Brazilian nanny Juliana Peres Magalhães and her lover, Brendan Banfield, the husband of the victim Christine Banfield, have been charged in a double murder case described by police as 'an appalling scene.' The incident occurred on February 24, 2023, at the Banfield family's home in Herndon, Virginia. Christine Banfield, 37, was found naked except for her socks, bleeding from fatal stab wounds to the neck, and later died at a hospital. Nearby, Joe Ryan, 39, who had arrived for a prearranged sex date with Christine, was found dead with gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
According to police and court documents, Peres Magalhães confessed to killing Ryan after a chaotic assault on Christine. Peres Magalhães claimed she saw Ryan entering the house and called Brendan, who returned home. Upon entering the bedroom, they found Ryan standing over Christine with a knife. However, police investigations suggest that Brendan and Peres Magalhães had premeditated the attack. Brendan allegedly shot Ryan and then stabbed Christine. Peres Magalhães then shot Ryan again after seeing him move on the floor.
The couple's relationship, which included an affair between Brendan and the nanny, was under strain in the months following Peres Magalhães's arrest. Recorded jail calls and conversations revealed tensions and fears of betrayal between the two suspects.
The case is marked by its gruesome nature and the complexities of the relationship between the perpetrators and the victims.
