The components Andrew mentions are (1) increasing circulation/metabolism, (2) progressing mechanics and movements, (3) warming up the nervous system, and (4) prepping your mental state as well. Collectively, all these areas will help you to better transition from a rested state into your sports or activities.
Andrew also discusses how the focus of warmups can be very different from person to person. Understand what you need to prepare your body and implement the appropriate intensity, components, and practices that will do so. These warmup practices will make a difference to maximize how you perform and make progress over time. Also, keep in mind that you want your warmups to be efficient too. This is meant to complement your sports and activities well, not to replace your sports and activities. As a rule of thumb, if you are doing more intense physical activities or more precision types of skills, you will probably spend a little more time warming up. If you are recovering from injuries or working on movement dysfunctions, that may also require more lengthy warmups.
