Dr. Shon (00:00):
Today was a crazy day.
What has happened on day 8 ofthe Consistency Project?
For day 8 of the ConsistencyProject, it was just one of
those days.
I'm tired.
I spent 2-3 hours buried indental claims, handling a tough
extraction, and I had a fullpatient schedule and I almost
(00:22):
got caught up in theprocrastination spirit.
But I told myself no, no, we'renot quitting today.
Today is not the day that weare going to quit.
So I set my alarm clock, took anap and showed up for me and
for my tribe.
I'm showing up for my futuretribe and they don't even know
it yet.
I'm here, boo, waiting on you.
(00:43):
That's what this project is allabout 365 days of consistency.
No matter how you feel now, ifyou're feeling burned out, that
means that maybe you pick thechallenge that doesn't align
with your spirit.
Whatever challenge you pick foryour 365 days should align with
your spirit.
If it's too difficult, then youmight as well let it go, but if
(01:04):
it's something you really want, then you can't make excuses.
That's the only rule.
No days off and no quitting.
That means you just can't quit.
We already know for a year lifehappens, shit happens, it just
does.
But you got to show up tired.
You got to just up.
That has been my thing for thepast week is showing the fuck up
(01:28):
.
Say it with me, guys.
Show the f*ck up.
Tonight, we will be talkingabout conquering procrastination
, pursuing mastery, embracing AIand navigating global
challenges.
These are some weird timeswe're living in.
For all of us, we don't reallyknow what's going to be
(01:50):
happening in the next couple ofmonths or a couple of years, but
I do know one thing we will begrowing in the next year.
We will not be a victim of fearand propaganda that they put on
the news every single day.
Yes, you want to be in the know, but don't let this stuff take
you down and allow you to feeldefeated.
There are so many things thatwe can do as Niiji, as my, tribe
(02:12):
to overcome every obstacle.
What I learned in eight days ofshowing up is momentum is
building even when the energy islow.
For instance, today my energywas drained.
The one thing that I hate isdoing dental claims, which is
primarily the reason why ourdental office, our dental
(02:33):
practice, motivational Dentistry, is going out of network,
because dealing with insuranceclaims and battling with the
fees and chasing things whenyou're already done with the
work is such a nightmare.
When I first started thisoffice, I consulted with a fee
negotiator person who wassupposed to give me the highest
fees, but it ended up being justcrappy fees and sometimes I'm
(02:58):
just working for free.
So now we are headed out ofnetwork.
So we don't have to have thesedays where I'm just sitting for
three or four hours trying toclose claims.
I hate it.
Yes, I could have somebody todo it.
Yes, I should delegate it.
But who wants to delegatesomething like that?
I'd just rather get rid of it.
And we don't have enough staffto do all of that right now.
We just don't.
(03:18):
And then these insurance claimsare confusing, and then that
means I would have to train them.
I just want to get out ofnetwork.
Every time I do claims it'sjust oh.
It reminds me of working forthe state of florida division of
disability determinations andsitting at that damn desk all
day.
I felt like I was walking intoprison, which is the primary
(03:38):
reason why I decided to studyfor the DAT and come to dental
school, why I decided to apply,because I didn't know I was
going to get in.
Talking about come.
Yeah, momentum is building.
This is day eight.
It's very early in the process, especially when you want to be
consistent, but every day counts.
If you don't show up for anyone of the days in the 365 days,
(04:01):
then this experiment is gone tothe trash can and we can't have
it.
I really want to provesomething to myself, prove
something to my tribe, that wecan do this.
We are in this together, guys.
We are in this together and Ican't wait to see your wonderful
faces as we continue to growour beautiful, positive,
(04:24):
energetic, authentic, nojudgment zone, truly ourself,
community period.
So consistency is like a muscle.
Every day that we show up, weare strengthening that muscle to
show up even more and it makesit a lot easier.
I can recall those days indental school.
