Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to Harmony
Hub Health, where my mission is
to provide comprehensive,affordable, integrative care
that addresses the root cause ofhealth issues.
At the Hub, the focus is onindividual patient journeys.
I strive to optimize health, vitality and longevity,
fostering a community where eachperson can thrive in body, mind
and spirit.
(00:21):
Today I'm going to talk aboutsomething that a lot of
conventional medicine providersdon't even believe is a real
thing.
It is adrenal fatigue.
(00:42):
It's the condition that haseveryone from doctors to
wellness influencers scratchingtheir heads.
On one side there's the it'sall in your head camp, and on
the other, it's you know, theadrenals are burnt out brigade.
So what is the truth?
Are we just tired because we'renot getting enough sleep, or
(01:02):
are our poor little adrenalsreally on the brink of collapse?
So we're about to dive into aworld of adrenal health with a
bit of science, a little bit ofsass and a few functional
medicine tricks to help you onyour way to recovery.
So your adrenals are like yourpersonal stress relief system,
(01:23):
working tirelessly behind thescenes to keep you balanced when
life tries to throw you intochaos.
These tiny glands perched ontop of your kidneys produce
important hormones like cortisol, adrenaline and aldosterone, so
these hormones help your bodymanage stress, regulate blood
pressure and maintain energylevels.
(01:43):
You can imagine them as yourinternal emergency response team
that works 24-7.
But as much as we'd love to keepit all cool and casual, the
modern world does not exactlypromote adrenal well-being.
Chronic stress, poor sleepcycles, horrible nutrition and
(02:04):
environmental toxins can alloverload your adrenals, leaving
them struggling to keep up.
And that's where adrenalfatigue comes in.
Adrenal fatigue is essentiallythe result of your adrenals
being overworked.
The constant stress we endurethanks to our jobs or
relationships, social media and, let's face it just, life itself
(02:26):
, causes cortisol levels to stayhigh for way too long.
Over time, your body becomesless responsive to cortisol,
leaving your adrenals strugglingto keep up, and this can result
in symptoms like chronicfatigue, where you're wired at
night, naturally insomniaomniaor disturbed sleep.
(02:47):
It can cause cravings for saltyor sugary foods, brain fog this
is when you can't thinkstraight, no matter how much
coffee you drink Irritability ormood changes, low blood
pressure and a weakened immunesystem.
So, in short, you feel burntout, but not in the fun way you
hear about from wellnessinfluencers.
(03:08):
So here's the million dollarquestion Is adrenal fatigue
really a thing?
Well, here's the deal.
While adrenal fatigue itself isnot an official medical
diagnosis, so you're not goingto find an ICD-10 for it.
So, no, it won't show up inyour standard medical textbook.
But there's enough evidence tosupport that chronic stress and
(03:30):
hormonal imbalances affect thefunction of your adrenal glands.
We know that stress leads todisrupted cortisol rhythms.
You know that wired but tiredfeeling which can cascade into
all kinds of health issues, frommetabolism to mood to immune
function.
But adrenal insufficiency, which is a much more serious
(03:50):
condition, it's a differentballgame altogether.
This occurs when the adrenalsstop producing enough cortisol,
a condition often seen inAddison's disease or secondary
adrenal insufficiency.
It's important to differentiatebetween adrenal insufficiency
and adrenal fatigue.
Important to differentiatebetween adrenal insufficiency
and adrenal fatigue when you'relooking for a proper diagnosis.
But don't worry.
(04:11):
Thanks to functional medicine, there are now ways to measure
cortisol levels and get a clearpicture of your adrenal function
.
So here's how you can get tothe heart of the issue.
In functional medicine, we justlove data, and cortisol testing
is a key player in adrenalhealth.
While most traditional testsmeasure cortisol just at one
point in time, usually in themorning, when cortisol is
(04:33):
supposed to be the highestfunctional medicine, tests like
the Dutch test, which is thedried urine test for
comprehensive hormones, offers amore detailed snapshot.
The Dutch test allows you toassess serial cortisol patterns
throughout the entire daymorning, afternoon, evening and
night so you can see how yourcortisol levels fluctuate or how
they don't.
(04:54):
It's really easy to test forabnormal cortisol levels, but
what most people struggle withis the treatment plan.
This is where functionalmedicine comes in, unlike
conventional medicine, which mayjust tell you to reduce stress.
Thank you, captain.
Obvious or just take an SSRI iswhat I normally see.
Oh, you're probably justdepressed.
(05:15):
Functional medicine digs deeperinto how your lifestyle, your
diet and stress impact yourhormonal balance.
