Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to Harmony
Hub Health, where my mission is
to provide comprehensive,affordable, integrative care
that addresses the root cause ofhealth issues.
At the Hub, the focus is onindividual patient journeys.
I strive to optimize health, vitality and longevity,
fostering a community where eachperson can thrive in body, mind
and spirit.
(00:21):
Today I want to talk about avirus that's been around for
ages, quietly wreaking havoc inyour system while you're
distracted with life.
This is the Epstein-Barr virus, also known as EBV, and my
(00:45):
earliest memory of EBV was aneighbor that we had when I
lived in Fort Walton Beach,florida.
I was very young at the time somy memory may not be fully
accurate, but I remember therewas a son who was in high school
or older and he got mono andthey made him stay in their
(01:06):
camper outside of their housefor several, several weeks.
So you might have heard of EBV,you may know it as a culprit
behind mono, but did you knowthat it could be messing with
your health in many ways thatyou're not even aware of In
functional medicine?
I like to take a deep dive intohow EBV impacts your body, not
(01:28):
just when you're in bed feelingawful with sore throat and
fatigue, but in sneaky ways thataffect your immune system,
energy levels and overall health.
So I want to kind of break itdown a little bit.
Just in the past few weeks atHarmony Hub Health I have come
across three EBV patients.
One of them came to me becauseshe had EBV and wanted treatment
(01:50):
.
One of them came for otherthings but knew that she had EBV
, so we started treatment to seeif that could help with that.
And then I had another patientthat came in with just
unknowingly having EBV.
But because of the otherfunctional medicine testing we
did, I decided to check for EBVand, lo and behold, it was
(02:12):
probably what was affecting herenergy levels and draining her
so much.
So I thought this would be agood time to talk about it and
really give some greatinformation in case you are
suffering from it or think youmight be.
So Epstein-Barr virus is amember of the herpes virus
family.
You know the one that's alsoresponsible for cold sores.
(02:33):
It's that party crasher that'sbeen lurking in your body and
once you're exposed to it,usually through saliva that's
why they call it the kissingdisease it takes up residence in
your cells.
Ebv does not just hang out andmind its own business.
It can be activated at any timeby stress, poor nutrition and
any various trigger that can dothat.
(02:57):
Most people get infected withEBV during their childhood or
early adulthood and never reallynotice it, but for some unlucky
individuals, ebv stays dormantin the body for years before
waking up and wreaking havoc.
When it does, it often leads tomore than just the kissing
disease.
We're talking about chronicfatigue, autoimmune flare-ups
(03:20):
and even cancer in extreme cases.
But if you're wondering signsthat you may have EBV besides
the obvious fatigue, you knowEBV could make you feel like a
zombie for weeks.
But what if you didn't catch itduring the official episode?
Here's where EBV likes to sneakin and make things a little
(03:42):
trickier.
So common signs include thechronic fatigue.
This is the kind of fatiguethat makes you feel like your
body has been hit by a truck andthen it came around the corner
and ran over you a couple moretimes.
Then there's the brain fog.
If you ever feel like yourbrain is just wrapped in cotton
wool, ebv could be the blame forthat as well.
(04:05):
And of course, this is afterwe've ruled out other factors
that we can talk about duringconsultation.
Also, ebv is linked toautoimmune conditions like
Hashimoto's lupus, rheumatoidarthritis Isn't that fun,
because usually if you have oneof those, you have more than one
.
If you have frequent colds orinfections, you know EBV is
(04:26):
something to look at because itcould weaken your immune system.
It leaves you vulnerable tobugs and viruses that normally
wouldn't stand a chance.
If you have swollen lymph nodes, they're likely your body's
emergency response team, andwhen they're on high alert, it's
usually a sign that somethingis up alert, it's usually a sign
(04:48):
that something is up.
What about an EBV flare?
What happens in your body andwhy is it such a pain?
So picture this you're goingabout your day feeling pretty
good until suddenly you're hitwith a wave of fatigue, brain
fog, joint aches, you might evenget swollen glands or a sore
throat for good measure, and youthink not again.
That is an EBV flare and yourbody's way of telling you that
this crafty little virus iscausing some chaos behind the
(05:10):
scenes.