You guys, dental school is justone of the most draining,
(04:48):
exciting, dream-filled periodsof your life, because you know
that you've been chosen to bethere.
But you also know that youcannot play around while you
there at least not at MeharryMedical College because they
don't play the radio.
They don't play the radio.
From the time you step foot onthe canvas to the time you leave
, there's no radio playing.
There is no radio around.
(05:09):
Like, where is the radio?
Can we play the radio?
No, we got another test for you, I'm just kidding.
Some of the best days of mylife, but also some of the most
challenging, dedicated,discipline, lack of
procrastination days of my life, and I have to thank my
classmates for that.
They know who they are.
I have to thank my studybuddies for that.
(05:30):
They know who they are.
Because without my studybuddies, my classmates, I don't
know where I will be.
I don't know.
I just really don't know.
I really don't know where Iwill be.
This challenge has made merealize you don't need perfect
conditions to be consistent.
You need discipline, a decisionand a deeper why.
(05:53):
You don't need perfectconditions to be consistent.
You need discipline, decisionand a deep reason for why.
The three d's you need thethree d's of habit formation.
That's discipline, a decisionand determination.
That's your why, like why, areyou on this course to
(06:19):
consistency?
Why is this a skill that wewant to put under our belt?
Why are we showing up?
What is the end goal?
What is the end game, guys?
What is the end game in all ofthis?
What is it?
What is it?
Answer that question.
What is the end game for you?
If you could master consistencytoday.
(06:39):
How would that impact your life?
How could that make your lifemuch better?
How can that make your lifemuch better?
How can you that make your lifemuch better?
We are now on book review ofeat that frog.
So in chapter eight, set yourthree most important goals and
write them down daily.
(06:59):
If you don't write your goals, then they're like wishes or
dreams, and only three percentof us have clear written goals.
I want my tribe to be the tribethat is writing our goals down
on paper.
Get you some paper right now, tribe, go, find you a piece of
paper and a pen and just writeone goal that you want to do for
the next year.
(07:19):
If you have never written agoal in your life, today is the
day.
I want somebody to go and writetheir goal down.
Only you can do this.
Write your three most importantgoals down and take 30 seconds.
Don't spend the whole day.
Don't take a lot of time.
In 30 seconds, what are yourthree most important goals when
(07:41):
it comes to business, career, family relationships, financial
health, personal professionaldevelopment, socially with your
community, and list threebiggest problems or concerns in
your life right now.
What are they?
With business and career, mygoal is to become a fellow with
(08:06):
the Academy of General Dentistry, become very proficient in
implantology and just to reallyhone in on practice management
and grow the practice to amulti-level practice level and
just learn more about businessWith dentistry.
It's heavily invested intobusiness, more than anything
(08:28):
I've ever seen.
It's a huge learning curve forme.
Three of my business goalsthree family and relationship
goals is just to really juststart a family, continue to grow
my relationship built on loveand trust and honesty and fun
and friendship, and with myfamily I want to really move
(08:52):
closer to my family, but that'simpossible right now.
But that is that would be agoal, but that's not realistic
because of this dental practicethis dental practice financially
I would like to diversify myincome.
I would like to continue todevelop royalties.
(09:12):
So these are things that youcan make money in your sleep,
such as books, music, podcasting, youtube.
These are things that you do upfront and they pay you later.
And royalties a lot of peopleallow companies to steal their
royalties and then they makemoney off of their songs and
music and books for forever, andyou see a lot of this in the
(09:33):
news when people sell theircreativity and then it leaves
them in financial shambles.
Health three health goals for mewould be to work out more
consistently, eat better and tomeditate more.
Personal and professionaldevelopment that would be to
take one ce course minimum a day, or at least a couple times per
(09:56):
week.
Personal just to focus onself-care keep your hand, keep
my nails done, get a pedicure, get a massage, just relax so
that I don't get burned out.
I'm talking about you, don'tget burned out, but I'm talking
about me.
And then socially and communitybuilding my twi my twi my twi
(10:19):
what's up.
