Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to Harmony
Hub Health, where my mission is
to provide comprehensive,affordable, integrative care
that addresses the root cause ofhealth issues.
At the Hub, the focus is onindividual patient journeys.
I strive to optimize health, vitality and longevity,
fostering a community where eachperson can thrive in body, mind
and spirit.
(00:21):
So today I want to talk aboutsupercharging men's health with
functional medicine.
Father's Day is a time toappreciate the men who are the
cornerstone of our lives.
(00:42):
But let's be real while dadsare often seen as the invincible
superheroes in our lives, eventhe strongest need a little help
staying at the top of theirgame.
Enter functional medicine, where science meets optimal
health to help men tackle theunique challenges they face
inside and out, from hormonebalance to gut health, to mental
clarity.
(01:02):
Here's how men can level uptheir health and continue
rocking that superhero vibe wellinto the future.
Testosterone is often referredto as the man hormone, and it's
no exaggeration.
Testosterone influenceseverything from muscle mass and
bone density to energy levelsand libido.
But as men age, theirtestosterone levels naturally
(01:23):
decline by about 1% a year, starting when they turn 30.
This gradual drop can leavethem feeling sluggish, less
focused and even moody.
So low testosterone or low T isassociated with several
physiological issues.
There's fatigue.
You know testosterone is reallyimportant for energy.
Low levels lead to tiredness.
(01:43):
That's not fixed by justsleeping.
Muscle loss Testosterone helpsmaintain lean muscle mass.
With lower levels, muscle massdecreases, even if you are
exercising regularly.
Then there's those mood swings.
Depression and irritability canoccur as a result of hormonal
imbalances.
In functional medicine we don'tjust slap a quick fix like
(02:06):
synthetic testosterone.
We aim to optimize testosteroneproduction through natural
means as well.
So there's the micronutrients.
This is the zinc, the magnesiumand vitamin D.
They all play an essential rolein testosterone production.
Exercise, you know.
Strength training, hiit orhigh-intensity interval training
, and even heavy lifting aregreat ways to naturally boost
(02:28):
your own testosterone levels.
And then sleep the funnest one.
You know poor sleep is directlylinked to low testosterone.
Improving sleep hygiene andaiming for seven to nine hours a
night can really help keep yourtestosterone level stable.
Sometimes, though, thesenatural methods aren't enough,
and in those cases bioidenticalhormone replacement, known as
(02:49):
BHRT, can really help restoretestosterone levels to their
optimal range.
But it is very important topair that treatment with a
comprehensive lifestyle planthat includes diet, exercise and
stress management.
Then we have gut health, whichis the silent powerhouse for
men's health.
You might be thinking guthealth isn't that a thing for
(03:11):
girls or women.
Well, not really.
I know that we always say thatmen have an iron stomach, but
men's gut health is just asimportant.
In fact, research shows thatgut microbiome imbalances can
lead to a range of issues thataffect a man's overall
well-being.
Poor gut health has been linkedto everything from mood swings
(03:31):
and brain fog to joint pain andchronic fatigue.
And the gut isn't just aboutdigestion, it's the second brain
and plays a huge role inoverall health.
That's mental health.
You know.
A compromised gut microbiomeleads to increased levels of
inflammation and that affectsmood.
It affects brain function.
A large percentage of theimmune system is located in the
(03:54):
gut.
So poor gut health can lead tochronic inflammation and
susceptibility to illness.
And the gut also influences theestrogen metabolism in men.
So if gut bacteria are out ofbalance it can lead to elevated
estrogen levels and that canreally affect your testosterone
balance.
So to optimize gut health, probiotics and prebiotics.
(04:17):
These support a healthy gutmicrobiome.
The 4R gut healing protocol ofremove, replace, re-inoculate
and repair.
That approach involveseliminating harmful bacteria,
replenishing digestive enzymes, replenishing gut flora and
repairing the gut lining.
And then there's alsoanti-inflammatory foods.
(04:39):
This is where turmeric comes in.
Ginger, omega-3, rich foodslike salmon they can all help
reduce inflammation in the gutand promote overall health.
Now I don't recommend justtaking turmeric.
I've talked to a lot of peoplerecently and they list off
turmeric and that's their onlylike weapon against inflammation
.
It doesn't work that way, allright, and we want to keep dad
(05:03):
sharp for the long haul.