It's about getting personalizedcare to fix the root cause.
Another awesome test forfunctional medicine is that HTMA
that I'm always talking about, the hair tissue mineral analysis
, which gives you insight on howwell your nervous system is
functioning.
Low levels of minerals likemagnesium, potassium and calcium
(05:39):
can suggest adrenal depletion,as these are vital to
maintaining normal adrenalfunction and calming your
nervous system.
Htma can show you if you'rerunning low on the building
blocks your body needs to managestress effectively.
Now let's talk about theelephant in the room hormonal
chaos.
Elevated cortisol isn't justcausing brain fog and insomnia.
(06:01):
It also wreaks havoc on yourother hormones.
When cortisol is chronicallyelevated because of stress, it
directly impacts the balance ofyour sex hormones, which
includes your estrogen, yourprogesterone and testosterone.
Estrogen and progesterone areaffected because chronic
cortisol production leads toestrogen dominance.
(06:23):
Because cortisol uses upprogesterone, this causes
irregular cycles, pms and moodswings.
Too much cortisol also messeswith that HPA axis, which
regulates your reproductivehormones.
The HPA axis is thehypothalamic, pituitary adrenal
(06:43):
axis and it's a criticalneuroendocrine system that is
involved in your body's responseto stress.
This is the communicationpathway between the hypothalamus
, the pituitary gland and youradrenal glands working to
regulate hormones that arereleased and maintained during
stress and to maintain thathomeostasis.
Elevated cortisol can alsosuppress your testosterone
(07:07):
levels, which means you mayexperience symptoms like low
libido, fatigue and muscleweakness.
And let's not forget yourthyroid.
The thyroid is also in thathormonal party.
High cortisol levels suppressT3, which is the active form of
thyroid hormone, and that canlead to symptoms like weight
gain, fatigue and coldintolerance.
This cascade of hormonalimbalance makes adrenal fatigue
(07:31):
not just a fatigue problem butalso a hormonal nightmare.
And let me be clear, it's notjust about feeling tired anymore
.
It's all about all the thingsStress, sex, hormone imbalances,
thyroid dysfunction and poormetabolic function.
And let's face it, your bodyhas been running on fumes for
far too long and it's time togive those adrenals a little TLC
(07:53):
.
This is when I start talkingabout the adrenal cocktail.
The concept of an adrenalcocktail is as simple as it is
brilliant.
It's a combination ofelectrolytes, vitamin C and salt
designed to help replenishnutrients that are often
depleted during chronic stress.
A basic recipe that I use in alot of my functional medicine
programs is half a cup of orangejuice for the vitamin C, a
(08:17):
quarter teaspoon of sea saltthat is to replenish your sodium
, which is a critical mineralfor your adrenals Half a
teaspoon of crema tartar I usedto only use that for my royal
icing because it is rich inpotassium, which is another
mineral that your adrenals crave, but it's great in an adrenal
(08:37):
cocktail and then optional wouldbe to add a splash of coconut
water or some aloe vera juicefor extra hydration and for the
gut.
So this cocktail can be a gamechanger for people who are
stressed out and need a naturalway to nourish the adrenals.
Plus, it's an excellentalternative to grabbing that
sugary sports drink or a cup ofcoffee that leaves you crashing
(08:58):
later.
Other things that I love tosupport adrenal function are
orthomolecular supplements,because they're all about
optimizing health with the rightnutrients at the right doses
when it comes to the adrenals.
Several orthomolecularsupplements can support adrenal
recovery and hormonal balance.
So you're going to want vitaminC.
Your adrenals are majorconsumers of vitamin C.
(09:20):
It helps support cortisolproduction and it fights
oxidative stress, which is oftenelevated in people with adrenal
fatigue.
So you might want to tryorthomolecular's Vitamin C-1000
for optimal adrenal support.
Or magnesium, a naturalrelaxant that helps calm your
nervous system and improve sleepquality Both really important
(09:40):
when healing adrenal fatigue.
So the B vitamins, especiallyB5, which is a pantothenic acid,
which is the vitamin of theadrenals.
B5 supports cortisol productionand helps you handle stress.
Rhodiola is an adaptogen thathelps your body adapt to stress
and improve energy levels.
Ashwagandha is another powerfuladaptogen that helps balance
(10:04):
cortisol levels and boost energyand improve mood.
Now adrenaviv maybe it'sadrenvive I'm trying to think of
how to put adrenal and revivetogether, but adrenaviv this is
a supplement that isspecifically designed to support
adrenal health fromorthomolecular.