My twi Building my tribe onTwitch and other social
platforms so that I cancommunicate better, being more
engaged in the community andalso just starting back
something that we call the DreamEmergency Walk, which is you
have your dreams, they are anemergency and we started a walk
for youth.
(10:40):
I had to stop doing the Dreamergency Walk because nobody
would donate because I'm adoctor and people feel like I'm
a millionaire just because I'm adoctor, when I'm actually the
one of them.
I'm from the hood, so I'mreally not a rich doctor at all.
I'm just trying to make it out, even still now.
So I had to pause that until Igrow my community and they
understand that I am not amillionaire.
(11:01):
I am just trying to make it outstill to this day, and if you
keep trying, you shall succeed, and one day I'm going to succeed
.
I will now.
I just gave you an example ofhow you can write your goals, or
how to think about those threemost important goals, and I
didn't spend like a whole daythinking about it, because this
(11:24):
is something that should be offthe top of the dome.
Subconsciously, you know whatthose three most important goals
are.
All right, our ultimate goal isto live a happy, healthy, long
life, and Brian mentions thisrule in the book.
(11:45):
It is the quality of time atwork that counts and the quality
of time at home that matters.
Do y'all understand that?
So when you at work, yourquality, your skills, the more
you improve them, the more youdon't procrastinate.
You stay on top of yourbusiness.
You're growing in your field.
That's quality.
You want to do more quality sothat you can produce more in
less time.
(12:05):
But it is the quantity of timethat you spend at home that
matters.
The more time you're home withyour family.
This is really what's going tomatter.
Take time to smell the flowersand balance your life.
It is not an option.
It's not an option, guys.
(12:26):
Balance your life.
We ain't got time to be playingaround either.
We ain't got time to playaround, but don't you need a
break?
Take a break, learn your body.
I had to pay.
I had a patient recently fromthe islands and they told me we
were just talking about thedifferences between the islands
and here and they were justtelling me how they don't like
(12:47):
the US because we work too hard.
In America we work too hard, and it's true Even from me being
a child.
I always saw my grandmothersworking day and night.
They didn't really have timefor us on their free time.
It was either work and churchand school.
It was always work, though Workwas always taking them away
(13:12):
from me, taking my grandmaEartha away from me, because
they had no choice.
They were certified nurse.
Assistants Didn't make much, soyou have to work long hours all
the time just to provide foryour family.
So the patient was like y'allAmericans don't know how to shut
down, you don't have any familytime.
And they were right.
It's like we grind so hard thatwe actually forget how to live,
(13:36):
and this is something that wedon't want to do.
That's why hood to hood isimportant.
I want us to elevate our mindsso that we out here just taking
this fake money and turning itinto land, real estate royalties
.
Say it with me, guys land, realestate royalties, investment
(13:57):
these are the things you want toturn the fake money into, but
the money is not backed by gold, which is why there's a lot
going on right now.
What are your three goals forright now?
Write those down, and that'sbasically chapter eight.
We're moving right along tochapter nine.
Prepare thoroughly before youbegin.
(14:17):
Clean your space, set up yourtools, get your writing
materials, your logininformation, your access codes,
email everything you need tostart working and keep working
until it's done.
When I'm doing a procedure, such as an extraction or filling
or any procedure, I alreadyknow what material I need.
(14:40):
We have a clinic manual whereit's a list of things that I
already know that we need, andthis should be already on my
tray when I go in for theprocedure.
This is called being preparedthoroughly before you begin.
It's nothing worse than havingan assistant who doesn't prepare
everything before we begin.
(15:00):
So I'm halfway through aprocedure and we're stopping to
go get something.
That is not cool.
We want to be prepared ahead oftime, so it always helps to
double check.
I'm halfway through a procedureand we're stopping to go get
something.
That is not cool.
We want to be prepared ahead oftime, so it always helps to
double check everything.
So now I tend to just checkeverything before we start until
I can trust the assistant tohave everything laid out.