But what is actually happeningon the cellular level?
How does EBV go from being aninvisible bystander to causing
so much trouble?
Okay, let's dive into that.
So first we'll talk about howEBV gets comfy in your body.
It's like that house guest whoarrives uninvited, settles in
(05:30):
and then quietly stays hidden, dormant, minding its own
business for a while.
Ebv enters your body when it isfirst contracted, even you know,
mostly saliva.
That's why it's the kissingdisease.
It takes up residence in your Bcells.
This is a type of white bloodcell that is central to your
immune system.
Once in, ebv essentially goesunderground, integrating itself
(05:55):
into the DNA of your B cells.
Think of it as EBV's version ofthe Houdini escape trick.
It stays inside the cells.
It evades detection by yourimmune system like an invisible
ghost.
This is the dormant phase, andit can last for years.
During this phase, ebv does notcause much of a ruckus.
You're walking around oblivious, maybe having a drink or two,
(06:18):
but definitely not with EBV inmind.
And then now, this is whenthings get interesting, ebv in
mind.
And then now this is whenthings get interesting.
If your immune system getscompromised, ebv can decide to
reactivate.
Think of it like a dormantvolcano that suddenly erupts
without warning.
It could be triggered by stress, sleep deprivation, hormonal
(06:38):
changes, poor diet or viralinfections that weaken your
immune system.
And this is when EBV's eviltwin emerges.
When it reactivates, the virusbursts out of its dormant state.
And here's what happens.
First EBV starts replicating.
The virus wakes up and startsmultiplying, like a surprise
party you never asked for.
(06:59):
It hijacks your B cells andforces them to turn out new
virus particles.
Your immune system, stilltrying to keep everything in
check, suddenly finds itselfoverwhelmed by the sudden burst
of viral activity.
Then you have your immunesystem response.
Your body reacts to thereactivation of EBV by sending
(07:19):
in cytotoxic T cells.
This is your immune system SWATteam to hunt down and destroy
infected B-cells.
What happens next?
Inflammation.
These T-cells rush in likebouncers in a nightclub, but the
problem is they're also causingcollateral damage to your
healthy cells along the way.
This is when you feel theswollen lymph nodes, the sore
(07:40):
throat and joint pain.
As the immune system gets firedup, it releases cytokines,
these signaling molecules thathelp control immune responses.
Normally they are kind ofhelpful, but when EBV is
involved they can go intooverdrive, leading to cytokine
storm.
I saw this a lot with the COVIDvirus when I was working in the
(08:01):
intensive care unit.
This storm creates a cascade ofinflammation that can leave you
feeling fatigued, achy andgenerally miserable.
The real problem with EBV isthat it doesn't just invade any
old cell.
It goes straight for the Bcells which are responsible for
producing antibodies that helpyour immune system fight off
infections, and as EBVreplicates, it uses your B cells
(08:26):
as its personal factory for newviruses.
As a result, the body'santibody production can get all
mixed up and you might seeautoimmune responses or chronic
infection issues because thebody cannot keep up with the
viral load.
Eventually your immune systemgets a grip on the flare up and
puts the virus back into quasi-dormancy.
(08:46):
But the thing is, ebv doesn'tactually ever leave.
It just waits for the nextopportunity to pop back up.
When your immune system isvulnerable and during an EB
flare, you might feel likeyou're battling an invisible
enemy, but on a cellular levelit is a full-on war.
The viral replication, immunesystem activation and
(09:08):
inflammation all contribute tothe symptoms you experience.
This can lead to chronicfatigue.
When your body is in aninflammatory state, it uses up a
ton of energy fighting thevirus, leaving you exhausted.
It's like running a marathonwhile carrying a backpack full
of bricks.
Then the brain fog, thatfeeling of being mentally hazy.
(09:29):
It's tied to inflammation inthe brain caused by cytokine
release.
Your neurons are like what dayis it again?
Then the muscle and joint painas your immune system runs amok.
Inflammation doesn't just stayin your lymph nodes, it spreads
to your muscles, your joints, making you feel like you've just
done a crazy workout, exceptyou did not.