It helps to stabilize cortisolproduction and support long-term
(10:26):
adrenal recovery.
To stabilize cortisolproduction and support long-term
adrenal recovery.
It has ingredients likelicorice, root rhodiola and holy
basil and it's an excellentaddition to any adrenal recovery
protocol which I have manyBased on you.
These are all very personalized.
Serenity is another one of minethat I have a lot of patients on
.
There's a Serenity and aSerenity PM.
So if stress is keeping you upat night or making you anxious
(10:47):
during the day, a Serenity and aSerenity PM.
So if stress is keeping you upat night or making you anxious
during the day, serenity is afantastic option.
It has ingredients likeL-theanine and so many.
What's the other one?
Fosadilcerine?
It helps modulate the stressresponse and calm the mind.
There's a lot more in it, butoff the top of my head right
there, I just went blank.
(11:08):
But Serenity PM is the perfectevening companion to support
restful, restorative sleep whilecontinuing the recovery process
.
Okay, so I just had to pull upSerenity.
So Serenity has the vitamin Cniacin, which is B2.
(11:28):
It has vitamin B6.
It has folate as methyltetrahydrofolic acid.
It has methylcobalamin as theB12.
There is dimagnesium malate inthere.
It does have some zinc, but italso has inositol, taurine,
l-theanine.
It has pharma, gaba and has5-HTP.
So that is in the normaldaytime Serenity L-theanine.
(11:53):
It has PharmaGabba and it has5-HTP.
So that is in the normaldaytime serenity.
And what that really helps todo is it supports a state of
calmness and relaxation, itincreases serotonin and GABA
production in your brain, itaddresses any neurotransmitter
signaling systems and itsupports that occasional
sleeplessness signaling systemsand it supports that occasional
sleeplessness.
(12:13):
The PM version of Serenity, which is called Serenity PM, is
formulated specifically forthose patients with occasional
sleeplessness and it gives themmore calmness and relaxation.
It supports a normal, uninterrupted sleep and also
provides that comprehensiveneurotransmitter support.
And that is the same.
It's the vitamin C, it's theniacin.
It's the vitamin C, it's theniacin, it's the B6, it's the
folate as the methyltetrahydrofolic acid, it has
(12:38):
calcium, it has magnesium, somezinc, some taurine, the 5-HTP,
it has that pharmacaba and italso has that phosphatidylserine
.
So that is good and you can mixand match those depending on if
you need in the evening to helpyou with that sleep, or take
during the day.
(12:58):
And here's the truth that nosingle supplement is going to
revive your adrenals overnight.
It's tempting to think thatpopping a pill like serenity is
going to do the trick, but thereality is you need an entire
plan to get your body back inbalance.
I have many patients that cometo me and they're like oh, I
take ashwagandha but I'm notbetter yet.
(13:19):
So a comprehensive plan to healyour adrenals has to include
many different things.
The first one has to be stressmanagement.
This can be through meditation, yoga, deep breathing, just
taking time to relax.
You should be doing somethingdaily.
Next is diet nourishing foodslike healthy fats, high quality
(13:41):
protein and plenty of vitaminsand minerals to support your
adrenal glands.
Then come supplements, whichcan be any adrenal supporting
supplements.
Just make sure they're qualityand not from Amazon.
I thoroughly believe inOrthomolecular.
They're the highest qualityI've seen and they're just
absolutely amazing.
Sleep you have to prioritizeseven to nine hours of restful
(14:01):
sleep to make sure that youradrenals have a chance to
recharge.
And then you do have to get alittle bit of exercise in so low
impact activities this is justwalking.
Maybe it's swimming or yogathat don't tax your already
overstressed body.
And if you're serious aboutadrenal recovery, it's very
important to take thisintegrated approach.
Supplements alone won't cut it.
(14:22):
They're just one part of thepuzzle.
The key to healing adrenalfatigue is a well-rounded plan
that addresses your lifestyle, nutrition and stress levels.
So at Monarch Beauty and Spa,we do know that adrenal health
isn't just about supplements andgetting the right tests.
It's about reducing stress, nourishing the body and creating
a space where you can trulyunwind and heal.
(14:44):
So there are a lot oftreatments that the estheticians
provide there.
We have massage therapists aswell that can give you some
great stress reducing treatments.
There's also some medicaltreatments that I offer.
One of them would be like theinfrared sauna sessions and the
infrared sauna bag.
It's a fantastic way to supportdetoxification while promoting
(15:07):
deep relaxation.
I do have an infrared sauna inmy basement that I keep saying
I'm going to use more regularlybecause regular sessions do help
reduce cortisol levels, italleviates muscle tension, it
improves blood flow and itcreates the perfect environment
for your adrenals to rest andrecover.