But you really need to doublecheck everything so this can go
(15:23):
for any aspect of your life.
To double check everything, sothis can go for any aspect of
your life.
When I was preparing for thenational board's dental exam in
dental school and we had tostudy like maybe three, four
months before the test, we needall of our books, all your pens,
all your markers, anything fornotes.
You need to pack you a lunch.
You need to have something todrink, some spare money in case
(15:45):
you want to take a walk and takea break.
It's like you need to beprepared to study.
It can go to any area of yourlife.
Just prepare thoroughly beforeyou begin.
You want to make sure your workarea is comfortable, attractive
and conducive to long workperiods, periods, clean and neat
.
This is why my friends and mystudy group we would study at
(16:10):
vanderbilt library.
We were preparing for thenational boards or a big exam.
We would study at the librarybecause the library is clean,
it's quiet, it's attractive andit's conducive for long study
hours.
Sometimes you're home, you justget to focus on the bed.
It's like I want to go to sleep.
It helps to get into thelibrary or with other study
(16:33):
buddies so that you can stayfocused and you have everything
you need.
That way, if you get tired, youhave these other focus-driven
people around you who are notplaying games, so it keeps you
motivated to stay up and keepgoing.
If you're in the library andyou see all the students
studying, it makes you realize, hey, I'm not doing this alone, I
have other people out heretrying to get it, everybody's
(16:54):
out here trying to get it.
But if you're at home or in aloud environment, you don't have
all your books, you're justwasting time.
Make sure this is important toprepare thoroughly before you
begin.
This is going to fuel you.
This is fuel to help youadvance.
Think about how many bookspeople have not written.
(17:17):
You got a book in you that youhave not written.
Think about it.
How many books have people notwritten?
How many degrees have peoplenot completed?
What about life tasks notcompleted?
All because the lack ofpreparation?
Think about all of the thingsthat have been left incomplete
(17:41):
due to the lack of preparation.
How many things have you notdone because you weren't
prepared?
If you show up and you're notready, it's just uh, I don't
even feel like doing it.
No more.
Launch towards your dreams.
You miss 100 other shots thatyou don't take.
Guys, develop courage by actingas if you already have courage
(18:02):
and behave accordingly.
This means have courage andtake that first step.
Me showing up on Twitch guesswhat?
This is me having courage, showing up, taking that first
step, taking that leap of faith, being unapologetic and not
surrendering to my fear, notsurrendering to the negative
(18:23):
things that can happen.
When I go live, I'm stilltrying to grow my audience.
You can't surrender to thosefeelings.
Show up for your purpose andthe right tribe will find you,
and that's what any goal thatyou have.
Show up for yourself, show upfor your purpose and your tribe
will find you.
So, as long as I come on hereand do me and I like learning
(18:47):
I'm a learner, a reader, aleader, a dentist, a rapper.
I'm going to be whatever, whatever I can do that aligns
with my spirit and makes mehappy, and I encourage you to do
the same.
But whatever, you don't nottake the shot, 100% of the shots
you don't not take, the shot100 of the shots you don't take
(19:07):
is just a waste and you're gonnamiss 100 of the shots you take.
Okay, you don't take.
You miss 100 of the shots youdon't take.
You can't climb the mountain ifyour boots aren't laced.
How many of us got books, things that just are waiting?
It's time to activate, guys.
Activate your mind today, activate on your dreams today.
(19:31):
Turn up, turn up, turn up today.
Let me see you turn up for yourdreams.
Let me see you turn up for yourgoals.
Let me see you turn up for yourfuture.
Let me see you turn up becauseyou bow, hey, yay.
So turn up like what?
This is what we're talkingabout taking that first step.
(19:53):
I want you guys to take thatfirst step.
Or, if you're on a journey, continue to put one foot in
front of the other anytime youfeel defeated.
You don't feel like showing up,still show up and don't give up
.
Don't quit.
You will be met with so manyobstacles.
