Okay, friends, today I want totalk about something that on the
surface sounds like it belongsin a hospital supply closet or
maybe in an art class methyleneblue, that bright smurf approved

But stick with me, because thislittle blue potion has a pretty
fascinating past and such apromising future in functional
medicine.
I want to take you back about25 years ago.
I was in the hospital watchingsurgeons in the OR use methylene

And that was it.
No one back then was saying,wow, what a mitochondrial

They have faster absorption andsometimes used more for

No matter the route, you wantto make sure you're using
medical grade methylene blue,because it's the only way that

it's safe and effective.
Just this past week I wastreating a patient with newly
diagnosed cancer.
I was giving a high dosevitamin C infusion and the
patient asked me about methyleneblue.
And that's when it hit me Wow,the conversation sure has
shifted.
This little blue dye I once sawas just a surgical marker is

now being talked about as partof real metabolic cellular
therapy.
It's so humbling and excitingat the same time.
I have used this on a probablyless than a handful of patients,
even though the research outthere is amazing.
I'll tell her story.
You know, let's, I'm going tochange her name to Sarah.
But when Sarah first came to meshe looked exhausted, not the I

stayed up too late kind oftired, but the deep, frustrating
kind of fatigue that seeps intoyour brain.

She would walk into a room andforget where she was when she

I still follow her throughouther journey, but the difference

because while methylene bluesounds like superhero fuel for
your mitochondria, it's notwithout its own fine print.
There are risks and side effectsof methylene blue.
There always is a risk ofserotonin syndrome because

methylene blue is a monoamineoxidase or an MAO inhibitor.
At certain doses.
If you combine that with SSRIs,snris or other antidepressants,
there is a risk of serotoninsyndrome.
That would be like agitation,high blood pressure, tremors,
confusion, fever, seizures.
So it's absolutely criticalthat you have a good

consultation to screen you tomake sure you're a good
candidate or if you have G6PDdeficiency.
So if you have this deficiencyyou cannot process methylene
blue safely.
It can cause hemolytic anemia,which is where your red blood
cells break down, and this iswhy many functional medicine

practices and oncology centersorder a G6PD test before using
high dose vitamin C or themethylene blue, and there is a
risk of toxicity.
So at low doses it's amitochondrial booster, it's an
antioxidant.
At high doses it can flip thescript and become a pro-oxidant.
It can stress your cellsinstead of helping.

So that's something you want.
To make sure you're taking thisunder supervision of a
professional.
And then G6PD.
I wasn't joking about the smurf.
Your urine, your stool, yourtongue, even your skin, can take
on a temporary blue-green tint.
It's more funny than harmful,but it can really freak patients
out if they don't know thatahead of time.
And then there's always GIupset.

Some people that take the oralcapsules can have nausea,
abdominal pain or even diarrhea.
I would never give this toanybody pregnant or
breastfeeding.
There's just not a lot ofstudies out there that I can
find that showed safety.
If you have severe kidneydisease I would not give it,
because if you have excretionissues it can really raise that

toxicity risk or anybody thathas a known hypersensitivity,
which is very rare but can bepossible.
So methylene blue can bepowerful when used correctly,
but it does require medicalgrade sourcing no fish tank
cleaner, amazon hacks.
Dosing does matter.
It's the difference betweenantioxidant and pro-oxidant and
that is a fine line between thetwo.