(09:50):
And when EBV triggers aprolonged immune response, it
can confuse the body intoattacking its own tissues,
leading to autoimmune diseaseslike Hashimoto's, thyroiditis or
lupus.
Ankylosing spondylosis is onethat I've noticed.
And if you're prone to frequentEBV reactivations or your
(10:13):
immune system is constantlyunder attack, you could be
looking at chronic EBV along-term game of whack-a-mole.
Remember that whack-a-molewhere you're constantly just
hammering down.
That's how I feel when you getthese symptoms that pop up and
you try to whack them one by oneand you know it kind of fades
away but doesn't go awaycompletely.
So this chronic state can leadto fatigue syndromes, autoimmune
diseases and persistent viralinfections.
(10:36):
It's a tough cycle to break, but with functional medicine I
focus on restoring immunebalance and managing EBV
flare-ups with a mix ofnutrition, lifestyle changes,
immune modulation and supportivetherapy like ozone or
orthomolecular.
So don't worry, because EBVmight be tricky, but with the
(10:56):
right support you can manageflares and keep this virus from
stealing the show.
Okay, if you're listening tothis and nodding your head,
thinking, oh my goodness, thissounds like me, you might be
wondering how to get tested Inthe world of functional medicine
.
I'm all about understandingwhat's really going on in your
body beyond just the surfacesymptoms.
So traditional testing for EBVis done with a blood test
(11:19):
checking for the presence ofantibodies like IgM and IgG.
But functional medicine takesit a step further by checking
for EBV, viral load and immune, looking at how well your body's
responding to this long timeresident virus.
I'm talking more than justwhether or not you have it right
now.
The comprehensive testing canalso provide clues about your
(11:41):
immune health how much EBV is inyour system and whether it's
causing a chronic issue.
Ebv is so crafty I thought Iwas crafty.
It can take root in your bodyand hide out in your cells,
waiting for the perfect momentto flare up.
In functional medicine, I don'tjust throw antibiotics and call
it a day, because spoiler alertantibiotics don't do squat for
(12:02):
viruses.
Instead, I focus on supportingyour body's immune system and
detoxification pathways to helpclear out the virus or at least
keep it in check.
Now some functional medicineapproaches with the EBV
treatment.
One is immune support.
Boosting your immune system isso key, so I might recommend
(12:23):
things like vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc and herbal remedies like
elderberry and echinacea.
Stress management has to be abig part of it, because stress
is a big trigger for EBVactivation.
Management has to be a big partof it, because stress is a big
trigger for EBV activation.
That would mean meditation, yoga, vagal nerve stimulation
(12:44):
and other forms of stress relief, which are very important for
keeping that sneaky virus in itsdormant state.
The detox protocols that I havebecause EBV loves to hang out
in your liver and other organs,so supporting your detox systems
with liver support supplementsand gentle detox protocols
really can help Gut health, because a huge chunk of your
immune system lives in your gut.
I focus on healing andmaintaining a healthy gut flora
(13:05):
with probiotics, prebiotics andpossibly gut healing herbs.
These are things that will goover at your consultation.
There's also antiviral herbs.
These are herbs that are knownto fight viruses, such as
licorice root, cat's claw, andrographis, which can support
your body in keeping EBV incheck.
And then I have peptide therapy.
(13:25):
In some cases I love to usepeptides like thymus and alpha-1
.
That can really help stimulateyour immune system to attack EBV
more effectively.
Now this is where I think thingsget more exciting, because
here's my favorite absolutetreatments.
It's ozone therapy and thenorthomolecular.
These are two game-changingtreatments that I'm using right
(13:46):
now when it comes to tacklingEBV head-on.
So for ozone therapy, imaginethis.
Imagine your body is ahigh-tech fortress and EBV is
that annoying invader that knowshow to sneak in and hide in the
deepest corners.
Now ozone therapy is the secretagent that knows every hidden
(14:07):
passage.
It can trap the invader andforce it out.
And I want to break out how thesuperhero therapy works to kick
EBV's butt.
All right.
Ozone is a molecule made up ofthree oxygen atoms, so O3.
And while that may sound like achemistry lesson, trust me,
this is a complete game changer.
I'm seeing it happen with myown eyes.
(14:28):
When ozone enters your body, itworks its magic in three main
ways that make EBV quiver.
