Dr. Steven Vogel is the Director of the Political Economy Program at UC Berkeley, where he is a Professor of Asian Studies, and a Professor of Political Science and Political Economy. He specializes in the political economy of the advanced industrialized nations, especially Japan.

Dr. Vogel was awarded a Commendation from the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs for his contribution to Japanese studies. He has published extensively about Japan, including the following two books that we discuss in this interview:
