concept and I know the parentsout there will know what I'm
(06:18):
talking about of being touchedout, where your senses just
can't take it anymore.
If anyone touches you you aregoing to lose your mind, and
this happens to real estateagents too.
So between your phone going offall the time, like your alerts
being on a computer havingconstant notifications, you are
also probably overstimulated allday and that's just your work
(06:40):
stimuli.
There are personal stimuli thatwe have too, and it can be so
incredibly draining.
So the way that you get somesensory rest is to just escape
your senses for a little while.
So how does that happen for you?
I like to think of I don't knowif you guys know the float tank,
but I like to think of thoselike the Epsom salts float tanks
(07:02):
where you can literally just goin and float and your body's
weightless and there's no noise, there's no light, there's no,
nothing.
That, to me, is the ultimateexample of sensory rest.
You're just literally back inthe womb and just relaxing and
have nothing going on and justrelaxing and have nothing going
(07:22):
on.
So what are some like littleways?
I mean we can't live in a floattank, right, I wish we could.
But what are some ways that youcan get sensory rest?
I know for me I think water isa theme here I love to just take
a bath, close my eyes and justzone out like lock my kids out
of my room and just zonk out fora little bit.
It could be just like puttingin some earbuds and listening to
relaxing nature sounds, itcould be driving with literally
(07:47):
no music on.
So anything you can do to takea step back from that sensor
those senses that stimuli canreally and I do think this is a
big one that we get because weare constantly on and being
pinged at.
The fourth one is creative rest, and this one's a little bit fun
(08:08):
.
So this one is it rechargesyour ability to think creatively
and solve problems.
A lot of times, as real estateagents, we just have our head
down doing the job and wesometimes need to pop up for air
to be inspired.
You sometimes need to getinspiration for our businesses
and like, feel like we're doingsomething creative.
I think that this can be foryour marketing strategies.
(08:32):
It could be for home.
Staging ideas could be problemsolving during negotiations.
If you are dreamed and you don'thave that creative rest, you're
not creatively rested, you'regoing to hit a wall and you're
going to feel stuck.
So I know when I'm like what amI going to do about this deal
that's blowing up A lot of times.
If I just go and take a walk, that really helps me reset my
(08:54):
brain and I can creatively thinkabout the problem?
This can also be things thatjust are inspiring for you.
So maybe it's visiting an artmuseum or maybe it's going for a
really scenic walk.
It could be like painting apicture.
I know, for a stint of time Iloved creative lettering and
that was really relaxing for me.
So it can be art, but itdoesn't have to be art, it's
(09:16):
just anything that reallyrecharges your ability to get
that creative part of your brainflowing again.
The fifth type of rest isemotional rest, and I think this
one hits really hard for realestate agents because this is
your emotional labor.
You're constantly managing theemotions of others and also kind
(09:41):
of like putting your blocker upto try to make sure that those
emotions aren't impacting you.
Our clients are relying on usto be calm and positive and we
express our frustration all thetime.
We can't express if we'reanxious, we can't express if
we're sad or scared, so we'rereally putting on that brave
face to the world whichliterally is exhausting, takes
(10:06):
emotional energy.
So without emotional rest, youare absolutely setting yourself
up to just burn out quickly.
I don't know, for I think realestate agent tends to attract
people who are very empathetic.
So there's a lot of empaths outthere, I think, and when you
are an empathetic person yousometimes take on the emotions
(10:26):
of other people.
So knowing what's yours andwhat's your clients can be a
really important boundary tounderstand and set is that my
client's very upset right now.
They're really angry, butthat's not mine.
I didn't cause them to be upsetor angry.
Sometimes it's really hard tohave that distinction, but I
(10:49):
know once I was able to flexthat muscle and set that
boundary, things became a loteasier for me.
So what are some tips?
To recharge your emotional rest?
Vent to a friend, a coach, atherapist that's so crucial.
You need to have an outlet andI actually recommend this not to
be your partner if you arepartnered, because your partner
(11:12):
can't take on this role for youand still have a healthy
relationship.
I think it's okay to vent tothem sometimes, but I don't
think that you can.
I don't think it's actuallyfair to them to lean on them to
be your emotional rest.