Sculpting like body sculptingand lymphatic drainage, because
(15:29):
stress can result in bloating, water retention and overall
discomfort.
So using our Orbix microcompression vibration or our
Aspelta body sculpting reallyhelp with lymphatic drainage and
that can help flush out toxinsand reduce stress and help you
alleviate the physical symptomsof adrenal fatigue.
I have many IV wellnessinfusions that are packed with
(15:50):
electrolytes like B vitamins andascorbic acid, which is vitamin
C, and they can really giveyour body the nutrients that it
needs to support adrenalfunction and replenish what's
been depleted during thatchronic stress.
I love when I go through thoseHTMA and you can clearly see
people with their stress and howtheir minerals have just
(16:11):
completely diminished from allof their soft tissue, like their
hair.
Another one of my favoritesthat I use there is the PEMF
therapy, that's pulsedelectromagnetic field.
It is a very advanced treatmentthat promotes relaxation.
It can improve sleep qualityand helps reduce stress by
promoting cellular function andenergy production.
(16:32):
It's the ideal modality forsupporting adrenal recovery by
stimulating cellular repair andimproving overall vitality.
There's also a Pulsetto If youhave seen those.
If you have not seen thePulsetto, you may want to pull
them up on their website becausethey're $200 off right now.
The Pulseto offers a direct, easy way to stimulate the vagus
(16:54):
nerve through this little device.
It's very simple, you can useit at home, you can travel with
it and it supports your body'srelaxation response.
By stimulating the vagus nerveit helps activate the
parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes rest, digestion,
recovery and calmness.
But even without a device, there are some other home
(17:16):
techniques that you can try.
One of them is deep breathing.
I know a lot of people poo-poowhen I talk about it.
But diaphragmatic breathing, deep, slow breathing especially
when focusing on diaphragmaticbreathing, that is, when you're
breathing from your belly, youcan stimulate your vagus nerve
that way and that type ofbreathing activates the
(17:36):
parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for that
relaxation and calmness.
All you have to do is find acomfortable seat or you can even
lie down.
You can inhale deeply throughyour nose, allowing your belly
to expand as you fill your lungswith air, and then count to
four, then hold your breath forfour counts and then exhale
(17:57):
slowly through your mouth forsix to eight counts, letting out
all the air, and you can repeatthat cycle for five to 10
minutes, focusing on deep, slowbreaths.
There are some people when theyare in the sauna bag or when
they're on the pimp mat.
I do use the Calm app at thespa which kind of helps with
meditation and helps guidedbreathing.
(18:19):
Another one that you probablyhave heard a lot of people using
are cold exposure.
Whether it's cryotherapy or itis cold plunging, you know cold
exposure can activate that vagusnerve and help trigger your
rest and digest response.
The cold stimulates thatparasympathetic nervous system
by shocking the body into astate of calm and relaxation.
You can also just do it bysplashing cold water on your
(18:42):
face or soak a washcloth in coldwater and then put it on your
face.
Gosh, that just took me back tothe hospital.
I can remember a time when Iwas in the ICU and somebody was
in an arrhythmia, which is whenyour heart's going a little
crazy, and I took ice water andput a washcloth and just put
that on their face and everyonewas looking at me like wow, that
(19:03):
was really cool because I gotthem out of their arrhythmia.
But you can also just take acold shower for one to two
minutes at the end of yourregular shower and get that
little brief but powerful vagalresponse and then turn it back
warm before you get out.
Another one that people arealways shocked to hear is that
you can gargle water tostimulate your vagus nerve by
(19:23):
activating the muscles in yourthroat and vocal cords which are
connected to your vagus nerve.
So how you do that is you cantake a sip of water, but you
want to like vigorously garglefor about 30 seconds to a minute
, and if you do that two tothree times a day, you'll feel
more calm.
Or you can just do that whenyou do need to calm.
If you start to feel likethings are about to get unhinged
(19:45):
, you can try that quick littletip.
Some people like to sing orchant and that's why you may see
a lot of religions that dosinging or chanting, but
sometimes singing or humming, especially at a lower pitch.
Think you know singing along toyour favorite song or that
chanting of the OM, it engagesthe vocal cords and muscles in
(20:06):
the throat and they are closelytied to the vagus nerve.
So those activities can promotethe release of endorphins and
help induce a calming effect.
So you can just sit or humalong to a calming music or your
favorite tune for a few minutes.
Some people even will say, ifyou're driving somewhere and
you're belting out your favoritesongs, that you feel so much
(20:29):
better after.