Number one it boosts oxygenlike a supercharger.
Ebv is so lazy it thrives inlow oxygen environments where it
can hide and just wreak havocwithout much resistance.
Ozone therapy, however, supercharges the oxygen levels
(14:52):
in your bloodstream.
It makes the environment veryunfriendly for any virus.
Ebv doesn't like fresh oxygenrich atmosphere.
So it's like making EBV try tosurvive in a super fancy
penthouse when it's used tohanging out in a creepy, nasty,
crusty basement, and EBV doesn'tstand a chance.
Number two it fires up yourimmune system.
(15:14):
Think of ozone like your body'smotivational speaker.
When it enters, it stimulatesyour immune cells to work harder
, like setting your immunesystem on beast mode.
It activates your white bloodcells those are your immune
system's elite fighters and itmakes them more efficient in
identifying and fighting off EBV.
This is really importantbecause, remember, ebv is a
(15:37):
master of disguise.
With ozone therapy, your immunesystem gets the boost it needs
to spot and destroy EBV beforethey can even cause any trouble.
And then, number three it's theviral hitman mode.
So it's a direct attack on EBV.
But that's not all.
Ozone therapy doesn't just relyon making your immune system
(15:59):
stronger.
It directly attacks the virus.
Ozone's high reactivity helpsbreak down viral particles.
It destroys the structuralintegrity of the virus.
It's like a hammer smashingglass.
So ozone can cripple the EBVparticles, making them unable to
replicate or spread.
Basically, ebv gets knocked downand ozone is there to make sure
(16:21):
it stays down.
This is when I really have togive, maybe, extra binders,
because, as we're breaking downthe virus structure, you might
need some help eliminating it.
But when you get ozone therapy, you're not just helping your
body breathe easier even thoughthat is a big perk You're making
your body's hostile territoryfor EBV.
With its ability to boostoxygen, ramp up your immune
(16:44):
defenses and directly attack thevirus, ozone therapy becomes a
virus busting ninja that kicksEBV out of its hiding spots into
the nearest exit.
Ninja that kicks EBV out of itshiding spots and to the nearest
exit.
So ozone therapy doesn't justsit around and hope EBV goes
away on its own.
It declares war on the virus,it revs up your immune defenses
and it leaves EBV really nowhereto hide.
(17:06):
So next time EBV thinks it cansneak in and cause trouble, your
body will be armed with thesuperpower of ozone therapy to
send it packing.
That is my absolute number onefavorite treatment for viruses,
and especially EBV.
The second one isorthomolecular.
Orthomolecular, as most of youknow, is so tried and true.
(17:31):
It is the most amazingsupplement protocols I've ever
experienced ever.
But I have my own EBV protocolusing orthomolecular, and you
know I love this approach withorthomolecular because we're
talking about natural killercell stimulation.
Now, this is EBV's worstnightmare.
(17:53):
Besides ozone, natural killercells are the unsung heroes of
your immune system that are justwaiting for the chance to
obliterate unwanted invaderslike EBV.
Natural killer cells are kindof like the bodyguard squad of
your immune system.
They're little badasses thatpatrol your body constantly on
the lookout for cells that aremisbehaving, whether it's a
(18:15):
virus like EBV, a cancer cell oranything else that doesn't
belong.
When they find somethingsuspicious, they go full John
Wick so they destroy it with adeadly precision.
Natural killer cells are thesnipers that can spot EBV hiding
out in your cells and take itdown before it can do any more
damage.
Sometimes your natural killercells need a little help,
(18:38):
especially when EBV has beenlaying low and your immune
system needs a nudge to step upits game.
When your immune system needs anudge to step up its game,
that's where orthomolecular NKcell stimulation comes in.
So this is orthomolecular NKstim, and of all the cells that
make up the immune system, natural killer cells are the
most aggressive.
They make up about 15% of thetotal circulating lymphocyte
(19:01):
part of your white blood cellsand they're part of your body's
innate immune system.
Natural killer cells are callednatural killer cells because
they do not need to recognizespecific antibodies before
releasing those cytokines.
These are those strongintracellular signals to destroy
abnormal cells, allowing for afaster immune response.