Men are often expected to beproviders and protectors, and
that requires a sharp mind.
But as they age, cognitivefunction can take a hit.
A sharp mind, but as they age, cognitive function can take a
hit.
Symptoms like brain fog, memorylapse, mental fatigue are more
common than you might think, especially in men who are still
balancing work, family and life.
(05:24):
Stress as men age, they canexperience cognitive changes due
to decreased testosterone.
Testosterone does help withcognitive performance.
Lower levels can impair memoryand focus.
You know they can also havecognitive changes because of
oxidative stress.
So this refers to the damagethat free radicals cause to
(05:45):
cells, including brain cells.
Over time, oxidative stress cancontribute to neurodegenerative
diseases like Alzheimer's andchronic stress.
High levels of cortisol, whichis a hormone released during
stress, can interfere with brainfunction and memory retention.
So we want to protect the brain.
And in functional medicine weapproach brain health with a
(06:07):
focus on nootropic supplements.
So these are cognitiveenhancers like omega-3 fatty
acids.
Nootropic supplements so theseare cognitive enhancers like
omega-3 fatty acids,phosphosalicerine, ginkgo biloba
.
These are all great forimproving memory and mental
clarity.
Then we have adaptogens.
(06:30):
These are herbs likeashwagandha and rhodiola.
They help lower cortisol levelsand reduce the effect of
chronic stress on the brain.
And then we have peptidesBPC-157, cerebrolysin.
These are peptides that areused to promote brain
regeneration and improve focusand memory.
So with a combination ofnutrient-dense foods, mental
exercise and some targetedsupplements, dads can stay sharp
(06:52):
and mentally fit as they age.
Next is the unseen superpower, and this is heart health.
The heart is the central engineof the entire body and without
it nothing works.
But in today's world, men areoften at risk for heart disease
due to lifestyle factors likepoor diet, lack of exercise and
stress.
In fact, cardiovascular diseaseis the leading cause of death
(07:15):
among men in the United States.
So as men age, the risk ofheart disease increases,
particularly due to factors likehigh blood pressure.
So chronic high blood pressureleads to plaque buildup in the
arteries, making it hard for theheart to pump efficiently,
making it hard for the heart topump efficiently.
Cholesterol imbalances if youhave low levels of HDL, which I
(07:38):
call healthy HDL, healthycholesterol, it's the good
cholesterol.
And if you have high levels ofbad cholesterol or the LDL, that
contributes to heart diseaseand inflammation.
So chronic low-gradeinflammation is a major player
in the development of heartdisease.
Functional medicine focuses onanti-inflammatory diets.
So chronic low-gradeinflammation is a major player
in the development of heartdisease.
Functional medicine focuses onanti-inflammatory diets.
(07:59):
So eating more whole, unprocessed foods, rich in
antioxidants and healthy fatsThink avocados, olive oil,
omega-3 fatty acids they canreduce inflammation and support
heart health.
There's also great supplementslike CoQ10 and magnesium.
They support heart function byimproving energy production and
helping to regulate bloodpressure.
Then there's good old exercise.
(08:20):
Regular cardiovascular exercisehelps maintain a healthy heart
and keeps your blood pressure incheck.
The silent struggle ofsuperheroes that's where I go to
mental health.
While we often celebratephysical strength, men are just
as vulnerable to mental healthstruggles.
You know societal pressures toman up can result in feelings of
(08:42):
isolation, anxiety anddepression.
Yet men are less likely to seekhelp from mental health issues.
Research shows that elevatedcortisol levels from long-term
stress can lead to adrenalfatigue, where the body
struggles to regulate stresshormones, and that can lead to
feelings of exhaustion andburnout.
And men may experiencedepression differently than
(09:05):
women, often showing moreirritability or anger, or even
physical symptoms like aches andpains symptoms like aches and
pains.
For functional medicine, we dotalk about stress management.
Techniques like mindfulness, meditation, even yoga, can help
reduce stress and restorehormonal balance.
There's so many differentstress techniques you can do.
(09:26):
You know nutrients like thoseomega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D
and magnesium.
They all help improve mood andreduce anxiety.
Then the peptides oxytocin,melatonin.
They all support mental healthby reducing anxiety and
promoting restorative sleep.
So if we had to talk about thetop five men's health issues
(09:47):
that can be addressed withfunctional medicine, these are
them.
Number one we'll go throughthem.