That's what hood to hood is allabout being met with hundreds
(20:14):
and hundreds of obstacles andstill overcoming them and still
standing on business, stillsaying you know what?
This door didn't work, thatdoor didn't work, I can't have a
seat at that table.
I don't know what this roadleave.
You know what?
I'll make my own road, I'mgonna make my own path, I will
(20:34):
build my own table, I will setmy own seats, I will build my
own door.
It might take you a little bitlonger, but the first step is to
start and to keep going longer, but the first step is to start
and to keep going one foot infront of the other.
Now, moving on to chapter 10.
It says take one oil barrel ata time.
(20:55):
You don't need the whole, youdon't need to see the whole
highway, just the next step.
He talks about this journeythat he had while he was
crossing the desert and a lot ofpeople didn't make it cross
this desert because they died.
And a lot of people didn't makeit across this desert because
they died, they got lost withthe sandstorms.
He says that they took it oneoil barrel at a time.
This is an old saying and Ireally like that he put this in
(21:16):
here it says by the yard it'shard, by the inch it's a cinch.
That just means, one step at atime, accomplish your biggest
goals.
Chapter 11, upgrade your keyskills.
A major reason forprocrastination and feeling
inadequate is the lack ofconfidence and the inability in
key areas of a task when yourskills and knowledge become
(21:39):
obsolete.
That your skills and knowledgebecome obsolete at a rapid pace.
You want want to update, upgrade your key skills at all
times.
Procrastination often stemsfrom feeling inadequate.
Your knowledge can expire veryfast.
Now the basketball coach PatRowley said anytime you stop
(22:02):
striving to get better, you aredying, bound to get worse.
So are you striving to getbetter?
Guess what?
If you're not striving to getbetter today, then you're bound
to get worse.
And a lot of people who are notstriving to get better probably
won't even make it to this partof the video because this is
too heavy.
Like this is just too much.
But for the right people withthe right ears that want to
(22:25):
never stop learning, you'rebound to get better.
Continuous learning is theminimum requirement in any field
.
Regardless of what field you'rein, regardless of what degree
you have, regardless of whatyour career title is, regardless
of who you are never stoplearning.
You only start to developmental health condition
(22:47):
conditions, alzheimer's,dementia.
You start to settle not beingable to read or write or speak
up for yourself or haveconfidence when you stop
learning.
If you want to continue to growin any field and surpass your
competitors or just surpass thecompetition, let me say that
(23:09):
again Maybe I shouldn't havetook that shot Never stop
learning.
This is continuous learning andany skill is a minimum
requirement.
When you increase your skills, you increase your confidence,
you increase your production, you increase your mood and guess
what?
We're going to decreaseprocrastination.
(23:30):
Every time you learn a newskill, you are fighting
procrastination.
How cool is that?
Just because you're here onthis live or watching this on
YouTube or listening to this onthe Hood to Hooded podcast, you
are fighting procrastination andincreasing your chances at
being more successful than youalready are and being more great
(23:52):
and amazing from inside out.
Head high, shoulders back, standing tall, standing on
business and fighting for yourdreams.
Every time you learn and showup for something that is
challenging you and remindingyou to fight for your life,
fight for yourself.
Don't let these people in thisnews and the naysayers and the
(24:15):
people who not trying to growdeter you from living your best
life period.
The three steps to mastery doy'all want to be masters at your
career or along your dream, asyou're fighting to be something
better, do you want to be amaster at it?
(24:36):
These are the three steps ofmastery.
Get a pen, get a piece of paperand write it down so you always
know, dang, if I want to mastermy life and my career, these are
the things that I must do, andthis applies to any career, any
field, any person students,career-driven people,
(24:57):
entrepreneurs, business owners.
This applies to all of usdentists, doctors, professors,
engineers, anybody a chef,bakers, anybody.
So it says three steps tomastery.
This is number one.
The first step Read in yourfield for at least one hour each
(25:21):
day.