Once target cells areidentified, your natural killer
(19:25):
cells trigger an immune responseand direct other immune cells,
like dendritic cells, macrophages, t cells, to take
action against a potentialthreat to the body.
So enhancing your naturalkiller cell activity boosts the
body's targeted immune responseand promotes the normal process
of eliminating unhealthy cells.
(19:45):
Nk-stem is a targeted formulaspecifically designed to support
your body's immune response byboosting your natural killer
cell activity.
Nk-stem includes a synergisticcombination of large
arabinoglactin, olipurine that'sthe active ingredient found in
olive leaf extract you know howI feel about that with
(20:07):
hydroxytyrosol Asemanin, that'sthe immune stimulant constituent
of aloe vera concentrate, andchelated zinc.
So NK Stim's unique preparationsupports immune function,
boosts natural killer cellactivity, promotes the growth of
healthy bacteria probiotics inthe gut and helps maintain
(20:29):
bacterial balance throughoutyour body.
Nkcm is the ideal preparationfor those with immune challenges
and gastrointestinal relatedconcerns.
So I have people just take twocapsules twice a day.
And here I can break down thedifferent ingredients.
One of them is zinc.
Zinc is known to play a centralrole in boosting your immune
(20:49):
response.
So zinc affects multipleaspects of immune responses,
from maintaining the integrityof the physical barriers, like
your skin and the mucosalberries to activating genes
within lymphocytes.
Zinc is also important for thenormal development of a
multitude of immune cells, including neutrophils, your
natural killer cells, tlymphocytes, b lymphocytes and
(21:12):
improving IgG antibody response.
As a key trace mineral requiredfor immune activity and
development, supplementationwith zinc for a period of one to
two months has been shown tostimulate a stronger immune
response.
I talk about zinc a lot, especially when I do the HTMA,
and I like to balance minerals.
I would say 99% of the timezinc is out of balance.
(21:33):
Then we have the arabinogalactinheartwood.
These are a class ofpolysaccharides that are found
in the larch tree and, as ahighly long and densely branched
polysaccharide, it's been shownto increase the production of
short-chain fatty acids,including butyrate and
propionate.
So since SCFAs, or short-chainfatty acids, are the primary
(21:59):
fuel source of beneficialbacteria found in your gut, this
has been shown to boost thatintestinal flora, including
bifidobacteria and lactobacillus.
So supporting the number ofbeneficial bacteria in your gut
can significantly enhance yourimmune function and it's been
found to stimulate those naturalkiller cells cytotoxicity.
(22:20):
Okay, then we have the aloevera concentrate.
This is a 200 to oneconcentration.
This is a 200 to 1concentration.
This is a member of the lilyfamily and it's been used
topically and orally as atraditional remedy for thousands
and thousands of years.
So the active ingredient inaloe is the asamanin.
It's a complex carbohydratethat's been found to be the
(22:40):
component responsible for theimmune boosting properties of
aloe vera.
Asamanin has been shown tostimulate a multitude of key
components of the immune system, including macrophage, cytokine
activity, nitric oxide release, and that is so huge right now.
When I went to that hormonecruise, everybody was selling
nitric oxide in a bottle.
(23:02):
I had not heard of that, butthat is a really big thing right
now.
This is a natural way to dothat Surface molecule expression
and cell morphologic changes,so all of which produce a
sharper, highly effective immuneresponse.
So the aloe vera used in NKstem has had the aloe and light
compounds removed, so thiseliminates the possibility of
(23:24):
producing the laxative effect, because some of you might be
like wait a minute, you gave mealoe for my pooping.
It has been removed in this, soit's normally observed
following ingestion of aloe veraconcentrate.
Then there's that olive leafextract.
So alluropan is a uniquepolyphenol molecule in olive
leaf extract and it has a numberof health-promoting benefits.
(23:46):
So the olive tree produces thisabundantly in its leaves, as
well as the olive fruit itself.
So special processingtechniques now allow for the
extraction of a stable, standardized form of that
alluropin, and it is a potentantioxidant and promotes
inflammatory balance.
Studies have indicated that itboosts host immune defenses and
(24:08):
supports a strong immuneresponse during seasonal and
respiratory challenges, so it'sreally helpful for those with
immune challenges related to animbalance of bacteria in the gut
.