These are them Number one.
We'll go through them.
Testosterone decline.
So as men age, testosteronelevels decrease, leading to
fatigue, muscle loss and lowerlibido.
Functional medicine helps byoptimizing testosterone through
natural methods like nutrientsupport, exercise and, when
(10:09):
needed, the BHRT.
Number two chronic stress andadrenal fatigue.
Men are often under immensepressure to provide and to
perform, so chronic stress canlead to high cortisol levels,
which negatively impact physicaland mental health.
So functional medicine supportsstress management through
supplements, lifestyleadjustments and adaptogenic
(10:30):
herbs like ashwagandha.
Number three heart disease.
Men face a high risk ofcardiovascular disease,
especially with high bloodpressure, cholesterol imbalances
and chronic inflammation.
Functional medicine addressesthis with anti-inflammatory diet
, targeted supplements likeCoQ10, and regular
cardiovascular exercise.
(10:52):
Number four gut health anddigestive issues.
A healthy gut is essential foroptimal function.
I don't know why men overlookdigestive health.
Issues like bloating, indigestion and poor nutrient
absorption can be addressed withprobiotics, the 4-R gut healing
protocol and anti-inflammatoryfoods.
And then number five, which isnot the least, is the cognitive
(11:15):
decline in mental health.
So brain fog, memory loss, moodswings they're all a result of
aging or stress.
So functional medicine usesnootropic supplements, cognitive
exercises, peptides to supportbrain health, while also
tackling mental health withnutritional support and stress
management techniques.
Supporting men throughfunctional medicine involves
(11:36):
taking a holistic approach thataddresses their physical, their
mental and their emotionalhealth, and certain ways that we
can do this is by comprehensivetesting.
Functional medicine is built onpersonalized health, so
starting with functional labtesting is key.
Men should undergo hormonalpanels to assess testosterone,
(11:57):
thyroid function, cortisol andother key hormones.
Nutrient testing to identifydeficiencies in vital nutrients.
These could be vitamin D, b12,magnesium.
We could also do gut healthtesting, like the GI map, to
evaluate the microbiome andensure healthy digestion and
nutrient absorption.
There's heart health screeningslike the C-reactive protein I
(12:20):
use the high sensitivity one.
I also use homocysteine, whichare markers for inflammation and
cardiovascular health.
Also tailored diet plans, so apersonalized nutrition plan is
very important.
Functional medicine focuses onnutrient-dense,
anti-inflammatory foods thatsupport men's needs Healthy fats
like those found in avocados, olive oil and fatty fish,
(12:43):
protein from high qualitysources like grass-fed beef,
wild-caught fish and plant-basedproteins.
And then complex carbohydrateslike sweet potatoes, quinoa,
leafy greens.
They support sustained energylevels and hormone balance.
We definitely want to encouragemen to take an active role in
their own health.
(13:03):
Improving sleep quality is oneof the most powerful tools for
optimizing testosterone andoverall wellness.
Seven to nine hours is great.
You want to encourageactivities like meditation or
just walking, yoga, even hobbiesthat allow for mental
relaxation and recovery.
(13:24):
And if we talk about naturalsupplements, there are several
natural supplements that cansupport men's health Zinc and
magnesium for testosteroneproduction.
Ashwagandha for reducing stressand promoting healthy cortisol
levels.
Omega-3 fatty acids for brainand heart health.
I think um the two mainsupplements that I make sure
(13:46):
everybody that walks through mydoor in my office are going to
be the ortho, omega, um and d3k2.
Everything after that is goingto be like the Mitochor a good
foundation vitamin with minerals.
And then you know the icing onthe cake, I like to add on the
ortho biotic.
(14:08):
That's the good probiotics withespalarty, but zinc and
magnesium are important, ashwagandhas can be important
and the omega-3s are very, veryimportant.
So you know this father's day, let's raise a toast to the men
who serve as our everydaysuperheroes, but let's also
remind them that even thestrongest heroes need to
(14:30):
maintain their health in orderto continue fighting the good
fight.
Through the power of functionalmedicine, whether it's
optimizing testosterone levels, supporting gut health or
boosting brain function, men canensure they stay strong, sharp
and healthy for years to come.
So if the man in your life isshowing signs of fatigue, moon
(14:52):
changes, declining health, don'tlet him be the last to realize
that his superpowers areslipping away.