This will increase youreffectiveness and productivity.
We always practice, and everyday we just practicing that life
, guys.
That's how I feel.
Every day I am here justpracticing on this ghetto ass
earth, just practicing, guys.
But we practice to get better.
Number two take every course, seminar, attend conferences,
business meetings, go tosessions, workshops and sit in
(25:44):
the front.
Take notes.
Are you taking notes right now?
Purchase the audio and of themost knowledgeable, competent
people in your field.
If I know someone is good atveneers, I'm gonna be in that
class.
If I know that this conferenceis gonna help me get better at
oral surgery, I need to be thereand sit in the front.
That's how you get the mostengagement.
(26:06):
Take notes I recently attendedan implant ce here in my local
area and I was the only one whohad my notepad out.
I know I look crazy and nobodyelse everybody else maybe they
were there for the free food oreven though it was a very boring
seminar, I would probably sayit was like a one out of ten on
excitement and engagement andfun and entertaining.
(26:28):
It was boring as all hell but Istill took notes because I felt
like that's just something Ihave to do.
It's a skill that I love.
That's how I can remember thisand learn something from it.
Number three listen to audio inyour car.
The average car owner sitsbehind the wheel 500 to 1000
hours per year.
(26:49):
Driving time equals learningtime.
You want to use everyopportunity that you can to
build your mental muscle withmental exercise instead of
driving and commuting an hour toa day and listening to some.
We all love to turn up.
We all want to 95 degrees.
(27:09):
We all want to.
We all want to do that boots onthe ground.
But what about turning on apodcast such as the hood to hood
podcast or a podcast in yourfield while you're driving, just
to build your mental muscle andkeep you motivated, inspired
for greatness?
I feel like that was a lot ofgems for us to grow and continue
(27:30):
to.
We knocking on beatingprocrastination up.
We fighting right now we're ina battle, we're in a war.
We're in a war withprocrastination.
The energy drink sometimes canbe a lifesaver to keep you up at
night when you have to stay upto the morning time until the
test come.
I remember those days when youhave to stay up to the morning
(27:52):
time until the test come.
I remember those days studyingall night until the test came
and sleeping at the school.
All the classmates just here atthe school in pajamas with
books, looking crazy.
The test is at 8 am and wesleep.
We got an hour before the test.
That's how dental school is.
It's like going home.
What is that?
Do I have a home?
Dental school is my home.
This campus is life, sosometimes those energy drinks
(28:17):
will keep you woke when you'restudying for the dat or any
other admissions test, but theyare bad for your teeth.
They are bad and bougie, energydrinks real bad and bougie,
they're going to have you alljacked up.
Why?
The three oral health carerisks from energy drinks is
(28:40):
number one high acidity, and theacid erodes enamel faster than
soda.
But both of them, in my opinion, are terrible, but they are
more acidic than just soda.
Now that's really bad.
Number two they have excesssugar.
This bacteria in your mouth isgoing to feed off this excess
sugar, produce more acid andlead to decay.
(29:02):
Number three dry mouth.
These energy drinks containcaffeine.
Caffeine dehydrates your, reducing the saliva that
protects your teeth.
You got three things going onwith the energy drinks.
And then if you put notbrushing and flossing
consistently on top of that, then you are headed for energy
(29:23):
drink decay.
And I know you are tired, butthere's a better way.
And I know you are tired, butthere's a better way Water, rest
, eating better, eating fruitsand veggies that have natural
energy sources will definitelyimprove your health over time
and it will save your teeth, save you a lot of money and
(29:44):
price.
And fillings, root canals downthe line.
Say no to energy drinks, guys.
And fillings, root canals downthe line.
Say no to energy drinks, guys.
If you're an energy drinkdrinker, if you're an energy
drink drinker, if you are anenergy drink consumer, then
that's not the move.
That's not the move.
It's totally not the move.
(30:06):
We're going to leave the energydrinks where they are and just
say no to energy drinks.