Along with this, I do also liketo add viricid in the gut.
Along with this, I do also liketo add viricid.
(24:30):
I do give viricid for any typeof person that is suffering from
a virus, but for EBV I loveviricid as well.
It has a synergistic nutrientblend of zinc, vitamin C,
vitamin A.
It has lysine.
It has pantothenic acid, whichis B5.
They all play a major role inmaintaining healthy, functioning
immune system.
The virucid also has blackelderberry extract.
(24:50):
This is a long history oftraditional use among herbalists
and it is native to Europe, northern Africa and western and
central Asia.
And the bioactive components ofelderberry include the
flavonoid, anthocyanin.
So Viracid is standardized toinclude black elderberry extract
(25:11):
with 13% anthocyanins.
That's amazing.
And Astragalus membranus isnative to northern China.
It has been traditionally usedto strengthen the immune system,
and the root is one of the twocommonly used species in
traditional Chinese medicine and, being half Chinese, you know I
fully believe in that.
(25:32):
And then echinacea this is aperennial herb that's been used
for centuries in Native Americanmedicine.
Current research has supportedechinacea's clinical
applications, as this botanicalhas been the subject of more
than, I would say, 300scientific studies.
Echinacea activates multipleaspects of immune function,
(25:53):
including enhancing leukocytesand granulocytes, neutrophils,
monocytes, eosinophils, all ofthe things.
And then it also has thatandrographis, andrographis
paniculata.
It is a plant that's been usedin Asian medicine for centuries.
Traditionally, the plant hasbeen used as an infusion or a
powder, either alone or incombination with other herbal
(26:17):
plants, and it's been reportedto provide strong antioxidant
support due to its ability toactivate highly protective
antioxidant reactions, includingsuperoxide dismutase, catalase
and glutathione.
So, yeah, sometimes I like touse the NK stem with the Viracid
.
Of course, I'm going to addMitocord to that.
(26:37):
If you have EBV.
I'm also going to throw in someCoQ10 and BioPC Pro, which
increases membrane fluidity andthat increases nutrient delivery
to cells and boosts ATP forthat crazy fatigue that you can
have.
So when you boost naturalkiller cell activity with
(26:59):
orthomolecular strategies, youessentially train your immune
system's elite squad to be moreefficient and lethal, so EBV
does not stand a chance.
Your natural killer cells nowcan spot the virus more easily,
attack infected cells andprevent your EBV from spreading.
By stimulating natural killercells, you're making sure that
your immune system isn't justwaiting for it to show up.
(27:21):
It's always on high alert.
It's ready to stop the virusbefore it can make an issue in
your body.
Because EBV is sneaky, since itcan go dormant in your body for
years and hide in your cells, and it waits for the perfect
moment to reactivate.
But using orthomolecular NKstem, you're giving your immune
system the boost it needs toclear it from your body for good
(27:42):
.
With a combination of targetednutrients and herbs, you make
sure your natural killer cellsare always in fighting shape and
ready to take on any viralthreat.
So you don't have to let EBVrun the show.
If you're dealing with chronicfatigue, autoimmune symptoms or
other bizarre health issues, ebvmight be part of the puzzle.
(28:04):
Testing can give you insight onhow it's affecting your system
and functional treatments canhelp tackle it with a holistic
approach.
If you're ready to stop EBVfrom being the invisible culprit
behind your health struggles orif you're listening to this,
wondering if you need to betested for EBV, let's chat and
we can dive into somepersonalized testing and
(28:24):
treatment options that focus onyou.
Not just the virus and EBV maynot always show itself in the
obvious ways, but when itreactivates, it can leave a mark
on your health in surprisingand frustrating ways.
With functional medicines focuson holistic healing, immune
system support and gut health, Ican help you keep this tricky
virus under control and optimizeyour overall well-being.
(28:47):
Don't let EBV crash your party.
Kick it to the curb with thepower of functional medicine.
And if you are curious, here'sa little fun fact my maiden name
was Bar, so technically EBV andI are family and I'm here to
help you kick this viral familymember to the curb too.
So you can make a virtualconsultation.