I don't think they even realizethat it's because they
stimulated this vagus nerve.
You could even chant or otherany type of soothing sound for
five to 10 minutes and when youactivate that you are going to
feel much better.
And then, if you don't like tosing, yoga and meditation.
(20:49):
You know there's certain yogaposes and meditation techniques
that focus on calming the bodyand activating the vagus nerve
when you do a pose like child'spose or cat-cow the corpse pose.
They're gentle and they canencourage parasympathetic
nervous system activation.
Meditation helps you get intothat calm state and reduces
(21:11):
cortisol levels and you can doguided ones with breathing and
that's really helpful.
And even just massage.
You don't think about footmassage as doing that, but ear
massage and feet.
You know they can activate thenervous system.
(21:32):
And then the vagus nerve hasbranches that run through the
ears, so massaging the ears canbe a very effective way to
stimulate it.
You might notice children I'mjust thinking of one right now
when they're crying sometimesthey will start to rub their
ears.
It's because they know that byrubbing the area behind your
(21:53):
earlobes, the back of the earsand the earlobes themselves, can
activate that nerve.
Even intermittent fasting hasbeen shown to activate the vagus
nerve and promote cellularrepair.
It helps balance the nervoussystem and reduce cortisol
levels over time.
So you can try fasting for 12to 16 hours, like fasting
(22:14):
overnight, and then skippingbreakfast while focusing on
healthy hydration andnutrient-dense meals during your
feeding feeding window.
And then of course, one of myfavorites is laughter.
You know they do say thatlaughter is the best medication,
but when you laugh hard, youcan activate your vagus nerve by
stimulating the diaphragm andyour vocal cords.
So laughter has been shown tolower cortisol and improve mood,
(22:35):
making it a great naturalstress reliever.
Haven't you ever laughed sohard that you got short of
breath or felt like you couldpass out?
So watch a funny movie or watchup some stand-up comedy and
share a laugh with friends orfamily.
This is also why just spendingtime with loved ones are so
important.
Another one that people use areacupressure, even acupuncture.
(22:58):
But acupressure points like PC6, which is located on that inner
forearm, and ST36, which isjust below your knee, are known
to stimulate the vagus nerve andreduce stress and anxiety.
So you can apply gentlepressure to those acupressure
points for one to two minuteseach and then breathe deeply
while you do that and you'llnotice a difference.
(23:20):
There's even progressive musclerelaxation.
I do this a lot when I'm usingthe Calm app, but PMR involves
tensing and relaxing differentmuscle groups, which activates
the parasympathetic nervoussystem and helps regulate
cortisol levels.
So, on the Calm app, it'll talkyou through and it'll either go
from toes up to your head orit'll start at your head and go
(23:42):
down to your toes and as youmove through each muscle group,
you hold tension for five to 10seconds and then you relax it,
and if you do this 15 to 20minutes before bed or when
you're feeling stressed, you'regoing to feel a big difference.
Anybody that tells me theycannot sleep and I have them do
that method they are knocked out.
(24:03):
So healing adrenal fatigue isnot an overnight fix.
Sorry, it's just not.
Depending on the severity ofthe condition and how long it's
been neglected, it can takeanywhere from three to six
months, or even longer, just torestore balance to your adrenal
system.
Think of it as fixing a brokenfoundation.
Like you can't rush the process, and the key is patience.
(24:24):
By adopting stress-reducingpractices, improving your diet,
supplementing with the rightnutrients and getting enough
sleep, your adrenals will startto recover.
But keep in mind that thetimeline might be different for
everyone and it will depend onhow much effort you put into
supporting your body.
I definitely think that adrenalfatigue is real, even if it is
(24:45):
controversial, and it affectsmany people who are burnt out,
stressed out and running onfumes.
I have been there and whileit's easy to test for cortisol
imbalances with tools like Dutchor the HTMA, it is important to
remember that the real healingbegins with a comprehensive
treatment plan, which is wherefunctional medicine shines, and
(25:06):
this is where Harmony Hub Healthcomes in.
So give your adrenals some love, manage your stress, get the
sleep you need, nourish yourbody with the right foods and
supplements, and don't forget totreat yourself with the right
therapies.
Come see me at Monarch.

say for myself with my verystressful lifestyle I had, with
the career that I had, it tookme about a year to get my
adrenals healthy, and it wasn'tone thing or one week, and I
actually did it withoutsupplements because I did not
(26:54):
know about all of the adaptogenswhen I was going through it.
It's a work in progress and Ihave gone through so I can guide