Then schedule time to be aloneI think that that's another
really big one and to decompress, especially if there are high
pressure interactions or highemotionally staked situations,
(11:35):
you need to have that time tokind of like come back to
yourself and really feel yourfeels Like.
It is important to not justignore the feelings.
You have to process them atsome point.
It may not be in the moment, because that's not appropriate,
but we do have to process themat some point.
Number six is your social rest, and we are in a people business.
So if you peopleing with peopledoes not energize you which it
(12:00):
is surprising to a lot of peopleI'm actually an introvert.
I play an extrovert very wellon TV, but I am not an extrovert
, I am an introvert.
Recharging my battery is meansbeing away from humans.
I love humans, but I need to beaway from them to recharge.
So if you are the type ofperson that you need to recharge
your battery by being byyourself, know that about
(12:20):
yourself and build in that time.
If you're the type of personthat gets recharged by being
around people that energize, you, go for that.
So make sure that you'respending time with people that
make you feel supported andenergized.
If that's going to help yourecharge your social rest, or if
you need a break from peoplebecause they leave you feeling
(12:42):
drained, that's fine too.
Whatever you need to do torecharge that social battery is
really, really important, because we are in a people-based
business.
Finally, the last type of restis spiritual rest.
Now, this isn't necessarilybeing religious, although it can
be but this is connecting tosomething bigger than yourself.
(13:03):
It really offers you a sense ofpurpose and belonging.
So when that day-to-day grindof being an agent just starts to
feel overwhelming, this canhelp you reconnect with what
your why is Like.
Why are you in this business?
So I think a lot of people getinto real estate not only to
make money, but they also wantto help people find homes and
(13:24):
create stability.
This is like the American dream, literally, is to be a
homeowner.
So I think we're really helpingpeople make that possible and
there's nothing more rewardingthan helping a first time home
buyer, who maybe has limitedincome or limited assets, buy
their first home and they'rereally starting that journey of
(13:45):
building wealth and I think thatthat's a really powerful why
for some people.
So that can be a way torecharge, spiritual rest, to
really understand the why.
What's the difference you'remaking in the world.
Another way people connect totheir bigger sense of purpose is
volunteering or donating.
So having those causes that arereally important to you and
(14:08):
maybe you're using the money youearn through real estate to
support those causes, that canbe a really impactful way to get
spiritual rest.
Lastly, it could be justpracticing gratitude or your
religion going to church.
I know for me personally, meditation and contemplation is
a huge piece of spiritual restfor me.
(14:29):
I love being able to connectwith my higher self and just
like feeling aligned mind, bodyand soul Like that's a really
impactful way for me to feelspiritually rested.
So whatever that is for you,you need to do it.
So I know that this sounds likea lot of work and I'm not going
(14:49):
to say it's not easy, but Ithink it's so important to know
as a real estate agent, whenyou're feeling depleted, when
you're feeling tired, what is itthat you need to fill your cup?
Is it physical rest?
Is it mental rest?
Is it sensory rest?
Is it creative rest?
Is it emotional rest?
Is it social rest?
Is it spiritual rest?
So knowing that can really helpyou start managing your energy
(15:15):
levels and showing up the waythat you want to in your real
estate business.
So it doesn't always mean youhave to take that like week-long
vacation check out completely.
I know for a long time I thoughtthat I had to do an all or
nothing kind of thing, but itcan sometimes literally just be
as simple as taking a 10-minutewalk outside.
(15:37):
So real estate agents tend to bevery like black and white
thinking, I think, because welike to win or we like to, or
we're losing.
But these can be little thingsthat you implement into your
routine that help keep yourested and keep you at the top
of your game.
So my challenge to you today istake 10 minutes to evaluate
(16:01):
which type of rest you feel likeyou need the most and then
commit to one small thing youcan do to address it.
I really feel like restedagents show up the best for
their clients and they have themost successful businesses
because they are able to bringtheir best selves to their
business.
Most successful businessesbecause they are able to bring
their best selves to theirbusiness.
Not only that, but they alsotend to be happier.
(16:22):
Like you, tend to enjoy yourlife because you are not
resentful of your work depletingyour energy and your resources.
So if this episode resonatedwith you, I would love it if you
would share it with anotheragent who might need a reminder
that it's time to rest, and Ihope that you subscribe for more
tips to build a business and alife that you love.
